Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent — are its cities ready for climate change?

Despite climate change being a top priority for most mayors in 54 cities, nearly one-fifth of the cities don't have a dedicated team for climate adaptation.

00:00Are European cities prepared for climate change?
00:08Heatwaves, floods and droughts are the top three most pressing urban climate risks.
00:13More than 75% of Europeans live in urban centers, putting them on the front line of the fight against climate change.
00:21This is according to a recent EuroCities survey that analyzed 54 cities across 17 European countries.
00:2980% of the cities surveyed said that they have developed or are developing an emergency response plan related to climate.
00:37Meanwhile, 78% of cities have or are developing an early warning system to notify residents of climate threats.
00:46When it comes to buildings, 81% of cities have or are developing building regulations for new developments focused on resilience,
00:53while 56% of the cities conduct regular climate risks assessments every two to three years.
01:01However, 13% do not restrict developments in flood-prone areas.
01:06Despite 61% of the European cities having up to 10 staff members dedicated to climate adoption,
01:12a lack of funding, a limited number of staff and a lack of coordination between agencies are the main challenges to improving emergency planning.
01:20Municipal revenue and EU funding are the most accessed sources of traditional financing for adaptation in cities.
