00:0026 one and one with 16 knockouts Flores drops to 17 and three Bobby let's draw it up all right
00:10you're gonna take a look now chop chop court talks about sitting on his punches this right leg over
00:13here he's gonna turn as it comes around here he's gonna bend it gonna bend his body he's gonna take
00:18the right hand from here straight up to the jaw of Flores and you watch him bend and sit on that
00:23punch it is a beautiful piece of work here it comes bends the leg bends the right leg comes right
00:33up uses the leverage he sat on that punch beautifully as we saw him do with other punches
00:39and Flores paid for his good hard work well he told us that he changed his style since beating
00:44inner Julio for the USBA title some people perhaps a bit surprised to this extent I don't think anyone
00:52really expected this to come down to a one-round blowout so one-sided coming off a great performance
00:58Flores had with Mitchell and the fact that you know this gentleman just doesn't have chopped up
01:03have a reputation being a one-punch knockout artist not like that and after what we just saw I'm glad
01:08we got that exciting chop chop story in early we wouldn't have had time unbelievable up next from
01:12Las Vegas Tapia versus Soto while he's been fighting all his life Johnny Tapia has been boxing for 25 years
01:19tonight Tapia tries for his 50th victory as a professional for one of boxing's most emotional
01:24performers the highs have been wonderfully high the lows depressingly low Mi Vita Loca indeed
01:31all three in favor of the winner Johnny Mi Vita Loca Tapia it was the biggest moment of his career
01:46for with this victory over the highly touted Danny Romero Johnny Tapia entered the ranks of boxing's
01:52most respected fighters it was a blessing of all blessings knowing that I got the victorious win
01:57we're both in the same town two champions coming out of the same town and thought that he can take me in
02:03there was no way that was gonna happen over the next two years Tapia continued to dazzle fans and
02:09impress critics with his exuberant personality and flashy boxing style earning a third world title
02:15and a reputation as one of boxing's best pound for pound oh when you're sitting on the top there's
02:20only one way to go and that's down so I never wanted to get that feeling never never our second place to
02:27me is nothing everything to me is winning winning and no matter what I do it's a challenge for me but
02:33after 11 years and 48 fights Tapia's unbeaten streak and aura of invincibility came to a crashing
02:39haul losing a pair of highly controversial decisions to Paulie Ayala the truth I wanted to knock everybody
02:47out I wanted to kill everybody because what they did to me I went and fought a good fight you want to
02:54tell you what really really hurt me looking in my wife's eyes she keeps me going in life she keeps me
03:01strong and when I seen her eyes it's just like I let her down I have before quite a bit of times you
03:08know but in the ring I would never do that and I let myself down for losing and it was harsh were
03:17these losses a case of poor scoring by the ringside judges a bad matchup of styles or of greater
03:23significance a sign of encroaching age and eroding skills for the 34 year old Tapia to tell you the truth
03:31I'm only getting better with age training getting back on my toes the drive to continue going you
03:39know what there's not too many people that have five world titles in this world there's not too many
03:43people got one there's not too many people got two I got four I want to get my fifth one that's my goal
03:49in life to say you know what I can be up with the best as a legend Tapia in the twilight the craziness
04:03continues how the last couple of chapters will play out anybody's guess back here with my partner Bobby
04:09says well Johnny Tapia says he has trouble at 122 making 122 figures his best bet to win a fifth
04:16world title is at 126 is this the right weight for him well certainly if he doesn't feel comfortable at
04:21122 you don't want to fight weak and you don't want to fight mentally not thinking you're 100 percent
04:25now he wants a fifth world title but he made it very clear to me that the money is more important
04:29than boxing being treated as a business now on one hand he has big money the other hand the fifth title
04:34he's taking the hand with big money but their fight looms out there between him and Prince Nazim Ahmed
04:39that can deliver him the money not a title but the claim he wants no a mystery of course that he's
04:45gone through a number of trainers over the years what does Buddy McGirt bring to the table trainer and a
04:51fighter have a very special and intimate relationship it's a very strange relationship sometimes almost
04:55inexplicable sometimes it isn't so much what the trainer can show you that he identifies with you he
05:00understands your thought process right now Buddy McGirt has told us that he's not done anything to
05:04change or improve Johnny but to bring what he has out of him in a better fashion move him up a
05:09couple steps of what he does he identifies with Johnny knows how to motivate him that's his key role
05:14right now Freddie Roach Jesse Reed on several occasions he was like the Billy Martin of Johnny
05:20Tap kept coming back and forth even Eddie Futch now Buddy McGirt why do you think he's been through so
05:25many guys Johnny Tapia is a very emotional guy that wears his emotions on his sleeve maybe he's on a search
05:31and seek mission looking for that guy that's going to make him comfortable inside and out all right
05:36let's get the keys to victory for Tapia versus Soto okay Steve Johnny Tapia is chasing that fifth world
05:42title and a big big payday while Cesar Soto has upset on his mind first for Johnny Tapia always overall speed
05:52hands and feet he has it all next sharp counter punching he'll make you miss and make you pay he's
05:58one of the very best and lastly multiple combinations he throws so many punches so quickly so accurately it's
06:03almost impossible to defend here against Famicito Gomez he slips effortlessly to his left with his head
06:10jab and right hand go whizzing by
06:14Famicito hits nothing now Johnny Tapia on the attack he's made a miss now he has to make a pay he shuts down his
06:20distance with such great speed again feet and hands both coming in jab right hand followed by
06:25another jab in right hand the Famicito Gomez loses his mouthpiece stepping in that last right hand was
06:33deadly Cesar Soto has got to get on the inside he cannot outbox Tapia from the outside he just can't
06:40do it work his body too maybe he can slow down the speedster and lastly left hook to the head and to the
06:45body it is clearly his best weapon here Soto on the right against Ahmed can't fight out here against
06:51Johnny Tapia he's got to come in now he tries to throw a little left hand but stops and the right
06:56hand and stops that one too because Ahmed's reflexes pretty quick but that left hook lands on
07:01stop stop bang the left hook almost takes Ahmed's head off Soto has to use the left hook all night long
07:08all right so here at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas that takes us up to the traditional ring walks
07:20and here is the upset minded young veteran Cesar Soto turned pro believe it or not when he was 13 and a
07:26half at 28 already fought for 15 years 65 fights he's been in a lot of wars
07:42the WBC featherweight belt over Luisito Espinosa in a rough foul play fight lost the crown to Prince
08:04Nasim Ahmed Bobby this is a tough gritty brawler with a brick of a chin he's never been down or out
08:10Tapia calls them one-dimensional comes right at you hits hard your feelings on this guy
08:15I'll tell you what's happy his opinion about so it was pretty realistic
08:18he doesn't know if there's not much at all very tough never been down like you
08:21said come forward a bunch of both hands now Johnny Tapia's best bet is to box
08:26smart from the outside stay sharp box but we all know Johnny Tapia when he
08:31gets hit good this will be a heavily Johnny Tapia audience
08:37many of Johnny's fans on hand from Albuquerque and some pre-4th of July

09:50the dramatic entrance of johnny tapia if he could he'd probably try to shake hands with every
10:01person in the crowd some last-minute prayers bobby the danny romero fight probably put him
10:10on the map did the two paulie ayala fights produce any self-doubt in tapia you know steve i think i'm
10:16on safe ground when i say this about the ayala fights i thought johnny won the first fight by the
10:21slightest of margins but i know the second fight was a robbery i think the first fight put some
10:27serious doubt in johnny's mind he got taken out of his game plan he couldn't get back to work right
10:31and he let that one slip away but after the second fight his confidence was renewed he's a brand new
10:36man ready to fight to the death he has to deal with defeat for the first time in his life also
10:43looking to overcome the obstacles of age and weight and harder hitting opponents
10:49tale of the tape at 34 tapia six years older than soto slight height advantage tapia the reach even
11:00at yesterday's way in tapia the heaviest of his career soto 126 tonight tapia 135 soto 132

14:01mexico his weight 125 and one half pounds his record stands at 49 wins two losses two draws with 26 wins coming
14:13by way of knockout ladies and gentlemen here is the four-time world champion in two weight categories
14:21introducing the one and only johnny mi vida loca tapia
14:38and once again our referee in charge now to give instructions joe cortez
14:51all right johnny
14:56okay let's pick up these trunks here
14:59okay gentlemen we will know the rules in the dressing room
15:04i expect a good clean fight
15:06to an apple a limpia
15:08we're not going to go play ball
15:10you can't wait low blows give me good sportsman like conduct not for l yeah
15:13number guys i'm fair but i'm firm
15:16touch him up
15:16a major factor in this fight could be quickness soto not as quick as tapia
15:24but he is awkward and hits hard tapia told us he thinks soto will try to lure him into a street fight
15:29it's all he knows how to do tapia feels it'll go deep
15:35and as mentioned earlier he feels that soto is all about hitting hard he's not fast
15:44we'll see what happens you know they listed johnny tapia as being taller and
15:48soto when they stood you know head to head pretty much sort of looked a little taller even though
15:53sometimes he fights lower
15:55soto often leads with his head tapia very susceptible to cuts and butts so that could be a factor
16:02can soto take tapia out of his game get inside lure him into a brawl make him lose his cool
16:08soto a gritty brother likes to come forward in a hunched over stance his chin tucked down gloves up in
16:17front of his face will try to grind you down he's got a great chin and watch for the left hooks
16:23he threw a pretty nice overhand right to start the fight soto did and looks very strong tapia usually
16:30likes to send a message early throws a lot of punches from all angles accurate purposeful very good hand
16:37speed and reflexes terrific jab straight right hand by tapia defense for johnny tapia a strength solid
16:44chin johnny has all the speed on his side with his feet and his hands and he has to use that along with
16:51his moves and counter punching abilities it's just that simple but he does get taken out of his game
16:56plan because of that macho side he has fights with so much passion he just has to keep all that emotion
17:03under wraps as mentioned so many times during tapia fights has a puncher's mentality but not a big punch
17:10but he does love to brawl although his game is predicated when he's successful on speed and movement
17:17plus energy and emotion he's using a nice triple jab now too a couple of short right hands popping over
17:22the jab of soto
17:34tapia is still very hungry after all these years at 34. he still enjoys the game the challenge he says
17:41when i get a good butt kicking i'll quit which as you can attest to is not fun no i can attest to that and
17:47i did quit tapia complaining to joe cortez that soto is throwing elbows well he warned them both so
17:57joe cortez will get this fight under control right away
18:02tapia was involved in a pretty dirty fight against famacito gomez his last fight a convincing six
18:08round tko for johnny in in front of his hometown fans of albuquerque and soto of course was involved
18:14in a foul fest with prince nasim hamed a couple of years ago you noticed hamed hold and grab more
18:20often than usual probably because hamed was concerned about soto's power his power and i think
18:27his strength on the inside really upset hamed
18:34as we head for the bell first round
18:41he's doing what you're doing johnny boxing beautiful okay just don't pull straight back
18:53you get your rhythm you're boxing good keep doing that you get your rhythm one shot inside get out
18:58okay it's beautiful okay okay it's beautiful okay okay no no take a deep breath squeeze my arms okay
19:06squeeze it down baby i got this squeeze down i love you grandma and grandpa albuquerque i'll
19:11steal your choppy baby okay listen your box is great keep doing what you're doing well watch the
19:16incident where johnny complains about an elbow
19:18okay i see that little elbow he picked up his forearm and his elbow
19:25i don't think it was completely on purpose but i think once the elbow wound up in his face he figured
19:28why not let me just push it a little further okay baby your butts are beautiful okay he's like the
19:34champion he's all yours more of an occupational hazard steve yep well tappy has been working with
19:40buddy mcgert on his movement on staying up on his toes making his opponent turn to avoid head
19:46butts and to counter properly he knows that soto basically will throw the uppercut the left hook
19:52then his right he said he has to slip under the hook make him turn and then catch him with any shot he
19:57wants but i feel like i was that wasn't all right break break out bring out well i feel like i was
20:02sorry to watch out his
20:03oh tapia on the seat of his pants it was a hit combination trip five six seven the left hook
20:22only the second time in tapia's career that he goes down the first was in his second pro fight 1988
20:29versus james d well here's something about timing if a guy's tripping or spilling or
20:34wolf bounce and you hit him it still counts as a knockdown
20:39tapia complaining to referee joe cortez that it wasn't
20:44a clean hit i think i think the feet got a little tangled there and he hit him as he tripped
20:50looks like a knockdown reacts the same way counts the same way it happens at the 30 second mark of
20:56round two from the much ballyhooed soto left hook while his foot was stepped on that's what tapia was
21:04complaining about but the punch made contact it's an official knockdown no question about it and tapia
21:10tasting the canvas for the first time since 1988 it is second fight
21:20has to be a very bizarre feeling for the veteran from albuquerque
21:25it's not a good place to wind up when you feel sort of embarrassed
21:29slash mad and i know johnny not believing it wasn't a clean knock down on top of it another hard left hook
21:35to the head by soto and that got tapia's attention let's see how he responds he responded with two
21:43nice combinations speed speed speed that's johnny's key left uppercut to the chin by soto tapia smiles
21:51which probably means he's hurt or at least affected negatively by it tapia coming back with the left
22:00jab powerful shotgun jabs there by tapia very impressive soto continues to press the attack tapia
22:09backpedaling which is not what he wants to do
22:16very unusual position for johnny tapia
22:23he is having his problems with the young veteran cesar soto early in the fight
22:28left hook again by soto that's scored now a right hand by soto
22:36tremendous round by cesar soto it has to be scored 10-8 his favorite knockdown gives to the 10-8
22:43because johnny did not come back and win the rest of that round don't get in the wall
22:47okay don't get in the wall with this guy okay keep boxing him he can't hit you with them shots
22:52if you got him turning okay he's only hitting you if you're standing there all right okay you're only
22:57going to step on your foot if you're there keep him turning okay how are you feeling let's take a
23:03look and listen to the knockdown okay now listen to me you're dropping in the jab one time playing the jab
23:09can't see the feet right now but johnny comes around and here you see he got hit but it wasn't a clean
23:14knockdown he tripped over quick three four five six seven eight
23:29let's go nice and smart johnny don't get in no exchanges don't worry about the crowd
23:34your box is beautiful baby
23:36you can hear plain and clear johnny tapia complaining to joe cortez that it was the result
23:44of soto stepping on his foot that he went down although from the replay and from the original
23:51shot it looked like the left hook score and it was a correct call by cortez
23:59knockdown though was more from a tripping leg problem than a punch but if you fall as you're
24:04being hit regardless it's a knockdown he did get up very quickly and he didn't look very hurt or
24:12stunned as a result of it but it goes in the books as a knockdown round three scheduled for ten good
24:20right hand by tapia and he blocked the left hook by soto on the return
24:25he's going to be very very careful not to be taken out of his game
24:36not to lose his cool not to get induced into a slugfest wild swing and a miss by soto look to end it on
24:43one punch there johnny's working a nice double jab but he's not following up enough i think straight
24:47right hand to the gut right down the middle to the body and the inside and maybe come up with an uppercut
24:53johnny's working that jab well but he's not following the combination
24:57tapia looking to regroup here in the third round after a troublesome first six minutes
25:09right off the left shoulder of soto no damage the right hand by tapia
25:14and soto missing with the big left johnny tabby using the double jab he counted right once a while
25:22but he's not a one punch knockout artist he really can't sit on one punch no matter how much he sits
25:27on his punches he doesn't have that type of power he's got to work
25:30out hustle out work accumulate that's tapia's game
25:41not ever buddy mcgur told him to stop pulling straight out with his head up
25:44very good very good example of what not to do don't pull straight up pull out to the side
25:49make the guy look for you
25:56he's standing right in front of soto he told us
26:00he wanted to do more well you know johnny gets emotion i think it hurt
26:06so to one of those body shots so those face winks you see a little hurt a little pain
26:11tapia coming on down goes soto steve that was the result of body work
26:17so
26:24it's over
26:32okay
26:47and put Cesar Soto down for good with huge body shots.
26:54I believe the body shot started that,
26:57and he got another one to clean,
26:59and I can't even begin to communicate
27:01the kind of pain that causes.
27:03I've been hit with him, I know.
27:05For people at home who don't know,
27:07it is oh so painful,
27:09and it doesn't go away for a long time, Steve.
27:11Johnny, how do you stop this guy like that?
27:13Eddie, that was for you, Eddie.
27:15Eddie, that was for you.
27:17Eddie, that was for you.
27:19You're gonna beat it, baby.
27:21I love you.
27:23That's for you, Eddie.
27:25Johnny, that was for you.
27:27Stealing the show.
27:29We're gonna win, Eddie.
27:31I love you, Johnny.
27:33I'm gonna beat it to your champion.
27:35Hey, man, congratulations on you, baby.
27:37Saying hello to somebody back home, obviously.
27:39Big hug from his new trainer, Buddy McGarrett.
27:41What a statement by Taffy tonight.
27:43He's never been stopped in over 60 fights,
27:45and what does Johnny do?
27:47Stop him, I guess, putting the rest of rumors
27:49that maybe he's losing it.
27:51Talk about it again.
27:53It took to Soto's 66th fight
27:55for him to be knocked out.
27:57We'll watch Johnny dig into the body.
27:59There's the one body shot that started it.
28:01But Johnny comes in with another one there.
28:03You can see Soto, you see him bending.
28:05He's still trying to dig it.
28:07Hits him to the jaw.
28:09I think those were still body shots that hurt.
28:11I think the one body shot wound up right in the solar plexus.
28:15Look right there, right in the solar plexus.
28:17Middle of the body, you can see
28:19somehow the strength come out of Soto's stance,
28:21his arms, everything got weak.
28:23That was body work.
28:25No power shortage here tonight in both fights.
28:35Let's get it over to Jimmy Lennon Jr. for the official word.
28:43Let's go.
28:45Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of 2 minutes 47 seconds.
28:51In round number 3, a referee in charge, Joe Cortez, reaches the count of 10.
28:55The winner by way of knockout, Johnny Mi Vida Loca, Trumpia.
29:03Yes, the 4th of July comes early for Johnny Tappy.
29:21It appears that Buddy McGirt kept Johnny focused.
29:35Didn't let him get too crazy.
29:37Made him working very purposefully.
29:39Got the job done.
29:40Buddy just came over and said body work.
29:43Tappy hits the half century mark in victories.
29:46Gets back on track here in Las Vegas.
29:4952 and 2.
29:5150 wins, 2 losses, 2 draws, 27 knockouts.
29:55Now 2 for 2 since he lost to Pauli Ayala in their rematch October of 2000.
30:01Let's get it over to Jim Cray.
30:02Jim.
30:03All right.
30:04Thank you very much, Steve.
30:05Johnny, congratulations to you.
30:07It wasn't as easy, I'm sure, as you might have thought.
30:10But what happened when you started to go to the body there?
30:12It looked like you made a concerted effort right there,
30:14that if you went to the body, it would end the fight.
30:16First of all, I'd like to give a lot of thanks and praise to God
30:18for guiding me and protecting me.
30:20Also, my wife for being there through thick and thin.
30:21Hey, I told everybody I went with all the promoters,
30:24with all the rest, and I got the best, and I'm happy.
30:26With Cesar Soto, I got all the respect to the world for him.
30:29I just caught him with a good shot.
30:30In the body.
30:31In the body.
30:32Well, first, he gave me the 8 count,
30:33and everybody knows what happened there.
30:34Well, but let's talk about that.
30:35That's the first time you've been down in 13 years,
30:37only the second time in your career.
30:39What was it like for you to go down?
30:41I was never down.
30:42Oh, he stepped on my shoe, and I fell.
30:43Well, but it was ruled down, and Joe,
30:45the replay indicates that he made a good call.
30:47We're going to take a look at that,
30:48and you'll tell us about it here.
30:49You tell me.
30:50Your honest opinion, because I'll see you right back.
30:52Look at his shoe.
30:54Watch.
30:55He's on your shoe.
30:56No question about it.
30:57But it comes at the same time as a punch,
30:58so Joe's left in an awkward position.
31:00You've got to call that a knockdown.
31:01I give Joe all the respect in the world, you know?
31:03I don't got nothing bad to say.
31:04I said, I'm happy.
31:05I won this victorious.
31:06I want the best promoter in the world,
31:07and I'm happy to get bigger and better things.
31:08Turned out to be meaningless.
31:09As we jump ahead here now and we look,
31:11when you take him out, what made you?
31:14Was it Buddy in your corner?
31:15What made you decide to go to the body?
31:17My corner in the second round.
31:18Buddy said, fight smart.
31:19I've been working hard in the gym.
31:21I've gotten stronger, so I went to the body
31:24to see what he had under there,
31:25and I caught him with a good shot.
31:28Well, there it is right there,
31:30and unfortunately, our monitor.
31:33There we go.
31:34We got it back.
31:35Tell us about it, Johnny.
31:38I caught him with an uppercut.
31:39First of all, we were banging.
31:40I hit my head.
31:41I caught him with a body shot,
31:42and then I went up to the head
31:43and went back to the body,
31:44and I caught him.
31:45Last thought.
31:46What will be next for you?
31:47Will it be Hamed at 126?
31:49What do you want to do?
31:50Everything's in the hands of my promoter, DK.
31:52Don?
31:53We're going after Hamed and anybody else
31:54that can put us on gloves,
31:55because this is the best fighter in the world
