00:00Great in that fight. Looked like he was really getting to a different level.
00:02And Josecito Lopez, he was the opponent against Victor Ortiz.
00:06You might recall that. He broke Ortiz's jaw, won the fight,
00:09went on to win a spot against Canelo Alvarez.
00:12Was stopped by Canelo, of course, but now is back down at 147 pounds.
00:16More action now here on Showtime Extreme.
00:19Let's go back to Barry and Steve. Fellas?
00:21All right, thanks very much, BK.
00:22And, of course, you were talking about the main event, Marcos Maidana and Josecito Lopez.
00:26And I think what really strikes me more than anything else about this,
00:29and Brian touched on it, is that they are fighting at the right weight.
00:32147 pounds, I think there's going to be something to be proved tonight.
00:35And, Barry, we've talked about it over and over, how hot a division this is.
00:39And one of the things that happens when a division is this hot is you get fighters, they lose fights.
00:43Maidana got beat by Devin Alexander.
00:45Josecito Lopez lost to Canelo Alvarez, a division above.
00:48So what? They're action fighters. We can't wait to see them against each other.
00:51A loss when a division is hot is not the worst thing in the world.
00:54All right, both have arrived here at the Home Depot Center.
00:57Josecito Lopez arriving just a little while ago.
01:02And he will stay, believe me, where it's cool until he absolutely has to come out here.
01:06He is in the main event against Marcos Maidana.
01:09I'm always amazed.
01:10I was amazed at his poise when he fought the first time we saw him, and he was fighting overweight.
01:15I was amazed even then when he fought Ortiz.
01:17Yes, we forget that he was fighting out of his weight class in that fight as well.
01:21And what guts in that fight. I thought he lost almost every round, but he was in the fight, and then he broke Victor Ortiz's jaw and made his career with one punch.
01:31Marcos Maidana, and you talk about one punch, well, here's a guy who can get you out of there with one punch, Marcos Maidana.
01:36And he, too, he's kind of in a renaissance in his career.
01:39Yeah, exactly right. He had a great fight with Amir Khan.
01:41We remember his fight with Devin Alexandre, who was outboxed, but he's a tremendous puncher, whether junior welterweight or welterweight.
01:49All right, it brings us to the next fight on our show, Extreme Card.
01:54It is a featherweight fight, and it is going to go four rounds tonight.
01:59It features Joseph Diaz, Jr., at just 20 years of age, against Rigoberto Casillas.
02:04And as we take a look at the tail of the tape here, Barry, the key number, the weights, because Rigoberto Casillas is making a big jump.
02:12Four fights ago, he was 109. Right now, he's 139.
02:16And Joe Diaz, of course, the 2012 Olympian, he's fought at this weight pretty much from the start of his professional career.
02:22This will be his fifth fight. He's got four victories and a couple of knockouts.
02:25And for the introduction of the fighters now, we'll take you once more to the center of the ring and Joe Martinez. Joe.
02:30Once again, ladies and gentlemen, good evening. Welcome back to Home Depot Center here in Carson, California, for Showtime Extreme,
02:39presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime, sponsored by Corona Extra, La Cerveza Más Fina, and AT&T Pienzas Sin LÃmites.
02:48The three judges presented for this contest, all hailing from California, Carla Caes, Pat Connolly, and Fritz Werner.
02:56When the bell rings, your referee in charge of the action, Dr. Lou Mourad.
03:01And here we go, fight fans, four rounds scheduled in this junior featherweight special attraction.
03:07Introducing to you first, fighting out of the red corner, wearing white trunks, trimmed in green,
03:13hailing from Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
03:17Weighing at officially 122.75 pounds, this veteran enters the ring tonight for the 20th time as a professional.
03:24Here is Rigoberto, here is Rigoberto, Blanchitas Casillas.
03:34And next is the opponent across the ring, fighting out of the blue corner.
03:38Wearing gray, trimmed in purple, he hails from South El Monte, California.
03:44Weighing at officially 122.5 pounds, this young professional brings a ring record, standing at five victories,
03:51one defeat and two knockout wins.
03:54He is a member of the 2012 USA Olympic Boxing Team.
03:59Here is Joseph Jojo Diaz Jr.
04:07Once again, referee, Dr. Lou Mourad with the final instructions.
04:10You're giving your instruction in the dressing room, shake hands, go to your corners and await the bell.
04:21Good luck.
04:26So as the shadows start to fall over the Home Depot Center, we are set to go.
04:29Our second fight of the evening here on Show Extreme.
04:31Barry Tompkins, Steve Farhood alongside.
04:33Four rounds in the featherweight division, Rigoberto, Blanchitas, Casillas against the American Olympian, Jojo Diaz.
04:41And Diaz, of course, pretty much the homegrown product from just down the road in El Monte, California.
04:48So we'll have plenty of vocal support here.
04:53Casillas falls into that category of road warrior.
04:56We use that phrase to describe Sherman Williams, and that can be said of Casillas as well.
05:02And, Barry, just to straighten out one thing right off the top about Jojo Diaz.
05:06He was a 2012 Olympian, but before the Olympics, he fought in a competition called the World Boxing Classic.
05:11He fought twice in that competition.
05:14He won one and lost one.
05:15And after that competition, the Fight Facts people and the ABC, the American Boxing Commissions, ruled that those fights were professional fights.
05:25So, as a result, Diaz is 5-1, not 4-0.
05:30Those fights are considered professional fights, as I think they should be, because they were fought without headgear.
05:34The fighters were paid, and they fought with professional-sized gloves.
05:38And it is a debate, and the debate still continues to rage.
05:41And I'm sure, ultimately, there will be a definitive answer.
05:46You see Jojo Diaz, a lefty.
05:49Casillas, two of his last six fights were against lefties, so it shouldn't be a problem.
05:53But Diaz, a good body puncher and a very good counter-puncher.
05:58Casillas is running into trouble and being stopped.
06:00In his ten losses, six of them have come by way of stoppage.
06:06And those stoppages barry against much smaller opponents than Jojo Diaz.
06:11And a good right hand right there.
06:14And a combination, left of the body, right to the head, and then an uppercut.
06:20Diaz pretty much scoring at will right now against Casillas.
06:23And you see why Casillas is a perfect opponent for a young, heavily-hyped Olympian like Diaz,
06:31because even as he's getting hit, getting picked apart, actually,
06:34he's still coming forward, right into the punching range of Jojo Diaz.
06:38So Jojo is going to have a lot of offensive success here, I believe.
06:41And Casillas got there with the right hand, but an answer from Diaz with the right of his own.
06:51There's a left and another left by Diaz.
06:54This is where Casillas wants to be, if he's going to be able to do any business,
07:04but taking more than he's giving here.
07:07Well, Casillas is 139 pounds right now, and again, he was a 109 four fights ago, at least at the scales.
07:19You have to question whether he over-hydrated.
07:23Jojo Diaz looks a lot more comfortable at the weight.
07:25Yeah, no question about it.
07:30He has respect, responsible defensively, keeps his gloves up.
07:35Yeah, he's a stylist.
07:36It's nice to be seeing how much of a banger he's going to be,
07:39and still very much a work in progress.
07:41Tempo!
07:42End of the first round.
07:53You want to start picking on front a little bit more into anything, all right?
07:56Stay in there.
07:56Yeah, stay in there, work the body a little bit more, create triangles,
07:59and then go back up on top, all right?
08:02Don't stay in front of him, but don't give him too much space in there either, okay?
08:05Take those two grips.
08:06Take those two grips.
08:08And work two and three now.
08:09Work two and three together, okay?
08:13Okay.
08:14Close your eyes real quick.
08:21Let him get a little closer.
08:22And we've got to keep moving.
08:24And we've got to keep moving, lateral movements.
08:27That's the one you have to use.
08:29Throw your right hand, but strong.
08:32And keep going on this side.
08:36Stay back.
08:39This is round two of this four-round fight.
08:46JJ Diaz, Rigoberto Casillas.
08:51Casillas ducking right into the left hand from Diaz.
08:58They want Diaz to throw more combinations.
09:02There's a good right hand.
09:04Here are the numbers as we see the power punches from last round, Steve.
09:11Yeah, very, very wide for Diaz.
09:14He's been very accurate.
09:16And one of the reasons he's been accurate is Casillas is right in front of him, walking to him at all times.
09:20He's always in range.
09:21And Casillas is doing a lot of leading.
09:22He's a good right hand, but from the side by Casillas.
09:26Maybe his best punch so far.
09:30Casillas also seems to kind of lean forward a little bit.
09:33Maybe we'll look for some left uppercuts.
09:40Casillas is doing a good job of mixing his attack.
09:42He's using his right hook, using his jab, and he's punching downstairs as well.
09:46And Casillas is right there for him.
09:51Does keep coming forward, and he tries, but very vulnerable.
09:55Yeah, he's a little slow, and he's very wide with his shots.
09:59Diaz has a lot of poise for him.
10:00He's 20 years old, and when he was in the Olympics, he was 19, and he did win one fight,
10:05then lost to a Cuban who he had previously beaten.
10:07So he didn't meddle.
10:11Nice combination there.
10:12Left hand and right behind it.
10:14Missed with the uppercut.
10:15Comes right back with the left hand.
10:19Got there with an uppercut.
10:20A little bit short, though.
10:22Good body shot.
10:25Very good round for Diaz.
10:27And a good right hand by Casillas.
10:29So he's not going anywhere quite yet.
10:32Double left hand by Diaz.
10:34Gets Casillas going backwards.
10:35And now, Diaz opening up.
10:39Two left hands and then a right uppercut.
10:44And a good shot to the body.
10:45Casillas keeps coming forward.
10:49You know, Casillas looked like he was on his way out.
10:52His game.
10:54Diaz's problem right now is he's hitting a junior welterweight.
10:56He's hitting a 140-pound fighter.
10:58He's signed up to fight a junior featherweight.
11:02And that's why Casillas is still here,
11:03despite taking dozens of clean shots to the chin.
11:19When you're a young fighter like Diaz, Barry,
11:21I think some of the matches you take,
11:23they're meant to make you look good.
11:24Others are made to make you learn.
11:26This is one of those, I think, made for him to look good.
11:30Uh-huh.
11:30Because of the style of the opponent.
11:32And that builds confidence.
11:33Absolutely.
11:34And all of that said, Casillas is still here.
11:37Yes.
11:37Yes.
11:37Yes.
11:38Yes.
11:38Yes.
11:38Yes.
11:39Yes.
11:39Yes.
11:39Yes.
11:40Yes.
11:40Yes.
11:40Yes.
11:41Yes.
11:42Yes.
11:43Yes.
11:44Yes.
11:45Yes.
11:46Yes.
11:47Yes.
11:48Yes.
11:49Yes.
11:50Yes.
11:51Yes.
11:52Yes.
11:53Yes.
11:54He has a jab to the forehead and for the first time in round two,
11:59Casillas went backward.
12:02Mixing up his shots well.
12:04Body punch, right hook, left hand.
12:06I think that left uppercut is going to be there for Diaz if he wants to take it.
12:08And speaking of featherweights, here's a guy that we've seen right in this very arena.
12:21As a matter of fact, Daniel Ponce de Leon, former WBC weatherweight champion of the world.
12:26Recently lost to Abner Morris.
12:28Stopped in the ninth round.
12:29That was back at the MGM Grand in May on the Mayweather Guerrero card.
12:34Ponce de Leon, consistently entertaining fighter, and it's good that Maris won that featherweight title,
12:41beating a fighter as good as Ponce de Leon.
12:43Absolutely.
12:44Makes it worthy.
12:46This is round three of a fight that is now scheduled for four.
12:48This was a swing.
12:49It could have been four.
12:50It could have been six.
12:51It is a four-round fight.
12:52You can see it looks a little hesitant to pull the trigger right now.
13:10He's been countered silly in this fight.
13:12Yeah.
13:16Two body shots, and he missed with the left hand, missed with the right, missed with two more lefts.
13:20Only criticism I can make of Diaz, and I have to really reach to make one, is that, yeah,
13:26he keeps his gloves up, but that's his only form of defense.
13:28I'd like to see him move his head a little bit more.
13:30Slip punches.
13:33This fight, he can do virtually whatever he wants.
13:35That left hand forced Casillas back for a moment.
13:38Look, Diaz is getting resistance, Barry.
13:50You pointed that out, that Casillas is still here.
13:52You wouldn't have thought he would be at this point in the fight.
13:58Yeah, and he only took a backward step once or twice in this fight.
14:01Take a look at the power numbers just in this round, Steve.
14:10And that's a running total, Diaz, with a very, very high percentage, almost 60%.
14:14That'll win you a few fights, almost 70%.
14:17Yeah.
14:20Casillas almost went down there.
14:22Yeah, he did, and I didn't really see a punch there.
14:25He looks wobbly.
14:26Another good left hand, and another good left hand by Diaz.
14:33Three left hands, and no answer from Casillas.
14:36This is good matchmaking, because, again, this is Jojo Diaz's seventh pro fight.
14:41And he's in with a guy that, for all intents and purposes,
14:44should have been out of here by now.
14:45And I don't really blame Diaz for the fact that Casillas isn't out of there.
14:48And now he's on the left hand.
14:50Now he does go backward, and he is in trouble right now.
14:52Trying to hold on.
14:53Diaz doesn't allow it.
14:54Digs the left hand of the body.
14:59And Casillas still throwing punches.
15:00Another left hand of the body by Diaz.
15:04Left hand to the chin that time.
15:06Just missed with that uppercut.
15:1130 seconds remaining here in round three.
15:13Casillas still there, still throwing punches.
15:16He's tough for a guy who's a natural flyweight.
15:18This is a pretty amazing performance.
15:21Just in the fact that he's still here, taking all those shots.
15:27He looks exhausted.
15:28Yeah, he does.
15:28Absolutely exhausted.
15:30He does.
15:32One second.
15:33It was a good combination by Diaz and no answer for Casillas.
15:42And a good right hand at the bell.
15:44He's tough for a guy.
15:44He's tough for a guy.
15:46He's tough for a guy.
15:50He's tough for a guy.
15:50He's tough for a guy.
15:51Well, we're going to stop this fight?
15:53No, no.
15:53I don't want to stop it.
15:56You want us to stop the fight?
15:58No, no, no.
15:58I'm good.
15:59I'm good.
15:59I'm good.
16:00We're fighting out of our division.
16:02Let's stop this fight.
16:04No, no.
16:04I want to keep going.
16:06If you don't do anything in this round, we're going to stop the fight.
16:10okay they're gonna knock you down okay we're gonna let you go out this round but if you get knocked
16:16out it's your fault okay i want to fight i want to continue fighting phoenix de jesus our spanish
16:24translator but referee is going to step in and stop the fight pat russell saying or it wasn't
16:29pat russell a bigger partner but the referee saying that's enough no reason for casillas to
16:34take any more punishment yeah good decision dr lou moret i think he saw the confusion in the corner
16:43and this is some of the punishment that led to the stoppage i applaud this there is absolutely
16:48no reason for casillas to go out for a fourth round there would have been nothing different
16:54he's not moving he's not slipping shots and he took an awful lot of punishment in that third round
16:59there's a brutal brutal defeat because every round he took a lot of heavy punches yeah it kept
17:12coming forward and uh i suppose you can admire that but it's also a good way for fighter to get hurt i
17:17think i agree with you absolutely well stopped here the final number steve well total punches 54 68 of his
17:25power shots for jojo diaz that's a tremendous number you will almost never see a higher percentage
17:32without a fighter getting a stoppage all right so diaz the lopsided winner here on the stoppage let's
17:38go to joe martinez to make it official joe ladies and gentlemen after three rounds referee dr lou moret
17:45puts a halt to the contest declaring your winner by tko victory joseph jojo diaz jr
17:55so joseph diaz uh runs his record depending on which one you look at to either five and oh
18:02or two what would be six and one one yeah so the bottom line is he's a winner he wins in easy fashion
18:07tonight over an outmatched rigoberto casillas we'll take you right back up top side to our host brian
18:13kenny brad and barry and steve uh you know i echo what you're saying jojo diaz just looked terrific
18:18and an outstanding decision by the judge there by the referee rather in stopping that fight right then
18:24in there we've seen enough and diaz just looks tremendous at the age of 20. more fights coming
18:28up here on showtime extreme and then of course later on showtime itself three big fights marcos
18:33maidana and josecito lopez in the main event two weeks from now saturday june 22nd on showtime
18:39an outstanding matchup our own paulie malignaggi
