00:00In Cuba, the Patriarch Colloquium continues this Friday on its second day.
00:04Participants from various countries gather to discuss communication not only as a technology,
00:08but also as a political, cultural and ethical field in the global debate from the Global
00:13South.
00:14Our correspondent Belén de los Santos tells us more.
00:19Hello, studios.
00:20Once again, we continue here in the Patriarch Colloquium, the second day of exchange, of
00:25debate, of discussing the cooperation strategies of the media world.
00:30A lot is going on here as the delegates from all over the world, particularly the Global
00:36South, are coming to the table not only to share their initiatives and media proposals,
00:42but also to exchange experiences about specific context of what is going on in Latin America,
00:49in the Middle East, how every delegate and every media outlet is tackling this challenging
00:55world.
00:55We are here joined now by Jose Luis Granados, he's a Mexican journalist.
01:00Thank you so much for being here with us.
01:02What are you taking out of this experience of the Patriarch Colloquium?
01:06Well, I would say the first thing, the importance of being here in this moment in Cuba.
01:10We've now seen the fifth colloquium here, Patriarch, coming together, people from all over Latin America,
01:16but even beyond.
01:17But in this moment when Cuba is facing what could possibly be an imminent attack from the United
01:23States on top of decades-long blockade.
01:26Never is there a more important time for right now for communicators, for journalists from
01:30throughout the world to be here in solidarity with Cuba, talking with Cubans.
01:35One of the things that I'm going to take back with me to Mexico is the commitment, the creative
01:40resistance of the Cuban people and how much they can learn from this experience as well.
01:44It's been incredible to hear experiences from all over the region, but one of the more interesting
01:48presentations that we heard was somebody who was detailing the communication strategy
01:52of Iran, who has been also facing a U.S. attack, and doing so in a really creative way, and
01:58understanding the importance of communication.
02:00It cannot be left as a secondary consideration in these times.
02:04Communication is key to confront the imperialist strategy of domination.
02:09And I think in Latin America, in some ways, we had taken second stage to the aggressions
02:14of the United States, but we know the national security strategy document shows that they
02:19have every intention of attacking us once again.
02:22And it's not just the countries like Venezuela, Cuba, but also Colombia, Mexico.
02:27This is an all-out assault.
02:29One of the things that I have been putting forward, one of the hypotheses that I have put forward,
02:33is that the United States is interested in a strategic retreat.
02:36But when forces like the United States, when imperialism retreats, it does so by punching,
02:41like a boxer, right?
02:42So this is a dangerous moment, which is why it's so important for us to be able to compare
02:46strategies to learn, and also understand how repression works.
02:50We also heard the case of Alondra, a Cuban woman who had lived basically her entire life
02:55in Ecuador, expelled, given five days to leave, telling the detailing of that experience.
03:00But it gives us an idea of how these governments that are at the service of U.S. imperialism, like
03:06Daniel Novo in Ecuador, are using the apparatus of the state to go after communicators, and how
03:11we also have to figure out how to continue to do this work, which is indispensable.
03:16Thank you so much, Jose Luis.
03:18So we were saying, from Venezuela to Cuba to Iran, the idea of coming together and understanding
03:24what is happening, sharing those experiences, understanding that there is a common attack
03:29against the global south, and also the possibility of uniting for a common strategy, in this case,
03:35in the communication world.
03:37For now, I go back to you.
