01:00you were me
01:01wish that you were me bet you wish that you were me must be tough to keep me in a
01:09past life
01:10when you wake up and see me in the headlines ten times a month and that's just in my downtime
01:18no it's true you'd kill to have it too I bet you wish that you could have even half of
01:26my head
01:27it's making you sick I got it all with the flick of my wrist you can't resist trying to play
01:34but I'm still
01:35gonna win and I know you're watching so go ahead read my lips baby I know you're so obsessed see
01:43me in your dreams
01:44singing this song it's in your head when you go to sleep you don't wish that you were me bet
01:51you wish that you were me
01:53wish that you were me bet you wish that you were me
01:59so tell me about this is the first time the three of you all together have written a song
02:07talk about that yeah it was the first time working I've worked with Michael several times on my own
02:14projects and we got this team together when the showrunner of the of only murders John Hoffman
02:22reached out and said hey I would love for you to write a song he was looking for something that
02:27was a little sassy um a kind of a song a kind of rubbing um Selena's character Mabel her nerves
02:36a
02:36little bit so we're like okay how can we make a song that gets on her nerves so thus wish
02:42you were
02:42me came to fruition so tell us for those who who haven't seen the the episodes the bat the story
02:50set up with the song basically Beanie Feldstein's character is an old friend of Mabel's who's a who's a pop
02:58singer who her she goes by she used to she used to go by Athena but now she's the the
03:05and this song is
03:10significantly more popular than Mabel's podcast right and so but but tell us tell us more about that like
03:19this has got a great disco Friday night vibe how did you how did you settle on that yeah I
03:26mean we
03:26we were asked to write this song that would catapult fee to the pop charts like to the top of
03:33the charts
03:34um so of course we went like very much within the pop zeitgeist in 2025 and went like very like
03:39disco
03:39pop funk uh and I think it really works for the song but like writing this kind of song I
03:46think
03:46um I mean my my pop brain is on but I think I I think of it a little more
03:52like a theater kid because
03:53I'm of course a theater kid um so I think of it kind of like a charm song it's like
03:58this song is meant
04:00to sort of add levity to the series and also introduce us to this ridiculous character um whose
04:06like only purpose is to be the bane of Mabel's existence for the season um yeah it was like so
04:14fun to write yeah we had a great time writing it and I think it was interesting writing specifically
04:20for the character and we didn't know who was playing the character at the time or how it would
04:24actually fully develop we just knew like the key points of the plot so it was more like what how
04:30can
04:30we make a song that's hypothetically could be like a hip-hop song and also lyrically kind of jab at
04:37selena's character in a way that's not so obvious but it's just like fun in the sense of the show
04:43and
04:43like you know it's kind of an inside joke now when beanie came aboard how did that how did that
04:48change
04:49the song well I think we heard rumblings that beanie was being considered at the time that we wrote it
04:55so we sort of had her in mind but not really um and I what once she was confirmed um
05:01I went out to
05:03New York and and tracked it with her uh and it was the easiest session I've done I mean it
05:09was so
05:10lovely working with her and John Hoffman was there as well and I mean it's just like it it is
05:16the
05:16loveliest show to work on everybody is just so amazing did you know that the song would become
05:24bigger like would just become sort of this central almost like a theme throughout multiple episodes
05:30did you know that ahead of time not really I know we knew it would be part of the overall
05:35plot for
05:36the season but I didn't realize how many episodes it would be in and how much of a cult following
05:40the
05:40song would end up garnering like there's been so many comments on you know various youtube videos and
05:45I've gotten like personal messages on instagram being like when is this song coming out like we love
05:49this song like so many of the fans of the show have really grasped onto this song which has been
05:54really lovely to see and I don't think I mean I didn't expect that at least when we wrote it
05:59yeah
05:59I'll post like a selfie on instagram and some random person is like when's this song coming out
06:04I don't know I was gonna say have you been in a mall and heard it yet
06:11no
06:15short answer but oh my gosh it was so fun to hear Sophie sing it um you know it's with
06:21this amazing
06:22amazing all these wonderfully talented musicians I just loved what Sid was saying that the human
06:28touch just to everything is magical and just to see anyway bro thank you fantastic wow yeah I also want
06:37to
06:37give a shout out to uh my incredible orchestrator friend who helped me put take this from the
06:44fictional pop charts in only murders in the building to like a 60 piece orchestra ching cheng who's in
06:49the audience or oh yeah there she is ching chen is amazing and turned this arrangement around with
06:56me in like 36 hours amazing are the three of you collaborating again we should yeah yeah we should
07:06that's the only thing we've done so far yeah Michael you we both have worked with Michael because
07:11Michael's a really just amazing pop producer songwriter and um yeah so I'm really glad that
07:19they were up for it it was a pretty quick turnaround John John Hoffman's become one of a dear friends
07:25of
07:25mine and it's fun to see Sid because Sid also did the theme song for only murders in the building
07:30so see him just killing it but um yeah just grateful to the the fans of the show and to
07:38John for
07:38including us in this wonderful show any notes from Selena did she say I like that any notes um I
07:48don't you
07:48know John did show me just a fun little clip of all the cast and people back behind the scenes
07:54all singing
07:55the song so it was like a little montage of everybody and that was a little fun surprise um
08:01I I'll have to ask him to so I can show it to y'all so it's pretty fun to
08:05see everybody just singing
08:05wish you'd you remember me yeah before we go share with us the impact that American Idol had on your
08:14career um you you correct me you rank second yeah in the seventh season yeah that's a big deal yeah
08:22that
08:22was 18 years ago that I was on that so it's pretty well so good memory um it was amazing
08:28it yeah
08:29actually the way that John Hoffman of Only Murders who created the show with Steve Martin um he saw me
08:37on the masked singer uh when I was on there and it made it caused him to reach out to
08:42me um and we'd
08:43just become really good buddies he uh um so yeah it's American Idol led me to doing a lot
08:51you know since I was just a kid in high school at the time I didn't know if I wanted
08:55to be
08:56become a pop singer um but here I am 18 years later and I'm really grateful that I still get
09:02to do cool things like this with such wonderful talented people and and just for people to come
09:08up to me still and say oh my gosh like my family would we would gather around the tv and
09:13watch you and
09:14that was a moment we had together and um it was just like a moment it was the social media
09:20of the
09:20time because Instagram and Twitter and all that didn't exist yet so American Idol was the way people
09:26would connect with each other so and t i guess that's what the power of tv shows can be
09:34Michael Blum, Sophie Rose, David Archuleta, the co-writers of Wish That You Were Me from Hulu's
09:41Only Murders in the Building. Thank you.
