Welcome back to From the South.
00:07
In Brazil, as COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference moves into its fifth day,
00:13
the tension between advocates of green capitalism and eco-socialism is rising.
00:18
Our reporter Brian Mir with more details.
00:22
COP30, the UN Climate Change Conference, has been going on for five days now.
00:27
And there's a tension bubbling under the surface between advocates of green capitalism
00:33
and advocates of eco-socialism, two different paths towards resolving the climate change crisis.
00:41
One, eco-capitalism, or green capitalism, involves market-based solutions
00:47
with the involvement of the same corporations who are most responsible for degrading the environment
00:53
and raising the Earth's temperature, including the petroleum multinationals,
00:58
who believe that there's a way to profit off of adaptation to climate change.
01:03
On the other side, in the People's Summit, which is happening at the Federal University of Pará,
01:09
on the other side of Belén, 30,000 members of social movements, indigenous nations,
01:14
and riverine communities from all over Latin America and all over the world
01:18
are participating in an assembly today in which they're going to create a list of demands
01:23
to advance the cause of eco-socialism, which believes that the only effective way
01:28
to save the world's environment is through structural transformation of economies,
01:34
eliminating capitalism, and creating a new system that involves long-term planning
01:40
for the benefit of all members of society and the environment, especially the most poor.
01:45
Now, we see that here at COP30, there's different booths set up from companies and foundations
01:53
that are financed even by petroleum companies, and they're advocating for things like advancing
02:00
the carbon credit market, which is essentially a way of outsourcing pollution by the most polluting
02:06
companies in the global north to the developing world.
02:11
So today at the assembly, in the People's Summit, they're going to create a list of demands,
02:15
that they're going to present to the organizers of COP30 tomorrow, and President Lula has also
02:22
said he'll be there.
02:23
So it'll be interesting to see how that is viewed by the United Nations.
