00:00This is the story of one of the best-known of all the saints, Patrick.
00:25His story is a mixture of fact and legend, as it is with so many other saints.
00:33The man who brought the Christian faith to the land of Hibernia, now known as Ireland,
00:38came from across the Channel in Roman Britain.
00:42He was a Roman citizen during the period when the empire was close to its ragged end.
00:55His name was Patrick.
01:11He was born into the Christian faith.
01:14He was a young man who did not know the true God.
01:19But he had no idea about salvation.

06:03For you are young, you are strong.
06:06For the next weeks, you will sleep in the hut beyond.
06:11You will do as I tell you to do.
06:14And if I say sit, sit.
06:24Do I have protection as a citizen of Rome?
06:39And what kind of protection do you wish for, oh citizen of Rome?
06:46Is it for yourself or for your fellow Roman citizens?
06:52Or are you thinking that your head might stand on the highest pike?
07:03Well, that will be my decision when the time comes.
07:07Or are you thinking that Roman soldiers might come and rescue you?
07:12Well, the answer is no.
07:16You will speak what I tell you to speak.
07:19You will shepherd one of my flocks.
07:24You will shear the sheep in spring.
07:28These will be your principal tasks as a shepherd.
07:31You will be allowed to kill one sheep each season to feed yourself.
07:37Just one.
07:39If I find that you have stolen from me, you will be sacrificed to Aron, the god of the underworld.
07:51Do you understand me?
07:54Now, sit.

08:32It is the end panel.
08:33There's no trouble.
08:35He happens to me.
08:38You. Come on.
09:08What are you doing?
09:15Taking your sheep for the first season.
09:19But why?
09:25Because I can.
09:28But what am I going to eat?
09:34Eat the dried meat.
09:36There. That's where you take the sheep.
10:06That's where you take the sheep.
10:08There. That's where you take the sheep.
10:10There. That's where you take the sheep.
10:12There. That's where you take the sheep.
10:14There. That's where you take the sheep.
10:16That's where you take the sheep.
10:19There.
10:20That's how you take the sheep.
10:21There.
10:23There.
10:24I don't know.
10:54Patrick came to believe that the ordeal of being abducted into slavery
11:05was a punishment for turning away from God.
11:24That ordeal of being abducted into slavery.
12:16They were the forest dwellers.
12:30These were pagans who survived on what they could forage.
12:46They were the forest dwellers.
13:16They were the forest dwellers.
13:46They were the forest dwellers.
14:16They were the forest dwellers.
14:46They were the forest dwellers.
14:53Months after he arrived in Hibernia, the love of God increased within him, his sense of awe
15:01before God.
15:02His spirit was moved and he started to pray day and night.
15:08Day and night.
15:15Day and night.
17:04I offer you this sheep.
17:18We have thanks to you.
17:32May joy rise up to greet you at every dawn.
17:48I offer you this sheep.
18:18I'll put them into the cart.
18:26Car!
18:27What's your Christ to me?
18:48I'll put them in the cart.
18:56I'll put them in the cart.
18:58I'll put them in the cart.
23:30My heart is bursting, my Lord.
23:32Bursting.
23:36My heart is bursting, my Lord.
23:50Bursting.
23:52Now it is time for you to return home.
24:12Now it is time for you to return home.
24:14Now it is time for you to return home.
24:18A ship is made ready for you.
24:20Go to the shore.
24:24May the tides bear you safely on your journey.
24:26May the tides bear you safely on your journey.
24:36May the tides bear you safely on your journey.
24:38May you think of us often as we will think of you.
24:42As often as we will think of you.
24:44He found his salvation in the land of his captivity, in Hibernia.
24:48He found his salvation in the land of his captivity, in Hibernia.
25:00The revelation came true.
25:04There was a ship, and after six years in bondage, Patrick returned to his homeland.
25:16I became a shepherd.
25:38To the pagans, who took you?
25:44No, not the ones that took me.
25:46The ones that foraged for their meals, who have been driven into the forest.
25:50And I tried to help them to open their hearts to the Lord our God.
25:56My dear son, you have been through a terrible trial.
25:59But that was where my heart opened to God, Mother.
26:03The trial was the first step in the road.
26:05Now you are home.
26:07And you can return to yourself.
26:10Mother, there are souls to save everywhere.
26:13Your duty is to your mother.
26:15My greatest duty is to God.
26:17So it is for all of us who have received this word.
26:20Please forgive me.
26:32Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
26:38Father, I will no longer look past any man or woman who crosses my path.
26:48Father, I have come to serve God.
26:50Father, I have come to serve God.
27:06Father, I see that we have no choice other than to give all of ourselves to God, which means to give all of ourselves to those most in need.
27:22I saw it every minute of the day during my years as a slave.
27:26I was in Hibernia.
27:28I was herding sheep for the pagans who took me away from my home.
27:32And the people came to me from out of the darkness, and they cried out for God's love, even though they didn't know how to say it.
27:40And I gave them whatever I could of my food, of my clothing, of the animals I guarded.
27:46I gave them my love.
27:49God's love.
27:52There is nothing else.
27:57Will you admit me?
28:01Yes.
28:05And how will I begin?
28:07Will I bring food to the people, or will I take care of the sick?
28:12You will begin serving God right now.
28:17By sweeping the floor.
28:18By sweeping the floor.
28:19By sweeping the floor.
28:20By spraying the vows long for Gideon.
28:25Couldn't make you have made you aware of.
28:29Hmmm....
28:30It doesn't matter whatever it is, much, is it brutal.
28:32JAMIE packed...
28:40Coming in...
28:42Dave! Dave!
28:44I want you to be out of the world!
28:51Examine your heart.
28:55What is unspoken within you?
28:59I have no answer.
29:02But you do.
29:04You're the only one with the answer.
29:07Let it speak within you.
29:10How long will it take?
29:12I have no answer.
29:14I will be from the outside of this house.
29:19People need to be weird.
29:21We need to be working out there with the people.
29:26You're a heartless, godless hypocrite.
29:29It's always the sin of pride with you.
29:31You speak of love, but never from love.
29:33We're a community of God.
29:35Of common faith.
29:36And you always complain about every task that's required of you
29:39for the community.
29:41my brothers i am the worst sinner of all pride again but i mean it because i am a prideful man
29:51and i apologize to you my brother for my harsh words but my pride comes from a swelling heart
29:58and every moment that i'm not doing the work of god for others the ones who always come knocking
30:03on our doors i feel the time is wasted patrick i count one sheep missing from our flock
30:13you will pray in your dormitory throughout your waking hours for 28 days
30:19and i am now telling you that i will be made bishop
30:30i have decided to appoint our brother patrick as abbot
30:36your grace how can how can this be after we've heard this man for hours of argument confessed
30:45before us to the sin of pride and after you just accused him of giving away one of our sheep and
30:50now he's to become a new abbot how can this be that will be for one reason and one reason alone
30:57patrick is argumentative stubborn and overflowing with pride but his faith is abiding and it is endless
31:10dear lord we give you thanks we will always offer up our hearts towards you and your glory
31:18in your name we pray amen
31:23we beg you to come back and walk among us again
31:37the one who gave his life for you
31:40he it is who speaks in you
31:43come back to us holy boy find your way back to the land you love
31:48where you found your heart
31:50come back to us
31:53you
31:58it is
32:00there
32:04My name is Patrick.
32:28I am a deacon of the Christian church,
32:31and I have returned to bring the faith to Hibernia.
32:34Returned?
32:36I was a Roman slave,
32:38captured as a young man,
32:41and brought across the sea to this village to serve Milku.
32:46Six years later, after tending to his sheep in the far hills,
32:51I made my way home.
32:53I escaped.
32:56And you returned?
32:59Yes.
33:01To pay for my freedom.
33:06I have no memory of you.
33:09But I'm happy to oblige.
33:12You will pay me with your fine Christian head.
33:17Now, down on your knees.
33:30So eager to die.
33:33Ready to die.
33:35Always.
33:36Always.
33:37Because I have my God and my Saviour by my side,
33:41within me and without me.
33:44Whatever punishment you lay upon me,
33:46whatever you do to me and to my flesh,
33:49you can't really kill me.
33:52God is with me.
33:54The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
33:57So, you came here to die?
34:02I returned here to Hibernia,
34:05to bring you the great gift of Jesus and his teachings,
34:09and the promise of eternal life for all of us.
34:14That includes you.
34:16God has nothing but love for you.
34:21And so do I.
34:22Oh.
34:23That is so good to hear.
34:27Cronan.
34:30Offered his head.
34:33Now.
34:46Do it now.
34:54Now!
34:55I will not harm a hair on that man's head.
35:20Nor will you.
35:25Who has the heart to kill this Christian?
35:32Who?
35:34Is there anyone?
35:36Do I have to kill him myself?
35:55Why are you crying, brother?
36:09Why did you come back here?
36:12To bring you into the light of God.
36:25We have to kill him.
36:26You are so sorry.
36:27We're so sorry.
36:28We'll be back to this Christian.
36:29I'm sorry.
36:30I'm sorry.
36:31I'm sorry.
36:32I don't want to.
36:34I don't want to.
36:35I'm sorry.
36:36What does he do?
36:39I don't want me to kill you.
36:47I don't want me to kill you.
36:48I've got to kill you.
36:50I have to kill you.
36:51I don't want you to kill you.
37:22I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
37:52You are forgiven.
37:56All is forgiven in the light of God.
38:02Dear Lord, on this sacred site we will build our church, the first of many.
38:09And now, with this holy water, I will baptize anyone who will come forth and walk in the
38:17way of the Lord.
38:22Good woman.
38:25Bless you.
38:25I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:32I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
38:48You answered my call.
38:58Of course I did.
39:01God watches over us all.
39:03He sent a son who lived among people many years ago, and his son's name was Jesus.
39:13And he died.
39:16But then he returned from death.
39:17Just like you.
39:24This leaf is the Father, God.
39:28And this leaf next to it is the Son, Jesus Christ.
39:32And this third leaf is the Holy Ghost.
39:36There they are, all three of them, on separate leaves.
39:41But they are together, on the same stem.
39:45Because they are separate.
39:48But they are one.
39:49We found a wonderful place for the church, didn't we?
40:08Yes, we did.
40:19Patrick returned to Ireland in 433 A.D.
40:33It was said that in the decades that followed,
40:36he established 700 churches and ordained 5,000 priests.
40:41By the time of Patrick's death in 461,
40:44what had once been a pagan stronghold
40:47was transformed into a beacon of the Christian faith.
41:03We took the bare bones of the story of St. Patrick,
41:06and we tried to make a tale of a spiritual awakening
41:10and a spiritual discipline,
41:13which led to his power as a leader in the church.
41:17I just, I love that we see somebody
41:20coming to spiritual revelation, really,
41:26out of the hellscape of slavery.
41:28He kind of came to God
41:30through those two roads that so many of us do,
41:34through nature,
41:35first being a shepherd of the animals,
41:38and then through prayer.
41:41Prayer and the solitude,
41:42and the beauty of the solitude.
41:46And the only one he can share with is God.
41:49And the care of the sheep is the metaphor for the whole thing.
41:52Yeah, and he goes back,
41:54which is incredible for me.
41:55He goes back.
41:55He could have just stayed at home
41:57and said, that was a terrible time.
41:58I was a slave, right?
42:00That's right.
42:00He didn't have to go back to Hibernia,
42:01but he did.
42:01And so that, to me,
42:03is the part that's the most moving.
42:04You mentioned solitude.
42:05I love that this episode has so few words
42:08compared to some of the others.
42:09That's right.
42:09He's by himself.
42:11We think of a missionary
42:12as shouting from the housetops,
42:14urging people to come to the gospel,
42:16but he carries this faith from the continent
42:19onto this island inside,
42:21and he bears it within him in solitude,
42:24but it's still so powerful
42:25that it keeps him alive,
42:27the way it's kept so many imprisoned
42:28and enslaved people alive.
42:30Right.
42:30And he feels sent,
42:32which is what a missionary is.
42:33Missio means to be sent.
42:34He feels sent to go back to Ireland
42:37and preach by not only words,
42:39but by his example.
42:41He must have been incredibly charismatic, too.
42:43And, you know, like St. Peter before him,
42:45a tough guy as well.
42:46He apparently was a tough guy
42:47and was hard-headed
42:48and caused a lot of arguments.
42:50In religious communities,
42:51we say the saints and the martyrs.
42:53The martyrs are the ones
42:54that have to live with the saints.
42:56You know, saints are tough people.
42:57They're demanding, right?
42:58And they have to be,
43:00and they can be tough to live with
43:01and tough to work with and work for.
43:03After Patrick created
43:05or helped create the church in Ireland,
43:07Ireland was cut off from the rest of Europe.
43:09That period of becoming Christian
43:11and monasteries actually developing.
43:15In other words,
43:15there's two or three people first,
43:17and it becomes bigger and 20,
43:19and then they make a little monastery.
43:20And then that monastery took upon them
43:22all the literature and knowledge
43:25of what was left of the Western Roman Empire.
43:29One monk, one book,
43:30transferring line by line, by hand.
43:32They're the ones who saved
43:34so much of Western civilization.
43:37And so they had that power, too,
43:38the power of knowledge.
43:39St. Patrick is certainly instrumental.
43:41And as you were saying, Marty,
43:43the development of the monasteries
43:44is key to understand Irish Catholicism.
43:47I think what's so interesting
43:48is the influence that the Irish church,
43:50the Irish Catholic church,
43:51had on the rest of the world,
43:53particularly the United States, right?
43:55So not only Irish immigrants coming,
43:57but the clergy and the bishops
43:59being largely Irish.
44:01That small island, right,
44:02has this outsized influence
44:04on the rest of the church,
44:05and I think still does today.
44:06We invented a kind of turning point,
44:09actually was inspired by a scene
44:10from Inmar Bergman's film,
44:12The Virgin Spring,
44:13where this act of brutality
44:14is followed by a signal from the divine,
44:19a sign of grace that kind of leads to redemption,
44:22and that is the water from the stone.
44:24You know, in making films and literature,
44:26there's a tradition of sudden spiritual enlightenment.
44:29Fiction and cinema,
44:31I think they could give us a model
44:32for considering spiritual possibilities in our lives.
44:37William James,
44:38he distinguished between once-born people
44:40and twice-born,
44:41and the twice-born is the strong convert,
44:44the kind that you're describing here.
44:45Yes.
44:46And then Flannery O'Connor said,
44:47well, if you're a dramatic artist,
44:49you're going to be drawn to the twice-born,
44:51because that,
44:52the shortest line between two points
44:54is a sudden, violent episode.
44:56That's right.
44:56That dramatic change in a person's life
44:59that happens through these experiences
45:00is just much more dramatic
45:02when it happens to the man being knocked off his horse,
45:05or what happens in this episode.
45:07Is it artistic license?
45:08No, I think there's something
45:09that gets to the heart of how religion operates.
45:21Yes!
45:22Oh!
45:23Oh!
45:26Oh!
45:53Oh!
45:55Oh!
45:56Oh!
45:56I don't know.
46:26I don't know.
