00:00The Green Climate Fund is the largest climate fund in the world set up to help developing countries reduce greenhouse gases, reform policy and adapt to climate change under the Paris Agreement.
00:13Managing Director of the Environmental Management Authority, Hayden Romano, says the EMA is elated to have been the first entity in the country to receive accreditation to access the fund.
00:24He calls it an important milestone.
00:27With this accreditation, the EMA can directly access funding from the GCF, the Green Climate Fund, as part of a country-driven approach.
00:45And we will be able to design and manage projects right here in Trinidad and Tobago.
00:53Romano says it would redound to more local control, reducing the need for intermediaries external to the country.
01:02This is a big step forward for us here in Trinidad and Tobago and for us at the EMA, empowering national stakeholders, including community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, to invest and take responsibility for protecting our environment and our future.
01:28The EMA says the accreditation came based on heavy collaboration with the planning ministry, as well as supporting regional and international partners.
01:38As for what's next?
01:40We expect the first set of concept notes to be ready by the second quarter in 2026.
01:48The EMA also plans to launch a national outreach campaign to raise awareness among public and private sector stakeholders, civil society organizations and development partners on how stakeholders can collaborate with the EMA on GCF-supported projects.
