Showers will continue to affect coastal areas this afternoon, especially the eastern and northern coasts of the country, with a wintry mix of rain, sleep and snow, and chance of snow settling in northern Scotland. Yellow warnings for snow and ice over Scotland and eastern coastal areas have been issued. There will be occasional sunny spells, but it will feel much colder than earlier in the month, particularly in the north. - This is the Met Office UK weather forecast for the afternoon of 19/11/2025. Bringing you today’s forecast is Alex Burkill.

00:00More wintry weather to come as we go through the rest of today and into Thursday.
00:04It's very cold out there and there's some more sleet and snow around as well,
00:09all due to this cold Arctic air that's plunging its way across the country.
00:14And it's this that's driving the wintry weather.
00:17There was a system that pushed its way southwards across parts of England earlier on today.
00:21That brought some rain, sleet and snow to some central southern parts,
00:25but that's now clearing away towards the southeast.
00:27And really, we're just talking about areas exposed to that brisk northerly wind,
00:31seeing a fair few showers.
00:33Those showers are likely to be a wintry mix.
00:36The further north you are, the greater chance you are of seeing some snow.
00:39Across the northern half of Scotland, the showers will be quite readily falling to snow,
00:44even to lower levels.
00:45Meanwhile, down the western side of the UK, there'll be a fair few showers pushing into parts of Northern Ireland,
00:50Western Wales and also perhaps Cornwall.
00:52And these could be a wintry mix.
00:54So some sleet, some snow, mainly the wintryness confined to higher ground here.
00:59Down the eastern side of England as well, also exposed to that wind.
01:02So likely to see a fair few showers and particularly over parts of northeast England,
01:06likely to see some snow building up through today and into tomorrow.
01:10Away from these zones that I just mentioned, actually a lot of dry weather to be had.
01:14Some decent sunshine across western parts as well.
01:17But a cold feel for all of us.
01:19Temperatures several degrees below average for the time of year in most places.
01:23And there's a biting northerly wind that we need to factor in.
01:26That's going to make it feel even colder as well.
01:29Little changes, actually, as we go through the end of the day.
01:32So those same places likely to continue to be affected by those wintry showers,
01:37which will continue to be a mix of rain, sleet or snow.
01:39Obviously, the further north you are, the higher up you are.
01:41The greater the chance of seeing some snow.
01:44But many central parts staying largely dry.
01:47Lots of clear skies.
01:48And so whilst there will still be a brisk wind around,
01:51with those clear skies we are going to see temperatures plummeting.
01:54Most places, even towns and cities, getting close to, if not below, freezing.
01:58A few degrees below in quite a few places.
02:00So a widespread frost could be quite harsh across parts of Scotland,
02:04particularly in the Shelter Glens.
02:05We look at temperatures getting close to negative double figures.
02:07So a very cold start to the day on Thursday for sure.
02:10It is going to be frosty, also icy.
02:13It's not just the snow that we need to watch out for.
02:15There will be some icy patches as well.
02:18Through Thursday, and it's looking relatively similar to Wednesday, really.
02:22Again, we're seeing showers piling in on that brisk northerly flow.
02:25Now, the wind will have changed direction ever so slightly.
02:28And that does mean that we're perhaps going to see a few more showers penetrating
02:32a bit further inland across parts of northeast England.
02:35And with that, then snow totals, particularly over the North York Moors,
02:38building up, we could see a substantial amount here.
02:42Meanwhile, elsewhere, still some showers down the western parts,
02:44but perhaps slightly fewer than on Wednesday.
02:47And still showers continue across northern parts of Scotland, many other areas,
02:51though, again, a largely dry day with the best of the sunshine once more towards the west.
02:56We do currently have lots of snow and ice warnings out at the moment.
02:59Here's just, well, the majority of them.
03:01They are constantly being updated and tweaked.
03:04I wanted to focus on the amber warning.
03:06Like I said, over the North York Moors, through Thursday in particular,
03:09we're going to continue to see that snow building up 15 to 25 centimetres possible,
03:14above 100 metres or so.
03:16That's enough to cause some significant disruption,
03:18which is why that amber warning is out.
03:21Difficult driving conditions allow extra time for your journey if you do have to travel
03:24and make sure you've got, you know, any necessary equipment with you, blankets,
03:29that kind of thing.
03:30And there is the potential for power cuts as well.
03:33It's another cold day.
03:34The winds will be ever so slightly lighter than on Wednesday,
03:38so maybe feeling slightly less raw.
03:40But nonetheless, temperatures below average for the time of year.
03:42In the sunshine, that will help counter things a little bit.
03:46But for many, yeah, a chilly feel for sure.
03:49As we go Thursday night into Friday, it's looking even colder, perhaps.
03:53So a harsh frost for many of us on Friday morning.
03:56But later on, we are set to see some rain arriving from the west,
03:59and that takes us into what's going to be fairly wet at times weekend,
04:04but with that, something a bit milder as well.
04:06For more information about what's to come thereafter
04:08and just how long this cold spell is going to last,
04:11well, make sure you check out the 10-day trend,
04:13which Annie will be bringing to you later on.
04:15Bye-bye.
04:15Bye-bye.
