00:00I
00:30This time on Rides Down Under Workshop Wars, it's all about the Oz Wheels Smoke Bomber.
00:38This HQ burnout monster started out as a dream, a 164 scale die-cast model designed by the
00:45Oz Wheels team.
00:47We check out the process of how Luke Mitchell's evil garage turned the HZ shell into a 1500
00:54horsepower HQ beast in just nine weeks.
01:02We're up at Maroochydore at Wilkie's Pro Paints and we are kicking off D-Day for the Smoke Bomber
01:151 to 1 build.
01:16So the original concept, we were sitting down and trying to think of how we could tie into
01:20some of the things that we love the most about Australiana culture.
01:23Now I'm a very big vet supporter so we wanted to tie in something military so we started
01:28going back and forth with a few different ideas and we love the idea of giving some of our
01:32cars backstories.
01:34So with this one, Tiny and myself came up with the idea, two brothers get a car from a backyard
01:39shed all rusted out, pull it out and turn it into a burnout champion.
01:44So we've done that with the model and today we're here with the 1 to 1.
01:48Today we're up at Wilkie's Pro Paints here in Maroochydore and we're bringing up the Oz Wheels
01:52to a smoke bomber.
01:53So this is day one of building and we're aiming to get this done in 12 weeks.
01:57Currently we've got our HZ shell.
01:59We couldn't find a decent QE shell that we were looking for in our time frame so we found
02:03a nice rust free body of a HZ shell.
02:05So in doing that we need to change the plenum, the whole front kit, build in the taillights
02:09at the rear where the bumper turns, a new boot lid, multiple dash altercations but we're
02:14going to do something custom there.
02:15Yeah, we're going to start ripping this front end out today and convert it to a HQ and then
02:20we'll start tubbing it.
02:21Custom dash, custom material, firewall, dummy up all the motor, etc.
02:25So the first step here is where we'll pull all the HZ panels off the front.
02:29We'll pull the standard HZ front end out.
02:32We've got a new front end that we're going to bolt in immediately to troll fit.
02:37Because we have to troll fit the HQ front guards, we need the front end in the car to be able
02:43to mount the radiator support, to be able to put the nose panel on the front guards.
02:47That will be needed to replace the cowl panel which this one's a weld on item so we need
02:52to cut that off and trial fit all the HQ stuff to then weld the HQ wiper cowl panel on.
02:59The back of the car is probably the trickiest one because HZs have the lights on the quarter
03:04panels, HQ have them in the bumper bar so we have to make some cheap metal to weld up the
03:09quarter panels to then put the lights in the bumpers.
03:1312 weeks is absolutely insane and when Luke pitched the idea I said, are you sure we can
03:27do this?
03:28But of course I trust him implicitly and he's so organised and structured with what he does.
03:33For me personally to see this car step to that sort of quality in the timeframe is going to
03:38be something really, really special.
03:40It should be a great project because Luke's quality of cars he builds is show quality.
03:44I trust Luke, Luke's built many amazing cars to date, if he says we can do it in 12 weeks
03:49we can do it in 12 weeks.
03:50So with this car I just want to make like a multiple use promo car for say so we can put
03:54it on display, we can take it and do a big skid with the burnout comp, we can take it down
03:58the track and have fun in it and then we can sort of tick all the driving events.
04:02From the seals up we're going to make it to a show level.
04:05Obviously that'll entail obviously nice gapping, straight panels, billet and custom everywhere
04:10where possible.
04:11We're just going to do a nice stone guard, nice flat fall, original sort of style under
04:15the car, just because it's going to get peppered in tyres.
04:17We've fitted the HQ panels, HQ nose panel, make sure that's alright.
04:23The cowl panel's been fitted up, everything's been gapped up, we've pulled all the HQ panels
04:27back off, now we're getting into welding the HQ cowl panel on to make all that fit nice.
04:34While the boys were finishing off at the front end, Darren and I started at the rear templating
04:38up to weld up the provision for the HZ tail lights to essentially build in a quarter panel
04:43to make it look like a HQ quarter panel.
04:46So we've lined up the HQ boot lid, lined up the HQ rear bumper bar and basically made
04:52some cardboard templates, transferred on to steel and now we're slowly welding them in
04:57to make a HQ quarter panel essentially.
05:00We've got to really take care to make sure that the gaps on the piece that we're adding
05:04on are the same gap as the rest of the boot lid, so yes it does come down.
05:10We're talking halves of millimetres or even smaller than that to make sure that everything
05:15looks like it was meant to be there.
05:18To do the rear we obviously put the HQ boot on, took the HZ boot off, again they have
05:22different body lines in the middle, the HQ is a rounded boot, the HZ have two sharp lines
05:28and we're doing that so we get the boot on, make it square to the quarters and then as
05:33we run down then we know and we can run a nice straight line from the bottom of the boot
05:36lid to the top of the bar and that will be our true line and then make the old tail lights
05:41which are now going to be quarter panel filled in to be square.
05:44The second hand HQ boot lid we got really lined up nice with the HZ quarter panels so we've
05:49gapped that up, we've got really nice gaps and then the extensions that we're making are
05:54just flowing on from those gaps.
05:57Myself plus the boys here at Wilkie's Pro Paints we're pretty excited about getting into
06:01it and always like a challenge of a 12 week build, we've done a few before and we've got
06:06them across the line so it's all about having a good team really.
06:09Coming up Luke from Evil Garage begins work on the Oz Wheels HQ Smoke Bomber rear tubs.

07:34When you purchase a machine from Hair and Forbes Machinery House it's not just a sale,
07:39it's a partnership.
07:48Today we're actually full steam ahead in fabricating the new 3mm tubs.
08:06Straight up this morning Ethan started working getting the new tubs in the car so first we
08:11got some 3mm.
08:13Ethan spent some time getting that in and profiling it to the outside of the car and then we've
08:18spent some time getting the round bar attached to that profile and then we're able to set
08:24the side panel up and then template that out to suit it so yes definitely a lot of work
08:29doing it this way.
08:30Normally we make them out of either 1.2 or 1.6 depending on the application and doing
08:36them that way we're able to bead roll a nice 40 or 50mm radius up around the top edge just
08:42to give it that nice smooth look.
08:44These are full 3mm tubs, top, sides so a lot harder to work with and we weren't able to
08:52bead roll them so Luke and I came up with an idea of getting some round bar rolled up and
08:57we've cut 90 degree sections out of the round bar to make a radius so the finished product
09:04is going to look like a nice bead rolled 1.6mm tub but in fact they're going to be 3mm.
09:15We're making 3mm tubs because it's a burnout car so when the tyre pops it's not going to
09:19bend the tub like 3mm strong.
09:21So we actually got some pipe bent and then we've cut down the guts and a 90 out to give
09:28us two rolled edges for each tub so when we weld them in it'll look like it's a rolled tub so
09:33yeah we just got a bit of straight bar bent her up and got that in.
09:40Getting the chassis rails sorted after just cutting the factory ones out has been a bit
09:43of a process just because there's so many profiles and shapes that up and down vertically
09:49as well as in and out horizontally so it's not too time consuming to temple them out of
09:55a bit of cardboard or a bit of board and when you transfer it onto 3mm trying to roll and
10:00fold a piece of 3mm if it's not square the shape can deviate so quickly so there's a
10:07lot of work and a lot of time goes into replacing a chassis rail in the car.
10:15About done going.
10:20Being a burnout car we've decided to go with a 3mm tub.
10:24There's definitely a lot of work in going for 3mm like the difference between just cutting
10:29a tub down the middle doing a split tub and then what we've done we're cutting everything
10:33out and starting from scratch.
10:35Having to move the rails so make custom rails underneath so there's definitely a lot of work
10:39that goes into it compared to just a normal straight car that just gets a split tub in it.
10:51I've always said with these cars to a point they become art.
10:55Whether it's the noise, whether it's the shaping of the body panels, it goes away from being a vehicle.
11:01It comes a part of your personality and who you are and this talks a lot about these guys right
11:07because if you have a look over this car it is absolutely incredible.
11:11The intention to detail and the things they've added in all over the car is just insane.
11:19Ethan's done a great job today getting the driver's side tub fully finished.
11:23Chassis rails fully finished.
11:25He's got the tub on the passenger side all welded in.
11:28The whole inside of the boot is all going to be smooth and painted satin black.
11:31We're leaning towards no trim in there at all.
11:34We want to show everything off and show all the work especially the tubs and the boot floor.
11:38So a lot of care has been taken to make sure that the tubs are the same width,
11:43they're the same height, level, plumb, radiuses are the same.
11:47Just so it looks perfectly symmetrical and just looks really neat.
12:00So it's day 13 on the Smoke Momma build and we are here at Wilkie's Pro Paints.
12:09All the firewall has been completely welded in and all primed and ready to go.
12:15They've got the tubs all done in the rear and all primed and ready to go.
12:19It seems like there's not that much more that's not ready to go so yeah it looks like an exciting time ahead.
12:25There's obviously a lot of parts now that the tubs have been completely welded in that things will have
12:29to be re-test fit to make sure that all our gaps stayed the same and that everything is all a-okay.
12:37For the last two days we've been finishing off all the grinding and welding on the chassis rails and on the tubs.
12:45Everything's been fully ground.
12:47We got in yesterday afternoon, prepped all the steel up, it's been epoxy primed and undercoated.
12:53Also over the last few days we've finished welding all the work on the firewall.
12:57Same thing and it's all been cleaned up, epoxy primed and undercoated, ready to move forward in the engine bay.
13:05I'm definitely happy to be off the floor and grinding in the heat underneath there but
13:09there's still a little bit left to do. We're going to put a custom sheet metal dash in this so the next
13:13stage after everything's mocked up I'm going to jump back up the front here and try and fabricate
13:18a bit of a custom dash, something a bit different yeah. With the front hoops of the roll cage we're
13:24going to have to section the dash where they come through which is no big deal because we're going
13:29to be making a custom dash so Ethan will be also looking at that, scalloping out the dash, mounting the
13:35front legs of the cage and then we'll start the actual sheet metal at the custom dash. So that's the main plans for today.
13:43The diff we got in the car, it's all the right length, the wheels fit really good. We've just got a few tweaks to do on the
13:59actual mounting points, set up the coilover tabs. Very happy with how the diff's fitting in the car.
14:05We've got all good clearance everywhere, the stance is where we wanted it to be. Just a couple of tweaks on the
14:10lower mounts and set up the coilovers in the car and we'll be underway real soon. So today the boys
14:17smashed it out, they got the roll cage all in and mounted, they got the wheels and the diff all mounted
14:21in the rear end and got all the HQ panels on the front which brings us basically to our stage two model.
14:28The way that we finished off on day 13 with the diff under the car, the big simmons under the rear,
14:34all the HQ panels back on. We've got the steering column back in, Ethan's setting up the dash,
14:40the cage is in, the driver's seat's still in there. Anyone that walked in now would think,
14:45how cool is that? Looks like a HQ but an out car. So really, really happy with where it's going.
15:04Coming up, Loop starts the 1500 horsepower LS build for the Auswheels Smokebomber.
15:20Jansis Equipment is a distributor for global leading brands such as Benpak, Sturtle Coney,
15:24Byers Bath. So we spy hoist lifting equipment, specialised testing equipment throughout Australia
15:30in all segments. Whether it's a car dealership, right the way through to a car enthusiast,
15:35or a truck dealership, right the way through to truck enthusiast. The difference we see with
15:39the Benpak hoist is not just with the ergonomical technology that we use when we're operating the
15:45hoist and lifting the hoist, it's all about safety and longevity. We can put anyone under the hoist and
15:50we know they're safe. With a Benpak hoist, there's no complicated buttons to use. When we want the
15:56hoist to go up, we press the button. In return, then when we want to lower the hoist down, it's just a
16:00matter of lifting a handle and that releases the safety locks. We just press the button and it
16:05steadily brings that car down. In our Benpak range, we have the two-poist hoist, which is very,
16:12very popular. But we do the four-poist hoist and that's anything from a car to a truck in the four-poist
16:17range. So the versatility for whatever you're using in any type of application in a workshop,
16:23we've got the hoist there to accommodate that.
16:28Yeah, so this week the boys were building the engine. So the main one doing that was Dan and
16:44he was building the engine actually at his house. So myself and Luke were there the very first night
16:49until about one o'clock in the morning, but they did all the spacing and all the gaps. They put the
16:53bearings in and everything as well. So it came out really, really, really well. And other than that,
16:57really, Dan's been punching it out, majorly by himself.
17:03This engine, we want it to be reliable. We don't want to put just a standard motor in there that
17:07we've got to replace every six months because it's cooked and no doubt every time they blow up,
17:12it's had the worst possible time. And you're trying to compete and you've driven all that way and you
17:15get one skid into it and it's game over. So trying to build a reliable, big horsepower engine,
17:20which normally don't go in the same sentence. So within doing that, we're trying to use quality
17:25components, making sure it's all measured properly. We're confident with it all, writing a maintenance
17:30schedule on where everything should be checked and when and how and maintaining that.
17:37So Dan's trying to set up the degree wheel at the moment. We've already set up our piston stop
17:43and our pointer ready to go. So we're going to dial in to get our top dead center, zero. So within doing
17:50that, we're going to wind down the piston stop, turn the engine around, find the number,
17:55turn it back around, find the number, divide it in half so that it's zero. That'll be our true zero.
18:01So that's on the top lift, full lift. So we're going to go back 50.
18:07So yeah, lock off the stop, see the piston's actually recessed in. So it's not up,
18:13which means that we can get our degree kind of started setting up at 15. So if it was at zero,
18:20when we turn it back over the other way, it'd be 15 again.
18:25So that's 50 thou before top lift, write down that number. So now 50 thou pass,
18:31about zero again. So yeah, this is very important to find your true top dead cell.
18:37Obviously just running your finger on top of the piston isn't accurate because the piston can sit
18:42at zero for a point. It has about eight degrees of rock on the top.
18:48But it's all about the compression stroke. So it's coming up now. That's zero. So you're coming
18:5550 thou on the intake. So now we're doing lobe separation. So lobe separation is what the cam,
19:05to dial the camshaft in. Our lobe sets 12, 112 that we're chasing on this. So the intake's then
19:11along, we go full lift, back it off 50, write down that number, turn it over and go past 50,
19:18write down that number and add them together.
19:19So on the cam gear, it's got numbers, plus eight, plus six, plus four, plus two, zero, minus two,
19:35minus four. And then it has numbers also on the teeth. So if you're doing it at four,
19:41you need to do it four on the teeth. Now that was out, so we're going to try zero.
19:45Most cams are normally four plus, so they might have already cut it on four plus two,
19:52which is common. So now we'll go mark zero and then reset it up and do the lobe set again.
20:05So now you'll see we're lined up. See our zero. So now it's back to center line.
20:23Dan, I've known him for a long time. His workmanship on building engines is next level.
20:29We get these people all the time saying to us, oh, you can put that motor together in a day.
20:33I don't know any motor that goes together in a day when you actually measure everything properly.
20:38Measuring all your clearances on the crank rods. The machine shops say they get it right,
20:43but they machine without the bearings, obviously. I always like to triple check it myself.
20:49You buy a box of bearings, mate. No two bearings in that one box are the same.
20:54You watch many engine builders on all these shows and they have a big cartridge on their wall.
20:57If you look in close, they only have a texter written on the back with how thick that bearing
21:02was to actually make a set. That's sort of how it's going to be done, but we don't have
21:08in Australia access to have 50 sets of different bearings of every bearing on the shelf. Within doing
21:14that, we also dial in the camshaft properly, lift the ball clearance. Many, many more conclusions.
21:21I built a fair few engines with Daniel. For myself as well, I built my LJ motor,
21:26Tonner motor, Monara motor, every other car I've owned motor. All my friends' cars' motors many times.
21:34Dan's taught me a lot of lessons on motors, how to do them. They are a time-consuming beast.
21:41Their biggest trick there is not rushing and making sure everything's measured and measured and measured.
21:51After the break, Loop drops a 1500 horsepower LS into the Auswheel Smoke Bomber.
22:08I wanted to give Shane and Ermie some inspiration on the restoration of their RT charger.
22:14I make the wall arts, old school wall art myself, and they're all made out of 1.6mm sheet metal and
22:20painted in 2k. Sizes range from 1m to 3m. And yeah, delivery Oz wide with Australia Post and Freight,
22:30we're available. Also 1m sizes to New Zealand. I've got a Facebook page where anyone can check it out
22:36on there and old school wall art. They're all laser cut. Folds are put into them in certain areas,
22:43not the whole thing, but just the main ones to give them some style and as much as possible
22:49towards the vehicles themselves. Look, it's a hobby that I started off a couple of years ago
22:55and it's something I really enjoy doing. I've been a painter for over 30 years and it's something I
23:00really get a lot of enjoyment out of. I get a lot of orders from people, birthdays, Christmas presents,
23:05guys wanting them on their sheds, in their walls, everywhere. I've been sending them all over Australia.
23:10I can do any make and model cars, anyone that prefers what they want. And I've done a lot of
23:15XY, GTs, XB, Caprese, Quartiners, lots of different styles. Turnaround is from order,
23:24four to six weeks. These are a great gift for anyone that's a car enthusiast. There's a lot of work in it,
23:30mate. A lot of work, but hey, listen, at the end of the day, you get the enjoyment out of working on
23:36them and the car will be magnificent when it's finished.
23:52Today is Friday, so it's officially the start of week number five. We went up to Jason's last
23:57Sunday. We got off to stand in the spray booth, got it rolling. We've more or less just got the front end
24:01in and the diff in just to get it rolling, get it on the trailer, get it home, get it on the hoist so
24:04we can get under it more accurately and dial it all in. Got all the front suspension in, got all the
24:09air jacks working in the front, got all the diff dialed in, got the pinion angle at ride height.
24:14Pinion angle won't change because as weight goes in the car, we'll just give it more spring pressure
24:18and get the ride height back to the desired height. Beginning of the week, we started dynamatting
24:23inside all the car, in the boot, all the panelling, ready for Kevin, so we can start running his wires all
24:28over it. He came Monday morning, he's been chipping away at getting all the wiring done. We did Haltech
24:33Nexus, wideband module, EGTs for the motor. We've done a PDM as well because we're probably going to
24:39run out of inputs to run all the body. Within doing that, we made an aluminium panel that bolted up to
24:43the firewall so then we could nut-set all the computer on so it could be easily removed in and out,
24:48not trying to hold a nut and bolt behind a panel and struggle. With Kevin, we've ran the battery
24:53isolators to the rear. We ran all the battery cables from the back of the car to the front,
24:57to a battery post, so that we could then jump off that for all our plumbing. The UC-10 Haltech dash,
25:03we've already mounted that in the car before it was painted, so it's ready for Kevin to start wiring.
25:20So this week, the boys were building the engine, so the main one doing that was Dan, and he was
25:24building the engine actually at his house. So myself and Luke were there the very first night
25:28until about one o'clock in the morning, but they did all the spacing and all the gaps. They put the
25:32bearings in and everything as well, so it came out really, really, really well. But they did drop the
25:37engine over yesterday or today, which was super, super exciting, and test fitting it in the car,
25:42so that's something I've been really, really looking forward to. I haven't seen all of it so far,
25:47but watching it all pieced together and how it's going to look when it comes together, I'm so excited to see
25:52it all sit in the car today. It's one of the things I've been the most looking forward to
25:56throughout this build, so seeing it all to come together and then of course getting to be a part
26:00of it as well, something really, really special. Dan and myself has been helping us with the motor.
26:06We've been doing that nearly every night this week. He's worked the last two days solid on it,
26:11getting it together. The motors, as motors do, fired us all along the way. We mic'd up all the crank,
26:16it was all perfect for the machine shop, all the main caps were perfect. We finished up today with
26:21ending on the great weeks. It started week five with an assembled engine in the front end. We've
26:27just got to change a few bolts out in the engine plate, etc. We didn't quite have the right bolts
26:32tonight, but we wanted to get it in, so we'll just change them out tomorrow. Our converter, another
26:37issue along the way. We ordered it from America about four weeks ago. Finally turned up today,
26:43opened the box. It's for a hammy. It's not our converter. So we got straight on the phone to them
26:49in America tonight because we love working all night anyway when they get up in the morning.
26:55So they're going to punch one out for a couple days for us now and air freight it over, so they
26:59really came to the party with helping us fix this issue because we're definitely on a time crunch and
27:03it's going to cost us a week and no converter of getting rolling on the car. Also that will mean the
27:08gearbox have to come out again, put the converter back in, gearbox back in. But by doing this mounting
27:14this way, now I can continue to have the whole engine bay plumbed, have the shifter set up,
27:19have a tail shaft length off the gearbox because I need to be able to order a tail shaft length
27:23from the box to the diff face. That'll take about a week, so I need to get that organised ASAP
27:29because we're about three weeks in countdown to the dyno, mate. So the engine going into the car
27:33actually makes it feel more like a real car, I suppose. So we're ticking all the boxes and moving
27:38along at tremendous speed. I mean, every time I see the car, I joke that it looks more and more like a
27:44real car, but the amount of work they're progressing over the days is just something I've never
27:48witnessed before in my life.
28:05Coming up, we head to Rocky Nats for the grand unveiling of this insane build.
28:14So we're down here at Rocky Nats. We set up the smoke bomber ready for unveil last night before
28:32everyone got in here so no one could see the car. We've been setting up the LJ all morning today,
28:36ready. So yeah, I feel the boys come up and gave us a hand, setting everything up. As you can imagine,
28:41there's many moving parts to set all this up and doing it on your own and take forever. So I had
28:45a few good mates to come and help. Yeah, so it's been a busy few weeks. We ended up building in nine
28:50weeks and two days from start to finish. It was a big push in the end, but we got there.
28:55Wrapping's all done. Obviously ultra fussy with the wrapping, trying to make sure it all lines up.
29:00We've got a few trick bits in there for you to see. Pushed the wrap all through the door jam and mirrored it and
29:05done some unique stuff there. So we are finally here. We are up at Rocky Nats and it has been an
29:13insane last few weeks. So the boys absolutely smashed through the wrap process and got it done
29:18as quick and efficiently as we possibly could in the time frame. But personally, myself,
29:22I haven't actually seen the car yet. So the unveil for me is going to be something really, really,
29:27really special. Really, really looking forward to what the judges think of the car and of course,
29:31what all the collectors and fans of the brand think too. So Jesse hasn't seen the car for about
29:35three weeks now. He was in China for the last week and a half, two weeks. So I said to him,
29:40don't come help set up, stay away. And I'd rather him get the surprise as well with the unveil so he
29:44can see it all finish. Three weeks sounds like not much to see in the car, but the rate we're having
29:49to go out. A lot happens in three weeks. So Oz Wheels, we've got a big 12 by nine stand this time
30:06around. So we went a little bit bigger than what we've done before. We've got walls set up all around
30:10the stand. We've brought every product that we have currently in stock. So I mean, we're really,
30:16really excited about the products we have down here. We have some 124 stuff as well from the
30:20bigger scale, which is really, really cool too. We get a bit more detail in it. And of course,
30:25all Australiana themed stuff that we're going to see walking around here. So Oz Wheels is more about
30:30the culture and the community of the brand. It's, it is ultimately about the product, but what we want
30:35to bring back is a little bit of that Australiana car culture, you know, Holden versus Ford,
30:40that bit of animosity, but the bit of respect at the same time, you know, we want to sort of bring
30:45that back a little bit more and sort of feed that car culture and embrace the community too.
31:03Rocky Nats is about high horsepower. It's about fuel. It's about rubber. It's about showing some of the
31:09best show cars that we have in this country, but also a lot of the go cars, which is the main thing
31:14that I love about these events is walking around, getting that smell, that feeling, the atmosphere,
31:19the vibration of all the engines and the notes you hear left, right and center. You just hear them
31:24pinging all over the place. And it's not just V8s, right? We're talking six turbos. There's drift cars,
31:30four cylinders wound up. So this event really encompasses everyone. So if you are car orientated,
31:37if you make car parts, if you make car models, if you make anything to do with modifications of cars or
31:42memorabilia, this is where you're going to be. So if you're an Australian car culture fan and you
31:48don't come to these events, you're really, really missing out. Yeah, really looking forward to the
31:52day and especially the unveiling this afternoon.
31:59The smoke bomber build, it is pretty special to me. People actually thought it was a real car,
32:04just from that little model toy car. And then we were like, man, we got to build this. So we approached
32:09Luke, asked him number of times to build the real car. Now this afternoon, when this thing's unveiled,
32:16hopefully I don't cry because it's unbelievable. I just, I can't wait to see the finished product
32:21from the dream that we had of building this thing as a real car that we really probably didn't think
32:26would happen to now nine weeks. And this thing is ready to rock. Can't wait to see people's reaction.
32:32I'm hoping it's a good reaction. I hope everyone's going to love it as much as we do.
32:35I think they will. It's a pretty special thing to have happened from this little tiny toy car
32:40up to this real life burnout machine.
32:46This is Smoke Bomber. I'm talking to Luke Mitchell and I'm talking to Jesse from Oz Wheels.
32:51Now Jesse, you said to Luke, what, 10 weeks ago, hey, let's build a car for Rocky Nats 05. Is that right?
32:57Yes. Pretty much. The idea was, hey, I want to build something cool and I know what you can do as a
33:02show car, but how about we build a go car? All right, this car is completely wrapped. 1970
33:08holding Kingswood. It's a four-door began as a H said. Oh, my goodness.
33:15And they sit one lower and it is one. They'll be through it.
33:22I was overseas for the last two weeks and the boys said, well, how about we just keep it a surprise?
33:27So they kept me out of the building. They've banished me down the other end and here we are. So it's the
33:31first time I get to see it in person. It's amazing.
33:41Oh, wow. Wow. Look at it. Oh.
33:48Yeah, so we went four air jacks, compressed line, the car jumps up, pulled the tires off. So when we're
33:54mid-skids, like at the burnouts, we can change our tires out quickly. Just wanted something unique.
33:59Obviously LS, 430 cube, methanol, 871, custom hat, custom spacer. Build it where possible.
34:07Cage, custom dash, custom boot.
34:09I'm trying not to scream and cry, but you know, it's something incredible to come from a concept idea
34:15of something so little. Like typically in this industry, people start with the real cars and then
34:20they scale it down. But we built this into a model and then came up with the idea to blow it up to a
34:25one-to-one. And it's just incredible. Wow.
34:28All right, folks. Folk bomber, Luke Mitchell, Jesse from Closed Wheels. This is a collaboration. I
34:35love it. We will see you once again.
34:37Love it.
34:37Wow. Look at the change. It's so much better polished. Oh.
34:46All symmetrical, two breathers. I remade a handmade boot latch, but I couldn't buy one. So
34:53I've got Mark to bring around some round bar. I've bent it up in my vice.
34:56Man, I've always said my entire life, I am a giant child at heart. And one day,
35:02I would find a way to share my love for this stuff. And it's amazing, man.
35:10So originally we were unveiling the car at Motor X. When we pitched a bit of the idea to the event
35:16organizers and the owners of the Summer Nats brand, they kind of put a little bit of fire under us and
35:22said, well, what if we can get you to come to Rocky Nats? Do you think you could get it built?
35:27Obviously, this puts us at a nine weeks and two days build time, which is absolutely ridiculous
35:34for a car of this caliber. But everyone pulled together. We pulled in favors left, right and
35:39center from everyone we know in the industry and absolutely smashed it together.
35:52Up next, we head to Motor X.
36:09Yesterday, we were running around. We actually entered in the city cruise and had a chance to
36:13take the evil LJ out on the street, which was absolutely insane. It was one of only two of the
36:19top elite cars that actually went out in the cruise out of the hall here, which was really,
36:23really awesome as well. We had tons of the crowd revving us up, tons of kids with signs out there
36:28screaming at us, send it, send it. So of course, you know, true Oswears fashion and Lukey, of course,
36:33he was hitting it, shooting flames out the back the whole way down, just absolutely having a ball.
36:38The community up here is incredible. Like there was a few guys that had a few issues on the cruise
36:42route and straight away, all the boys from the side were jumping in and pushing the cars and getting
36:46them wherever they needed to go. It was really, really awesome to see the support throughout
36:50the community and especially for some of the boys that had a few issues. Tons of guys jumped in and
36:55give them a hand. So we spent a few hours down at the drags this morning and watched good friend
37:01Scott Hitwell in his Cortina. Of course, he was sporting the Oswears logo down the side and he was
37:07absolutely blitzing it. What I mean by this is he was eight, 10 miles an hour down the quarter faster
37:15than most of the competitors. He come off the trailer and ran an amazing sub seven second time.
37:23Absolutely tail spinning half the guys down there and even more impressive when you find out that
37:28Scott was the one doing quite a bit of the tuning on the car. Scotty runs Warfare Motorsports. He's got
37:33quite a few cars that he runs in drags, some ET street stuff and wow one of the baddest cars I think
37:39I've ever seen. This morning we came in, went to fire up smoke bomber, we were going to go do the grand
37:59champion drive. We pulled the engine apart a few bits and found two faulty injectors. We ended up
38:06replacing them, get it all running again. The car's all running but we decided that we had enough pain
38:10for the day and didn't want to have another technical issue with cars as cars do. It's all part of the
38:16game mate. This is what we call the teething stage. So it's all new and it's all fresh when it's got to
38:20iron out a few bugs. It's common in every car. In the end Luke did manage to get the car running and going
38:28but I made the decision to put it back in and on display because we just didn't want to push it too
38:33far. But ultimately it ended up all right because we ended up down at the burnouts and saw some
38:39absolutely wild cars. Hammering limiters, hammering tyres. A few even hit the walls which was a little
38:47bit interesting. So some reverse skids, some big tip-ins, just awesome content. You know to go through all of
38:54that after a bit of a rocky morning. At the end of the day it absolutely pushed us through the roof
38:59and we just have finished up at the Oz Wheels Pit Stop Party where the Smoke Bomber took away
39:06three awards which is absolutely incredible considering it was built in nine weeks and two
39:13days. So a tremendous effort from all the boys but to walk away and obviously to walk up on stage and to
39:19collect these awards was something truly special and something I think I'll cherish forever. So what we
39:24ended up walking away with was actually first place in top competitor street which was really
39:29really cool. We also got second place for top interior which considering it's a burnout car I
39:36think is something pretty special and we also came in the top 20 for the streetcars which was really
39:42really cool. So walked away with three awards again just a testament to the amount of work the boys put
39:47into the car and the finished product which was incredible. Overall the whole weekend was great mate,
39:53got heaps of traffic through for Oz Wheels. We ended up winning a few prizes which was great for a
39:57really quick build and shows that we can still build to a high level in that time being judged
40:01against some of the best cars around. Start to finish we've had a massive team. I've called in many
40:06favors of good friends turning stuff around in very quick time frames. It's been great mate, a great
40:12atmosphere throughout the whole thing. Everyone's just keen to get it done but we couldn't do it without
40:16everyone. So this build really wasn't possible without all the sponsors that we had on the car.
40:21This included tons of businesses from all around Australia, tons of personal friends of Luke's as
40:27well that he called in all the favors and of course to our loyal Oz Wheels fans. For all the people who
40:33jumped onto the website and bought one of our smoke bomber tier packages this car is something we are
40:39going to ship all around the country over the next 12 months to show you exactly what the Oz Wheels brand
40:46is about. It was a bit unfortunate that we didn't get to see it out burning some tyre today but the good
40:51news about that is we are heading down to Motorex in a month's time which is going to be absolutely
40:56incredible. So you're going to see the smoke bomber out there absolutely shredding.
41:20Hey guys we are here at Motorex and the cars are finished and on the stand the smoke bomber came
41:25out absolutely incredible. What do you reckon Loogie? Yeah no it's great man. We've been getting
41:29great feedback with everyone today. We've got models one, two and three here. We've got the LJ here,
41:34trade stand, heaps of foot traffic. It's a good day. Yeah it's been an absolutely killer day so far. The
41:40stand's been packed full of people and of course the cars have been getting so much attention it's
41:44just insane. All the supporters have been coming to see a smoke bomber they haven't seen yet. So yeah this
41:48afternoon we're going to take the smoke bomber out for a lap. I'm not really sure what the cruise is doing.
41:51It's the first time Motorex ever done the cruise so I think we're out in the front there with
41:55Jakey Myers. Yeah oh it'd be interesting to get the car out on the road man I'm so keen. We're
41:59trying to see if we can do a skid coming off the burnout pad but we're still waiting for approvals
42:04and we're trying to work that out. But uh we'll see how we go. We'll still have heaps of fun and
42:08plenty of big revs. Yeah we've actually caught up in a few of our partners that helped us throughout
42:24the build with QuickBits and obviously building out here at Haltech. It's their first time actually
42:28seeing the car and they've loved it and can't believe what we did and also obviously all the
42:33supporters coming by and the general public don't even know anything about it. Yep well
42:37in the time frame too I mean you boys absolutely killed it man the amount of hours you put into it
42:42and even the guys that sponsor the vehicle that are coming down and going there's no way this was
42:46built in this time frame and just absolutely blown away by the detail you put in the car bro.
42:50No no it's good. Killed it. Oh yeah so I brought my little mate today and he needs a step.
42:58Uh yeah well I guess I'm on top of the world today aren't I? Someone's condescending.
43:12So that's a wrap up here at Motorex. Had a great weekend heaps of people through the stand.
43:17Smokebomber ended up taking home top digital design. Yeah. Sold heaps of cars mate. Done heaps of
43:23interviews. Heaps of great people. Got to go on a cruise mate out and around. Smokebomber did his
43:27first little baby skid which was really sick. All those who say it doesn't drive but they're now done.
43:33Next season on Rides Down Under Workshop Wars. The guys from Valley Grunt continue the work on the
43:49Bullet Charger. We catch up with Sue Performant who are super busy but first up their Cadillac build.
