00:01Welcome to an inside look at the remarkable season of Tarek Skubal.

00:05The future of Tarek Skubal is expected to be a topic of considerable discussion in the

00:09upcoming months, however, there is no question about the significant impact he had on the

00:13Tigers during the 2025 season.

00:16For the second year in a row, Skubal has been honored with the esteemed Tiger of the Year

00:20Award, which is given annually by the Detroit chapter of the Baseball Writers Association

00:25of America.

00:26This achievement makes him the first pitcher to win this award in consecutive years, in

00:3056 years.

00:32As he looks forward to the announcement of the American League Cy Young Award results next

00:36month, he aims to secure back-to-back honors, but simply repeating his Tiger of the Year

00:40is already a remarkable feat.

00:42In 2024, Skubal was a unanimous choice for the award, and this year he garnered 20 out

00:48of 23 first-place votes from the Detroit BBWA members.

00:52Other players, including Dylan Dingler, Riley Green, and Carey Carpenter, each received

00:56one first-place vote.

00:58The last time a pitcher achieved the honor of Tiger of the Year in consecutive seasons

01:02was Denny McLean, who accomplished this during his remarkable 31 wins.

01:06Bermendroboyevacan, Urendertain, Drobodumander Wenwin, Suri Wenwin season in 1968 and again

01:14in his 24-win season in 1969, McLean also won the AL Cy Young Award during that period.

01:20In both seasons young players have received honors, and Skubal is likely to achieve similar

01:25recognition.

01:25The last position player to be named Tiger of the Year consecutively was Jimer Candelario

01:31in 2020 and 2021.

01:33Skubal's BWAR of 6.6 was significantly higher than that of any other Tiger, with his catcher

01:39Dingler coming in second at 3.1.

01:42Although Skubal recorded 13 wins, which placed him just behind his close friend Casey Mize

01:47for the team lead, the Tigers had a strong record of 21-10 in games that Skubal started

01:53during the regular season.

01:54In contrast, their record was 66-65 in games he did not start, including an 18-10 record

02:01in Mize's starts.

02:02In the American League, Skubal excelled among pitchers, leading in BWAR, ERA, 2.21, FIP,

02:102.45, WIP, 0.89, and strikeout-to-walk ratio, 7.30, and he finished second to Boston's

02:18Garrett Crochet in strikeouts, 2.55, 2.41, but just as important, Skubal led the Tigers

02:25on the field on days he pitched.

02:26There's a different feeling facing the Tigers when Skubal is on the mound.

02:30Sitting in my chair, one of the easiest things to do and one of the most exciting things to

02:35do is hand the ball to the best pitcher in baseball, manager AJ Hinch said before Game

02:405 of their AL Division Series against the Mariners, he obviously is somebody deeply trusted in

02:45our clubhouse to bring intensity, to bring high-end pitching and bring results.

02:50We experience victories and defeats as a team, but he is the one who guides us.

02:55This leadership was evident as the postseason progressed.

02:59Skubal recorded 14 strikeouts over 7-2-3 innings, allowing just one run in Cleveland, which helped

03:06Detroit gain momentum in their American League Wild Card Series. His outstanding performances

03:11against Seattle included a total of 22 strikeouts across 13 innings, keeping the Tigers competitive

03:17in games 2 and 5 of their division series. In the latter game, he struck out 13 batters

03:23over 6 innings while allowing only one run, bringing Detroit within 9 outs of their first

03:28American League Championship Series appearance since 2013. In his last 5 starts of the season,

03:34Skubal faced off against the Guardians and the Mariners, and neither team was able to solve

03:38him. He limited both teams to just 6 earned runs. In 32 and 2-3 innings, he allowed 21 hits

03:45and struck out 53 batters. After the Tigers Game 5 defeat, Dingler expressed his admiration,

03:51stating,

03:52He gave everything he had throughout the season. That's the type of pitcher he is. He's incredible.

03:57I will always remember this season and his achievements. While I recall last year,

04:01this season was a unique experience for me as I caught for him. It was amazing. Additionally,

04:06the Detroit chapter of the BBWAA recognized Spencer Torkelson, the powerful first baseman,

04:12as the recipient of the Dan Uwold Good Guy Award. This award is given each year to the Tigers player

04:17who best demonstrates a collaborative attitude with the journalists covering the team.
