00:05Come in.
00:06Hey.
00:07What's up?
00:08Oh, just going through some of my scrapbooks.
00:10Are you pulling stuff for the Girls Next Door book?
00:13Yep.
00:14I've always wanted to do a cute little book done by Bridget,
00:17Kendra, and I kind of summarizing Girls Next Door and
00:20everything.
00:21So we finally get the opportunity to do that.
00:23It's hard.
00:24There's so many.
00:25There's too much.
00:26I have a few things I wanted to show you so we don't
00:29overlap.
00:30All three of us have to do a lot to contribute to the book.
00:32We all have to come up with pictures for it.
00:34Style tips, makeup tips, favorite recipes.
00:37So we'll see how it goes.
00:39I brought some pictures of like my favorite outfits,
00:41my peacock outfit.
00:43I put this as my favorite t-shirt for best outfits.
00:46What did you find for worst dressed?
00:49You're going to laugh when you see it.
00:53Ta-da!
00:55Oh my God.
00:56That's a good suggestion.
00:57Funny.
00:59Hey, what's up?
01:00What are you guys doing?
01:01You guys looking at pictures?
01:02Pulling the pictures for the book.
01:03Yeah.
01:04Did you pull any?
01:05She's sans pictures.
01:06You definitely have to be very organized to be a scrapbooker.
01:18And I'm not organized at all.
01:19You know, I have pictures all over my room.
01:21Wait.
01:22How fun.
01:23I remember.
01:24This is Nicole Richie's birthday party.
01:27How fun.
01:28I forgot about this night.
01:30It was really fun.
01:32Come in.
01:34Hi, honey.
01:36How fun.
01:37How fun.
01:39I'm on a date.
01:40We are trying to find good pictures for the Girls Next Door books.
01:44So we're going through all Bridget's old scrapbooks.
01:46And we are finding some funny stuff.
01:49Scrapbooking has become so popular with so many people.
01:54But you're talking about the number one scrapbooker of all time is me.
01:59How many do you have now?
02:01Well, when I bring it up to date, it'll be over 2,000.
02:04Hef has thousands of scrapbooks.
02:07He's a scrapbooking freak.
02:09And he's constantly working on it.
02:12He wants to document every aspect of his life.
02:15Would you like to see the scrapbook room?
02:17Yeah.
02:18Let's do it.
02:19Let's go up there.
02:20Let's do it.
02:21It'll be my pleasure.
02:22It'll be a walk down memory lane for me.
02:25Aww.
02:26That's what we'll do.
02:27Come on to my house, my house.
02:30I'm gonna give you candy.
02:34Come on to my house, my house.
02:37I'm gonna give you figs and dits and grips and kicks.
02:43Hey!
02:44Come on to my house, my house, come on.
02:46How often do you look at the really old ones?
02:52I have not looked at the old ones in a very long time.
02:56That's why I say, you know, this is like going back to the old neighborhood in Chicago for me.
03:01Hef loves nostalgia, tradition, and while I think those are two factors that play into his love of scrapbooking,
03:08I think the bigger picture is if you had a life like Hef's, you would want to document it too.
03:14It's a kick for me.
03:16Scrapbook central.
03:18Wow.
03:19So, uh, where do we start?
03:21Well, we start at the beginning, sort of, to begin with.
03:25I'm going all the way back to my parents.
03:27Wow.
03:28There's my mother.
03:29There's my dad.
03:30Back in Nebraska, 1914, 1915.
03:33Wow.
03:34And who is that little guy?
03:35Aww.
03:36So pretty.
03:37Who is it?
03:38It's me.
03:39Who would it be?
03:40I'm just kidding.
03:41Ray, I'm hugging my brother.
03:43Aww.
03:44Who would have thought?
03:45Like, you would have been, you would be Hugh Hefner.
03:48Like, who would have, that's crazy.
03:51I really, really enjoyed seeing pictures from his childhood.
03:55I just, I don't know, I saw in those pictures in his eyes that he knew, he knew where he was going to be.
04:01Very good.
04:02Now, here's the little blonde that I had a crush on in fourth grade.
04:05Aww.
04:06Audrey Zimmerman.
04:07I can't believe you remember her name.
04:09That's crazy.
04:10Oh, I remember.
04:11I remember them all.
04:12Wow.
04:13I don't remember anything.
04:14I don't either.
04:15And I'm like, 42.
04:16I'm like, what the hell?
04:17To begin with, it was just a comic book.
04:19Aww.
04:20See?
04:21And it's school days.
04:22G-A-Z-E.
04:23So, to begin with, it was all comics.
04:25Wow.
04:26Those are pretty detailed.
04:27Wow.
04:28Oh, yes.
04:29I colored it, spent a lot of time with it.
04:30You did all this?
04:31Oh, yes.
04:32Wow.
04:33I cannot draw to save my life.
04:34Oh, yes.
04:35This is some of the stuff that influenced me.
04:37This is called the World's Fair, 1933-34.
04:41Flash Gordon, particularly.
04:43The baby-faced blonde.
04:44Heroine in the cereal.
04:45I always thought that Heff's love of blondes came from his love of the movies.
04:49But his love of blondes actually started from a fictional character.
04:52So, go figure.
04:53The guy who writes comic books as a kid falls in love with a fictional blonde.
04:58This was in my 16th summer.
05:02I met Betty Conklin.
05:03Wow, she's beautiful.
05:05We were going into our junior year.
05:07I was a soda jerk in the drug store.
05:09And he came in and chatted.
05:12It was fun.
05:13I never knew that Heff had a crush on me.
05:16He was a good buddy as far as I was concerned.
05:18Heff tells me I was quite an influence and that surprised me at no end.
05:22I felt flattered, terribly flattered, but I didn't see how that ever could be true.
05:28I did a little short horror movie and I cast, obviously, Betty in the female lead and my best buddy is the monster.
05:39This is the guy with one of my buddies, Bob Hoagland, that Betty invited to the hayride instead of me.
05:45What's a hayride?
05:47Everybody gets into a wagon of hay drawn by horses and just drives around through the night.
05:56You know, and you...
05:58You fuck?
05:59Neck with your girlfriend.
06:00No, you don't fuck.
06:01Neck with your girlfriend.
06:02These were very innocent times.
06:03Oh, okay.
06:04You didn't even think about that.
06:05So wait, so she invited him instead?
06:07She invited him instead of me.
06:09Oh, what a hoe.
06:10And I was crushed by it.
06:11Ew.
06:12Crushed.
06:13So I reinvented myself and I became Hep Hep.
06:16Hep?
06:17Hep.
06:18Before hip there was Hep.
06:19Hep.
06:20Okay.
06:21School.
06:22School days.
06:24The Adventures of Goo Heifer.
06:26Hiya, Betty.
06:27Everything all set for the party at your house tonight?
06:30Sure is.
06:31Don't forget to bring your records.
06:33You think pairing up Janie with Hoggy will work?
06:36Of course it will.
06:38Janie's a sharp kid.
06:39But what about Mopey?
06:41I'm getting another gal for him.
06:43Lois.
06:44Jeeps!
06:45If it works, all my problems are solved.
06:47I know it will, Goo.
06:49I know it will.
06:50I don't know if you can see this, but here I am defending our country.
06:54Ooh.
06:55You look hot in uniform.
06:56And this is Millie, the girl that I later married.
07:00Another brunette.
07:01I fell in love with her, you know, while I was away in service.
07:04It was a wartime relationship.
07:06Oh, that's a cute picture.
07:09Oh.
07:10This was the apartment.
07:13Here I am.
07:14Painting the walls.
07:15Sweating away.
07:16Here it is where I started the magazine.
07:19Hef's first wife was with Hef when he started the magazine, and they have two great kids together.
07:24There's Christy.
07:25Christy.
07:26Wow.
07:27At age one.
07:28Typing on.
07:29Daddy's typewriter.
07:30Wow.
07:31She already knew what she was going to be doing.
07:32And here I am actually talking about creating the magazine.
07:36I had no money, but I just started making plans for the magazine.
07:40There you are, working.
07:41Working hard.
07:42There I am.
07:43At the typewriter.
07:44You didn't know that you were going to put girls in there, right?
07:48Right at first, right?
07:49You didn't know that?
07:50Or did you?
07:51Oh, yeah.
07:52Sure.
07:53Wow.
07:54And there we are.
07:55Amazing.
07:56For a tissue.
07:57There she is.
07:58There she is.
07:59For a tissue.
08:00Hef bought the original Marilyn pictures for $600.
08:05Small price to pay.
08:07That was like right at the beginning of her career too, right?
08:10Yes.
08:11It was the year in which she became a star.
08:13Wow.
08:14I think there wouldn't be a Playboy without the Marilyn Monroe picture.
08:16I think that was what really made a splash and really gave the magazine publicity when
08:20it first needed it.
08:21I love this.
08:22I've never done this with anybody else, male or female.
08:25Wow.
08:26It means a lot.
08:27Hef has definitely set himself apart from all the rest.
08:31He's made something from nothing and he's changed the world because of it.
08:37Okay.
08:38There's you.
08:39Here I am with my first car after I started the magazine.
08:43I bought a Cadillac convertible with fins.
08:46You drove that?
08:47Pretty hot.
08:48That big, big car?
08:49Big, big car.
08:50That's hot.
08:51This was the cover.
08:54It created the impression of the rabbit without the rabbit.
08:56But how'd you do that?
08:58Just braid her that way.
08:59Just makeup?
09:00Yeah, makeup.
09:01Oh, okay.
09:02That's all.
09:03Put her under a sun lamp.
09:04Put a rabbit on her.
09:05Now, here's the semi-foam.
09:07The guy out of focus in the background in the tuxedo is me.
09:10Wow.
09:11Janet Pilgrim was one of the first Playmates and she also worked for the magazine, so she
09:15was a shoo-in.
09:16Did you guys end up dating or anything?
09:18Oh, yes.
09:19Oh, yeah?
09:20Oh, yes.
09:21It caused the sensation.
09:22So pretty.
09:23Yeah.
09:24Okay, now.
09:25That's great.
09:26Winnie.
09:27Where you going, Lou?
09:28Oh, Winnie.
09:29Are you keeping tabs on yourself?
09:31Okay.
09:32When we had our fifth anniversary, I met Joyce.
09:35I was going to say, is that Joyce?
09:37That's Joyce?
09:38Joyce Nazari.
09:39What?
09:40Wow.
09:41Hef met Joyce in Miami when he was overseeing a pictorial film
09:45for Playboy.
09:46She works here at the mansion, and she was just absolutely beautiful.
09:51I met him when I was 17.
09:53I had never heard of Playboy magazine at that point, and so I didn't have any idea who
09:58he was.
09:59A few months later, I posed for the July 58 cover, and then that ran on into both a romance
10:05and me being a December playmate.
10:08It was an exciting time for me.
10:10Hef keeps in contact with all his ex-girlfriends, so it's not really weird to have Joyce in the office
10:14at all.
10:15Every once in a while, though, I start to think about it, and I'm like, wow.
10:18Joyce used to be like one of us.
10:21The beginning of 1960, I got the Chicago mansion and opened the first Playboy club.
10:28The Chicago mansion had like 80 rooms, and they had a fireman's pole, and knights in
10:33shining armors, and a giant ballroom, and a pool indoors, and there was a window where
10:38you could watch people swim by.
10:40It was a total playground.
10:42In 1966, I went to London to open the Playboy club casino, and London in 1966 was the center
10:50of everything.
10:51And I saw the future in terms of the sexual revolution that I'd been making a case for
10:55in the editorial series.
10:57So, as soon as I came back to Chicago in 1968, I started doing a new television show called
11:04Playboy After Dark, and that's where I met Barbie.
11:07Barbie.
11:08Well, good evening.
11:09I'm your host, Hugh Hefner.
11:10Welcome to the party.
11:11This is my flame.
11:12I'm Barbie Benton.
11:13Playboy After Dark is a show that makes it appear that Hef is having a party, and come
11:29on over.
11:30I was hired to be atmosphere, but Hef took a liking to me and asked me to say a few words,
11:40and he told me that if I did, I would get $200 more for the day's work.
11:45I was with Hef for about eight and a half years.
11:49I was never a playmate.
11:51I was never a bunny.
11:53I was just a girlfriend.
11:56Was Barbie always the same?
11:59Was she always the same?
12:00Did she always have the same personality?
12:01She had not changed that much.
12:02Are you kidding?
12:03No.
12:04Oh.
12:05Wait, wait.
12:06You're going too fast here.
12:07Okay.
12:08What is that?
12:09That's the plane.
12:10That's the airplane.
12:11There we go.
12:12Playboy's Airplane.
12:13Yeah.
12:14Airborne Mansion.
12:15Welcome to the Big Bunny.
12:16It was really like an apartment.
12:17It was a stretched DC-9.
12:18Oh, my God.
12:19Wow.
12:20And there was a separate entrance in the back that looked at the bedroom.
12:33Wow.
12:34How excited were you when you found out you were getting a plane?
12:36It's crazy.
12:37I thought it was pretty cool.
12:38Yeah.
12:39It was particularly cool when I decided to paint it all black.
12:42Wow.
12:43And call it the Big Bunny.
12:45Did you have the womb chair in there?
12:47No.
12:48No.
12:49But there was a whole ensemble there for video.
12:52And this was at a time in which home video was not that common.
12:57I thought everybody down on land was like, oh, my God.
13:04Playboy, play.
13:05Oh, yeah.
13:06That was the first flight from Chicago to New York.
13:07So cool.
13:08Oh, look at the bunny outfits.
13:09Cute.
13:10Were the jet bunnies actual bunnies?
13:12Yes, they were.
13:13Or were they trained airlines?
13:14They were real bunnies and also trained as airline hostesses.
13:17Wow.
13:18Yeah.
13:19Now, 1971.
13:20Hmm.
13:21What happened that year?
13:24I bought a little house.
13:26A little house called Playboy Mansion West.
13:30Aww.
13:31I was actually not looking for a house when I found that one.
13:35But when I saw it, I knew it was the perfect house for him.
13:38I asked him to fly to L.A. and take a look at it.
13:42And when he saw it, he said it was too small.
13:46Wow.
13:47Excellent.
13:48Here's the way it looked before I got it.
13:51Wow.
13:52Here they are building the...
13:54Oh, the grotto?
13:55The grotto and the pool.
13:56How cool is that?
13:58When Hef bought the mansion, there was no tennis court, no pool, no nothing.
14:01So that provided him with the opportunity to design his own.
14:04And he came up with the concept for the pool and the grotto.
14:07188.
14:09I was dating Barbie and then I met a blonde.
14:14Oh, and it starts.
14:16A blonde who looked just like the girl in the Flash Gordon serial.
14:20That was Karen Christie from Texas.
14:22Wow.
14:23So cute.
14:24And where is she now?
14:25She's married and living in Texas.
14:27Oh!
14:29Fantastic.
14:30When did dating multiple girlfriends start?
14:32Well...
14:33I think...
14:34I think...
14:35Well...
14:36I think...
14:37322.
14:39Sandra Theodore.
14:41I loved getting to know Hef throughout all the years and getting to see all the girls
14:45that he was with.
14:46Because without those girls, we wouldn't be here today.
14:49Now we are into 1977.
14:53Sandra and her little dog.
14:55I was a playmate in July of 1977.
15:02And I had met Hef in August of 1976.
15:06So it took a little... about a year for me to get my clothes off.
15:11See, I met him when I was just 19 and almost 20.
15:17And he was 50.
15:18He had just turned 50.
15:19When he approached me, I was so flabbergasted that the whole thing is a dream.
15:25You know the saying, you love at first sight?
15:28It really was.
15:29It was enchantment at first sight.
15:32With Hef, we weren't just the two of us right away at all.
15:36You know, I knew...
15:37He explained his lifestyle and it was accepted or hit the highway.
15:42So I thought, well, that's cool.
15:44That's why the 70s were so much fun.
15:47It was just a real special time.
15:53Hef used to always have all kinds of crazy themed parties in the 70s.
15:57A lot of naked women and celebrities and crazy stuff.
16:01Sandra was there for a really fun period in Hef's life.
16:04And I was kind of thinking of her as my 70s counterpart.
16:08How about 8.56?
16:11You're gonna love this party.
16:13Getting lost back here.
16:15Maybe outside the...
16:17Outside the...
16:18Okay.
16:19Oh, no!
16:21Holly's favorite one.
16:25I would wear a way hotter dress.
16:27Oh, yeah.
16:28I met Kimberly.
16:29And did the unthinkable.
16:32And got married again.
16:35Kimberly is Hef's second wife and she was a playmate and a playmate of the year.
16:40And she actually lives right next door.
16:43And they have two kids together and they're still very friendly as well.
16:48And then...
16:50After that...
16:51Boy, that was the most...
16:53That was bad.
16:54That was bad.
16:55No.
16:57There's so many things I learned about Hef, but I think one thing I learned is that...
17:03Marriage doesn't work out for him.
17:05Want me to get that one?
17:07Mm-hmm.
17:08And what's the...
17:09What's the next one?
17:10The next one after that is...
17:11In 1668.
17:12And here we are, coming out of the marriage, Sandy, Mandy, and Brandy.
17:17So how did you meet Brandy and all of them?
17:19I met them both at clubs.
17:20I went to a club called the Opium Den and ran into Brandy.
17:25And we hit it off right away.
17:27And within about two weeks after that, I ran into the twins.
17:30After Hef was married a second time, he just started dating a ton of girls all at once.
17:39The party posse.
17:41More blondes than we can count.
17:45More blondes...
17:46Wow.
17:47...than there are in heaven.
17:49Aww.
17:52That's how tan I was.
17:54Yeah, wow.
17:55I know.
17:56Cute.
17:57Here we are.
17:58I was definitely part of the party posse.
18:02Yeah, and I got rid of a lot of them.
18:08Is that the next one?
18:09Yeah.
18:10Oh, very good.
18:11Okay, good girl.
18:13Well, this is Seven Girlfriends and this is Holly Bird.
18:16Aww.
18:17Bird.
18:18Hef has influenced my life in almost every way.
18:20He's really cared about me and done a lot for me and provided me with all these great opportunities
18:25and really allowed me to become the person I was always meant to be.
18:28Oh, Holly!
18:30Haha.
18:31Look at that shirt.
18:32Look at that shirt.
18:33Ah.
18:35Topless wheelie.
18:36Oh, I'm wearing my Darla Hood shirt.
18:43This year is the year I came and tested.
18:46I first met Hef when I came to test for Playmate right here at the mansion and I was so nervous
18:58and so scared to meet him I could barely talk and when he did come over and say hi to me I
19:02just thought it was the best thing ever. That's a bright, we're all really bright, whoa you're
19:08right. Hef has scrapbooks for all the different eras in his life and some of them there's just
19:13a few scrapbooks on some of them there's a bigger section but the section of post marriage and having
19:19the girlfriends is quite a big section and we're a large part of that. Hef meets Canberra. I guess my
19:33best memory of being here at the mansion so far is definitely the first night I met Hef when I was
19:39body painted. That's definitely the most special special moment. That night like Hef and I we did
19:44not take our eyes off of each other and it's just so magical and it was just like the first night to
19:49my new life. Ew! This guy made me look like a drag queen. I never had my makeup done before this picture
19:58so I didn't know what to think. Well at work you look good enough though I thought. All he sees is beauty.
20:03My favorite babies. What did I say? Hef's terrific trio. Like put it in writing. As one of Hef's girlfriends
20:14it seems oddly comfortable to talk about all his ex-girlfriends. I feel like we all have some
20:20special bond and that we all know that Hef's a good guy and you're always going to be friends with
20:26them. Once you have a relationship with Hef like this it doesn't end. It's forever. Look how white my
20:32hair was. Everybody had white hair. I think every girlfriend in Hef's life has definitely influenced
20:38him but none of them can compare to us three. I love that outfit Holly. Oh me too. Oh yeah very beautiful.
20:48Really beautiful. It's kind of crazy to be in Hef's scrapbooks. You see all the things he's done
20:52throughout his life and you just feel a connection with everybody else who's passed through his life
20:58because we're all part of that library. And there we are. Look how tan we all are. Damn.
21:11Okay guys. Done. And here we are. Back to the present. That's what I call scrapbooking.
21:25Hey. Hey girlfriend. So guess what I have. What? Our book. I've not seen this yet. Oh my god.
21:42I love this cover. Oh my god it's so cute. That's so cute. Oh my god. Look at it. When Kendra and I saw one of the first samples of the Girls Next Door book we had to go find
21:55Bridget and show it to her. So why don't we go surprise Bridget because she's behind the game
21:59house doing a radio show. Yeah because I know she really wants to see it. We're going to go show her
22:02Mary. Thank you Mary. Love you. Bye. Welcome back to the Bridget and Wednesday Friday show on Playboy
22:07Radio Series 198. I am minus my co-host. Hey guest stars. It's Holly and Kendra. Oh we have a surprise for you. Oh wait grab the mic. This is what I love about
22:18doing the show at the mansion. You never know who's going to pop in. We have a surprise for you. Okay I'm kind of
22:23nervous. The Girls Next Door book. Yay. Oh my god it turned out so cute. Our labor of love. I think it just
22:32screams Girls Next Door. It does. I think no matter what else our personalities have going on I think
22:37that is like a look that captures the three of us together. I love how the book turned out. I think
22:42it chronicles like the three of our friendships and you know the last three or four years of our lives and
22:48I love it. Go look in it. Look in it. Look. Okay. Skim through it. All right. It was a really fun
22:54experience to be able to put the book together with Holly and Kendra. We got to go through our
22:57pictures together and just kind of talk about the old times and all our old memories. That's our one
23:06big scrapbook. It's exciting. Hef has millions of volumes of scrapbooks and this is kind of like our
23:14little scrapbook from the three of us to our fans. Well thank you guys for coming out and showing this
23:20to me. I'm so excited. It's really cute. Congratulations to us. Yeah. Cheers. Cheers.
23:25Woo. Ching Ching. We have to prom. Cheers. Cheers.
23:29Come on my house. My house. I'm gonna give you candy. Come on my house. My house. I'm gonna give you
23:42cigs and dicks and the grips and the kicks. зарewinds. Come on my house. Come on.
