00:00hello hello thank you for joining us thank you for having us we're going to give you a special
00:12musical performance shortly before we get into that this film has been a huge hit as i said
00:17netflix's most watched ever how does it feel to be part of such a such a movie such a cultural
00:22moment definitely it means so much to me because um one thing i love about this project is the
00:28first it's like the first animated film uh about korea you know and that's where i'm from and i'm
00:34korean so i was very proud to be korean and it really showed so much of the culture and so many
00:40different ways musical music wise food the history like it's just it's been an honor yeah mark you
00:48never know when anything you're working on whether it's gonna necessarily connect i mean you're it's
00:54amazing to meet people every i mean i did not know ej before this movie and uh so many people
01:00who worked on it and that's always exciting you're making things you care about but to see it have
01:05connected with people and especially something like this that really has grown because of the fans in
01:11such a deep way and it's just been that has meant you know the world i think to everybody involved with
01:17the movie to see something grow so organically and powerfully from something that we we love to make
01:22yeah i can imagine so let's talk golden am i right in thinking that you first received the
01:29instrumental tracks while you're on your way to the dentist yes again it's not marketing so what were
01:35you thinking i need to write this song or i'm terrified about having well we had like a deadline you know
01:41so deadline yeah no pun intended but yeah we had to finish the song but like i received it and
01:47you know the track was just so incredible you know by teddy teddy ito and 24 and yeah the track was just
01:55so had this like bittersweet sound to it that really instantly kind of inspired me to create
02:01a melody but when i was making the melody it was always with the intention of what you know the directors
02:07were kind of giving this guideline of like what they wanted in that scene and so maggie really did
02:12want like a scale kind of going up melodically and also being really hard she said i want a high note
02:18that like the main character like can almost hit you know so and so that was all intentional so when it
02:24came out like you can hear me doing that like um i have the the scratch uh take i did on my voice memo
02:31let's let's let's hear it people heard it yet but um this is a deep dive this is a rare uh
02:39this is first literal take of the melody i did um it's terrible
02:43can you hear it yeah yeah yeah we can yeah we want to hear more
03:01so this is you recording this into your phone on the way to the dentist
03:17in the cab and you could hear him like like recording but yeah that was on the way
03:24people are going to bootlegging this concert in future this is going to end up on nugs.net
03:31yeah yeah absolutely how many sort of lyrical passes did you did you make before you sort of
03:38settled on the the final final version a lot yeah i mean in in in a cool way i mean the the brief of
03:46this is a song that is a pop song because they're the in the movie the biggest pop stars in the world
03:52but also something that kind of every line and every 10 seconds of the song has to do something
03:58different because it's a movie it has to be on story and figuring out i mean this was the like
04:04seventh song that was written for this slot partly because story is changing uh you know a bunch of
04:11the writers earlier talk about how you're finding things in process with the directors and part of
04:17what was i think what really clicked with this version of it aside from yes amazing track and
04:22and you know it's iconic dentist melody um is is everyone had the best sense of what exactly needed
04:31to happen story-wise and it's what they say it's a song about them and so you the first four lines
04:37is my mic going in and out is that what's happening yeah but that's fine yeah
04:41hey but the you know the first four lines are this is nice the first four lines are roomie's
04:48anxiety about um inheriting kind of this role from her mother who was also a hunter um and then
04:55thank you thank you incredible the real hero yeah and then you can see in the animation you have you
05:03have a zoe's backstory live two lives but that's literally because she's pulled between two cultures and
05:08two um homes and uh then you have two lines about mira but really dialing in okay what is the story
05:15you need to hear about these characters in that moment and then in a cool way you get to the bridge
05:19where you're in a pop song the literal pop song they're releasing but then the bridge is roomie alone
05:25singing her feelings like a musical that is not diegetic so it's a weird thing where you have the
05:33song in universe that then the bridge is actually her singing something that is not a part of the song
05:38she sings i'll be i will be shining earlier in the track she's singing now i'm shining but when it's
05:45herself it's i'll be shining because it's not really yet she's lying she's hiding even as she's
05:50singing it and getting that right took a lot of passes and this concept of duality is just so layered
05:55within the whole film and also you know and just in general like the song itself is you know if you
06:01just hear it as a pop song if you haven't seen the film it's a great pop song but if you watch the film
06:05it has a completely different meaning like in the bridge again i'm done hiding and she's just hiding
06:10herself you know it's just you see the depth of the song and the layering and the you know what the
06:15song really means when you watch the film so that's what's really cool which comes from maggie and chris
06:19and this incredible incredible story they were telling and actually i mean yeah we kind of for we
06:25our little performance portion we want we wanted to share kind of one version of the bridge uh before
06:32yeah sure tell us explain us explain to us what the what you're going to play to us and how it differs
06:37from what we see in the movie well this this is just a pass so this was one of the first ones we did
06:42it's a little bit longer um because uh one thing that's amazing is the amount of information that
06:48animation can give you along with the song so you're calibrating in terms of the story how much do you
06:53need to hear in the song versus how much can be shown at the same time and so this is a version
06:57that said a little bit more almost like more theatery that this kind of shows um our collaboration
07:04of like bringing theater and pop and how it we had to keep going back and forth to make a good balance
07:09so it works again in the real world as a pop song but also in the film yeah yeah like bringing a lyric
07:16and EJ would be like no no that's lame can we make it more simple and finally yeah so uh great you just
07:25want to sing there so yeah early version it's like we are hunters voice is strong that's who we're meant
07:37to be just hide away a few more days then then i'll be free
07:46waited so long to break these walls out to wake up and feel like me put these patterns all in the past now
07:58and finally live like a girl they all see not covering the poison that sinked on my skin
08:06not wondering if some days the darkness would win if i threw all the doubt and somehow i survived
08:15our voices of power and now it's all time
08:19and then maggie was like the police yeah just like that's too long that's a little too long
08:33it's very musical we love musicals by the way but you know for this you know we wanted it to be more
08:38pop right so it's specific like you know covering the poisonous inked on my it's also lit you literally
08:43are seeing that you don't need to hear it song and so it landed so the balance was like you know
08:48what do we cut right and so you hear like we are hunters in the beginning the mantra not the
08:55melody of the pre but we thought that was like a very important melody you hear throughout the whole
08:59score too so we wanted that to come later to link you know that's why you hear something else you'll
09:06hear yeah in this version yeah yeah because the thing that she tells herself is we are hunters voice
09:11is strong that's the mantra she's been taught from a kid so we knew we wanted to be somewhere here
09:15in that version is the beginning of the bridge um and it ends a different way but
09:18did you record all of these or this is just you trying to get it right um oh did i record
09:24yes because i also vocal produce so i had to do all these different takes all the harmonies
09:31wow yeah so um but yeah and then so we would put it in the second half to link it into the chorus
09:37as you will hear that's where it landed yeah so it's uh you guys want to sing along like you can
09:43totally feel free um so yeah wait it's so long to break these walls down to wake up and feel like me
09:57put these patterns all in the past now and finally live like the girl they all see
10:05no more hiding i'll be shining like i'm gonna be
10:13but yeah you can hear um it shows off roomie's crazy range roomie's crazy range yeah because that's
10:32the trick of the song too is you're supposed to hear it that that really high note in the first
10:36half because that's the single they're releasing it's pre-recorded but in the moment she's struggling
10:41with her voice so literally you know knowing we have to write a song where literally struggling
10:45yeah yeah yeah like it's it's she can't sing it by the second half of the song in the movie so where
10:51the placement is you get to hear it and then when it comes to the end she can't do it and then so
10:55in the clip you saw she's finally able to do it at the end and that's not the song that steals the
11:00whole movie yeah it's like her kind of desperation to reach this impossible note um but yeah that's
11:08kind of like what's intentional throughout the whole film well look it's an incredible look behind
11:12the curtain uh it's fantastic um before you go uh they just announced the sequel or dated the sequel
11:18have you guys have you got any dentist appointments coming up you know what yeah i do actually have
11:24cavities
11:25somebody's gonna be making some voice notes no it was for gold filling the first time oh i'm not
11:33even it is meant to be sorry so another i know but yeah ej mark sonnenblick everybody
11:39thank you so much
11:43thank you so much
