02:02It's a contemporary show, but then you have the Addams family
02:04who don't seem to exist in time.
02:07Catherine Zeta-Jones still doesn't age like in real life.
02:11And there was also just a sane asylum,
02:14and you've got Monster Mom finding monster's son,
02:16and then you've got werewolves.
02:18So it was just a chance to just do more
02:20and be really just unabashedly thematic.
02:24I know this is a TV music concert.
02:27I don't know what TV music is right now
02:30because so much of what we've heard tonight
02:32is just as cinematic as music gets.
02:36And that's certainly what Wednesday has been for me,
02:39and it's just a thrill to get to do it
02:41because, to answer your question,
02:43season two was more cinematic than season one,
02:45and so getting to be tuneful and use the orchestra like that
02:48is just kind of a dream come true.
02:51Harpsichord. It's not Addams Family without harpsichord.
02:53Right.
02:54But when do you decide to use it, and how do you use it?
02:59You know, it's part of their sound,
03:04and it's part of what keeps the Addams Family timeless.
03:07And so it's sort of like if it feels like we're...
03:13It's a great sound to throw in to remind us we're there.
03:17If there's strings happening or whatever,
03:20it's something that you can put over strings
03:22that automatically says, oh, I recognize this.
03:25Even if I don't know what instrument that is,
03:27that feels like this universe.
03:29And so it's just sort of an instinct thing.
03:32This feels like a good place to use the harpsichord,
03:34which is always an instrument that I hated my entire life.
03:39And here I am.
03:41Any references that you drew inspirations from?
03:48I think that there were things to not draw inspiration from.
03:53For example, we're not trying to be Harry Potter, right?
03:57One of the very first things that Tim said when we started was,
04:01don't make this funny.
04:03Like, it's a funny show,
04:04and I laugh out loud every time I start an episode.
04:09But Tim Burton, I don't know if I said it,
04:12he was very serious about do not play funny music.
04:17Play them serious the same way that Jenna Ortega plays it,
04:20and she's hilarious,
04:21but that makes it funnier if it's darker, heavier, more serious.
04:26So it was don't try to be funny.
04:29We're not making magic here.
04:31Just try to keep it grounded in that sort of macabre fantasy world.
04:40Can you share with us one of your favorite moments in the series
04:44where the score made all the difference?
04:50Well, I'm glad you asked where the score made all the difference.
04:54Where do I start?
04:55My favorite character in the show is Enid.
04:57I think she's the most overtly emotional,
05:00and she's the one who kind of is what you see is what you get.
05:05And at that moment, which I think we did in this,
05:08I wasn't watching the picture,
05:09but where she transforms to a werewolf,
05:12she knows that if she does that,
05:14that there's a chance that she's not coming back.
05:16But she knows that she has to do that to save Wednesday.
05:20And so she doesn't just do it, she invites it in,
05:24essentially sacrificing herself for that.
05:25So that was one of my favorite moments,
05:26and you get to have the French horns just kind of go crazy with her tune on that
05:31because she's, again, more of a quirky person.
05:34But to be big and cinematic with her kind of sacrifice on that moment.
05:38And just like everybody else,
05:39I need to take a second to acknowledge that none of this would have worked
05:42without this orchestra and Nikki.
05:45And I acknowledge some of the soloists.
05:48I wanted to acknowledge all of them.
05:49Thank you so much.
05:52Really, I warned them when I got there.
05:54It's like, I don't belong on this podium.
05:56But as a kid, I thought conductor would be a great job.
06:00I really wanted to drive trains.
06:03This was the train driving me.
06:05So thank you, everybody.
06:07Can you share with us anything about season three?
06:10Have you started composing?
06:13Any hints of...
06:15Music is being made.
06:16Is there a new instrument?
06:18Music is being made.
06:23I can't, you know.
06:25It's such a big thing that people love the show so much,
06:28which is so gratifying.
06:30And there are going to be some fun surprises.
06:33Fester's theme.
06:34It's already there.
06:35And I've got to give credit to my wife, who's here, Malia.
06:39One of the things, like, I was trying to write his theme for Fester,
06:41and she's like, Uncle Fester, Uncle Fester.
06:46That's part of what became his theme.
06:50Chris Bacon.
06:52Netflix is Wednesday.
