00:00to our new house making it a home now the real work begins just ripping it apart with my bare

00:15hands like therapy you know you could do anger management courses with demolishing walls I am

00:24planning to run this year's London Marathon for the Institute of Cancer he said I mean I was

00:30still waiting for the prognosis a double break in the leg is extremely serious he's going to be out

00:38of action for everything my dad has come over for a working holiday look at this wall

00:50Laura is a friend of mine basically we're doing stucco plastering yeah he could make

00:57our millions in Italy skill set yeah Jazz has definitely pulled out the bag shall we

01:04is so cool it's been a couple of months since Jasmine John and their kids moved into their

01:23dream forever home on the Costa del Sol and two weeks since John's accident put him very much out

01:29of action the frustration is off the charts we were just about to get the the whip cracked with

01:36things jazz was getting quieter at work and we could start to focus on stuff and then I've managed to

01:43break my leg in two places I would say probably one of the second or third most frustrating and darkest

01:51days of my life since his accident everything has ground to a halt with the help of local builder Carlos

02:00and his team Jasmine and John had started phase one of the build tackling the first floor bedrooms in

02:06the family bathroom but they're a long way from completion we've had to take to Carlos that we

02:13haven't got anything ready for you to do right now John is really worried that we're going to lose him

02:19because he's going to have other work obviously he's going to be doing different things the chances

02:24of us finding someone else to help us do this renovation in a hurry are very slim as their

02:33summer deadline is now just over four months away there can be no more breaks in this renovation we

02:40don't have a plan B and our schedule as far already out the window as it is will be further out the

02:47window in that pool and there's no water in that pool so it will land with a big splash and break into

02:53pieces we really need to gas gates on time is passing and it's not just the build that's been put on hold

03:07one minute you're training for a marathon you're setting your sights on a marathon the next minute

03:12you're just setting your sights on healing I even remember lying on the paddle court with my broken

03:18leg thinking crumbs how will I run a marathon with this injury whilst he is obviously very disappointed

03:30he's taking it better than I thought he would I almost thought at one point he's probably going to

03:37say that he'll do it in a wheelchair or something because he's so determined

03:42today we've got a follow-up appointment at the hospital to look at John's leg I think they're going

03:54to x-ray it's just to check that it's healing okay now begins the ordeal of getting him in and out of the car

04:05if I lift it up and you whip out the pillows

04:07I hope all right let me get ahead of you freedom

04:23okay oh it's the closest you've come to a hug for ages

04:37it's a 30 minute drive up the coast to the hospital in Marbella

04:47my taxi drive by now

04:51nurse

04:53general dog's body

04:57and also guess what friday is valentine's day

05:01what are you gonna take me out for dinner where are we gonna go

05:07get the bandage off and we are at a point in the recovery it's like a landmark

05:14the next few landmarks are bandage off

05:17being able to walk on a walking frame being able to walk on crutches being able to walk on

05:22one crutch being able to walk on no crutches

05:25and a couple of hours later

05:27the hospital visit went really well and the doctor said that he looks like he's improving a lot

05:47his poor leg does still look really swollen and kind of looks a weird colour but it's really good progress

05:55overall and well I can't wait for him to be back on his feet to be honest

06:01keep trying to work out how to hold me that looks romantic

06:03it's very different the way they treat a leg break now

06:25there's no cast so you've got basically a broken leg that's just

06:30there according to the doctors they say it's actually better for the recovery

06:36but I guess that's the the advancement of modern medicine

06:40I'd say it's it's been almost as challenging and stressful as having a newborn baby

06:57it's been that life-changing

07:03with his bandage off and a bit of confidence back over the next few days

07:08john's moving around the house a little more it feels like it's been such a long time since

07:13john's accident but he is making amazing progress they've said to him that he can start walking with

07:23the crutches just putting a tiny bit of weight on the injured leg he's been doing lots of things

07:29like loading the dishwasher and even a bit of cooking the only problem he has when he makes food he makes

07:37it and then he can't go anywhere because he can't hold a plate and walk with the crutches bless him

07:45with renewed positivity jasmine and john are keen to get phase one of the build tackling the first

07:50floor with its three bedrooms and two bathrooms going again

07:53and have asked carlos to come back to work in the family bathroom

08:03oh such a relief to have carlos back uh with his lovely smile and always you know has this amazing

08:11can do attitude i've been hating having that bathroom just sat like that empty like a cave

08:23for all this time so it is really nice to get things back on track and resume the work that we've started

08:32it had been left with the walls and floor prepped and the ceiling lowered for spotlights

08:37no sweet or tiles yet but the lights can go in although not in the spots carlos had planned

08:42i'm not sure about the bathroom how quick it's going to be there's a lot to do

09:11and also some of the stuff um like the underfloor heating carlos hasn't done before

09:20it's quite unusual to have underfloor heating in spain so he's going to get someone in to help him

09:26with that at the moment i'm kind of feeling relieved to get the project going again and to get things moving

09:33but at the same time this sort of knot in my stomach of dread that something's going to go wrong

09:46with work back underway and the bathroom suite and tiles now ordered online to a local business

09:52jasmine's called in a decorator to continue where they left off in the kids bedrooms

09:56my dad has come over for a working holiday

10:04right hopefully we haven't forgotten anything yeah well it's not that far to the shop

10:11no exactly it's good to have someone like my dad that you can rely on to do a brilliant job and

10:18you know i'm just really grateful to him for coming all this way to do some painting and decorating

10:24you all right dad do you want some tea yes please love no sugar no sugar i've been painting ever

10:32since i was 12 years old so that's 58 years ago uh i used to go with me dad you know when i was at

10:41school sadly my dad died and we needed money coming into the house so i picked up the toolbox and

10:48went on yeah it's lovely to come and it's great to be able to do something that the kids are going

10:53to like i think that you know it's something that they'll remember remember me for i'm sure you'll

10:58paint over it in a couple of years hopefully i'll come and paint over it myself what do you think

11:03then there's a lot of work to be done isn't there here looking around a load of work to do

11:07is it worse than you were expecting well it won't be finishing it while i'm here this for two weeks

11:16no but hopefully we can get those bedrooms done he's going to start with albion's bedroom i've moved

11:21everything out of there already and i've put albie temporarily in with his sister and what we're going

11:27to do is wallpaper one wall we've got this really amazing rainbow vomit wallpaper and it's it's like a

11:37big sort of mural almost i think i'm just trying to deliver what albion's asked for but in a kind

11:43of way that will look nice and tasteful my kids you know they've had a lot of upheaval with moving

11:50from the uk out to spain this is their home that's why i kind of have indulged them a little bit

11:56with what they want in their rooms so you see we're just a blank canvas at the moment really

12:06yeah and we've already done a little bit of work in here so it's just had a quick coat of paint to

12:11tart it up a little bit but it's still very basic and all the look at all the electrics

12:18me and dad get on really well we have a huge amount of mutual respect we have a laugh we have

12:29a very loving relationship my dad he is a funny character i remember when i was probably in my mid-20s

12:40he said to me you're the head of the family now i don't want to be the head of the family i'm busy

12:49like partying and stuff we would do anything for each other but we don't expect anything of each

12:58other apart from coming to decorate the children's bedrooms of course shall we put a little bit on

13:04the wall try it yeah and try it just to just see how it looks there you go it's quite nice what do

13:11you think do you like it or is it too yellowy no i like it i think i'll be all like it shame john

13:17can't come upstairs to have a look he'll probably hate it take a picture i will take a picture i like it

13:25but in the picture it looks so much darker why look looks like someone's peed up the wall

13:37it does look darker doesn't it just take

13:44mixing it with a drop of white you can see we're going to come up with a much paler yellow

13:50which might it still looks yellow next to the white i think that's better i think it is

13:58once it's on all the wall you know yeah i think it looks loads better yeah

14:07i mean it's great that we are getting things moving again that makes me very happy but we've had

14:14such a setback with the broken leg and there is so much still to do here i don't know what the

14:23timeline's even looking like now it's going to be a lot of hard work to get everything finished by

14:28the summer

14:46with carlos's team working the odd day to prep the bathroom for tiling

14:51and jasmine's dad peter busy in albion's bedroom slow but steady progress is being made on the first

14:57floor we spent some time online and john found this amazing colorful beautiful mural wallpaper which my

15:08dad's going to hang in albie's room

15:13so it's the moment of truth we've got to open it up and see if it is as good in reality as it looked

15:23online jasmine has ordered the paper from a company in sweden who have printed the sheets to her

15:29measurements for the one wall it's cost around 300 pounds oh it's lovely i was skeptical i was

15:39skeptical about indulging our children in rainbow wallpaper but no but this is nice it is like classy

15:47is it classy rainbow vomit it does look like a rainbow's vomited i'm worried it looks a bit garish

15:57they've already put these lines to cut it off i just want to make sure they've put them in the

16:01right place and it's going to fit the room which is 97 and a half so what we should be looking at here

16:06is 97 and a half inches plus another four inches and then cut it so normally when you have wallpaper it's

16:14already oh yeah it's already cut isn't it what is it normally like it's not cut it's just on a roll

16:19no it's just one roll yeah one strip the point is you've got one stab at laying a piece of wallpaper

16:26like this yeah because you can't just roll a bit off the next roll and exactly every piece is different

16:31yes i'm quite looking forward to seeing what looks like when i go up because never having used bespoke

16:36wallpapers before or you know custom wallpaper before it's good that is also going to be really

16:43difficult to line each piece up so it looks like a seamless bit of art well i'll do it for a living

16:48mate fair enough that's what he does all the time the quality of it is beautiful the colors pop so

16:59amazingly and i think once it's up on the wall it's going to be spectacular with painting in albion's

17:07bedroom close to completion that paper will be up on the walls this afternoon

17:16but before jasmine can lend a hand she's got a few hours of a place in the sun work to get through first

17:22so i'm heading off to do my voiceover now hi bob morning jasmine you good how's life it's for

17:32some shows that i've filmed previously so i've got to do the voiceover i'll be talking on zoom to a

17:38producer back in the uk oh hi sarah oh hi just how's it going all right thank you we have a sound

17:48technician there in the studio he'll be making sure everything sounds good perfect shall we crack on

17:57i'm jasmine harman and for more than 20 years i've been helping house hunters find their dream homes

18:02overseas today i'll be using all my skills to try and help leslie who's brought along her mother-in-law

18:08carol whilst hubby neil's tied up at work perfect let's move to the next bit whenever you're ready

18:14i am ready the budget for their dream holiday home is 260 000 pounds yeah let's do 10 again before

18:23we head to our first property i want to take these ladies to the central hub of our search

18:28fuenguerola's main square called the plaza de la constitution originally opened in 1841

18:34by the town's first mayor it's surrounded by shops cafes and a very pretty church called nuestra

18:41senora del rosario oh perfect perfect i mean i've done it for a long long time so i think i know

18:50what i'm doing by now hopefully with another couple of episodes beautifully crafted jasmine's back on site

19:00just in time to help her dad the last time i used these over was all when we were painting

19:06the house white i didn't get myself too much of a mess

19:14how do i look dad it was definitely too short in the body for me

19:20i don't know if it's my size i'm not sure if i've got mine or albion's one it feels a bit short

19:24of the body yeah i don't even want to say the word but it reminded me of part of a camel's body

19:39i'm ready

19:42oh i think i've split my overalls

19:44no they're all right this mural wallpaper there is no margin for error every piece

19:52is unique and so you have to get it right first time and peter's taking it steady with his apprentice

20:02well i'm not planning to ever actually hang the paper but she could oh she can try one

20:08after two or three there are maybe jazz can put one up because i'm not going to be here forever

20:14someone's got to be able to carry on in the family you know she could earn 300 pound a day in london

20:20with a with a bit of wallpapering skills

20:29time for the master class to begin so all i'm doing is i'm going to make some marks on the wall

20:35that's uh tell us where our paper's gonna end up if we put it straight against the wall yeah

20:45so we've got those marks again and ignore that one yeah so is that when you need this yeah

20:52it wants to go all the way down well a little bit more just until so doesn't hit the skirt

20:57jasmine and peter are using a plumb line guided by gravity to give them a perfectly straight line

21:05it's pretty good so we can pull our paper once any tiny imperfections have been uncovered using a torch

21:13and removed look at this whoa it's lovely isn't it pull up pull on pulling it slowly

21:20and with the paper unrolled and cutting to lengths well i can have a rest of that let jens cut that all up

21:30it's like giant wrapping paper it's the moment of truth

21:34my role my role is the roller roller roll the roller roll i just need a pair of roller skates and then

21:46i'll be to have the full complemented roll

21:56and then it'll go up all the way up and down across

21:58i can't believe in all these years and decades the last time i did any wallpapery reviews and a little girl

22:09there we go

22:10i'll tell you what you could do jess support that so if it drops it don't tear just keep it off the

22:16wall yeah

22:17so i wanted to help my dad putting the wallpaper up but he doesn't need my help

22:39he's completely capable of doing it on his own so he let me help a little bit but really he was

22:50doing all the hard stuff i suppose it's like being a parent when you've got a little toddler and you

22:56let them help they make it worse but you let them think they've helped me i think that's what my dad

23:03was doing with me that looks so nice yeah i wouldn't trust myself to do something like this

23:24did you ever expect me to move abroad not really no i mean but i i think it's a great idea

23:32i think it's a great idea do you yeah

23:43dad it's looking amazing thank you i mean that join looks perfect you've got four more pieces

23:50four more people we're almost halfway there

23:52and the next day excited that she's finally been able to put a bit of personality into their home

24:03you've got everything out of the car i kind of wish i could wait till the whole room was done and show

24:12it to him but if i say to him don't go into your bedroom because i want to keep it as a surprise

24:18it's going to be like a red rag to a ball he won't be able to resist going in there

24:23it's good for him to see it now to see if it meets his expectations and well if it doesn't

24:29it's a different top ready that's so cool

24:59oh abby's reaction to his wallpaper was priceless he really loved it what do you say to grandad thank

25:09you it's a pleasure mate just to see you happy and what about the rest of the color of the room

25:16we'll just have to get it more colorful because it looks a bit weird when it's really colorful and

25:22then it's just next to white things possibly it's really cool so you're happy

25:30happy is it better than your wildest dreams um it's basically the same as my wildest dreams is it

25:43that it looks great yeah it sort of feels like this is the first thing that we've done

25:50in the house to really make it our own open your eyes

25:54everything that we've done up until now has all just been necessity whereas this we've chosen

26:08and it's it feels quite special

26:13oh astro i forgot you

26:24while progress is being made in albion's bedroom that's largely down to jasmine's

26:33decorated dad peter the family bathroom is causing a few headaches

26:47so i'm just having a little meltdown

26:49it feels like the only person i can rely on at the moment is my dad because he's just been amazing

26:55carlos has been ill and that hasn't really helped as well although you know we can't really progress

27:03further with the bathroom until the underfloor heating is done the underfloor heating guys that

27:08he had lined up let him down so i've been trying to find someone else and they've let me down as well

27:15so it just seems like a load of nonsense really when someone says yeah yeah i can do this job great

27:26and then they promise you the world and they don't deliver

27:32it's very difficult to keep it together to be honest i'm ready to throw in the towel

27:37the pressure is weighing heavily the dream of a new life in the sun for her family

27:45still looks a long way away sensing that a pick-me-up might be needed a good friend has flown out for a

27:52quick visit

28:06laura is a friend of mine she is also one of my co-presenters on a place in the sun

28:12and we've been friends for a long time i didn't bring sunshine with me sorry i i think you might

28:19have brought some other weather with you look at this come on inside you know when things feel a bit

28:25overwhelming it is lovely to have a friendly face someone you know who's been through what you're

28:32going through where's john when you make a big move aboard i actually think you value seeing

28:50friendly faces much more than you did before how are you finding it kind of living in it and when

28:57there's the mess we're not into the worst of it yet so right i think give it another month and then

29:04it's going to get it's going to be hell yeah had a few setbacks yeah i think it's safe to say we're

29:08slightly behind schedule because of my leg but it will all work out in the end and do you know what

29:13i always think in a renovation project the worst that is now but like like at the end of the tunnel

29:19you're going to forget all of this when you get to the end and you've got that beautiful

29:22product i think it's like having a baby that's how i describe doing a renovation project

29:27because i'm like oh you know it's a bit rubbish in the beginning because you have morning sickness

29:30and you feel a bit rough and you're like oh my word like this is tough then you kind of start to get

29:34to the nice stage where you feel better then it gets difficult again and then at the end you have

29:38the lovely product yeah exactly yeah only difference is a house doesn't answer back a child no exactly

29:43and this is definitely my last one

29:44laura's very experienced with renovations having her there just felt good it felt reassuring

29:59i love the color of these doors this is albie's room

30:05wow it's my dad you met my dad before i think nice indeed nice to meet you wow wow wow like it

30:12that's so cool i was like is it paint it's paper right that's paper oh yeah that's brilliant excuse

30:17jaz i've just got to grab something work to do work to do nice to see you so albion said he wanted

30:24his room to look like a rainbow had vomited in there did he really he actually said that

30:32brilliant this looks like you're almost there though you must be excited i am excited i'm really

30:38really excited to get albion back in his room and we've got lots of really nice little quirky things

30:44to go in here that i think he's going to love it well i know it's been a bit stressful there's

30:50there's a lot going on i've got a little treat for you i'm going to take you somewhere do something

30:54fun it's not a spa day do you remember when we went on our spa day when we were both pregnant it's

31:01not a spa day oh no i'm disappointed now no you're gonna love it bring it on come on i'm sensing they're

31:08both frustrated that it's not moved as far forward as they would have liked it to but i think that's

31:14a good thing and i think they they absolutely shouldn't put pressure on themselves they're taking

31:18their time to think about how it's going to work for their lifestyle what the end goal is john

31:30love you love you love you jaz is going to love going off for a few hours with laura

31:47and having some girly time jaz has been full on since the minute my leg broke and just to get out

31:52of the house and to switch your brain off for a little bit it's gonna it's gonna yeah it's gonna

31:57work wonders a drive up the coast to the other side of marbella is the cultural hot pot that is malaga

32:07city i'm feeling quite excited actually i'm not exactly sure yet what we're doing it's quite nice

32:17just to get out have a day out in malaga we always love coming to the city

32:24in we go i want you to meet victoria hello i think this is going to be really good for jazz because

32:36it will show her a way that she can upcycle existing and old furniture that she has making

32:43it work in the project but giving a different look to it victoria is showing laura and jasmine how to give

32:52wooden furniture an aged antique finish they'll be using a simple wooden box to try it out step one

33:00is sanding so what about the prep jazz yeah step two is adding a plaster based glue to create some

33:09texture basically we're doing stucco plastering yeah we could make our millions adding to your skill set

33:15yeah looking beautiful i think i've done one a bit thicker than yours but that's all right let's see

33:24let's see let's see which one comes up the best time for the first coat of paint

33:33i think it's just really important that you have a bit of you time so even if this is like maybe not the

33:40you time that you're expecting no but this is cool it's still a break away from it and just take like

33:47one or two days out of the week where you're like okay yeah if only right it's not that easy but yeah

33:54i should do i i you know speaking to you and in my own head thinking maybe i do need to get

34:02a bit more help just to get the project moving quickly in the direction that i want it to be

34:08moving into because it's pretty tricky at the moment and with the paint dried it's time for a quick

34:16sand and another coat of paint this is going to look really interesting see now mine now you can't see

34:23any of the lighter color and you can't see any of the original blue that you painted on

34:27and after another round of drying and sanding the aged effect is starting to come through

34:34this looks at least 100 years old if not 200 years old

34:42i feel like with everything that's been going on over the last few weeks this is almost this was like

34:47a holiday it's really lovely thank you so much well i just love like you know coming to see you

34:54for a little catch-up because although you know we'll send messages and chat on the phone

34:59occasionally actually i never get to see it it's rare it's rare to be in the same place at the same

35:05time that's so cool yeah that is a great fun that is a little transformation oh that was so much fun

35:12thank you thank you i know i'm leaving you well i came in the rain and i'm leaving in the sunshine

35:20and i'm leaving jazz with some new skills and obviously the reassurance that i'm there for her

35:26i'm at the end of the phone and she can call me whenever she wants oh it's been really nice to hang

35:32out with laura this afternoon i really take on board her advice about making sure not to burn myself out

35:41making sure i have some me time looking after myself that's something i might think about

35:57despite their best intentions progress is currently pretty slow john's still limited in what he can do

36:04and the delays in the family bathroom aren't helping all jasmine can do is plow on with the one room

36:10that's now largely down to her although she's keen to introduce another generation to the family

36:17trade it's like playing a musical instrument

36:25i was looking online for some kind of bright colored bedside cabinets and i came across something

36:32that was a graffiti bedside cabinet lovely oh that's great it was really expensive

36:44and i thought graffiti i can buy a few cans of spray paint

36:50and we could do something like that to the old bedside cabinet that he's already got

36:56so that's what we did you can do spots or you can do squiggles or whatever you like

37:08is that good i really like it helps very creative are we gonna paint this top yeah

37:16have you ever done graffiti before no good

37:19maybe albie you'll grow up and you'll be as famous as banksy and i'll keep this it'll be worth a fortune

37:34having ordered a load of stuff online in parts recommended by their interior designer

37:39there's a steady flow of packages arriving

37:41and jasmine is keen to keep as much of it a surprise as possible

38:03oh trying to keep everything hidden it's just impossible because there's so much stuff that we

38:11need you know that's here and we need to get it out and do it but because they're they live in this house

38:17so i can't i can't guarantee that they won't walk into one of these rooms at any moment

38:24and see everything that's why i've been trying to hide stuff up there in the top cupboards where they

38:30can't reach mostly everything's still in boxes and just need to find the time the right time to open

38:41everything up and and start building it mama yes

38:52i'm in your room

39:00you all right darling i'm i was saying sticky cheese to astro and i was sitting next to the

39:06boy who's going to be thinking me to know because you want some sticky cheese you got toothpaste all

39:12around your mouth that was close

39:22jasmine and john have a long afternoon of assembling ahead of them but the finishing line is in sight

39:30the

39:33jazz has definitely pulled out of the bag

39:37i would like to take some responsibility but i don't think i can really take any responsibility

39:42all i did was action a few shelves to be put up and curtains to be put up the rest is jazz

39:49it's crunch time albion's room is ready and we're going to show him i am keeping my fingers crossed that

40:02it will be exactly what he requested he wanted rainbow vomit and i'm pretty sure we're going to give that to

40:09him are you ready are you excited do you like your sign on the door shall we right you first

40:23ironically albion's bedroom before we moved in had a lot of very bright colors in there

40:38pink pink purple yellow it was a lot of crazy colors

40:51it's so cool it's gone from being really ghastly colors to being so much more fun and lively

41:08it just feels somewhere really vibrant and uplifting

41:18what do you see that you didn't know was coming

41:22this neon platypus that neon noodles what are your two favorite things on planet earth platypuses and

41:30how do you like your desk and your new chair it's really cool

41:43and what about your bedside table do you think it fits the rainbow vomit theme yes this is basically my

41:53dream bedroom bedroom it has everything i've always wanted like a bean bag chair a lava lamp

42:00i'm glad you love it darling so many things aren't there so many things to look at

42:06the wallpaper is probably my favorite thing in that room it looks absolutely stunning

42:13what about the rug have you even noticed the rug yeah

42:16yeah and if you turn over and lie on your back and look up to the ceiling you might notice something

42:22else i know it's all really cool the biggest job in albion's bedroom was putting in the door

42:31to the balcony that was previously only accessible from the hallway

42:34so you can sit out here listening to the wind chime it's so nice now because albion has his own little

42:53balcony hello astro there he is hello astro

42:59if he wants to sit out there with friend or you know just chill out he can have his own little

43:07outside space that's directly accessible from his bedroom very relaxing out here isn't it

43:14yeah when it's evening you can put on the little lanterns my favorite part i think is the wind chimes

43:24or the table i thought you'd like the wind chimes because it's sort of rainbowy like your bedroom

43:40look at the lava lamp do you have a lava lamp do you have a lava lamp yeah thank you

43:49yes come on it's so rewarding when you've put in so much effort to get something finished at last

44:00it does feel good

44:05i think it's going to be pretty hard slog to get all this done by the summer

44:19that inflammation is not good not just the normal swelling that you would expect from a broken leg
