00:00after over 20 years of helping other people find their dream home overseas
00:08we're actually doing ourselves this house is the first time I've done any
00:17sort of demolition let's get on with it hammer it down that camera out what can
00:27go wrong I'm currently in hospital waiting for the prognosis it's very difficult to keep it
00:36together to be honest I'm ready to throw in the towel basically I'm a professional now
00:44I've just made a big hole but like a house renovation requires a lot of wine oh and then
00:51oh this is the dream this is what we hoped life in Spain would be like
01:01oh never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that something like this would be a reality
01:21having helped hundreds of people find their dream homes on a place in the Sun Jasmine Harmon
01:27has found one of her own at the western end of the Costa del Sol this stretch of coastline is part of
01:37Estepona but they're calling it the new golden mile I don't even know what that means I don't
01:41know what the old golden mile is this is the new golden mile and you say we decided I mean you told
01:47I decided with its Andalithian old town glamorous coastline and the Sierra Burmeja mountains as a
01:55backdrop Estepona is a unique and enchanting place that Jasmine and her family already enjoying having
02:02moved over from London to a rental while they wait to complete on their new home I'm feeling nervous
02:11excited out of my debt but trusting that eventually it's all going to be okay Jasmine and her husband John have been
02:25married for over 15 years having met on set he's a cameraman who's worked with a host of popular property and
02:31food TV shows he is someone I know I can always rely on he will do anything for the people that he loves he is very
02:41driven he's very ambitious and he makes me laugh with his stupid sense of humor John's traveling back and
02:55forth to the UK for jobs there are times during the year where jazz nice super busy and we are like
03:01ships crossing in the night other times the year we're really lucky and we get to hang out as a family
03:06you know both of us are very family orientated people that's why the Spanish culture and lifestyle
03:13suits us actually it's much more family orientated here
03:18their children 11 year old joy and Albion nine have been settling in at a local school joy is a very
03:30very very smart kid I mean I'm learning stuff from her all the time she's a really good friend
03:37Albion is the kind of joker of the family always larking around you could argue he's very similar to me
03:46if you could describe mummy in three words what would they be um stinky kind and old that's me
03:55seeing and experiencing a different life will hopefully show them that they can do anything
04:09and they can go anywhere because the world is their oyster Jasmine and the kids already have EU passports
04:16as Jasmine's mum is from Cyprus which has made the move out to Spain really easy
04:21and once Jasmine started looking at properties it didn't take her long to get that feeling
04:27I think our house has got the most amazing potential I love the character of it I love
04:36the fact that it's got lots of traditional features and I think once we've finished with it it's going to be
04:44phenomenal financially we have stretched ourselves to the absolute maximum in order to be able to buy
04:53the house we've got no plan b there's no option for failure we've got to make it work
05:01this project of a property is the place they've had an offer accepted on we've got an opportunity
05:10to buy something that we can work on we can add value we can make it into a much better home for our
05:19family than anything we could have afforded otherwise that house is all location location location yeah it's
05:27not going to be living the dream in there is it until we've gone through the whole renovation project no
05:33it's a dream location it's not a dream house at the moment while they wait for all the paperwork to go
05:44through Jasmine and John have arranged to show the kids their future home for the first time this is
05:50it kids what do you think is it like your mommy's house hunters tiny house hunters so look this with
06:06the blue paint is our house what's your favorite bit so far Albs the dream don't you like the natural
06:16exposed brick right come on let's go in is it your house of dreams not exactly my house of dreams but
06:25it's split over four levels down in the basement there's a large room with potential a storage room
06:34a bathroom and a garage what do you think Albs
06:40Albie I know you're thinking this screams Spanish dream lifestyle yeah definitely
06:49careful Albie mind you don't trip a very luxurious toilet what did you think of the window there is
07:00none there is there's just a hole in the wall looking at the house again I'm starting to feel quite
07:09daunted I don't know why I think the first time I walked in there something just hit me and I
07:15thought I can make this work I can do this this is going to be amazing it's got so much potential I
07:19could really really see myself there now seeing it for what it really is there is a huge amount to be
07:28done for me this is one of the first priorities yeah the my worry is this looks like a water pipe but
07:38where it's supplying and where it's coming from and why it's dangling over here I have no idea this
07:43isn't even finished I mean the garage door is basically a shower curtain this keeps the thieves at bay
07:50I guess my biggest anxiety is making the right decision for my kids say cheese the worst thing that
08:01can happen with the house renovation is you get something wrong or you have to pay for something
08:05again but when it comes to my children and their future you think you don't want to mess up their
08:12lives I've got this whole weight of responsibility up on the ground floor there's a lounge diner with
08:21doors to a balcony and the kitchen also on this level there's an unfinished bathroom and the bedroom
08:38with ensuite what do you think is going to be in this room so you guys are going to share this room we
08:47haven't decided yet this will be the room daddy's banished to when the renovation goes wrong up on the
08:53first floor are three bedrooms one has an ensuite and its very own Sun Terrace
08:59joy it's gone is he actually throwing up I don't know I mean it is quite gross he will carry most of the
09:19practical things I will carry I will carry family the emotions I'll carry the disused hot tub off the sun
09:26off the roof terrace okay that's a deal you can yeah great don't leave me hanging oh sorry
09:34and that's the bathroom with the very damp ceiling
09:42what are you doing see how damp it is
09:47that went in my mouth I just think it's like 10 years of neglect neglect the skylight does need
09:59ceiling and everything else like there's nothing in this bathroom that would stay
10:04up on the top floor there's a utility room that leads to a roof terrace
10:13it's not bad yeah here I mean you could make so much more of it this is the skylight for that
10:21bathroom where the dumps coming in yeah yeah I mean why have they got the boys well I imagine
10:25they're waiting down that tarpaulin be careful because it's full of dirty water oh god this is
10:36good abode what if you can't take a bit of tarpaulin off the top I don't know if I've got the stomach for
10:40this renovation do you bring your swimming trunks out no imagine in a couple of months time you'll
10:51be picking up sinkers from the bottom of that pool I'm not too sure not too sure it's obviously loads
10:58more work than we ever thought we would be taking on in Spain the kitchen needs ripping out and replacing
11:07there's walls to knock down there are access issues the pool is empty everything is going to need doing
11:18and I've got a screwdriver to do it all with we've got to live in it whilst we're doing the work I think
11:29we need some stairs down from there that's going to be one of the first things we do I don't know if
11:34planning permission you don't agree why don't you should be a priority I mean I'm not even
11:39committed it's going to cost a lot of money I think we need to live in it first see how much of a problem
11:43it is any arguments that we have are usually on quite small things most of the time on the bigger
11:48things like moving to Spain or taking on a renovation project we agree do you think we've made the right
12:00decision yeah I'm saying that with a lot of conviction there is no other option now we have to make it work I
12:09can see the potential I can see the finished product I can see my family there but getting there is going to
12:21take an absolute tonne of work
12:25after delays at every stage possible Jasmine and John have now been in a rental close by for nearly six
12:47months waiting for all the paperwork to go through on their Spanish property purchase usually with most
12:54of my house hunters over the years it's been very straightforward obviously as soon as I put my money
13:00where my mouth is everything's gone wrong and it has been far from straightforward we've had to get over
13:10quite a lot of hurdles to get to this point including various legal things we had to look into with the
13:17property it's an inheritance so we've had to wait for that to be processed it's been quite overwhelming but
13:25we did eventually exchange contracts and we've got a final date by which we have to complete which is
13:32coming up in less than two weeks with their Spanish mortgage offer also expiring around the same time
13:41the pressure is on but eager to get cracking and with John away on a filming trip Jasmine's heading
13:47over to the house for a bit of property therapy I've offered the owner to come and help her to clear
13:54some stuff up but it's just me sounds like you know very kind of me but there is the selfish side of me that
14:02also just wants to make sure we hit our completion date this house since it was built has been in the same
14:10family and sadly now the previous owners passed away we're buying it from their children
14:19the owner she's told me what needs to go what needs to stay what's going to charity so I've got a good
14:30idea of where everything's supposed to go oh my gosh I mean it's still a mess but then what do you do
14:39with all this stuff I mean these huge tables there's a throne I think by the look of it there right let's
14:50get cracking when I was growing up our house was very full very cluttered my mum was a hoarder my mum
15:08still is a hoarder actually I find it quite triggering when I see big piles of stuff that
15:15looks like junk to me I remember at the time being a youngster and thinking that the possessions the
15:22piles of stuff were more important to my mum than I was these ones are for charity oh there we go I've
15:33been getting overwhelmed just packing up my own house and I can barely imagine what it must be
15:39like trying to clear out decades of stuff it's not that the lady is a hoarder or anything it's
15:48generations of accumulated stuff that now needs to find a home or needs to go somewhere
15:58I love my mum very much I think one of the really valuable lessons that I've taken from my mum and her
16:09hoarding is that we shouldn't be wasting as much as we waste if you can recycle donate up cycle things
16:19then that's really great I know that John probably won't agree with me but I do quite like these tiles
16:32and you know I want to keep a bit of that traditional Andalusian style in the house
16:39oh trying to break them I can see how much progress has been made but there's still quite a lot to be
16:55cleared and yeah it's giving me a bit of anxiety to be honest back at the run so Jasmine's keen to
17:09press on with renovation plans the date but with John away making real decisions isn't easy I think part
17:18of the problem is because John and I both work away so much actually trying to come together and decide
17:29what we want to do and thrash it out we just haven't had the opportunity to do that yet it's quite heavy
17:35on my shoulders because I'm feeling like I'm making all the decisions at the moment but I know when he
17:40comes back he might not agree with all of my decisions but you know that's just he's gonna have to suck it up
17:49hi where are you Scotland that does not look like Scotland oh my gosh
18:02when I first met John we became really good friends quite quickly we were kind of thrown together on
18:12location I remember one night we went out with the whole team and some friends and I saw him on the
18:21dance floor and I thought there's a man who knows how to make a fool of himself
18:28anyway how's it going just been talking to the lawyer and also I've had a chat with lots of
18:37different people about the project you know but I do think looking at it from roof to basement
18:43everything's gonna need doing isn't it I don't think we can make any huge decisions until we're
18:48actually in it we know what we need to do the areas where there's damp coming in the roof you just
18:55think we don't need to do that straight away whatever you do if you don't stop the water coming in
19:02so do you think you'll be here when we complete when we move
19:16love you oh as ever just don't know where to go with it I'm like going around in circles in my head
19:38just think I've got decision fatigue
19:44the deadline to complete is fast approaching but with Estepona's Moorish old town on their doorstep
19:54Jasmine and the family have plenty to enjoy in the meantime all the different color flower pots
20:00lots of different colored flowers me and the kids are having a little explore around the old town of
20:08Estepona big part of us moving to Spain was to be able to immerse ourselves in Spanish culture learn
20:14the language integrate with the community the kids really loved exploring the old town they liked throwing
20:26a coin into the fountain and making a wish who knows what they wished for I think it's great for kids to
20:43have that sort of context of having somewhere that's very historical as well as really good fun
20:59kids are so simple but then the most fun bit was finding you know some stairs that had a slide right next to it
21:08we stayed there for ages and they absolutely loved it
21:13all that's missing is a little treat ice cream who's ready to go and get an ice cream
21:28we're all learning Spanish the children are doing really well with their Spanish they understand almost everything
21:55what I would love to see is then feeling a bit more confident about speaking Spanish but I think that will come with time
22:02I could get used to this could you
22:05yes every day I think sometimes as a parent you make decisions that you feel are the best for your family
22:15imagine living by the sea being able to do stuff like whale watching and going to the beach whenever you want
22:24how does that make you feel about living in Spain
22:28I'm happier but all of my very good friends are in England
22:33yeah but we are lucky to live in one of the only places on earth in between the sea and the mountains
22:40I know from my own experiences that living abroad really broadened my horizons it opened up
22:47so many opportunities for me and I want to do that for my kids
22:51and it may not feel like it in the short term but you hope in the long term it will be an amazing opportunity for them
23:02just walking along, where is he? there he is, look! this is just what it's all about
23:15beautiful blue skies
23:19it's lots of love
23:34it's the most annoying box in the history of boxes
23:45there's now just a few days until Jasmine and John have to complete as their mortgage deal runs out
23:52and the lease on their rental expires
23:54but without any confirmation it's going to happen
23:57the pressure is mounting
24:00I don't know if this bag is going to work
24:03these hammers aren't going to work
24:04these hammers aren't going to work
24:06it's like there's a dead body in there
24:13today is Friday
24:15contractually
24:17Monday
24:18is the last day
24:20that we should complete
24:22it's really annoying
24:24because we've not been able to extend our stay in this house
24:28so we've got to be out this weekend
24:31because we're cutting it so fine
24:35it just got too risky
24:37it was too stressful
24:39and too much upheaval for my kids and my family
24:43and so I've rented a temporary holiday let
24:47just to buy us a bit of time
24:49because my lawyer says there's still some outstanding issues
24:52legal issues, documents that haven't been produced yet
24:56John, did you already take that blue box of books down?
25:00it's just here
25:01can you put these in it as well?
25:03with little choice
25:05they start shifting their stuff over to another temporary home
25:08while they wait for completion to happen
25:10John is here for about 48 hours
25:14so he's able to help
25:16which is great
25:17he's carrying all the heavy stuff
25:19is this going to the story?
25:21but there's still a bunch of
25:22yeah
25:23can we write on it what it is
25:25so that we don't
25:27yeah I mean
25:28this is Albie's clothes
25:32can you write it any smaller?
25:35if you put your very focal glasses on you'll be fine
25:40from Kent to the Costa del Sol
25:42in many ways I think Jazz coped with the process of moving to Spain much better than I did
25:54I'm not a great one for change
25:57and now our lives are back in boxes again
26:00and most of the kitchen is in several plastic bags
26:03I can't find anything
26:05and I don't cope that well with that
26:07it's fine
26:09Jazz said he'll be fine so he'll be fine
26:11I'm trying to drill it into him
26:13everything will be alright in the end
26:16everything will be alright in the end
26:18I need to hypnotise him maybe
26:32John?
26:34how are you?
26:35is the lawyer on the phone?
26:37hi Alex
26:38not too bad
26:39just in the throes of packing
26:41how are you?
26:42I've just got John here as well now
26:43well listen I've got some wonderful news for you
26:46tell us!
26:49well the news is that the sellers have provided the bank certificates confirming they don't owe anything left on the mortgage
26:57your lender has accepted that so we can complete on Monday
27:01oh!
27:05that is awesome news, thank you
27:09they've left us at the very last minute but we're going to get you over the line on Monday
27:13amazing, thank you
27:14good stuff
27:15thanks Alex
27:16thank you so much, have a good weekend
27:17have a lovely weekend and good luck with the packing
27:19okay
27:20thanks Alex
27:21see you Monday
27:22take care
27:23bye
27:25awww
27:26I'm so excited
27:27I'm so excited
27:31it's been such a long time coming
27:33but also because
27:35I can just see
27:37an amazing future in that house
27:41what?
27:43probably the reality
27:47it's just
27:48it's just
27:49don't
27:50don't
27:52oh
27:53well done
27:54good news
27:55that we found out that
27:56everything is in place to complete on Monday
27:58whilst I should be super excited
28:01I am
28:02yeah I've still got huge amounts of apprehension
28:04this is the beginning of a very long
28:08slightly uphill road
28:10I don't know if I'm
28:11happy
28:15happy or
28:16really
28:17pooping my pants
28:18but no
28:19it's good
28:20some of my anxiety comes from the frustration that
28:22whilst we've
28:23it's taken six months to get the house across the line
28:26sods law
28:27it now coincides with me being super busy at work
28:29and
28:30and not being in the country
28:31so
28:32when we get the keys
28:33finally
28:34on Monday
28:35I won't be there
28:36John does tend to be
28:38a bit of a worrier
28:39sometimes
28:41he's getting worse in his old age
28:43whereas I'm getting a little bit less
28:45anxious in my old age
28:46I think
28:47maybe it's the HRT
28:48you know
28:49I don't have
28:50seem to have the same sort of anxiety as I used to have
28:54it's probably an overshare
28:56anyway
28:59I'm just off to my dance fitness class
29:09which I do a couple of times a week
29:11it's just such a fun class
29:14great workout
29:16and really nice atmosphere in the group
29:25staying active is really important to me
29:28whenever I've been feeling stressed
29:30or overwhelmed
29:31or
29:32just feeling a bit down
29:34I go to the class
29:36and it makes me feel better
29:38it's like
29:39medicine
29:40for your well-being
29:41and for your mental health
29:43now
29:45now
29:46now
29:47single
29:48single
29:49double
29:50single
29:51double
29:52again
29:53one, two, three
29:54Daniela the instructor
29:55she came here when her children were quite little
29:57you know from another country
29:58I find her really inspiring
30:00she's just somebody who
30:01I think
30:02wow she's got it sussed
30:04she's nailed it
30:05that's what I want to do
30:07that's what I want to do
30:08one, two, three
30:09four sides
30:15I've been so lucky to be able to meet loads of people
30:20it's a very international community around here
30:23I've found it to be really welcoming
30:26and I think wherever you go
30:29you will always find your people
30:32woo
30:33it's not always easy
30:34and I think it takes a while
30:36to settle in
30:37and
30:38it can be a bit awkward
30:40and if you say
30:41oh hello would you like to go out for a drink
30:43you know it's almost a bit like
30:45dating
30:46but
30:47even more uncomfortable
30:48when you're trying to meet
30:49new friends
30:50but you have to put yourself out there
30:52you're never going to meet friends
30:54and become part of a community
30:55if you're just sitting in your house all the time
30:57but I feel like I'm getting there
31:11the next morning
31:12John's heading back to the UK for a job
31:14leaving Jasmine to finish the move
31:16from one holiday let to another
31:19see ya
31:21ah
31:22it's just wrong
31:23see ya
31:25next time I see you
31:26we'll be in a different house
31:28because I just got to go for work
31:29why are you going?
31:30I love you
31:31love you
31:32when John's away
31:34I cope okay
31:35I cope fine
31:37I mean
31:38everything's a bit more chaotic
31:40when it's just me on my own
31:42I can't wait
31:43I can't wait
31:44I can't wait
31:45I can't wait
31:46see you in a bit
31:47I won't be long this time
31:48we'll be back soon
31:49everything runs like clockwork
31:51when I'm not here
31:52as opposed to
31:54when John's not here
31:55everything just
31:56runs
31:57there's no clockwork involved
31:59when it's me actually in charge
32:01oh my god
32:08love you dad
32:09love you
32:10love you
32:14most of the big stuff he's managed to take over already
32:18which is great
32:19and so I've just got to sweep the rest of the house
32:23I keep finding little nooks and crannies that I've forgotten about
32:28things that
32:29I think
32:30oh I must remember to take that
32:31or
32:32oh I've still got to sort out that
32:34and I also get really distracted when I'm packing and looking at things
32:38and reminiscing
32:40and I haven't really got time for that
32:42like I've found this
32:46Jasmine Harmon, My Summer Holiday Diary 1981
32:52today we went to the seaside
32:54I splashed my dress all over
32:57it was my great grandad's birthday
33:01nice little memories

43:36my bedroom
43:38because for me, I just think it's going to be our dream home
43:41so I feel like I'm on a bit of a high, it's almost like when you give birth, you know, you've got all these hormones and emotions and it's just amazing

43:58oh my god
44:01how the heck did they get that jacuzzi off this roof terrace
44:08it's been stressful up until this point, but I think what I've got coming is going to be even worse
44:16I don't want to move into somewhere that's just a dump, where the toilets don't flush, the windows don't open, nothing works
44:33it's like breaking through the channel tunnel, I can see the kitchen
44:40what's this saying about polishing a turd, although a turd with loads of potential
44:47I think I've got all the ways of potential
