AccuWeather's spring forecast is out! Lincoln Riddle spoke with our long-range experts to find out what this spring will be like in the United States.

00:00Many may be wondering when will winter end?

00:03Accu of the long-range expert Paul Pastelok says the transition to spring

00:07will vary around the country with northern areas set to experience a

00:11lingering winter. The southeast and southwest could see a quick transition.

00:15Conditions are very dry. They've missed out on a lot of opportunities for

00:19precipitation during the course of this winter season. Dry ground heats up faster

00:23and that area of the country looks like from everything we've seen, the research

00:27and the modeling that could end up being an area that will transition

00:31quickly to spring. Weak La Nina conditions could be present this spring

00:35keeping moisture away from the southwest, contributing to the potential for an

00:39early spring. La Nina is a weather pattern caused by cooler than normal

00:43ocean temperatures in the Pacific, which can cause a more northern storm track in

00:48North America. Weak La Nina conditions could have an effect keeping the jet

00:52stream sluggish from retreating into Canada. That can also have an effect on

00:56severe weather and some cooldowns that can come in from time to time throughout

00:59the season. For much of the country, temperatures are forecast to run above

01:03the historical average this spring. In northern areas like the Northwest, Great

01:07Lakes, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, temperatures are forecast to be average

01:12to slightly below average. In recent years, winter storms have made their way

01:16into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast in March. Pastelok says it's possible this

01:21year, but timing could be an issue. We may have a problem in March getting the

01:25cold to link up when precipitation comes up. May not be a lot of snow events,

01:28but there can be some. Pastelok says the flood risk will be greatest this spring

01:34in an area of the country centered around the north-central U.S. and

01:37portions of the southeast. Snow melt combined with an area of the country

01:42that we think we're going to get precipitation quite frequently during

01:46the course of the spring, that combined can cause some flooding. Drought will

01:50continue to be an issue in several regions of the country, especially in the

01:54northern plains and the southwest, where the wildfire risk will be heightened.
