00:00Two female students of the Separia East Secondary School have been charged with assault
00:06after a violent attack against another schoolmate. They are among at least 14 students to appear
00:12before the courts in Trinidad. We have approximately about 14 students that has been charged for
00:20various offenses coming out of the school-oriented policing initiative. Nevertheless, we are
00:29constantly looking at how we can address this situation so that at least, you know, we can be
00:36more of a supportive role where we're able to deal with the behavior of these students so that we can
00:42see an improvement in the attitude of our students as we go through the school year. While many of
00:48the students face assault charges, the TTBS confirms that the charges are wide-ranging. Assault, we are
00:56seeing possession of weapons. We are also seeing where persons with possession of marijuana and
01:04the possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, etc. Also fighting as well. So
01:10these are things that we are looking at how we can address these situations. And again, what we are
01:16doing is really trying to use that intelligence-led approach where we are recording the schools, the
01:24times when these things are happening, and the persons, so that where we find persons who are regular
01:31offenders, we want to see how we can address those individuals. I've seen where an individual or
01:38or two has been charged for robberies, and that robbery, I think that is something that we are looking into.
01:47None of the incidents involved the use of firearms. The DCP says, despite these cases,
01:53the incidence of schooling discipline and violence has decreased since the installation of police officers
02:00at schools. Some dissipation of those fights compared to last year. That being said, I think that we need to
02:08look at, you know, really and truly whether or not we are dealing with the symptoms as much as if we are
02:14dealing with the cause. And therefore, the Toronto Police Service is not just about trying to stop the
02:21fight, but to really see that we deal with the very core of the problem. And therefore, we want to deal
02:26with the, you know, the behavior of these students, so that we are doing what we call an intelligence-led
02:33approach, where we are taking the statistics. We are applying the statistics to see exactly who are the,
02:41what we want to call the regular offenders. And therefore, we are going to be seeing what
02:47interventions might be necessary in order that we can help solve these problems, because the aim is
02:52ready to get these persons back on track so that they can be productive citizens of Toronto.
02:57We are going to be here.
