00:00and welcome back to accuweather early thanks for watching on this friday morning all right we know
00:09someone loves this time of year lincoln riddle because it is ski season and accuweather ski
00:15season forecast is out in a few people no one's more excited than accuweather producer lincoln
00:21riddle by the way he is a wildcat the university of kentucky super fan and the author of the blog
00:29never quit skiing what an intro all right he is back with us to talk all things skiing you can
00:35see the christmas tree in the background uh and we're going to be talking about how to make the
00:39most of the season ahead lincoln thanks for being with us you know every year is different is this
00:44shaping up to be a start early fade fast kind of winter are you expecting better longevity on the
00:51slopes oh my god i sound so cool well first off bernie and ariella i am a university kentucky
00:57super fan go cats but yes this season is shaping up to certainly be another interesting one like you
01:04said every year is different november 1st rolled in and here in the east you know northern new york
01:11northern new england we really started to see some significant amounts of natural snow
01:16temperatures kicked in they were able to make a lot of snow so this week we saw several resorts open a
01:21couple more are opening up this weekend like white face mountain opens tomorrow killington uh in
01:26vermont sunday river in maine they opened on wednesday so ski season's here and it's already
01:32getting off to a good start accu weather ski season forecast which like you said came out earlier this
01:36week it's calling for a bookend winter so december strong start possibly a strong finish there in
01:42february giving us a good setup for march so hoping for the best all right what should skiers be doing
01:48now to prepare for the season ahead both on and off the mountain and what's something skiers tend to
01:53forget before that first trip of the year yeah ski season's here but a lot of resorts still aren't
02:00open and they're going to continue to come online you know over the next few weeks and as we head into
02:05december so there's still plenty of time to get ready for the season i recommend pulling your gear out
02:10now taking stock of what you have what you need myself i actually need gloves i'm skiing tomorrow for the
02:15first day of the season i still don't have gloves so it's something i'm going to take care of
02:18this afternoon but look over everything you have check your gear check your skis check the bindings
02:24and then get them in the shop it's a good time to get them tuned right at the start of the season get
02:28them waxed that way on day one when you go to the mountain everything's good to go and you can just
02:32focus on the one thing that matters getting out on the snow now weather can change fast in the
02:37mountains what should skiers look for in the forecast before deciding heading out beyond just snow
02:43totals well weather is basically the most important factor and how good or bad a ski day is
02:49it can absolutely wreck a ski day the mountain can basically completely shut down in some instances
02:54or it can be epic with a big powder day right so we can talk at length about all the things you could
03:00do but to keep it simple i recommend focusing on precipitation timing and wind because those three
03:08things they work together um and you know you may look and say oh it's snow to foot but if there's
03:13going to be a transition to rain later in the morning things could get sloppy in the afternoon
03:17or perhaps you know the morning starts off clear and then you're going to get snow later in the day so
03:23those things you want to focus on and and wind speed is so important you know wind can ruin the ski
03:29day uh all lifts can close if if winds are too fast so uh wind speed is probably the single most
03:36big factor that i focus on when i'm looking to go ski for a day and kind of what to expect and
03:42it's wind is a weird thing not every lift is necessarily going to be impacted maybe on one
03:47peak at the resort the gondola is impacted but the main peak the summit quads not so um really pay
03:53attention to those things and try and gather as much information as you can from as many sources
03:58as you can and of course the accurate app has all of those features you were just talking about you
04:02can type in the exact location of where you're skiing and get the wind get the precipitation get the
04:06timing uh lincoln you are known for trying to ski as many days as possible what's your personal goal
04:14this year well i love skiing and i'm a fanatic it's all i want to do all the time ski season for me
04:23ended last may i there's not a day that's gone by that i haven't thought about it i've been dreaming
04:27about it so you know when this time of year rolls around the excitement is very high and i set my goal
04:34regularly at 100 ski days i ski basically every day i i'm fortunate to work 4 a.m to noon so after
04:40work i get to go to the mountain and then go ski and then on the weekends i get full days in so
04:45100 days is the goal i hit it two years ago 136 days um and then this past season i got hurt and i
04:52missed a significant chunk of the season but i still managed to get more than 80 days so i'm hoping
04:56to return to form um and you know we'll see last year i got really close to having a perfect month
05:02in january i skied uh 30 of 31 days so maybe this year something like that's in the cards as well
05:08we'll see accuweather producer lincoln riddle the pride of lexington kentucky thanks for joining us
05:16here on accuweather early and happy skiing thank you
