00:00And hometown product Augie Sanchez at a non-title featherweight bout scheduled for 10 a classic case of youth versus expert favorite Augie Sanchez out of Cheyenne High School here in Las Vegas. Is he rushing into too big of a fight after his loss to Prince Nassim Hamed a wild one an unexpected opportunity Sanchez got in his licks but ultimately he was carried out on a stretcher victim of a powerful four punch combination to the head in round four but he did drop Hamed although ruled a slip interesting career he fell
00:29short of the 96 Olympics thanks to Floyd Mayweather won his first 16 KO'd in the first by a journeyman fell out of favor with the local media and then he won 10 straight until Hamed and two-time world champion Luisito Espinosa won the WBA bantamweight belt in 89 but where he really flourished as WBC featherweight champ seven successful defenses career filled with ups and downs revered in the Philippines yet he's also been yesterday's news over 16 years
00:59years in the rink many feel he's passed his prime but in his day the Filipino version of Tommy Hearns known as the Manila Hitman but he has lost two of his last three. All right let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape. As mentioned big 10 year difference in age. Espinosa has the two and a half inch height advantage. He also has a four inch edge in reach at yesterday's weigh in both a shade over featherweight in what is a 128 pound catchweight bout
01:29and he has one thirty one key rules no standing eight count no three knockdown rule a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round if an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth it's a no contest if it happens after the end of round four they go to the scorecards. 03:36Introducing Augie, Kid Vegas, Sanchez.
03:46And his opponent across the ring on my left, ready to find in the red corner in this 10-round attraction.
03:52He is wearing white trunks with gold trim.
03:55Fighting out of Daly City, California, by way of Manila in the Philippines.
04:01He weighed in at 127.5 pounds with a record of 45 wins and nine losses.
04:08He has 24 wins coming by way of knockout.
04:11Ladies and gentlemen, here is the former WBA bantamweight world champion.
04:15The former WBC featherweight world champion.
04:18And currently ranked the number three contender.
04:22Introducing Luisito Estrada.
04:25Espinoza.
04:30Once again, a referee in charge, Joe Cortez.
04:33Now to get instructions, 10 rounds of boxing schedule.
04:38All right, gentlemen.
04:39We went over the rules of the dressing room.
04:42I expect a good, clean fight.
04:44Obey my commands at all times.
04:46I want good sportsmen like Connick, understand?
04:49I want you to keep those punches up.
04:50I don't want anything right below here.
04:52They're still good.
04:52Everything is a little high right here, Luis.
04:54All right, give me a clean fight.
04:55Remember, guys, I'm fair, but I'm firm.
04:57Touch him up.
05:00Much riding on these performances tonight in terms of title contention.
05:04Bobby, your key.
05:05Well, for Espinoza, the first thing he has to do is use good lateral movement.
05:08Sanchez is flat-footed.
05:09Also, keep a fast pace.
05:10Sanchez's never been past seven.
05:12And lastly, use his range.
05:14Good overhand right.
05:15It's a key.
05:18For Sanchez, he has to come forward.
05:20He's very flat-footed.
05:20He can't win this fight going backwards.
05:22Also, control that pace so he's comfortable.
05:24Those late rounds could be important.
05:26And land his power shots.
05:27He has good power in both hands.
05:28Hopefully wear Espinoza down and route to a victory.
05:31Sanchez, not known as a fast starter, takes a while to warm up, although he averages just
05:37over three rounds, an aggressive pressure-type guy with a lot of heart.
05:42Espinoza at his best.
05:43Very aggressive, busy, always coming forward.
05:46In the ring is mentioned over 16 years.
05:49He told us two more years, and that's going to do it.
05:51So my question, Bobby, as we open up here, is Espinoza too experienced for Sanchez or
05:56too old?
05:57Well, you know, Steve, especially if this fight gets late, rounds 8, 9, 10, 11.
06:01Well, you know 11 in this fight, but he's been 10, he's been 11, he's been 12.
06:05Those late-round experienced fighters, the fight gets late.
06:08It'll be a huge factor.
06:09Sanchez has good punching power, an explosive left hook.
06:12That's his knockout punch, his primary weapon.
06:15However, the right was very effective against Prince Nassim Hamed.
06:18He has eight first-round knockouts.
06:21But he's never been past round seven.
06:24So Espinoza said he'll fight a fast pace, make Sanchez work, keep on his heels, and eventually
06:30he'll wear Sanchez down.
06:32Sanchez is normally a flat-footed type fighter.
06:35Sanchez is very methodical, very slow to start, and he picks his spots.
06:39He doesn't go crazy.
06:40He likes to work his way in and feel what he needs to feel as he puts it to get in the groove.
06:44And I'll tell you what, first fight back off the Hamed fight, he's taking on a legitimate
06:49threat in Espinoza, and I tip my hat to him.
06:50A lot of guys take walkovers just to get back in the winning town, get in their groove.
06:54He's taking a legitimate threat.
06:56Sanchez, like tonight's main event fighter Roberto Garcia, not ducking tough opponents.
07:02Sanchez says the fact that he's never gone real deep into a fight is not a factor.
07:06He trains for 10 rounds.
07:08As he said, it's not my fault that they didn't make it.
07:11Right.
07:13If he's going to knock people out, why not continue to do that?
07:19Well, he says he's not only fully recovered from the loss to Hamed in August.
07:23He says he's gained from it.
07:24It made him a better fighter, more disciplined.
07:27Time will tell.
07:27You know, it's how fighters come back from big-time losses is the gauging of the caliber of their
07:34character and of the caliber of the fighter that they can become.
07:36And sometimes it destroys fighters and sometimes it does make them better.
07:40And particularly the dramatic way he left that fight on a stretcher, went to a hospital,
07:46and he was really hammered by Hamed in that fourth round.
07:51A terrific combination to the head that sent him strolling.
07:57And Sanchez said he'll combat Espinosa's busy, aggressive style by staying in control
08:01and pressuring Espinosa.
08:04Espinosa averages close to seven rounds per fight, but said if he feels his opponent can't
08:08hurt him, he'll go for the KO.
08:1015 of his 24 knockouts are in three rounds or less.
08:13Right now, the best punch landed by Sanchez has been the overhand right, and the counter
08:18hook for Espinosa has been his weapon.
08:22Yeah, he feels his best strength is his counterpunching, Espinosa.
08:26But, by and large, he's an aggressive, busy fighter who likes to press the action, as you can see.
08:33Espinosa's got a nice, long, rangy body, seat tall and sharp.
08:36He can lean and bang if he missed punches and get great leverage on his counterpunches.
08:40That's why he had been compared in Manila to Tommy Hearns.
08:43Long in the lead with raw power.
08:52Okay, good job, good job.
08:53Keep giving him the different angles, okay?
08:57All right, don't, don't, don't back straight up on him.
08:59Keep snapping that jab, he can't do nothing, he's just following him, okay?
09:03Keep giving, keep giving him the, the lateral movement, okay?
09:06No, no, no, no, watch that.
09:08No, no, yeah, hold on, let me get, let me get him back.
09:10Relax, relax, relax, relax.
09:11So, yeah, let me get that.
09:13Give him some more, okay?
09:17Miguel, .
09:19Nice of your life.
09:20Augie, your jab is working, you gotta throw it a little more, okay?
09:22He's not hitting you with nothing now.
09:24The hands are right there where they want to be.
09:26Just keep him right up on top of yourself.
09:28He's looking for the big shot now.
09:30That was the best he's got, round number one.
09:32This is the second best he's got, round number two.
09:34You understand what I'm saying, do you?
09:36Hey, you understand?
09:38Augie, you understand?
09:39Yeah, there's the, um, the icing, the icing.
09:43You can hear the words of trainer Pat Barry in the corner of Augie Sanchez.
09:49He wants to see Augie busier here in the second round.
09:53Didn't throw enough punches and feeling that he had taken the hardest punch
09:57that he could from Espinosa, so he shouldn't have anything to feel
10:00about his fear.
10:01Well, he took a nice left hook.
10:02I don't know that it was Espinosa's best shot, and he has to be busy.
10:05There's no way he can win this fight.
10:06He's gonna stay on the outside like that and not press him.
10:08He needs to close the gap, get inside.
10:10He needs to be effective and land, especially a guy that's 10 years older than him.
10:14Let's see what he has left in his gas tank.
10:16Barry, who is Augie Sanchez's father-in-law, took over from Augie's father, Juan,
10:22who unfortunately passed away a little over a year ago.
10:25Pat Barry, also a juvenile detective here in Las Vegas.
10:29See, from the range they're at now, this is where Sanchez can't really stay
10:34and be effective.
10:35He's not gonna reach very effectively with his power shots.
10:37He's gonna have to leap in.
10:38He needs to shut that down and get inside.
10:40Whether he slips or blocks it, he has to move in.
10:42Sanchez with the gold glitter.
10:47Espinosa in the silver.
10:49While Sanchez's big weapon has been the left hook, the right hand did have
10:54major impact with Hamed, even though he lost.
10:57He dropped Hamed with a double straight right in the second, but that was ruled a slip.
11:02It looked clean from here, but he later rocked Hamed with a big left hook, his signature punch.
11:07Right now his left hook hasn't been a factor at all.
11:10The best punches he has landed was the right hand, but he's not throwing enough.
11:14If you only throw five punches, you land it on five, it's five.
11:18If you throw 30 and land half, you still got triple, which you landed with the five.
11:21And that's precisely what Pat Barry wanted out of him.
11:24There was a double-triple left hook that missed by Auggie Sanchez.
11:29Slow pace here, nearing the end of round two, less than a minute.
11:50I asked Sanchez what happened in his first loss in 98 after winning his first 16.
11:54He got knocked out in the first play a journeyman named Edgar Garcia.
11:58Sanchez simply said he got lazy and took Garcia for granted.
12:01And on top of that, he didn't see the punch that hit him.
12:04And sometimes when you don't see him, your mind doesn't have a chance to brace your body for the impact,
12:08and he just lights out.
12:09And then he reeled off 10 straight before the loss to Javier,
12:13trying to bounce back from that loss here tonight against the veteran,
12:17two-time world champion Luisito Espinoza.
12:23Good counterpunching by Sanchez after the wild missing by Espinoza,
12:27Espinoza just walked into a right uppercut.
12:30Nice combination here by Sanchez and all those punches had good power in there.
12:33So a good finish to round two for the Las Vegas native, Auggie Sanchez.
12:39Well, it's a family affair here in Las Vegas.
12:49There is the wife of Auggie Sanchez, Dawn, celebrating her 21st birthday today and hopes that her husband provides her with a 50 birthday present with a W.
13:04He talked about the good power that Sanchez does have.
13:20Here he closes in on Espinoza and gets that gap shut down, makes a miss.
13:25That shot was grazing, but that right uppercut was very, very solid.
13:28Hook, again, not real big, but he's slipping nice on the inside there,
13:31making Espinoza miss and making him pay more importantly.
13:34Espinoza won the WBA Bantamweight belt in 89, a first-round knockout over Pauk-4 Connexie,
13:44two successful defenses, lost it to Israel Contreras in his home base of Manila.
13:52Then fight for a title again until 95 when he won the WBC featherweight crown over Manuel Medina with a decision,
13:59seven successful title defenses, and then he lost the belt to Cesar Soto in a revamp.
14:05Ho! Ho!
14:06Ho!
14:07Come on, keep him up, keep him up.
14:08That's referee Joe Cortez telling Espinoza to keep him up.
14:17Espinoza's been down seven times in his career, 54 professional fights, 45-9, 24 knockouts,
14:23but as mentioned, he's lost two of his last three fights to Cesar Soto and Gute Espadas.
14:30And he'll be the first one to tell you, he said, I don't think that he can hurt me, meaning Sanchez,
14:35I'll go right at him to destroy him, and he's not doing it now,
14:38so he must have some respect for the power he's felt in the first couple of rounds.
14:41Sanchez, 23 of his 26 wins by knockout, so he does have some pop.
14:47Rated number nine by the IBF at 126.
14:52Espinoza number three by the WBC.
14:55Still a bit of a chess match here.
14:59On the inside, obviously, Sanchez has the advantage.
15:02On the outside, clearly the advantage goes to Espinoza.
15:04There's been a little in and a little out.
15:06Nice body shot, nice right hand.
15:10Sanchez, Sanchez rock and look.
15:12All over Espinoza, gorgeous combination to the head.
15:16Espinoza shows all right, bring it on, Augie.
15:18And there's a right hand to the head and a couple of lefts.
15:22Beautiful hooks by Sanchez to Espinoza's head.
15:25He heard Espinoza, I saw his left leg actually quiver.
15:28He almost dropped him with that right hand.
15:32Sanchez dominated here in round three.
15:35And you can hear the crowd chanting in unison
15:37for their hometown favorite, Augie.
15:44Sanchez does have potent punching power.
15:47Oh, down goes Espinoza.
15:52Four, five, six, seven, eight.
15:57The punch before the one that dropped him was the one that hurt him,
16:01and the other one was just sort of a coup de grace,
16:03finish him off a little bit.
16:04Just for good measure.
16:06Down at 2 or 5 of round three.
16:09Now, looking to survive the final 32 seconds as Espinoza.
16:15Sanchez trying to finish it here.
16:19Sanchez just taking his time to his not rushing,
16:21using very measured punches, not wasting much at all.
16:29Sanchez, bouncing back from that loss to Prince Nassim.
16:33Where he actually put forth a pretty solid showing despite the loss.
16:38And looking very sharp here.
16:40It's a beautiful straight right to the hip.
16:42It hasn't been the left hook.
16:43It's been the right hand.
16:44Here it is again.
16:46Tremendous run for Sanchez.
16:48The wife of Luisito Espinoza, Marie Sherry, very concerned.
17:07Okay, Louie, how do you feel here?
17:08Feeling good?
17:09You feel all right?
17:10Okay, Galia, I'm here to protect you.
17:12Why don't you start taking any unnecessary punishment?
17:14You start taking more punishment like that,
17:16but you start, you understand?
17:17Okay, I'm here to protect you, buddy.
17:19You're doing.
17:20You're getting too wide, man.
17:21Too wide.
17:22Get tight, get tight.
17:23Keep your shots down the middle.
17:25Watch that right hand.
17:26Augie Sanchez throws.
17:27It hurts him.
17:28Now he's close to the body there,
17:29but there's a nice short right hand up top
17:30and a second one to the ear.
17:32And he comes back with another right hand.
17:34You see him hesitate.
17:36It's sort of a delayed reflect,
17:37and that right hand sends him to the canvas.
17:40He had a nice right hand before that sequence.
17:42It hurt him, but that one made him come.
17:47So now we begin round four.
17:52Espinosa tasting the canvas in round three.
18:00Sanchez doing a neat job of blocking a lot of those punches
18:02and also bobbing and weaving,
18:04being very elusive defensively,
18:06making Espinosa miss.
18:08The right hand is getting home time and time again.
18:13Lead right hands, jab right hands,
18:15overhand rights, counter rights.
18:17Augie's best weapon tonight is not his left hook.
18:20And as we mentioned earlier,
18:22against Ahmed, even though he lost,
18:24his right hand was effective.
18:25Oh, gorgeous right uppercut on the jaw of Espinosa.
18:29That was a beautiful sequence with that right uppercut.
18:34He slipped the punch, stepped over,
18:36and brought the right hand up underneath.
18:38That's how you draw it up on the books.
18:40Textbook counter punch. That was beautiful.
18:43The right hand by Espinosa that got through,
18:45but it didn't seem to face Sanchez that much.
18:48Espinosa needs to step more with that jab
18:53and get audio off-balance.
18:54If he lets him sit on his,
18:55just sit there flat-footed like that,
18:56he's not a problem.
18:57The quickness of Sanchez defensively
18:58has not allowed Espinosa
18:59to land too many clean punches.
19:01And now, Augie Sanchez digging to the ribs.
19:03Oh, beautiful combination to the head.
19:05Espinosa's in trouble.
19:06He's all over Espinosa.
19:08Espinosa tasting a lot of it.
19:10He's all over Espinosa.
19:12Espinosa tasting a lot of it.
19:13He's all over Espinosa.
19:15It's all over Espinosa.
19:16Espinosa tasting a lot of leather here.
19:18And I think he wants to quit.
19:20It's all over.
19:21Sanchez wins.
19:24Don Sanchez can celebrate.
19:29A nice birthday present for Don.
19:34Gift-wrapped from her husband Augie,
19:39and let's just hope that Espinosa is all right.
19:41He's on the stool right now.
19:43He's a rugged old warrior,
19:46but he loses for the 10th time.
19:48Those ring years and wars will add up quickly.
19:52Trust me, I know.
19:53The skills diminish.
19:54The reflexes, the timing.
19:56They're the first to go.
20:02And in light of Sanchez's last fight,
20:04what has to be considered an upset to some people,
20:09although he was favored eight to five,
20:12some people felt that he may have been taking on too much of a risk here
20:16in the very, very polished and experienced Espinosa.
20:20But despite the big age difference,
20:23it was youth over experience.
20:25Sanchez, 10 years younger than the two-time world champ,
20:28able to prevail and gets a nice kiss from the birthday girl,
20:32Dawn, his wife, turned 21.
20:35Here's Pat Barry, Miguel Diaz,
20:37one of the top cut men and trainers in the business.
20:40And now the other side, Marie Sherry,
20:42with the look of concern on her face,
20:44the wife of Luisito Espinosa.
20:47You can tell that she's sort of ring-tested tough, too,
20:50because she's used to this.
20:51She's been with him a long time,
20:53seen him through some of these wars and losses.
20:57Now you're going to watch here.
20:58Espinosa comes in.
20:59There are a few sequences.
21:00There's a jab that goes this way.
21:01And what happens is Sanchez takes his head,
21:05slips it, and fires the uppercut underneath as we clear this.
21:08And it is textbook.
21:10It's just perfect.
21:11There's one uppercut that comes.
21:14It's the second uppercut that really, not this one,
21:17but watch this one, slip, bang.
21:18That is how you draw it up.
21:20That is how you draw it up.
21:21Make a guy miss and make him pay.
21:27Now watch the stoppage.
21:28The right hands were just getting home.
21:30I don't think Luisito Espinosa ever really picked that left hand up to block.
21:33He just sits there, then he bends over with his left hand.
21:35Look at it down.
21:36It's at his waist.
21:37And every right hand is hitting him.
21:39And Augie just turning southpaw a little bit,
21:42right hook, and every right hand just landed no matter where he threw it from.
21:46Espinosa just cowering away,
21:48and eventually the fight had to be stopped.
21:50There was the reaction when it happened by the wife of Augie Sanchez,
21:5521-year-old Don Sanchez.
21:57And she celebrates the victory.
21:59So Sanchez fighting here in his own backyard of Las Vegas with the victory.
22:04Let's get it up to Jimmy Lennon Jr.
22:06Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of one minute, 36 seconds.
22:14In round number four, a referee in charge, Joe Cortez stops the contest.
22:19The winner by way of technical knockout, Augie Kid Vegas Sanchez.
22:27And a good job by Joe Cortez, the referee to step in and protect the elder Luisito Espinosa.
22:38Good crowd on hand to help Augie's wife Dawn celebrate her birthday.
22:43As Augie ups his record to 27-2 with 24 knockouts, Espinosa drops to 45-10.
22:50He's now lost three of his last four fights and has to really consider what to do in the near future.
22:58And Sanchez feels that a win over a quality guy like Espinosa will lead to another title shot.
23:04Coming up next, our main event, it's the WBA Super Featherweight Championship.
23:09Unbeaten Joel Casamayor versus former world champion Roberto Garcia.
23:14We go into the dressing room with the champion.
23:17Casamayor fled the dictatorship of Fidel Castro to help feed his family by sending money.
23:21Also to seek a world title.
23:23Says he's not looking past the very game.
23:25Roberto Garcia with major bucks and greatness looming.
23:28Extremely dedicated under Joe Goosen after enjoying the party life of South Beach in Miami.
23:33Just after defecting, moved out to Van Nuys, California to train hard.
23:37Known for his blazing speed, but where it is, his power has improved immensely.
23:41Goosen says he'll put on a show tonight that people will not forget.
23:46We're set for post-fight reaction to Jim Gray in the ring.
23:50All right.
23:51Thank you very much, Steve.
23:52Augie, first of all, you're holding your right hand.
23:54Did you hurt your hand there in the last sequence?
23:56Yeah, those uppercuts were catching them flush.
23:59And, um...
24:00Did you break it?
24:01No, I didn't break it.
24:02It just hurt.
24:03That's all.
24:04A lot of people thought that maybe Hamed took a lot out of you after the August 19th fight
24:10when you lost that fight.
24:12In fact, it shows tonight maybe you've learned something.
24:15What did you learn specifically from that fight?
24:18Not to be so nice inside the ring.
24:20Not to be nice to my opponents and to go do what I gotta do.
24:24And after the fight, then we shake hands.
24:27Let's take a look at a couple of those uppercuts here in the final round.
24:31If our monitor comes back on, there we go.
24:33And tell us about it.
24:34Well, he was falling in every time and I knew I was gonna catch him with those.
24:40We've been working out on those in the gym and just staying focused.
24:45And here we go now as we jump to the end of the fight.
24:48I thought, as Steve Albert said, it was a great, great fight for the referee, Joe Cortez,
24:52to step in one time, this time early before he got hurt.
24:55Yeah.
24:56He was hurt pretty bad and it was a good call on Joe Cortez's part.
25:03I think maybe even the first round was enough for him.
25:07But I'm glad that he's okay and I'm gonna move on from here.
25:12What would you like to do next now?
25:14What's your path from here?
25:16Well, I mean, everyone is telling me I'll come out coming back,
25:20fighting with such a quality fighter after the Hamid fight.
25:25And in order to be the best, you gotta fight the best and that's what I'm out there to do.
25:29I wanna climb that ladder and get back up to the top.
25:33Finally, let me ask you, Augie, how much of a change has it been to go to your father-in-law, Pat,
25:38from your father who unfortunately passed away?
25:40Has that been a difficult transition the past year?
25:42Well, yeah.
25:43I mean, but I know he's, right now I know he's looking down on me.
25:47And also my grandfather-in-law, he just passed away.
25:53This actually, I didn't tell my in-laws that this was dedicated to him,
25:58but this fight was dedicated for my grandfather-in-law.
26:01All right.
26:02And your wife had a happy birthday, huh?
26:04Yeah, this is awesome.
26:05My wife's birthday present and we're gonna celebrate.
26:09And I would also like to thank America Presents Dan Guzan for giving me this opportunity to take...
26:16It's rare that people thank Dan.
26:18Just kidding.
26:19We'd like to hear what's next.
26:22All right.
26:23I get up to the top and Dan Guzan is the man to take me up there.
26:26Dan, what is next?
26:28Hey, listen.
26:29Auggie already said it best.
26:30He learned a lot in that last fight with Ahmed.
26:32And we're going for a world title fight.
26:34That's what we're going for.
26:36I think he won a lot of fans out here in Las Vegas.
26:38He's the only hometown grown fighter out here in Las Vegas.
26:42They needed someone other than Elvis.
26:44All right.
26:45Well, congratulations to you.
26:46Happy birthday to you.
26:47And let's send it back now to Steve Albert.
26:49All right.
26:50Thank you very much, Jim Gray.
26:51Let's check the online scoring results from our opening bout.
26:57And there you see it.
26:58Auggie Sanchez in control.

27:01And the judges also seem to feel the same way.
