00:00Now for some more news coming out of this evening's post-Cabinet media briefing.
00:03Prime Minister Kamala Passat-Bissasa referred to the brutal and filmed attack of a Form 5 student
00:09of the Southeast Port of Spain Secondary School, saying stringent measures will be enforced.
00:16I will speak to the minister after we get a full report.
00:20I think everybody's fed up with a daily dose of school violence.
00:24You send your children to school and you want them to be safe.
00:27I think everyone is fed up with violence taking place in our schools.
00:32Going forward, we will treat every occurrence of assault or battery as an expelable offense in schools
00:41and an arrestable offense to put before the courts.
00:46I want parents and students to listen very carefully.
00:49If your child batters another child in assaults or batters another child in school,
00:55they will be expelled and will face the fulbrunt of the law.
01:00They will be arrested.
01:01We are committed to finding spaces where the students can be counseled and nurtured.
01:07If someone is 15 years old, if that person robs you or assaults you or extorts you, they are arrested.
01:16However, if they do the same thing in their school uniform, they are getting a free pass.
01:23It doesn't make sense that the school uniform is a license to break the law.
01:28This must stop.
01:31All acts of school violence must now be referred to the police for criminal prosecutions.
01:36Parents need to take responsibility for their children's behavior.
01:42And if they can't train them to properly behave in school, then let them stay home.
01:47And then we will have to look for spaces, as I said, to properly nurture them and counsel them
01:52and to help them to live in a manageable way.
01:56The Prime Minister adds that those filming, egging on and encouraging the acts will be suspended.
