00:00At Daytona, when you've been running hard for a lot of hours, the engine is hot, everything is smoking hot, and then we run around under caution for an hour, hour and a half, everything cools down, so you get this heat spike through the whole system, and it hasn't, I mean, I've seen it a number of times, where right after you come back to green running, you end up having some sort of problem.
00:21Yep, certainly Formula One goes through that when they suddenly have a red flag and the car sits on the grid and things like that, I mean, these are all the simulations that the big teams think about, and they go through and they prepare for and make sure that all of the components are certainly going to be able to be up to that specific test.
00:38See the 80 Flying Lizard Porsche head back out from the pits as well, and we would love to show you the cars going down the Molson, through Molson Corner, up through Indianapolis, the French television crew takes a break in the middle of the night, the only cameras that remain up and operational are down the front straightaway and down towards the Dunlop Curve, so the pictures that you see are the pictures that we get from the international feed from French television, see one of the Peugeots on pit road as well,
01:08it's Benoit Trillier continuing to lead, the crew taking a look underneath it, 13 hours, 25 minutes left to go, it's Yen Magnusson who leads the GTE Pro category, having a good run in Corvette, Pascal Gibbon in GTE M.
01:29While you're enjoying Le Mans coverage on speed.com, don't forget that you can get even more extras, including video highlights, driver blogs, daily
01:38photo galleries, daily notebooks, feature stories, so go to Le Mans section on speed.com, check out all of those extras, you'll have the coverage and even more, see a problem there, I believe that's one of the oak liveried LMP cars, or gulf liveried LMP cars, I should say, of oak racing.
02:01Yeah, they're a great little team, I mean, certainly expanding now up to four cars, first time we've seen a four car entry from a single entrant in 15 years here at Le Mans, Dunlop development team also, done a lot of work with those guys over the last year or so.
02:16The Dunlop tire has really come a long way, we see the performance of it for certain in the American Le Mans series on the BMWs, and you've got to be impressed, and for oak racing to be the development team as far as prototype tires go in the LMS and the ILMC is a big feather in their cap.
02:34Interesting to see what they're looking at up front there, underneath the bodywork, because that's the front of the car, and the engine's in the back.
02:42Andrew?
02:48Well, I've got Nicholas Pross, just look at those eyes, they're the same eyes as his father.
02:52Nicholas, you know all about the Speed Channel, because you used to watch it when you went to university in the States.
02:58Yeah, definitely, well, I'm a big fan of motorsport, I spent three years living in New York, studying at Columbia, I watched a lot of Speed Channel at that time.
03:06Not bad, is it?
03:07It's great, it's great, I love US racing, LMS, I even got into NASCAR,
03:12which is quite funny when you come from Europe, I was watching that on Saturday afternoons and had a lot of fun.
03:18Now, down to Le Mans, you're having a great run here and battling with the Pescarolo.
03:22Yeah, it is a really, really hard fight, they're running really strong too, but we're there, you know, it's middle of the race, nothing is done.
03:30Yeah, keep pushing and I'm sure we can do really well.
03:34We were hearing from our commentators that your father said he'd never race here, because he thinks it's too dangerous, is that true?
03:41I don't know, they keep saying that, well, I'm sure it was more dangerous at the time, it is really still dangerous.
03:46We saw what happened today with McNish, and apparently I was in the car, but broken for a really big chance, I hope he's okay.
03:52But, yeah, it's, you know, the combination of these really fast LMPs and the GTs is very dangerous, and you have to be careful, but it is a great event, a great race, you know, and it's part of French culture, I think.
04:06How difficult is it to live in the shadow of your father, it must be difficult as a racing driver?
04:13It's always difficult, but you have to live your own life and do as much as you can, you know, so, okay, it is difficult, but I think I'm doing quite okay, it's difficult to do as well as him, but I'm trying really hard.
04:27Excellent answer, thanks very much, bonne chance for the rest of the race.
04:30Thank you, thank you very much.
04:31And Nicholas Prost currently second in the LMS LMP1 Drivers' Championship, so certainly getting the job done, and right now, Jerome Bligamolen in the 12, the Rebellion Racing entry, the Toyota Power, and that Lola chassis, you heard them say, taking the fight to Pescarolo, Christoph Tinsu behind the wheel right now for Pescarolo.
04:50And, of course, relating to his dad, Alain Prost, who is a four-time world champion, and he said it was the one thing missing from his resume, obviously, being French, there's so much passion around this race,
05:01but he just felt uncomfortable, Scott, coming here, certainly down in his tenure when he was at an age where he would compete competitively, so he probably feels there's something missing, but he made the choices that he felt at the time.
05:12I think it's interesting working around and racing with Bobby Rahal and now Graham Rahal on that team and seeing what's taken place just last weekend with Wayne Taylor and his boy.
05:24I think there's, I don't think you live under a shadow, I think you live next to him, and all that experience that he's just opening up to you and what you can learn and what you can do and how you do it,
05:36I think it's truly phenomenal, and the excitement that you see in the fathers, I mean, if you were at the Indy 500 and you saw Bobby and how excited he was, it was over the top.
05:45You were at Watkins Glen last weekend and saw the excitement in Wayne, so I think it's, from a father's standpoint, I think it's awesome.
05:54But as a father, I mean, you certainly understand the love for your children.
05:59I look at my two boys and I have a hard time watching baseball games.
06:04It gives me butterflies in my stomach.
06:06I cannot imagine watching my child in a race car.
06:09I'm not sure I'd want to be on a race track with Connor.
06:13He's a lunatic.
06:16Connor's a little bit aggressive.
06:17There is that piece.
06:19I mean, I think about that with my little boy.
06:21You know, you got to let them follow their dream, whatever that is, and support it and be there.
06:30I don't know.
06:31I'm kind of with you.
06:32I've seen my boy in a car and seeing what some of these guys have gone through, like Rocky and that massive crash and thinking about that.
06:40I mean, you think it leaves a pit in your stomach right now.
06:42I think it's difficult from both sides.
06:44As a son, you look at your father who has had a stellar career and it's hard because the pressure's on you to emulate him.
06:51As a parent, it's got to be difficult to watch your son or your daughter in these situations out on the racetrack.
06:57Because as safe as we know it is, we also have seen the ugly reality of the sport.
07:01And that is, it still remains quite dangerous indeed, the 56 BMW.
07:08Jamie?
07:11Yep.
07:11And right now, right now, everything looks to be fairly, fairly routine.
07:16It's just fuel going in the car, cleaning off the windshield.
07:19The teams are paying extra attention to this right now because it is very dark outside.
07:23They need as much visibility as possible.
07:26Crew taking extra care to look underneath the car, make sure there's nothing stuck underneath.
07:30No debris caught underneath after being under caution for so long.
07:33They are not taking tires, though.
07:35Number 56 was fuel only and standard cleanup and they're back out underway.
07:39But it's about to get busy in pit lane as we have Corvette Racing and Level 5 Motorsports who are pitted side by side about to come in at the same time.
07:47I'll keep you posted.
07:48Thanks, Jamie.
07:49We understand a little bit of information from Audi.
07:52Martin Pass, who's one of the PR representatives there, has reported that the entire team has been told that Mike Rockenfeller is okay.
08:01Alan McNish came back to the racetrack but did not feel particularly well.
08:07Took a nap for a few hours and has decided to head back to the hotel.
08:11So that is good news, especially for Mike Rockenfeller, who we didn't have a lot of information on.
08:16We had a little information on Alan.
08:18Good to see that he felt well enough to come to the racetrack.
08:20But after shunts like those, last thing you want to do, I would think, is hang around here for too long.
08:26You think you feel bad now.
08:28Imagine how sore they'll be.
08:29Scott, you know this.
08:30Oh, I know that very well.
08:31The next several days.
08:32Exactly right.
08:33And the good news is, wow.
08:36I mean, two horrific shunts.
08:38Both these guys are walking away.
08:39It says a lot for Audi and what they've done with their cars.
08:41I think it says a lot for all these teams and the equipment that they put together on the racetrack.
08:46And hopefully we don't see any more of those horrific crashes and situations.
08:51You know, we talked about Romain Dumas saying he didn't really like the feel of the enclosed car.
08:57It felt like in a dangerous situation he wouldn't be able to get out of it.
09:01I wonder if his opinion has changed somewhat after seeing the impact that his teammates have had
09:07and how well those two chassis have stood up.
09:10Not saying that if it had been an open cockpit car that they wouldn't have had the same results.
09:14But certainly the more infrastructure that you have around you, you would think that at least in these two situations,
09:22it certainly is a little added benefit.
09:25I think particularly as Scott alluded to, the technology now that's built into these race cars.
09:30I mean, we talk about that monocoque from Audi and Peugeot for that model being a one-piece.
09:35The structural integrity that that brings to the car certainly helps with the handling.
09:39But in terms of a car suddenly go flipping through the air and touching the ground multiple times,
09:44it's really like a little cocoon that they're in, and they are relatively safe.
09:47You never can, you know, see everything that's going to happen
09:51and have safety precautions in place for any situation.
09:53But they are really as safe as you could possibly be.
09:56And like you said, Scott, they are two massive, massive crashes that we're seeing here today.
10:02Jamie?
10:06Number 73 Corvette on pit road now.
10:09Tommy Milner's going to stay behind the wheel.
10:11They also did not take tires, just took extra care.
10:14Thank you for everything.
10:15Got cleaned up.
10:16You can hear Tommy just pulling out of the pit lane.
10:20There was a momentary stall there.
10:22I did check in with the team to see if we've heard any more on Olivier Beretta.
10:25After sucking in those exhaust fumes during that caution,
10:28they do know that there was nothing wrong with the Corvette.
10:31He was just breathing in some exhaust fumes from the other cars from being out under caution for so long.
10:37But they have not heard anything yet, so we are going to have to keep you posted on that.
10:41But we are going to see some more pit stops, Andrew.
10:47Yeah, I've got activity all around me at the moment.
10:49We've got the number 39 car.
10:51That's the Argentine car, which has been doing so well.
10:55Currently third.
10:56And actually, it's a good thing down here.
10:59Triars, in a way, they finally managed to sort it out.
11:02And didn't quite just see the driver because it was in the background.
11:05I think it was Pierre Capa staying in the car.
11:08Exactly.
11:08Mateus Russo being shown on timing and scoring right now.
11:11But interesting, Jamie was talking about a slight stall of the Corvette leaving their pit box.
11:16Different rules here at Le Mans.
11:17Yeah, and the other thing is, when you're on hot tires, Scott, I mean, it's a lot more tricky getting out of pit lane.
11:22When you're on fresh rubber that's just been thrown on, yes, they come from the ovens, but they don't have the same temperature and stickiness to the ground.
11:29So when you're trying to get out of pit lane, not get wheel spin, it's easy to stall in that situation.
11:33Two things are going on right now, and this is coming from driving for the Corvette team and getting a lap ahead.
11:39You really start being a little more cautious with everything on the pit lane.
11:43And, Calvin, you're exactly right.
11:45You've got stickier tires.
11:46You don't want to just dump the clutch and snap a half shaft or something like that.
11:51You're more willing to, okay, well, I stalled it a little bit.
11:53Okay, we'll fire back up and continue on, but not overburden any of the componentry.
11:58Of course, the other issue is it is expressly forbidden to spin the wheels as you leave your pit box at Le Mans.
12:05We'll take an opportunity to take a quick break.
12:07Benoit Trillier continues to lead overall and in the LMP1 category.
12:12Olivier Lombard in the P2 category.
12:16Plenty of action yet to come from Le Mans.
12:18We'll give you a little shot of some of the sights, the sounds.
12:22It is the 24 hours of Le Mans.
12:28Speed's coverage of the 24 hours of Le Mans is brought to you by Audi Motorsports
12:35and the new R18 with Audi ultra-lightweight technology.
12:39Audi, truth in engineering.
12:44The four rings right where they want to be right now.
12:47Benoit Trillier up front and leading here at Le Mans,
12:52but the only Audi remaining in the field after the huge crash by the number one.
12:58Mike Rockenfeller, but it was Alan McNish, was the first of the Audis out.
13:02And there's a look at the rest of the cars that have retired today.
13:05And we've got great news.
13:06We understand that Alan McNish was at the circuit, but he wasn't feeling that well,
13:09but he's just gone back to his hotel for a good sleep.
13:12And we also got news from Audi Sport that Mike Rockenfeller is okay.
13:17That is a huge relief for everyone here at Speed and certainly everyone in the paddock.
13:21But he will stay in hospital overnight for observation.
13:24But mega news for Rocky that he's survived that scary crash.
13:30It really brings the personal side to motorsports when you see people that you know and know well,
13:36that you consider your friends in these situations.
13:39And certainly an emotional side to motorsports when anyone is involved in a situation like that,
13:43even much more so personal when you know them.
13:46Down in Le Manson, you can tell that the villages that we saw a little more active in the daylight
13:51have gotten somewhat sleepy at almost 2 o'clock in the morning.
13:55But the thunder of the machine still persists, and it will for another 13 hours and change.
14:0213 hours, 6 minutes left here in the 79th running of Le Manson.
14:06Well, diesel certainly is a unique center.
14:08That was a gas-powered engine.
14:10You'd think the crank was out of that thing.
14:12It's pretty wild.
14:13It's pretty amazing to see the crashes from both the Audis and most fortunately the guys who were able to walk away.
14:21But it just sends this shockwave through all the competitors, you know,
14:27just how things can go wrong in a really bad way really fast.
14:32I remember the Formula One race at Monaco just a week or so ago.
14:36Yeah, we saw Perez have that scary accident coming out of the tunnel, got it wrong.
14:40And we actually spoke to Adrian Fernandez this week at Le Mans,
14:42who kind of is a mentor for Sergio Perez and his sponsorship from Telmex.
14:47And he said essentially he was down there dialing his cursor knob and just got it wrong through the tunnel.
14:54And massive consequences there.
14:56Got it all wrong under braking for the chicane at Monaco.
14:59And a big hit.
15:00He actually took part in the qualifying or in the practice session yesterday at Montreal,
15:04but didn't feel well and his place was taken by Pedro de la Rosa for the Sabatine this weekend.
15:10Telmex very near and dear to my heart.
15:14But, you know, we were talking about this earlier, Calvin.
15:17I mean, how many different switches and knobs and things that are available to the Formula One drivers
15:22and when you make those changes?
15:24Yeah, it's wild.
15:25Particularly on a circuit such as Monaco is so busy anyway
15:28and they just run and maximize the car's efficiency around that race circuit
15:32and the young rookie got it wrong.
15:33But a very impressive young driver.
15:35Farnbacher, Ferrari on the road and...
15:39Looks like there's a lot of smoke coming out of this thing.
15:41Something's up.
15:42These were the guys who were fastest at the Le Mans test.
15:45Smoke, steam, something.
15:46It's like it's out of the radiator.
15:49Lee Keane.
15:50It's hard to see out of that sucker too.
15:52Look at that.
15:53Yeah, out of the radiator in front.
15:54So you wonder if perhaps they hold a radiator, see the moisture all over the driver's side door there.
16:00So some type of a leak, whether it's a line or the radiator itself,
16:04you see the crew member with the dolly in hand.
16:06So they'll get the driver in, the dollies will go underneath,
16:09and the 89 will head to the garage.
16:11Horst Farnbacher runs this team, Dominic's father,
16:14and he is really just an ace.
16:16He's run Porsches for so many years,
16:17but when he got his hands on one of these Ferraris,
16:20they immediately got these things working well also.
16:23And the Hankook tires are really getting rave reports from Europe
16:26in terms of their ability.
16:27We talk about Dunlop's progress.
16:29This team certainly has got great potential with this tire as well.
16:33They're pushing it back in there.
16:34You can just see the line of water from a radiator up front there.
16:38It looks like they had, they're going to work.
16:39They're going to absolutely change that radiator up front,
16:42whether it's a rock or a piece of debris
16:45or something even bigger than that that has gone through up there.
16:48And remember, this car did the exact same lifetime
16:51to the thousandth of a second in qualifying,
16:54as did Ollie Gavin in the Corvette.
16:56They went back to fifth because the Ferrari did the time second.
17:00The Corvette had done the time a little bit earlier,
17:02but it shows you how competitive this team had been.
17:05I'm not sure if we were looking at onboard there.
17:07I wonder if it's power steering maybe getting on something.
17:11I mean, he was working the steering wheel.
17:12That's a lot of steam up across the left-shield.
17:14Perhaps, but the eight of Stefan Sarrazin, the Peugeot, is in.
17:17Andrew?
17:20Oh.
17:21Yes, the car, which is lying fourth, is in.
17:23This looks like a routine, routine, routine stop for Hill.
17:29One engineer just got underneath the car, shined a torch.
17:34Checking up things are now out.
17:36It accelerates with a little puff of diesel smoke,
17:39and it is back in the race.
17:40It's a nice clean stop for Peugeot 8.
17:43And a problem for the 39, the PECOM Racing Lola.
17:47Judd BMW has backed in heavily into the tires.
17:50Fourth in class with Mateus Russo behind the wheel,
17:53the 25-year-old Argentinian.
17:55His team had been running well.
17:56It is the only true 2011 spec LMP2 car,
18:00the cost-gap car, in the field.
18:03The Judd BMW with a power plant,
18:05and they had been running well,
18:07but Russo with some type of a problem on course,
18:09and it has put him heavily into the tires.
18:11That's a big hit.
18:12You can see the tire barrier behind him pushed in.
18:16The car pretty well tore up, rear wing.
18:18You can't get a look at the left side,
18:21but looking at that, it's going to take some,
18:24quite a bit of time to get that car turned around
18:26and potentially back on.
18:27Let's see if we can take a look.
18:30See, we can see what happens.
18:31Oh, there we go.
18:32Oh, wow.
18:32That was coming into the Dunlop chicane.
18:35Yeah, the curves.
18:36And the problem is, it won't get back in.
18:38I don't know if that's 10 meters or not,
18:40but you see Russo away from the car.
18:43There's a rule where the driver must not go
18:45more than 10 meters away from the car,
18:47otherwise he will be excluded.
18:50And he's bailed on it.
18:51We've seen several drivers over the years
18:53who don't really understand that rule.
18:55You've got to stay with it
18:56until you decide your day is over.
18:58So, Benoit Trillier continuing to lead
19:01and then Olivier Lombard in the LMP2 category.
19:05And we're going to take one out
19:06because Teos Russo gone from that order now.
19:08Yen Magnussen in the Corvette.
19:10Good news for Corvette back on top at Le Mans.
19:13Can they remain there for the next 13 hours?
19:16Then Pascal Gibbon leading in the GTE-M category.
19:19It's Arca from Pocono up next and Speed.com.
19:24The coverage of the 24 hours of Le Mans
19:26will continue right there.
19:27We told you 25 hours of coverage.
19:29We're certainly going to give it to you
19:31in that Speed.com coverage
19:33brought to you by Chevy Corvette.
19:35We'll be back on air here on the network,
19:3711 p.m. and take you all the way
19:39to the checkered flag for the 79th running
19:42of the 24 hours of Le Mans.
19:44Still a long way to go in just a few more hours.
19:47These teams, these drivers,
19:49will see the sun beginning to rise,
19:51but a long way to go to the checkered flag.
19:53We'll be back to more action from Le Mans.
19:57Le Mans, its commitment, a year's work for one race,
20:16always knowing the failure of a single part
20:18or a single moment of inattention will spell defeat.
20:22It's exhaustion and the heavy hand of luck.
20:25As the long day wanes,
20:27the once bright cars are pale and battered,
20:29streaked with oil.
20:31The great crowd will flood the track.
20:33The winners will soar on its rising tide.
20:36Who will they be?
20:37The answer lies ahead.
20:39The 79th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans
20:41is next.
20:47Drivers from all around the world
20:49come to Cirque de la Salle,
20:51Le Mans, France each and every year
20:53to try and conquer this legendary
20:55endurance sports car event.
20:56Some people have tried for two or more decades
21:00and not succeeded at this classic.
21:04It is grueling.
21:05It is hard.
21:05It is heartbreaking.
21:06It is car-breaking as we have seen here today already.
21:11And look at that.
21:12There's light on the horizon
21:13as we welcome you back to the network.
21:15We welcome you back to speed
21:16and we're not going to leave you.
21:18We're all the way here to the very end and beyond.
21:21NoMoreSpeed.com.
21:22We're here on the network right the way through.
21:25Lee Diffie along with Calvin Fish,
21:26Dorsey Schrader, Greg Kramer, Justin Bell.
21:29And it has been a thoroughly enjoyable day thus far.
21:34What we do need to say is we welcome you back
21:36you did see a yellow flag there.
21:38We're under safety car conditions again.
21:40Isn't that a beautiful shot?
21:42We understand the number 13 rebellion Toyota Lola
21:47of Jean-Christophe Bouillon.
21:48Oh, there we go.
21:49That tells the story.
21:51We heard it just stopped.
21:52I think it's more than just stopped.
21:54Yeah, it came to an abrupt stop
21:55and this car only two or three laps ago
21:57had just left pit lane
21:58and it had just come in for a service
22:00and a routine stop.
22:01Could have been a cold tire issue.
22:04Porsche curves.
22:04Yeah.
22:06Remember, it's only,
22:07it's less than 40 degrees temperature out there.
22:11That's where the drivers really need to be on their toes
22:13until they get that correct tire pressure
22:15and temperature up.
22:16But we talk about tire warmers.
22:18Tire warmers are theoretically banned,
22:20but they have these big ovens
22:20at the back of the garages.
22:22So there's some delay in terms of getting them out there,
22:24out to pit lane and on the race cars.
22:26They're not super hot,
22:27but certainly do have a little bit of temperature in them
22:30by the time the driver leaves pit lane.
22:33They're the woes for the Rebellion Toyota team.
22:35Let's highlight the woes
22:37for the Audi Sport organization.
22:39And it all started with Romain Dumas
22:41on Wednesday evening.
22:44Look at this.
22:44He hits Roll Goat
22:45in the Aston Martin,
22:48the AMR Middle East car.
22:50And then Tom Christensen,
22:51Mr. Le Mans,
22:52puts a couple of wheels off at Tete Rouge.
22:55A couple of minutes to go
22:55in the final qualifying session.
22:57He said he was going for it,
22:58just got a little too wide there on entry.
23:00Heavy damage to the left side
23:02of the Audi number three.
23:04It's the story of Audi this week.
23:05Crashes, crashes, crashes.
23:07This was Alan McNish.
23:08This took our breath away
23:10at the end of the opening hour.
23:11And we thought that was
23:14as bad as we're going to see.
23:16But we...
23:17It wasn't, unfortunately.
23:19Mike Rockenfeller tops this.
23:21This is the great news, though.
23:23Alan gets out,
23:24walks away,
23:25a little bit of an assist.
23:26He is okay.
23:27And then Mike Rockenfeller,
23:29the number one Audi,
23:30the defending race winner,
23:32goes on the inside
23:33of the AF Corsa Ferrari.
23:36Look at that.
23:38At in excess of 180 miles per hour.
23:42And the R8 just explodes.
23:45The carbon fibre explosion.
23:47And his teammate and good friend,
23:48Romain Dumas,
23:49cannot believe it.
23:50It was disbelief right throughout
23:52the Audi squad.
23:53However, reports came in
23:55not long after
23:56that Mike Rockenfeller
23:58was able to get himself
23:59out of the car,
24:00climb over the barrier,
24:02and put himself in a safe zone.
24:05So Audi might only have one car left,
24:07one R18 left,
24:08but it is very much in the fight.
24:10You see it in third there
24:12at the moment.
24:12It will cycle up
24:13to that top position
24:14on pit stop rotation.
24:16I just want to say one thing
24:18that we hadn't mentioned
24:19in the earlier shots
24:20where you see that McNish crash
24:22and you see the right rear tyre.
24:24It disappears out of shot
24:25to the top
24:25and comes crashing down
24:27beside a photographer.
24:28That's Annie Profitt,
24:30who we've known
24:30for a long, long time.
24:32She's been around motorsport
24:33for many, many years.
24:35She did not even know
24:37that that wheel
24:38was coming down beside her.
24:39You know it was her lucky day.
24:41You know,
24:41and it wasn't just the wheel.
24:43It was the whole suspension.
24:44It was the wheel,
24:45the tyre and suspension complete,
24:47and she was a very lucky lady.
24:50Rolling through the top five
24:51in P1, in P2.
24:52This is as it stands
24:53at the moment
24:54while we are under caution.
24:56And you can see
24:56in third place there
24:57the American Level 5 team
24:59of Christophe Bouchoud,
25:00Scott Tucker,
25:01and João Barbosa.
25:03Yeah, there's been
25:04a bit of that going on.
25:05Calvin Fish was just doing that
25:06as he came into the booth.
25:07Did you get some sleep, mate?
25:09I did.
25:09I get a little nap
25:10and feel refreshed.
25:11The shower did me
25:11the world of good
25:12and ready to go.
25:13That's the way.
25:14And the story just gets
25:15better and better
25:16and better.
25:16Thumbs up from 1998
25:18winner Stefan Orteli.
25:20And Corvette is on pit road.
25:23Greg, take it away.
25:24It's here.
25:29Westbrook has just climbed out.
25:31Now, they kind of caught
25:32with this yellow.
25:33They caught Ollie
25:34a little bit by surprise,
25:35but Ollie responding very fast
25:37and has thrown the helmet on
25:38and is already getting ready
25:40to climb on board.
25:41Normally, he'd already
25:41be in the car.
25:43As I said,
25:43they decided to stop here
25:44a little bit early
25:46because of the caution.
25:47And he really had to hustle
25:48to get his kit on.
25:50He's in the car now.
25:51Fuel is done.
25:51Car is up.
25:52And they have started
25:53that sequence
25:54on the tires
25:55at this point.
25:56Now, they are working
25:57on that right front corner.
25:59And I wonder
26:00if they're starting
26:01to do a brake change here.
26:03It looks like
26:03that is exactly
26:04what's happening.
26:05Again, under caution,
26:06this is the time to do it
26:08when you're going
26:08to add that extra time.
26:09They said that
26:10in the absolutely
26:11prime condition,
26:12they ought to be able
26:13to do this in 40 seconds.
26:16But the scenario
26:18is, if you recall,
26:19with the 73 car,
26:20they had a problem
26:21getting the rotors off
26:22and they figured
26:23it cost them
26:23an extra 45 seconds.
26:26And that's one of the things
26:26that plummeted them
26:27down the order.
26:28So far,
26:29this right front
26:30looks like that one
26:31is going fairly decently
26:33at this point.
26:36And they are snugging
26:37things up.
26:38So we'll see
26:38what happens here
26:39on the left front corner.
26:42And moving over here,
26:44having a look.
26:45That looks to be going
26:46OK as well
26:47at this point.
26:48Uh-oh.
26:49Now they've got
26:49a little bit
26:50of a problem here.
26:54They are,
26:55yeah,
26:55now they've,
26:56OK,
26:56now they've got it
26:57pucked into place.
26:58Reaching in,
26:59now doing the quick
27:00connects on the lines.
27:02Boy,
27:03he still seems
27:04to be struggling
27:04just a little bit.
27:05OK,
27:06left front is done.
27:07Tire is going on.
27:09Come back around
27:09on the right front.
27:11And that one,
27:11this one seems to be
27:12taking a little bit
27:13more time.
27:14Again,
27:14they're looking down.
27:15Now they,
27:16whoop,
27:17not quite.
27:19And we also lost
27:20one of the wheel nuts
27:21from that left rear.
27:23Of course,
27:23they have a spare
27:24one immediately.
27:26And now the right
27:26front tire goes on.
27:28So it wasn't
27:29exactly as smooth
27:30as they would have
27:30liked on the brake
27:31change.
27:31But nowhere near as
27:32bad as it was
27:33for the 73 at this
27:34point.
27:35Doing the final prep
27:37of the stoppars
27:37down off the jacks.
27:40And he is away.
27:42Boy,
27:42I'll tell you,
27:43the air gun that
27:44lifts that car up
27:45in the air,
27:46almost got caught
27:46underneath.
27:47But the crew
27:48really happy
27:49in the end.
27:50Even though they
27:50had a little bit
27:51of a stick
27:52on that right
27:53front corner,
27:54it worked well.
27:55And they've got
27:56that done.
27:57So they are out.
27:58And I think
27:58I might be able,
27:59right now,
28:00Richard Westbrook,
28:02having a chat
28:03with the gang
28:03here from Radio
28:05Le Mans.
28:06As soon as they
28:06finish with them,
28:07I'll try and grab
28:08them and get a word
28:08with them.
28:09Good to see the
28:10boys so pumped.
28:11Nothing like
28:12performing,
28:13but when you perform
28:14well under pressure,
28:15that's another thing
28:16to all together.
28:17You can see the damage
28:18there to the
28:19rebellion.
28:20That's pretty major.
28:21Yes, it is.
28:22No doubt about it.
28:23For that Corvette crew,
28:24the key is you've got
28:25the three pace cars
28:26which is spread
28:27around the racetrack.
28:28We've talked about it
28:28before.
28:29Imagine it at the
28:29Circa's a clock.
28:31You have one pace car
28:32at least at 12 o'clock,
28:33one at four,
28:33one at eight.
28:34So essentially what it
28:35does under course
28:35to get race back
28:36two-minute segments
28:37for the guys in pit lane
28:39there doing some servicing.
28:40It's about 37-second delta,
28:42to the difference
28:42between staying
28:43on the racetrack
28:43and running at speed.
28:45Then you've got
28:45about 30 seconds
28:46getting the fuel in.
28:47So it really gives them
28:48about a minute
28:48to get that brake change
28:49without going two segments
28:51down in terms
28:52of the pace car sequence.
28:53And you saw
28:54that they didn't just
28:54change the brake pads.
28:56They actually had
28:56the whole unit as one.
28:58Quick disconnect
28:58on the brake line
28:59and they replaced
29:00the caliper
29:00with the brake pads
29:01in it already.
29:02That is faster.
29:03They did have
29:04a bit of a problem
29:04with that one
29:05though.
29:05The reason why
29:06we're under this
29:07full-course caution
29:08is due to the crash
29:09by Jean-Christophe Bouillon
29:11in the Rebellion Toyota.
29:13Justin has more.
29:13on the radio.
29:25Bouillon didn't say
29:26I crashed
29:27and they pointed out
29:29that they knew that
29:30because they were
29:31watching him on the monitor
29:32buried deep
29:33into the gravel.
29:35He can't tell them
29:36why it happened.
29:37Obviously,
29:38they know he was
29:38on pretty fresh tyres.
29:40We've already discussed
29:41that they get the tyres
29:41up to in those,
29:43you know,
29:43baking little ovens
29:44out the back
29:45as close as they can
29:45to operating temperatures
29:46but at 10 or 11 degrees
29:48and right now
29:49there's a certain
29:50humidity to the air
29:51so it's very chilly
29:52so, you know,
29:53by the time they get them
29:54from here
29:54plus the pit lane
29:55and then go out
29:57it really plummets a bit
29:58so maybe it was
29:58a simple mistake.
29:59We'll find out
30:00when he gets back.
30:01All I can tell you
30:02right now is that
30:02it's obviously
30:03not going anywhere.
30:04Greg?
30:09Thanks very much,
30:10Justin.
30:11Richard just getting out
30:12of that 74
30:13Corvette.
30:13We just checked in
30:14a little while ago
30:15and they said
30:15how about five laps
30:16are going to be coming
30:17in?
30:17Caution came out
30:18obviously came in early
30:19and you had the decision
30:21to do the brakes.
30:21Problems there
30:22or just getting it done?
30:23I think, you know,
30:24we had to choose
30:25our moment carefully
30:26when to do it
30:26and to be honest,
30:28I think we've chosen
30:29a good time.
30:30You can do it
30:32at least.
30:32This safety car
30:33is very, very strange.
30:35It's almost quite new
30:35to everyone
30:36because you don't
30:37actually gain time
30:38by pitting
30:39under a safety car
30:40because you can
30:41get held
30:42by the red light
30:43but I think
30:43they chose it right.
30:44They had to do
30:45a very quick brake change
30:46to get back
30:47behind the next
30:48safety car
30:48which they did.
30:49So a great job
30:50by the crew
30:50as always.
30:52Cars, tricky
30:53but it's,
30:54I think that's
30:55track related.
30:56It's tricky
30:57for everyone
30:57and we seem
30:58to be coping
30:59pretty well right now.
30:59Is it stuff
31:01on the track
31:01or is it track temp
31:02just being so cold?
31:03Track temp, yeah.
31:04I mean,
31:04it's unusually cold
31:05for this time of the year
31:06but we just want
31:08to keep going.
31:09Of course,
31:10you've, you know,
31:10really made your name
31:11driving Porsches
31:12with all your success there.
31:13Now you're driving
31:14big V8 Thunder Iron.
31:15How are you enjoying this?
31:16Yeah, I love it.
31:17I want to keep this one,
31:19thanks.
31:20I don't want to go back
31:20to anything else.
31:22I think that smile
31:23and that comment
31:24says it all.
31:24He's loving
31:25a little bit of thunder.
31:26Congratulations, Richard.
31:27Good luck
31:27for the rest of the race.
31:28Wow.
31:29That was,
31:29that told the story.
31:30I want to keep this one.
31:32Pretty hard to believe
31:33that someone like
31:34Richard Westbrook
31:34who's a Porsche Carrera
31:36Cup champion,
31:36a Super Cup champion
31:38has only done
31:39one Le Mans
31:40before this.
31:41He's learning his way.
31:42He's coming off
31:43a nightmare run
31:45at Silverstone
31:46in the GT1 championship
31:47where he and
31:48Stefan Mucha
31:49had a boxing match
31:51with cars
31:52and he was still steaming
31:54when he turned up
31:55at scrutineering
31:55earlier this week.
31:57This will help
31:57calm him down a little bit.
31:58They're leading the way
31:59and leading very well.
32:10Speed's coverage
32:11of the 24 hours
32:12of Le Mans
32:12is brought to you
32:13by Chevrolet
32:14and America's
32:15premier sports car
32:16Corvette.
32:16We really appreciate
32:22Corvette partnering us
32:23on this broadcast,
32:24that's for sure.
32:25And as we take you
32:26to the GTE Pro
32:28standings at the moment,
32:30it could be
32:31a banner day
32:33for the Bowtie Boys,
32:35that's for sure.
32:36We'll see.
32:36Still a long way to go.
32:38Nine and three quarter hours.
32:39But that's how it stands
32:40in GTO Pro,
32:41which has been fascinating.
32:43GTE Am could be
32:45another American team
32:46with Flying Lizard
32:47up there at the moment.
32:48They're having a great day.
32:49Spencer Pompeli on debut
32:50alongside Darren Law.
32:51He's been here
32:51two times before.
32:53This is his third visit
32:53and of course,
32:54team principal
32:55Seth Nyman
32:56doing a great job.
32:57Of course,
32:57we have seen
32:57some very ugly images
32:59of prototypes today
33:00that are just contorted,
33:02busted,
33:02and broken.
33:03Yeah,
33:04this has been
33:04the highest attrition
33:05for crash damage
33:07that we've seen
33:07in years.
33:09And these are
33:09massive crashes.
33:10You saw the whole
33:10under tray,
33:11whole flat bottom
33:12of that car ripped off.
33:14It's now the 13th car
33:15of the 56
33:16that started this race
33:17over and out.
33:21And, you know,
33:22these racks
33:23in perfect weather.
33:25And we've had no rain.
33:26We've had,
33:27you know,
33:27just absolutely
33:28perfect conditions.
33:30And we've had
33:31over three and a half hours
33:33under safety car conditions.
33:37That's quite remarkable.
33:39You're talking about
33:40the different stress
33:41that that then puts
33:42on the machinery,
33:43Dorsey,
33:43because these cars
33:44are designed
33:44to be running
33:45operating temperature
33:46with the airflow
33:47through the car,
33:48through the rads,
33:49through the cooling systems.
33:50And suddenly,
33:52they run around
33:52under caution.
33:53It puts a different
33:53load on everything.
33:54Plus, it's very cold.
33:56You know,
33:56it's, as Justin
33:58was saying before,
33:59barely 40 degrees
34:00from there.
34:01And these tires
34:02don't like that
34:03cold temperature.
34:04And I think
34:05that's what we're seeing
34:06with these crashes
34:06as they come out
34:07of pit lane.
34:08Those tire warmers
34:09are good behind,
34:10but by the time
34:10they get the things
34:11onto the car itself
34:13and the car
34:14up onto the racetrack,
34:15they probably drop down.
34:17You're going to see
34:18the drivers
34:20really working
34:20those tires hard.
34:21There you see
34:22one of the tire technicians
34:23just getting the
34:24track temperature
34:25from pit lane there.
34:27Really gives them
34:28a read in terms
34:28of the drops
34:29below a certain level.
34:30Maybe they can go
34:31one compound softer
34:32for the teams
34:33giving them the grip.
34:34They'll have an operating range
34:36which they'll have
34:36them experienced
34:37during the course
34:37of this week
34:38and previous visits
34:39to the racetrackers too.
34:41And there's good news
34:42that Olivier Beretta
34:43back in pit lane,
34:45we talked about him
34:46getting carbon
34:46monoxide poisoning.
34:48Good to see him.
34:50I think he's
34:51doing a rear end
34:53check here.
34:54I don't know
34:54what that's about.
34:55taking a body jump.
35:01Corvette really
35:02analyzed everything
35:03and you know
35:04how hot your skin
35:05gets in those things?
35:06That's not a step too.
35:07106 degrees
35:08is what we saw
35:09with the Corvette
35:10with the Chevrolet
35:11is your skin temperature
35:12I'm talking about
35:13106 degrees.
35:16That's why you don't
35:16feel that good
35:17when you get out
35:17of the car right away.
35:22Listen to that noise.
35:23Yeah, that's what I said.
35:25If that was a
35:25if that was a gasoline
35:27engine, things would
35:28be not good.
35:30You'd be tipping
35:31the clutch and
35:32pulling her off.
35:32Yeah, finding a place
35:33to park for you.
35:35One prototype
35:36that this caution
35:36has helped
35:37is the 33
35:39level 5
35:40Lola HPD.
35:42Joao Barbosa
35:43is currently driving
35:44and that will help
35:46bridge the gap
35:47to Tom Kimber-Smith
35:48and David Halliday
35:51the two cars ahead.
35:52So Scott Tucker's car
35:54the group led
35:55by David Stone
35:56is in the top three
35:57in the P2 class
35:58on debut here
36:00in P2
36:00we should add.
36:01We should say
36:02that is a harmonics
36:03that you're hearing.
36:04That's not exactly
36:05what the Pujo sounds like.
36:06Back there,
36:07very, very quiet.
36:08If you were out there
36:08you wouldn't hear any of that
36:09but where that camera is
36:11or where we're picking up
36:12that there's some sort
36:13of a harmonic
36:13and we're hearing
36:14that real nasty sound
36:15that is not
36:17what these pieces
36:17sound like at all.
36:18Sebastian Baudet
36:24getting ready.
36:27Yeah, this is going
36:28to be a fascinating battle.
36:29We talked about
36:30the two massive crashes
36:31with the number one,
36:33number three Audi.
36:34They've got one bullet
36:35left in their gun.
36:36Three very healthy Peugeots
36:38sandwiched the Audi
36:41right now.
36:41just snuck over
36:42the 200-lap mark.
36:45Last year
36:45we saw a distance record
36:48created
36:49with 397 laps completed.
36:52We're going to get
36:53nowhere near that
36:54this year.
36:54Not going to see that.
36:55That was what we've gone through
36:56with these cautions.
36:59Isn't that a beautiful sight?
37:01Yeah, look at the big screen
37:01down there.
37:03Hi, Mom.
37:04Do you know every year
37:05we return to Circuit
37:07de la Salle
37:07the ACO
37:09have done something
37:10extra to improve
37:11this facility?
37:12It's amazing.
37:13It's something here.
37:14It's something there.
37:15There's just continual improvement.
37:17They keep making it bigger
37:18and that's hard to believe
37:19because it's so massive
37:21to begin with
37:22at eight and a half miles around.
37:26It's just a delight
37:27to return to the town
37:28each year
37:29and there's little things
37:30that you forget, Cal,
37:31in the space of a year.
37:32We're so busy
37:33running around here
37:34and there
37:35covering various races
37:36and just to go back
37:37into the center of town,
37:39wander down to
37:40in front of the cathedral
37:41at Place de Jacobin
37:42where they host
37:43a scrutineering.
37:45Just little simple things
37:46like when you see
37:47the manhole covers
37:48and it has
37:49Ville du Monde
37:50on there
37:50and this whole town
37:52just looks forward
37:54to this event
37:54on an annual basis.
37:56It's what's put it
37:58on the worldwide map.
38:01It's pretty cool
38:02is when you walk
38:02through the town
38:03there are various
38:04discs
38:05with the imprinted hands
38:08of the winning drivers
38:09and we were at
38:10scrutineering the other night
38:11and following that
38:12the winning team
38:13from last year
38:14including Mike Rockenfeller
38:15who was involved
38:16in that awful crash
38:17here earlier tonight
38:18along with Ruman Dumas
38:19and Timo Bernard
38:20they were out there
38:21having that done
38:22and that will be there
38:23forever
38:24and certainly
38:24a really fun event
38:26big crowd there
38:27to watch that happen
38:28and some legends
38:30in our game
38:31as you walk around town
38:32and see the various
38:33years and the various
38:34victors.
38:34I don't think
38:35there's a shop
38:35whether it be
38:36a clothes store
38:37a book store
38:38the various pubs
38:41around town
38:42they all have
38:43model cars
38:45diecast cars
38:46posters up
38:47flags up
38:47and we're just
38:48being notified
38:49we're going to see
38:49the green fly
38:50this time by
38:51back to racing
38:53at Circuit de la Salle
38:54third full course
38:55caution over
38:56let's go back racing
38:58car spun there
38:59I believe
38:59coming out of the
39:004th chicane
39:00there you see him
39:01getting turned around
39:02on coal tires
39:02maybe that'll be
39:03an issue for other
39:04cars here
39:05on this opening lap
39:06after that caution
39:07period
39:08very chilly temperatures
39:09cars have not been
39:11up to speed
39:11they're not on tires
39:12that have been in
39:13those tire ovens
39:15got to be really
39:16careful here
39:16on this opening lap
39:17see the cars
39:19they're also
39:20bottoming out
39:20when the tire
39:21pressures are lower
39:22the cars are running
39:23lower to the ground
39:24that creates a
39:25factor there too
39:26got to be so careful
39:27with the torque of
39:27these diesels
39:28Dorsey
39:28as you put the
39:29power down
39:30you can see him
39:31really skating around
39:32there's no stability
39:33in the car yet
39:33and like you said
39:34Calvin
39:35those are sparks
39:36because the tires
39:37are not up to
39:38pressure
39:38too low of road
39:40height
39:40right height
39:41let's have a look
39:43when we were coming
39:44to green
39:45at that car
39:46that spun
39:47this is on board
39:47the 73 Corvette
39:49hey
39:49it was one of the
39:50Ferraris
39:51that had no grip
39:53he went around
39:55real fast
39:56back on board
40:01the two
40:02Marcel Fessler
40:04following the 12
40:05of Neil Yarny
40:06former open
40:09wheel driver
40:09aboard that
40:10rebellion
40:11Toyota
40:11sits in the
40:12sixth place
40:13overall
40:14massive
40:15lock out there
40:15and a spin
40:16that's one of the
40:17was that one of the
40:17Peugeots
40:17I believe it was
40:18mate
40:18one of the Peugeots
40:19has gone
40:20which one
40:22no contact with
40:23anything but
40:24I think it was
40:25Davidson
40:25I think that's
40:26Anthony Davidson
40:27yeah that could be
40:28the leader of the
40:28race who's gone
40:29around
40:29Fessler was doing
40:30a great job there
40:31just dealing with
40:32the traffic
40:32being patient
40:33we talk about
40:34the fact that
40:35this diesel technology
40:36has he beached it
40:37he might have
40:38beached it
40:38sounded like he had
40:39wheel spin there
40:40we'll wait and see
40:42if it is Davidson
40:43or not
40:43we can't see
40:44with these
40:44cameras here
40:47trying to identify
40:48that car that is
40:49beached
40:49the nine car is in
40:50Paginot behind the
40:51wheel
40:52tires only
40:53and fuel
40:53we know that was
40:55Paginot coming in
40:57with the nine
40:58handing over
40:59to Simone Paginot
41:01I don't think it was
41:02one of the Peugeots
41:03you know we're hearing
41:04right now that it
41:04might have been level
41:05five
41:05the 33 car
41:07yeah that's got the
41:08dorsal fin on there
41:09too
41:09let's have a look
41:13at the replay
41:14there's car seven
41:15behind there is
41:16Ant Davidson
41:16behind
41:17it's 33
41:17it is the 33
41:19yeah
41:19cold tires spin
41:21again like we
41:21were talking about
41:22dark colored
41:24prototype there
41:25we all got
41:26big excited
41:26yeah
41:27and with the fin
41:28you know like you
41:29said
41:29there's not many
41:30of those out there
41:31now as he's stuck
41:33in the gravel
41:33probably is
41:34looks like he's
41:34dug in pretty good
41:35there
41:35very unusual to see
41:37that man make a
41:37mistake but as
41:38we've seen today
41:39even the best
41:40are making these
41:41tiny little errors
41:42it's all about the
41:43demands of the
41:44Le Mans 24 hour race
41:45got to be on your
41:46toes every second
41:47and this temperature
41:48is extraordinarily
41:49cold for this
41:51time of year
41:51and I think that's
41:53catching a lot of
41:54people out after
41:55these cautions
41:55remember a few years
41:57ago as Andre
41:58Lotterer looks on
41:59when Joao Barbosa
42:01drove for Martin
42:02Short's roll center
42:02racing in that
42:03jug powered
42:04Pescarolo where he
42:05really put himself
42:06on the map
42:07fighting some of the
42:08big name drivers
42:09and big name teams
42:10just missed out on
42:12standing on the
42:12podium overall
42:13Tom Kimber-Smith has
42:16done another good
42:16job in the Oak
42:18Racing 49
42:19the traditional pink
42:20of Oak Racing
42:21and this car
42:23continuing to surge
42:25on trying to get a
42:27podium in P2
42:28wonder what the update
42:32is on the 33 car
42:33for level five
42:34it's still there
42:35yeah I thought it
42:36would
42:36it really dug in
42:37this is in a dangerous
42:42spot here
42:43cars flashing through
42:46there I'm not sure
42:47if they're under a local
42:48yellow at that point
42:49but
42:49and through the Dunlop
42:53curbs there
42:54it's a hairy spot
42:55to be stuck on the
42:56side of the road
42:57the cars were at speed
42:58Justin
43:00Simon you just got out
43:06it's pretty cold isn't it
43:07put the jacket on
43:09yeah it's pretty cold
43:10the tyres
43:11I mean
43:12I'm on spawn on the
43:14safety car laps
43:16I've never experienced
43:17anything like this before
43:18it's tough out there
43:20so we decided to pit
43:21I didn't want to
43:23restart on those tyres
43:24I think it was the
43:26safest way
43:27and maybe the fastest
43:27so we'll see
43:28how it ends up
43:29but the car is nice
43:32it's behaving well
43:33I'm very happy overall
43:35it was nice to lead
43:36Le Mans
43:37for the first time
43:38and
43:38it's still a nine hour
43:41and a half to go
43:42so we'll see
43:43but inside the car
43:44all the systems are working
43:46I mean the traffic
43:48has it got into
43:48a better rhythm now
43:49yeah I mean
43:51the traffic is getting better
43:52so maybe
43:52I don't know
43:53maybe the drivers
43:54I was with
43:54were more experienced
43:55you never know
43:56sometimes
43:57you get the traffic
43:58in the right place
43:59sometimes not
43:59so it was a good stint
44:01good quadruple stint
44:03I enjoyed the car
44:04the car feels the same
44:05as it did at the beginning
44:06a little bit better handling
44:08which is
44:09very nice
44:11it is a very nice thing
44:14for the end of the race
44:15perfect
44:15now go and have a quadruple sleep
44:17yes
44:17now that was interesting guys
44:20I was thinking about that
44:21when they came in
44:22I was
44:23I was like
44:24well maybe they've done it
44:25because it's quicker for them
44:26to get back up to speed
44:28on tires that have been
44:29in the ovens
44:30than it is to
44:31fuss around
44:31and maybe risk the car going off
44:33anyway
44:33thank you
44:34my little thought was correct
44:35what do you think Dorsey
44:36well that temperature
44:38you heard him talk about it
44:39he said behind the pace car
44:40it was undrivable
44:41and that shows
44:42when we see
44:43Joao Barbosa
44:44who doesn't make
44:45very many mistakes
44:45have a spin like that
44:47it shows you how tough it is
44:48as here the car goes
44:49back underway
44:56finally Barbosa
44:57gets back out
44:58onto the racing surface
44:59and you saw car 7
45:00the Peugeot there
45:02the one that Anthony Davidson
45:03has been
45:04storming around
45:06this 8.5 mile track with
45:08come in for another
45:09regulation service
45:10routine stop for the 7
45:14and it's still
45:15Marcel Fassler
45:16at the top of the order
45:18fighting these surging Peugeots
45:20we need to take a quick break
45:21see you in a moment
45:22this July baseball's biggest stars
45:30will gather together
45:31in the Arizona desert
45:32for one spectacular night
45:33in the summer's biggest event
45:35as Fox brings you
45:36every thrilling moment
45:37of the 2011 MLB All-Star Game

45:46only on Fox
45:47on board with the Corvette
45:51number 73
45:52back up to speed here
45:53Antonio Garcia
45:54behind the wheel
45:55sunlight starting to peak
45:58through Dorsey
45:58this is a great moment
45:59for the drivers
46:00it is
46:00this is magic right now
46:01this time of day
46:02it's awesome
46:03all the guys
46:04getting out of their tents
46:05now
46:06seeing what daylight looks like
46:08big hangover
46:09then you realize
46:11there's nine and a half
46:12hours to go
46:13yeah
46:13exactly
46:14oh that's the truth
46:17spectacular shots here
46:22Garcia what a job he has done
46:25fitting into this Corvette squad
46:26very very nicely indeed
46:28he's on quite a tear
46:30a couple of years ago
46:30winning all of the big enduro's
46:32you know for the people
46:34who have never been to Le Mans before
46:36unlike the races we have
46:37in the United States
46:38Le Mans still has those
46:39little mushroom tents
46:40thousands of them
46:41all over the place
46:42people camping out everywhere
46:43it's the way it started
46:45you know
46:45it's the way
46:46old school
46:47neat racetrack
46:49you have to come here
46:49see how PA Lee Diffie
46:51is back with some coffee
46:52do you know what's really
46:55good about this year
46:56is in the Le Mans
46:57the official Le Mans program
46:58there's about a three page
46:59article on Danny Binks
47:01it's fantastic
47:02I was going to say
47:02he looks like a movie star
47:04doesn't he
47:04it's a really
47:05really good
47:06really good article
47:07about Danny
47:07he could be a bank robber
47:09or something
47:10what is difficult
47:14to articulate
47:16and to really
47:17do justice to
47:19is the love
47:20of the Corvette race car
47:22the French fans have
47:23at Le Mans
47:24when this car rolls out
47:25these two cars roll out
47:27at scrutineering
47:27it's unbelievable
47:29they are like rock stars
47:30the 10 is back in
47:33Olivier Panis
47:36behind the wheel
47:37again you see
47:39the servicing that
47:40can be done
47:43the windshield's being
47:43cleaned
47:44the data card
47:45is being replaced
47:45in the left side door
47:46there refueling
47:47is going on
47:48brake and tire
47:49technicians
47:49are allowed
47:51to inspect the car
47:52but not conduct
47:52any work
47:53until the refueling
47:54is complete
47:55just waiting on fuel
47:59now this is taking
48:00a long time
48:01they've got a bigger
48:01fuel flow
48:02or a faster fuel
48:04flow with these cars
48:06since the last round
48:06at Spa
48:07that fuel should be
48:08going in
48:08a little bit quicker
48:10almost looks like
48:13the front air jack
48:14hasn't got
48:15enough lift
48:16for them to get
48:17the tire
48:18I've had a lot of
48:18struggle there
48:19getting that tire
48:20removed
48:20one thing that the
48:21Peugeot with this
48:22908 they changed
48:23after the first
48:24couple of years
48:25they were really
48:25struggling to get
48:26that wheel
48:27inside the wheel
48:28lights
48:28there really wasn't
48:29like enough droop
48:29to really get it on
48:30there
48:30they were wasting
48:31a lot of valuable
48:31time
48:32kind of looked like
48:33what had happened
48:33right there
48:34it just wasn't
48:35enough droop
48:35in there
48:36it hung up
48:37so many little
48:45things on these
48:46pit stops
48:46that just have
48:48to go right
48:48hasn't been the
48:49smoothness to run
48:49for these guys
48:50we expect them
48:51to be sort of
48:51like just sneaking
48:52around the back
48:53of the factory
48:54diesels
48:54they knew that
49:05they didn't have
49:05the pace on track
49:07to go with the
49:09with the six
49:09factory cars
49:10the three Audis
49:11the three Peugeots
49:12but they thought
49:13they may have been
49:14a little bit closer
49:15that front end
49:16damage certainly
49:16did not help
49:17a little earlier on
49:18well Pan is very
49:20frustrated when he
49:21got out of the car
49:21after a stint
49:22in the middle of the
49:23night so we knew
49:23all was not well
49:25there
49:25but they'll continue
49:27to battle
49:28let's climb aboard
49:30with Antonio Garcia
49:32second chicane
49:38on the Mulsanne
49:39the familiar helmet
49:43of Olivier Beretta
49:44and that's good news
49:45for his teammates
49:46because they were
49:47thinking they may
49:47have to go the rest
49:48of the way
49:48without the help
49:49of Beretta
49:50so he's been off
49:51to the medical unit
49:53and Corvette
49:53have their own
49:54doctor there as well
49:55and he has obviously
49:56been given the all clear
49:57he didn't feel well
49:58with that lengthy
49:58caution period
49:59he was sitting right
49:59behind the pace car
50:00they believed he was
50:01sucking in the fumes
50:02at low speed
50:03the car's era
50:04works differently then
50:05sure they put him
50:07on oxygen
50:07the whole time
50:08he's been resting
50:09up there
50:09get him back to normal
50:11I've had that same
50:12problem
50:12that's just miserable
50:14to get that
50:14joao's still behind
50:16the wheel there
50:17Dorsey sorry
50:17and quick spin
50:19they'll be checking
50:19out the car
50:20very impressive run
50:21for this car
50:22I mean
50:22the HPD has really
50:24been talked about
50:25in terms of not
50:25having the straightaway
50:26speed that was
50:27necessary in this class
50:28and they're just
50:30going to clear out
50:30all the gravel
50:31make sure nothing's
50:32stuck in one of
50:32those brake calipers
50:33you know
50:34had not it got stuck
50:35in the gravel trap
50:36it would have been
50:37no big deal
50:37but that unfortunately
50:39is what Le Mans
50:40is all about
50:40there are all these
50:41gravel traps
50:41you can get stuck in
50:42and you know Ken Swan
50:45the team manager here
50:46who works hand in hand
50:47with David Stone
50:48and Jean Marchione
50:49said we know
50:51based on the raw speed
50:53of the Nissan power plant
50:55we know we're not
50:56going to win this race
50:57on out and out speed
50:58but we've come to Le Mans
51:00with a very healthy
51:01spares package
51:02if we know
51:03we're going to have to
51:04race with our elbows
51:05out a little bit
51:05get a little bit physical
51:07we might have to tear
51:08a little bit of equipment
51:09up but we've got
51:10plenty of spares
51:10we're going to be ready
51:11through the Porsche curves
51:18this is a hairy part
51:19of the racetrack
51:20in a GTE machine
51:21don't have the
51:22downforce of the
51:23prototypes
51:23you really got to
51:24feel the car through
51:25there
51:25feed the power in
51:26well Rebellion Racing
51:29has officially retired
51:31the 13
51:32after that crash
51:34we kind of
51:36knew that
51:38when we saw
51:38the whole under tray
51:39and everything
51:39torn off of that car
51:40when they towed it back
51:41it's not going to be
51:42an easy fix
51:43again there's a rule
51:44that the driver has to
51:45stay within 10 meters
51:46of the race car as well
51:47I think the driver had abandoned ship
51:48there so
51:49Doug Lath there
51:51just making sure that Olivier is good to go
51:53both Corvettes running really really strong
51:56obviously the 74 right front
51:57that brake change
51:59a couple of the other guys back on the lead lab
52:01waiting for things to cycle here
52:03I think things may have shaken out
52:04they may still have a full lab lead over the rest of the GTE Pro field
52:07this is the P2
52:10front one of the two front running class cars
52:14David Halliday stays behind of the wheel of the Team Orica
52:17Matt Moot machine
52:18and the disappointment on the P1 side
52:22is being lifted and balanced
52:23by the strong performance
52:25of that 48 car in LMP2
52:28back in a moment
52:29after almost 15 hours down
52:40in this 2011 24 hours of Le Mans
52:42still the top four cars on the lead lap
52:46we knew we were going to be in for a good race
52:48after practice and qualifying
52:49it's the same in GT Pro as well
52:53let's talk about the Corvette Cam
52:55well the number 73 is in
53:03and if you're a VIP
53:04this is the view you can enjoy
53:05from the Corvette suite
53:08right above their pit stall
53:10get a good look here
53:12they are doing the refueling
53:13cleaning that windscreen
53:15looks like they are going to go after tires
53:17do they have them ready
53:17nope they have elected
53:18to go ahead and release the car
53:21now once again
53:22this is where the VIPs can hang out
53:24you can have a good look at the TV
53:26maybe grab yourself a bit of a drink
53:28at the bar
53:29have yourself a little bit of a snack
53:31at the buffet
53:31and just kick back and enjoy things
53:34this is where the high rollers
53:35come and play here
53:37for Corvette here
53:38in their 100th anniversary year
53:40and their 10th anniversary
53:41of their first win
53:42and being high rollers in here
53:44every one of them at this point
53:45is asking
53:46what the heck is he doing here
53:48basically this is getting
53:50everything you can
53:51out of your TV credential
53:52nice place
53:53keep milking it mate
53:55that's the way to do it
53:56you know there's so many
53:58significant
53:58points for Corvette racing
54:01at Le Mans
54:02this year
54:022011
54:04also marks Corvette's
54:0555th year
54:06in international road racing
54:09there's so many
54:10magical milestones
54:11for the manufacturer
54:12that it would be
54:13100% appropriate
54:15for the Corvette C6R
54:17to be victorious
54:17at Les Arpes
54:18again this year
54:19looking good right now
54:22Ollie Gavin
54:23behind the wheel
54:24of the lead Corvette
54:25you saw him get
54:26caught a little bit
54:27unprepared
54:28when they dived in
54:29with Richard Westbrook
54:30and Ollie had to get in the car
54:31without his gloves on
54:32but under yellow
54:32I'm sure he sorted that out
54:34before he's back
54:34under green flag running
54:36we're on board now
54:36with a 73 car
54:37Antonio Garcia
54:38after that pit stop
54:39decides to stay in the car
54:41so no driver change
54:42and stayed on the same
54:43set of rubber
54:4471 AF Corsa Ferrari
54:46458
54:47this is the car
54:48that's been in the middle
54:49of everything
54:51of everything
54:52and it's
54:52had a spotlight
54:53put on it
54:54that's for sure
54:55it's the car
54:56that NASCAR star
54:58Michael Waltrip
54:59is in
54:59it's also the car
55:00that was in the middle
55:01of the mayhem
55:01with Mike Rockenfella
55:03when Rob Kaufman
55:04was behind the wheel
55:05see the guy to the right
55:07there in the blue
55:07kind of hoodie there
55:08that's Giuseppe Petrata
55:09spoke to him the other day
55:11he's the technical director
55:12for AF Corsa
55:13and he really felt
55:15that this 458
55:16even though it's
55:17improving over 24 hours
55:19he said we have
55:19a lot of speed
55:20we've sorted out
55:21some of the gremlins
55:22with the alternator
55:23and other things
55:23that we had earlier
55:24in the year
55:24there we see Justin
55:25having a chat
55:26with Michael Waltrip
55:27he's got a big smile
55:28on his face
55:28he certainly enjoyed
55:29this experience Dorsey
55:30as we knew he would
55:31I think he's totally
55:32awed by the experience
55:33you could tell that
55:34last night
55:35when he was talking about
55:35that gives us
55:36such a big deal
55:38Justin
55:44yeah I'm here mate
55:49I'm standing here
55:50with Rob Kaufman
55:51Rob I'm just going to
55:52pull you to the front
55:52of the garage a bit
55:53your car's in
55:54clutch issues
55:56it seems that the guys
55:57are working pretty hard
55:58to get it back out there
55:59we'd like to really
55:59finish the race
56:00so it's been an
56:01interesting evening for us
56:02so we'd like to get
56:03the guys back out there
56:04we'll see how it goes
56:05interesting is certainly
56:07a word to describe it
56:08for you
56:09in your words
56:11what did you feel
56:12what did you see
56:13what didn't you see
56:13when the incident happened
56:15well we're out there
56:17in the dark
56:18and those prototypes
56:19come up pretty quick
56:20and those are very
56:21strong headlights
56:21in the back of them
56:22and the rules
56:24the rules here are
56:25stick with your racing line
56:27and the prototypes
56:28will go around you
56:29and that's what I did
56:29that happened to be
56:30one of the worst parts
56:31of the track
56:32it could possibly happen at
56:33you know
56:34thank God really
56:35Rockefeller's okay
56:36and you know
56:37no one was hurt in it
56:38and you know
56:40it's an unfortunate
56:41racing incident
56:41we didn't touch
56:43but you know
56:44it's still a bad situation
56:45a rumor is that
56:47the ACO have asked you
56:48to step down
56:49for the rest of the race
56:50is that true
56:50or not
56:51they asked me
56:53to sit out
56:54the rest of the race
56:55but the car could continue
56:56which I think
56:57it's not a matter
56:59of agreeing or disagreeing
57:00with their rules
57:00and we respect the ACO
57:02it's a tremendous venue here
57:03and I mean
57:05you have to look at it
57:06you are the equivalent
57:08of the US Open here
57:09or whatever massive sporting event
57:12you want to compare it to
57:13so you have to respect
57:14what the organizers
57:15go for in the end
57:16and that's a good way
57:16of looking at it
57:17absolutely
57:17it's a privilege to be here
57:19we hope to come back
57:19I think they appreciated that
57:21and hopefully will invite us
57:23back again in the future
57:24but we still want to finish
57:25the race today
57:26Michael's enthusiasm
57:27is contagious
57:28for the drive out there
57:30you put a lot of effort
57:31in being here
57:32and certainly would like
57:33to have you come back
57:35but one thing to show
57:36I know you're 100
57:37and well
57:38a thousand percent
57:38more knowledgeable
57:39than you were
57:40well 14 hours ago
57:42this isn't a track
57:43you can practice on
57:43you have to come here
57:44yeah
57:44well done Rob
57:45thanks
57:46see you later
57:46that's pretty cool
57:49he kind of took it
57:49on the chin there
57:50it's been a difficult day
57:51for him
57:52great to see that
57:53he's still smiling
57:54and looking forward
57:55to see his car
57:55see the checkered flag
57:56and you know
57:58rookies around this place
57:59and the speed of the
58:00prototypes door
58:01see these incidents
58:02we see them happen
58:03time and time again
58:04but obviously the
58:05consequences today
58:06have been a lot more
58:06severe than we've seen
58:07in the past
58:08and part of that
58:10and we talked about
58:11at the opening of the show
58:12is the change in the rules
58:14the change in the classifications
58:15and so forth
58:16that these cars nowadays
58:17you have to take
58:18a little bit more risk
58:19but it's not a forgiving circuit
58:21that's for sure
58:22stretch up the front
58:42one more time
58:43Fessler has the margin
58:46over Davidson
58:47Bourdais
58:48and Manassian
58:49at the moment
58:49they're out
58:51cars on the lead lap
58:53and there is
58:53Marcel Fessler
58:54so he's done the hard yards
58:56through the dark
58:57he's seen the light
58:57there's some
58:58good times ahead
59:00and
59:01it should be
59:02Andre Lodera
59:03to step in next
59:04for Fessler
59:05this is the battle
59:06this is the battle
59:06for the lead
59:07this is how tight it is
59:08Anthony Davison
59:10less than a second
59:11behind Fessler
59:11now
59:12he's going to start
59:13to put the pressure on
59:14we saw him make a move
59:15a little bit earlier
59:16in the evening
59:16where the straightaway speed
59:18we talk about the Peugeot
59:20being a little bit more
59:21trimmed out
59:21aerodynamically
59:22doesn't have the downforce
59:23but doesn't have the drag
59:24down the straightaways
59:25Dorsey
59:25and we saw it draft up
59:27on the two car
59:28a little bit earlier
59:29and make the move
59:29let's see what happens here
59:31that pass was easy
59:32I'm wondering if this one
59:33will be such
59:34Marcel saying
59:35oh not you again
59:37yeah exactly
59:38didn't I already do this one
59:40how many times
59:41in my stint
59:42do we have to go
59:43do we have to cycle
59:44through this
59:44you'd have to think
59:46that Anthony Davison
59:47he was in a position
59:49last year
59:49where he's in catch-up mode
59:50and I don't think
59:51I've ever seen
59:52anyone drive here
59:54at 110%
59:56like Anthony did
59:56there for an hour
59:57or so
59:57he'd have to try
59:57and he's in catch-up mode
00:01and he's in catch-upSee
00:02and he's in catch-up mode
00:03so
00:04I'm sure
00:04I'm sure
00:05you boca
00:06you
00:06can't
00:07see
00:08he's in catch-up mode
00:09I'm sure
00:09I'm sure
00:10you
00:10can't
00:11you
00:12can't
00:12then
00:12I
00:12can't
00:13you
00:15can't
00:17get
