00:00The idea that the indigenous people are the steadwards of the environment has become more and more popular at environmental events like COP30 currently underway in Belém.
00:10Our correspondent Brian Meir takes a look at what the concept really entails.
00:15During recent decades, the idea that indigenous people can play a fundamental role in preserving the environment has become more and more popular in the environmentalist community and in international conferences and summits like COP30, which is currently underway in Belém.
00:33It may sound nice, but what does it really mean?
00:35Indigenous people live their lives in harmony with nature instead of destroying it.
00:46Because for us, indigenous land is a bounty.
00:50It's there that we hunt and fish and grow food.
00:52At the same time, it is a sacred temple because it provides us with the medicinal and spiritual plants that we need.
00:59Around 13% of Brazil's territory is comprised of indigenous reserves, a percentage that has been steadily climbing since the return to democracy in 1989.
01:13But indigenous leaders are fighting to get millions more additional hectares of their traditional lands returned to them.
01:20If nations like Brazil are truly concerned about protecting the environment, they argue, they should turn more land over to the people who know how to take care of it.
01:29Legalizing indigenous reserves allows us to perform the role of guardians of planet Earth.
01:36Indigenous people can only start performing this role if the legal ownership of their lands is established.
01:43The state has its responsibilities, but we are offering to be partners through sharing effective practices that can help the environment.
01:50For the most part, it has unexisting reserves where nature is best preserved.
01:55At COP30, thousands of indigenous leaders are fighting to transform the concept of stewards of the environment from empty rhetoric to a practical reality.
02:06Tell us, Sir Beleng.
