Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander says, the former Pnm administration starved the TTPS of resources and the present government would do what it takes to provide the necessary resources for the Police Service in Tobago.
Minister Alexander was interviewed by TV6'S Elizabeth Williams.
00:00After the little conversation that we have, you know, it seems that, you know, more or less it's resources and that type of activity that we probably need to engage a little more.
00:11And I just told them a short while ago, I said, you know, the last regime didn't leave you all with anything.
00:18So now I have to procure things to you all in order for you to have the type of equipment that you want.
00:24Now, also, you know, we're looking at these stations, the upgrading of those stations and all of that.
00:30It's about building things for purpose because I understand this was built some years ago.
00:36So now we have to look to see what we could include on it because there are a number of sections that the police is now incorporating into their fight.
00:45So we are hoping that we could get all of these things done.
00:48Minister Alexander spoke to TV6 News at the Scarborough Police Station.
00:52He said additional police vehicles are in train for the Tobago Division.
00:57I'm looking at Tobago and Tobago, the vehicles, more vehicles.
01:02And I asked my senior officers in the program, we are surrounded here by water.
01:09So some level of assistance coming from the police marine unit might be an asset here in one way or another.
01:19So all of these things that we are looking at, we are hoping to give them that resources as time goes by in order for them to not just achieve their goal, but also to assist in protecting persons on the island.
01:34Officers in Tobago were then commended for their leadership in reducing crime numbers, especially relating to murders.
01:42Let me also commend the officers in Tobago for their decrease in crime. Excellent, because it is what we are looking at. Crime is what the police and to some extent the government is being judged by crime.
02:01And when you have a team up here in Tobago who has a 300% decrease in crime, you ask what they are doing differently in Tobago as it relates to Trinidad.
02:14And again, let me just say this, hopefully these officers have gone beyond the call of duty.
02:20There are things, and I want to say this, there are things that the police will tell you, and there are things that they cannot.
02:27Not everything is done illegally like what persons believe.
02:33There are some things that is very unorthodox. Unorthodox don't mean illegal.
02:39Minister Alexander called on citizens to not get caught up with social media.
02:44And I'm hoping that Tobago doesn't get caught up in the social media.
02:50Well, listen, let me, I know you say that.
02:54Let me, let me, let me correct it.
02:56Let me correct it. Let me correct it.
02:58With negativity.
03:00Because there are some places that only strikes on negativity.
03:06So when I said the other day, I said, if I tell you the sky is falling, would you run and go wild?
03:13You must get it from a source.
03:15The government of Trinidad will not allow things to happen to its people without informing you.
