00:00There's no doubt that 21st century man has come a long way from our hunter-gatherer origins.
00:12Come on, it's right in here. We've got the annual service on the boiler.
00:16In Britain today, we take food, shelter and warmth for granted.
00:21And most of us consume rather than create.
00:24I want to find out what happens if you strip man of all the luxuries and the conveniences of modern living
00:31and then force them to fight for their very existence.
00:39Thirteen British men have been abandoned on a remote Pacific desert island.
00:44With just the clothes to stand up in and a few basic tools.
00:48There's one there.
00:50Whoa!
00:51He's great!
00:52Ah!
00:54These guys are completely alone, filming everything themselves.
00:59OK, got it.
01:02This isn't about talk, this is about action.
01:04If you think you can do it, prove it.
01:07One wrong move.
01:10And this place will take you down.
01:14When pushed to the extreme, do they still have what it takes to survive?
01:20Can't believe it!
01:21This is dangerous.
01:22Coming in!
01:23Coming in, Grace!
01:25Coming in, Grace!
01:26Coming in, Grace!
01:27Coming in, Grace!
01:31Three weeks ago, 13 British men were cast away on this remote Pacific island.
01:57Get her foot on.
01:58They're alone, with no provisions and only a handful of basic tools.
02:04So we've got three knives.
02:05Three knives, three machetes.
02:07Yeah, that's it.
02:08Three of the men are trained and experienced cameramen.
02:11I'll pass the camera up to you.
02:12But they are living under exactly the same conditions as everyone else.
02:18So far, these 13 British guys have survived for three weeks totally alone on this desert island.
02:24You know, that's no mean feat.
02:26But they're now divided on how to find food.
02:29Tonight, Saki and Dan are going out to find Cayman.
02:32I've opted out of Cayman hunting.
02:35Without unity...
02:36There's a lot of people just sitting around doing f***ing bull, really.
02:39...and no clear sense of direction.
02:41The men are sabotaging their own chances of survival.
02:44If you're not looking for food, why shouldn't you get any?
02:46Mate, come on, why are you here?
02:47It will become Lord of the Flies.
02:49And then we'll start sticking some of the weaker ones on a raft and send them off to another island.
02:52Hey, go up, don't walk away.
02:54I actually think that the hardest part of survival, harder than finding the food, is keeping everybody together.
03:00I'm so hungry now.
03:02The truth is, if they don't start working together, looking after each other, thinking smart, being resourceful and surviving,
03:09they haven't got a cat's chance to make it to the end of this month.
03:12Good morning, it's Saturday, the 22nd of February.
03:32Just another clear sky, sun just rising.
03:37We're running out of food.
03:40We're running out of energy.
03:42We're running out of drive.
03:44One of the guys even suggested, I mean, this horrified me, that we're thriving.
03:50It really needed dipping his head in the Pacific, and I would have done it a few years ago.
03:57I've ensured this island has enough water, animals and vegetation on it to keep the men alive,
04:02but only if they have the ingenuity to find it, catch it and kill it.
04:08What's the catch, mate?
04:09Nothing, mate.
04:10Nothing?
04:11No.
04:12Ah!
04:19The fish catch was sucked, it was shit, but we still have to focus on getting food for today.
04:23Now in their fourth week, the group has fractured, and food is scarce as a result.
04:28Oysters are almost out, fish is, uh, comes in, comes out, feast or famine.
04:34Uh, we've got no carbohydrate left on the island that we know of.
04:37Okay, so are we really doing more slugs around the island?
04:41We're going to eat or die.
04:42It's quite interesting what's happened in the last few days, because the group is beginning
04:46to split, essentially.
04:47It's incredible.
04:48We're just not eating enough.
04:49We're just not eating enough.
04:50We're just not eating enough.
04:52Whatever shape, form or fashion it takes, we need someone to focus our group of 13 men.
04:58Now the dwindling supplies of food are seeing the men's bodies begin to shut down.
05:05I'm not even kidding.
05:07My experience in the toilet this morning was like trying to squeeze a watermelon through
05:10a straw, which is becoming a little bit more of a common occurrence than one that I'm not
05:16particularly enjoying.
05:17It's the diet we're eating, it's the lack of fibre, lack of fruit, it's the dehydration
05:22which just sucks moisture out of everything in your body, and some people are really,
05:25really suffering.
05:25When I go to the toilet, water comes out first, and then what I'm going to describe
05:31as dried up hay that is way too big to actually the size of my bum hole.
05:39What you've got is a very severe constipation, impacted stool with overflow diarrhoea.
05:45It's a dehydration which is just sucking moisture out of everything that it can inside the body.
05:50You've had the same.
05:50And Sam had to use a stick to prise his out like a shoehorn.
05:58Well, thanks for sharing the stick, the stick piece of the motion, it's true.
06:01What do we do about it?
06:02We don't have any laxatives.
06:03We've tried the natural laxatives, we haven't got that many figs we're running out.
06:05We've tried having several coconuts a day.
06:08So the only thing that I can think of left is the pipe of justice.
06:14Using a water bottle and pipe they found washed up on the beach,
06:18Dr Sam has fashioned an enema kit.
06:23So I'll just lay on the floor, I'll stick the pipe up the bum,
06:25and then Sam just squeezes the liquid in, I suppose.
06:35Oh, my.
06:35Oh, my.
06:43Jeez, that is not easy to get up.
06:45Hold it.
06:48You ready?
06:48Yeah.
06:49That feels weird.
06:53Yeah.
06:53All right, now I'm just going to gently push it in, okay?
06:57Oh, my Lord.
07:01Whoa.
07:04Flipping heck, that is really weird.
07:10Put it on tight so it doesn't all come out.
07:14Ah.
07:14Oh, my.
07:19Good Lord.
07:22I try and hold it up there for a bit.
07:24Some of it will be absorbed, some of it will hopefully just soften that stall up and then...
07:27Right.
07:28...and then go and get it out.
07:34It's definitely done something.
07:36What it's done, I don't know.
07:37Well, Dan waits for the enema to take effect.
07:42Fish.
07:44It's every man for himself in their quest to find breakfast.
07:48I want to get it quick.
07:49Dan.
07:50I mean, the thing is, we're out of coconuts.
07:54We've reached pretty much all the low-reaching ones that we can get with sticks and bashing.
07:57So what I'm going to do is just work my way up.
08:00This goes around you so you can kind of lean back on the tree, that kind of thing.
08:03I'm having to use my strong sphincter control to hold that water up my bum.
08:11Extreme hunger affects not only, obviously, your physical strength, but also your decision-making ability.
08:18Go on, Rain.
08:19And it can become this vicious downward spiral where you get weaker, you get less strength, you make less good decisions.
08:27I've got it going, mate.
08:28And therefore your hunting abilities plummet.
08:32Oh, my goodness.
08:36Worked amazingly.
08:39Yeah.
08:41Yeah.
08:49I need some energy, but I'm massively lacking energy.
08:56My muscles and my legs, my arms just feel dead.
09:01We are starving.
09:04We really need to focus or come up with a way of getting more food for the group because I don't think we're doing that great.
09:14And it's affected the mood in the camp.
09:16People are just so lethargic.
09:19People are just doing head-in.
09:21There's not enough communication.
09:23There's certain people in the group who will just do something for themselves.
09:27And now, all of a sudden, I feel hungry.
09:29And I mean painfully hungry.
09:31I can't think straight.
09:36Stingray!
09:36Stingray!
09:42I'm just going to do one, two, three, and I'm going to bring him out, OK?
09:45Yeah, go on.
09:45OK, all right, all right.
09:47OK, OK, I've got it.
09:48OK, I've got it, I've got it.
09:49With the group hungry and fragmented, a fresh catch is a lifeline for the men.
09:56Animal lover Ryan has spotted the killing on his camera.
10:00We've just caught a stingray.
10:02We didn't kill it straight away like they should have done.
10:04We get fish in our gillnets.
10:07Bang on.
10:08Amazing.
10:09What could go wrong?
10:11What the fuck is he doing?
10:12The quickest way to kill a stingray is to drive a sharp knife between his eyes.
10:19Are there any other knives in the camp?
10:20You just can't find any knives anywhere.
10:23What are you doing?
10:24Will somebody please put it out of its misery?
10:28OK, well, grab a knife.
10:29Come on, stab it in its head, man.
10:31OK, wait, look, it's just come to get a rock and it's done a knife.
10:33Calm down.
10:35Calm down.
10:36Fuck's sake.
10:37Hey, hey, hey, stop.
10:39Ryan, you need to grab a hold of yourself.
10:40Man.
10:40That's it.
10:42That was horrific.
10:44Stop for a second and just breathe.
10:45This isn't about you, mate.
10:47I know it's not about me.
10:48It's about that stingray, suffering.
10:49I want to stand out of the strain to you.
10:51We haven't got a knife.
10:53They didn't have one.
10:54Why are you running me down the beach?
10:56What point are I fucking shit in the face?
10:57I've run me down the beach ten times.
10:58Ryan, I think you need to go away and take ten minutes.
11:00What are you sniggling?
11:02What, did you just fucking do a wanker sign towards me?
11:05Fuck you.
11:06Well, I know you've got half of that.
11:10What's going on, mate?
11:12Talk to me, right?
11:14You fucking made a right meal for killing that stingray.
11:17Why are you putting at me?
11:18Why would I do that?
11:19I'm pointing the big Tony finger at you.
11:21Then you got Vooca walking past.
11:23Fucking doing a wanker sign at me.
11:25Yeah, that was out of order.
11:27Doing a wanker sign.
11:28It doesn't have that.
11:29I know, it's thick.
11:30You are not finding the physical side of this difficult.
11:32The side that you find difficult is dealing with people like him without losing your shit,
11:36without putting him a wanker, without driving him off into the jungle if we were indefinitely,
11:40to die and starve on his own as a lonely man.
11:42You know, that is, that's the challenge for you.
11:43That's the personal challenge for you.
11:47It really doesn't take much for groups to split apart.
11:50You know, it's often small differences make great chasms.
11:53But now things have got so bad, even a fresh food catch can't heal the group.
11:58It wouldn't have really mattered whether it was a stingray in the net or a UFO landing on the island.
12:06I think the point is that tensions are now running high.
12:09We're a ship without a rudder, and we need someone to grab that rudder and get this camp in good working order.
12:16We desperately need a leader now.
12:17The 13 men are in their fourth week of survival.
12:32Extreme hunger and a division about how best to find food has pulled the group apart.
12:38So are we really doing more slugs round the island or die?
12:43Even a successful catch hasn't healed the broken group.
12:49What did you just do a wanker saying towards me?
12:52I think the point is that tensions are now running high.
12:55We desperately need a leader now.
12:59In the wild, when people are under pressure and your life is on the line,
13:03you've got to do all you can to keep a group cohesive and together.
13:08Tony, I'd like to call a meeting in 15 minutes.
13:12Because when it's together, it's strong.
13:14It's not strong when it's fragmented and broken.
13:18I'd like to call a meeting. I'm here.
13:2243-year-old director Matt lives with his partner and daughter in East London
13:27and has some experience of filming in hostile environments.
13:31It says conflict every day, and it's Lord of the Flies, essentially.
13:35There's a risk of not working together as a cohesive team.
13:38That's the nightmare situation.
13:40What I'd like to think is that we're all pretty sensible and we all get on with it
13:44and we all thrive in the environment and really make something good happen.
13:51There's just something on my mind I wanted to sort of share with you.
13:54I think it's no secret that there are fracture lines appearing within our group.
13:59That's no secret.
14:00We could think about electing a leader, someone who can, you know, bring unity to all of us.
14:08I think we're too late into this to suddenly come up with a whole new structure which is going to turn everything on.
14:11Well, I disagree with you. I sort of believe in seizing the moment.
14:14And I think this is the moment to seize it.
14:16I think it's way too late.
14:16Mate, I think this is the time to seize the moment.
14:18And, you know, if we're going to let this moment pass, then I think we're all doing ourselves a disservice.
14:24If a leader is elected, it would be a leader's job to make sure that everyone is doing the things they've undertaken to do.
14:31I fully understand why you're saying it, because I agree that we are kind of drifting.
14:37I mean, I agree we need to go out and do stuff, but that's down to your personal responsibility and commitment to this project on every single person.
14:43I think a leader's a really bad idea.
14:45It's not like we all have to be, like, all hail to the leader and be scared of him or anything like that.
14:50But that's not what we've been told to do, though.
14:52Can I finish, please, please.
14:52Yeah.
14:53But it's an argument, Dan.
14:56I know, but you don't...
14:57The way that conversation goes is one person says something and the other person says something.
15:00It goes like that one, backwards and forwards, rather than speak over the top.
15:04Matt also proposes the elected leader organises a party to unite the group.
15:10To stitch those fracture lines together and come back together again as a group of 13.
15:16We could just say we have a project, and that is the sorting out of our camp and the preparation for a celebration.
15:24So would it be a better comment to say we're electing a project manager rather than a leader?
15:28If you're going to call it a project manager and someone's in charge of building up for the celebration, it's fine.
15:33If that's something we should all vote upon rather than voting for a leader, then maybe that's the way forward.
15:37I will second your proposal.
15:39Thank you, Terry.
15:40I'll second your proposal.
15:41Shall we put it to a vote, gentlemen?
15:44Those in favour, put your arms in the air, please.
15:48Pretty unanimous.
15:49That's fantastic, guys.
15:50Can I suggest that those who want to put their names forward as a candidate do so now?
16:03Chris?
16:04Thanks, CB.
16:05CB.
16:11Sam?
16:12I'll go for it.
16:18I'm going to put my name forward as well.
16:23Let's get on something you say.
16:25Come on, guys.
16:26Excellent.
16:27Excellent.
16:28Hey.
16:30Bruce, put yourself up for leadership.
16:33I don't want to be a leader.
16:34I didn't come here to be a leader.
16:35Sounds like it.
16:36No, I don't think that we need one.
16:38I think we just need a bit more sense of personal responsibility for everybody to get us through to the end now.
16:41So, just had a very interesting meeting about appointing a, well, Bridget's not as a leader, but I think Rupert's very uncomfortable with that term.
16:54Essentially, it is a leader, but we've called it a project manager.
16:57How did you think the meeting went up?
17:03Rupert was very opposed to being, to their being a leader, having assumed that role in Sam for most of the last three weeks.
17:12Across the island, four of the men are preparing for their first election.
17:21Let's go through the candidates.
17:23We've got Zaki, Doc Sam, Fletch and Chris Burrows.
17:30Let me deal with Chris Burrows.
17:33I'm not too sure about his team leadership skills.
17:39CB definitely has the skills.
17:41He has a vision and he's very humane.
17:46And I won't be voting for him.
17:48Zaki, observe Zaki, and I think Zaki will be a good project leader, manager.
17:58Yeah, we're playing with words between leader, aren't we, yeah?
18:01Who are you voting for? Who are you voting for?
18:03I'm going to wait until I hear their manifestos.
18:05Yeah, absolutely.
18:07He certainly is a floating voter at the moment.
18:10Sam has been tirelessly enthusiastic.
18:13But he can't actually say to people, come on, mate.
18:17It's about motivation. It's not about telling people what to do.
18:20It's about motivating them to do it.
18:22We then come to Mike Fletcher.
18:25I think Fletcher would be brilliant, that's it.
18:27Because he's decisive, he's hard-working, he's practical.
18:31Mike Fletcher and I don't get on.
18:34Mike Fletcher, you're not a leader.
18:37You're just full of bullshit.
18:46So, Rupert, what are you opting, mate?
18:47Looking for small round voting tokens for the upcoming somewhat pointless election.
18:55You think it's pointless?
18:57For the last two and a half weeks, you virtually did become the leader, Rupert.
19:01Yeah, I don't know, I mean, I guess maybe I don't think that actually needs to be kind of elected for that to work.
19:05I think kind of leadership comes naturally, in a way.
19:08I think electing somebody is difficult.
19:11I'm glad that you don't want to be the leader.
19:15He's a control freak.
19:17He thinks he knows best all the time.
19:19He's just basically an arsehole.
19:23Right, everyone, welcome to the first Shirley Island election.
19:27One by one, the candidates outline their vision for a united, efficient camp.
19:35Right, so we're all supposed to come up with a manifesto about how we're going to run this project.
19:41I don't have a manifesto.
19:43I have a work ethic.
19:44Everybody around the room has got a vision.
19:48I would go around everybody individually and speak to them, one-on-one, what they would like to do.
19:52We need to share the same idea.
19:54Our ideas need to be collective.
19:56I'm not here to bark orders at people.
19:59All I'm asking, you give up your best.
20:02Everybody should be able to look each other in the eye, shake hands, and say,
20:07we may have had our differences, but I respect you.
20:11The only thing I would do would be to facilitate the smoother running and efficiency of this camp
20:18so that over there, by that bonfire, we have 13 torches, we light that fire,
20:22we sing at the top of our voices, and we leave with our hands held motherfucking high.
20:30That was powerful, man.
20:32All four men have made their pleas, but there's a last-minute candidate.
20:36Right.
20:37All right.
20:38Let's go for it, Ryan.
20:38The people who stepped forward, I honestly looked and I thought, you know what, I can do a better job than they can.
20:47So I've stepped up.
20:49All right, everyone.
20:49I know people might think it's a bit of a joke, a bit of a joke candidate,
20:53but I really do think this is my time to shine.
20:56Basically, I don't really like to be organised, but the thing is, when I want to be, I can be very hyper-organised.
21:03And I'd like the chance to prove to you all that I'm not a complete tosser
21:07and that I could do it and I could make a good job.
21:10Okay.
21:11Very good.
21:11That's great, Matt.
21:12Well done.
21:14Each candidate has his own token.
21:17So, for example, Saki has almonds, Ryan has snails, Sam has shells, Fletch has inedible nuts
21:25and CB has a nice, delicate piece of palm leaf.
21:30Each member of the group must now vote, placing their chosen token in the coconut ballot box.
21:39I'm really excited.
21:41I'm very excited.
21:42Shall I get the coconut?
21:44Release the coconut.
21:45Release the coconut.
21:46There's something left of the lottery on a Saturday night, innit?
21:49Here we go.
21:50In wilderness situations, when everything is on the line, you really see what matters in a leader.
21:56And if the men are to survive the rest of their time on the island,
21:59electing the right leader could make all the difference.
22:03Matt is the official returning officer.
22:06Whoever does win this, I think it's really important that we all get behind them.
22:11You know, even if it's not our favourite candidate and stuff like that.
22:14Well said, Cliff.
22:15Well said.
22:16And the winner is...
22:21I'm really excited.
22:39I'm very excited.
22:40Shall I get the coconut?
22:41Here we go.
22:42It's not the nationality on a Saturday night, innit?
22:44Here we go.
22:45The 13 men are in their fourth week of island survival.
22:50Extreme hunger and a division about how best to find food has pulled the group apart.
22:57In a bid to push them back together, they have elected a leader.
23:02And the winner is...
23:05And the winner is...
23:07I hope that I make you all proud at the end of this fucking journey and we can all say that we came, we saw and we conquered.
23:12Well said.
23:13Well said.
23:14Oh, fair night.
23:26Saki absolutely cleaned up.
23:27You've got seven votes.
23:28The rest of us have got six to share between us.
23:29So I'm really, really pleased.
23:30And I think he bridges that gap between the two groups that are splintering off a little
23:33bit.
23:34He's pally with the younger lot, but he's also got respect to the older contingent.
23:35So I think it'd be really good to bring them together.
23:36A leader serves, essentially.
23:37It's not there to kind of sit on the throne.
23:38It's there to serve people.
23:39And I remember always being told that nobody cares how much you know until they know how
23:46much you care.
23:47And for a leader, that is critical.
23:48That people know you care for them.
23:49It looks at times as if our group wasn't even going to agree on having a leader.
23:52But let's make no mistake.
23:53I mean, I've had to make no mistake.
23:54I mean, the two groups are splintering off a little bit.
23:56And the two groups are splintering off a little bit.
23:58He's pally with the younger lot, but he's also got respect to the older contingent.
24:01So I think it'd be really good to bring them together.
24:03A leader serves, essentially.
24:04It's not there to kind of sit on the throne, it's there to serve people.
24:08but let's make no mistake we do have a leader we don't have a project manager
24:12we have a leader for the 13 men on shorley island and his name is saki
24:25morning right the business i suppose it's saki's first day as leader we need to gather the food
24:35to improve their chances of survival he's delegating tasks to the men so they can find
24:40food more efficiently i'd like to stay on oysters how many people would you need with you to do that
24:46just one other person who wants to do oysters with rupus i'm happy to do oysters i think we were all
24:52in agreement speaking to everybody last night that the first two courses of action should be
24:59to get the water and the firewood sorted can i suggest we get the nets in first
25:04just if there's fish sitting there it won't take long just pull them in and get them out
25:09it's like 20 minutes but it won't take long for the firewood either i say we go with the firewoods
25:14who just like fish on a little on the line that's all
25:20yeah i understand that yeah but if we take 20 minutes to do the firewoods it's not really
25:27going to compromise the fish and another thing i need to say is everybody has siesta time during
25:33that time you can do whatever the you like sleep sunbathe you can wank
25:37do whatever you like i'll just make a point your job's project manager siesta time kind of
25:43doesn't fall under that yeah but this is just reassurance mate yeah no i'm just reassuring
25:47people because everybody was everybody was worried about this what your role is yeah everyone was
25:51worried about the leader saying no you have to do this at any time and blah blah blah what i'm saying
25:56is all i'm saying is that siesta time is still your time rupert really struggling with uh having
26:03the leader everybody else completely on board we elected project managers not to dictate rules like
26:08what's happening uh siesta time all that kind of thing i'm not i'm not dictating the rules no i know
26:13i know just we're covering stuff that's not have something we'll get to there don't worry okay
26:17by the way rupert these aren't my ideas i know i know i'm just i thought that was the election
26:21yeah but let me let me finish that's all these aren't my ideas this is what everyone has put to
26:26me yeah let me finish yeah let's just sound like let me finish that's fine i asked everybody what they
26:32wanted done i'm just doing what exactly what i said in my manifesto trying to facilitate the will of the
26:38group and everybody asks me about siestas so i'm just saying do whatever you like with it that's all i'm saying
26:44yeah you're saying right so we done now boys we're done good job saki well done mate
26:56he's a douche i don't understand what he was trying to achieve there he kind of cut me off and was like
27:03uh i thought the project manager was supposed to do this this and this and i'm like hang on hang on i
27:07haven't got there yet the meeting's not over yet you dickhead as well as coordinating each day's
27:12workload saki is organizing an upcoming beach party to increase unity in the group as far as
27:19i was concerned we elected a sort of party planner and as far as kind of was going a bit beyond all
27:23that those decisions that were more group things but i can't be bothered to fucking argue anymore
27:33we very clearly elected somebody as a project manager for the party which is basically organizing
27:38a party party planning and getting a bit of food to go we had a very clear discussion on that we
27:42weren't voting for a leader that would still remain within the group so if we start giving saki that
27:46position of doing that that's then we're saying he's leader and that's what we didn't do so i'm very
27:50clear on it and i'm very adamant i think you're the only person that believes that he should really
27:54literally stick to that one focus of party planning and not start to actually coordinate with other
27:59things i have an issue on the it's a very simple point that there is a leader before we had
28:05uh saki in place you did feel that um morning meetings are important in fact you were adamant
28:11that we had no no i agree and in fact you tended to lead them you know you said you you enjoyed
28:15that role you took that role on we had a chat right at the beginning and so you were effectively
28:20a self-appointed leader it's just now that we have a democratically elected leader you're very
28:25resistant to it brian yeah joe dino saki has cooled some of the men together as a chance sighting by
28:39ryan could lead them to a food source rich in energy me and joe went on a fig run on the way we saw some
28:48bees the men are heading to the spot where ryan saw some bees close to where they first set up camp
29:00almost a month ago in the hope of discovering honey
29:09prospect of honey gives me a bono
29:11oh dino ryan told us he found bees nobody else believed him we walked through the jungle in order
29:20to regain some respect from some of the members of this group who just clearly disregard him at every
29:25opportunity four people are gone looking for honey i know it's like i bang on the drum sound of war
29:33drums against complacency and fallen girlfriend strolled up for honey and now we've got no food does
29:37anyone know what they're looking for here i thought i heard buzzing i can hear about it i can hear like
29:44a deep drone actually yeah hey guys come here look at this it's got bees on it galore
29:52very good spot around holy fuckaroni this is it guys we have found a beehive ryan you are legend mate
30:03there's no guarantee the men will find honey in the hive but having been starved of sugar for
30:09almost a month they are willing to take the risk and now it's honey time for three hours to get it and
30:17come back and hopefully get ourselves some honey and maybe finally ryan and rupert can put their demons to
30:24beds we can take him seriously
30:32the men have returned to camp grabbing whatever tools they can find to get to the beehive within the
30:37tree trunk
30:40i've got the hot embers of our fire which is going to smoke out the bees
30:46i've got everyone's clothes several species of bees inhabit this island
30:51and if the men encounter the africanized bee its sting can kill
30:56all right straight away clear the area machetes out clear away all the dry leaves and shit
31:01i've never been so focused about anything on this trip is this what about if they just come swarming
31:06out hundreds of them yeah if they do that'll be a fight to see mate and also run my bum i was going like this
31:13what have you got on there mate this is my multi-purpose box of shorts
31:21using this to stop the bees attacking my face the smoke from a small fire should make the bees drowsy
31:27and less likely to attack there we go by opening up the small hole in the trunk the smoke should repel
31:34the bees and let the men explore the hive this is it lads okay here we go this one come out
31:50okay here we go
31:56oh
32:04should uh just shovel the shed in there yeah go on go on
32:14the fuck is that
32:15that's
32:21oh my god
32:25oh my god
32:27that is the sweetest
32:29that's honeycomb
32:31oh my god
32:33mate that is the best honey i've ever tasted in my life
32:35mate
32:37i think it's a society our palates have become so conditioned just a sugar salt and fat and for
33:04these guys stripped of that it's almost like instant detox look at us now sweating like
33:09bitters but we've got energy to get that honey you won't be able to know what it's like unless
33:14you've been 23 days with barely any food you won't be able to experience but when you taste
33:19something sweet it's almost like you can feel the sugar going from your tongue into your stomach and
33:23just straight into your brain almost like doing a line of whiz or something and it tastes unbelievable
33:30oh wow that's the toughy stuff that's the toughy stuff that's the toughy stuff how are you feeling
33:36i think we should walk back and then ryan should drop a bombshell you've got fucking honey
33:49right how are you gonna put this out
33:50you get my penis there no hi guys what you got ryan what have we got i got us a sexy ass little
34:04treat for tonight some honey nice we took it down yeah that is fucking nice it's the nicest honey in the
34:15world that is awesome who found that right no way did you get it out did you light a fire we ain't
34:24members in the table brilliant nice one yeah genius clever boys amazing what a fantastic end to an
34:32incredible day what's gonna be a good meal tonight is yeah free courses if we please i hope that this
34:40this pushes towards a bit of a resolution i mean i've got my um my reservations about rupert but i
34:47would rather we all were just getting along and i hope that maybe he has a little bit more respect for
34:53brian really for getting out there and doing that don't worry legend all right well done mate
35:00well done very well done mate thanks fetch we got a load of oysters limpets and yeah some more coconuts
35:19um brian yeah well there's been lots of different brian's on this trip hasn't there
35:23because he's actually grafting really hard last few days which he wasn't at the beginning
35:27um i think he's starting to realize what hard work means i mean we're never going to be
35:32wasn't buddies or anything like that but it's hard not to like him
35:37for dinner the men have come together to feast on oysters with honey
35:43i mean i think the whole sacky thing and i have the amount of respect for the job he's done
35:50oh my god um yeah i mean what's my problem with leadership um
35:57i've always had a problem with people telling me what to do i guess is one of them um i don't
36:02like it i'm not very good at it oh wow i rebelled a lot my teenage years i couldn't deal with authority
36:11and even to this day i'm still not very good when people tell me what to do but i don't know whether
36:15that's a bad quality i don't feel it always is i think sometimes it's good but it's not always an
36:19admirable one so maybe that's something i need to learn from this experience
36:23after dinner ryan reflects on his reaction over the stingray killing
36:31i regret having a vicious tongue in my life
36:36people say to me today they're not going to get me anywhere but i'm a tosser basically
36:43you are a dick when you're going to go
36:44off we all have our moments i'm sure we certainly do mate we certainly do
36:51i mean that's one thing you can be rest assured of ryan everyone else here can be a complete
36:55dickhead as well at times though especially me so you're not alone oh well i think it'd be
37:01nice if we can all get through the last days the smiles on our faces and enjoy it
37:06i'm gonna really really miss this place excuse me excuse me thank god that started working again
37:19hey morning there's a real newfound energy amongst everyone here at the camp
37:38great sense of optimism a great sense of purpose
37:41everyone seems to be pulling in the right direction i am amazed i haven't seen so much energy
37:51around this camp for about a week i couldn't have asked for a better morning
37:56saki's done a fantastic job and uh everyone is behind him so we're just going around to see um cb
38:03he's building the raft so we can get some crap pots out
38:05we were dropped here with three knives three machetes that was it and we've sourced food we've sourced
38:19water we've sourced our own home we've made beds tables and we are bloody amazing
38:26our team has through adversity come out the other side united together and gone you asked us to
38:43survive and thrive we've done more than that we have absolutely nailed this
38:47it's a men's last night on the island after an entire month away from civilization tomorrow they'll
38:59be going home all right boys fire's ready food needs cooking let the party begin
39:10so this is it this was like the pirate dream it's just amazing fantastic i wouldn't want to be
39:17anywhere else than i am now really wouldn't in the world cheers guys cheers guys thank you for the
39:23best time of my life anyway lads thank you you can get out more fun how far we've come from half an
39:31oyster and six nails ej just in the ways of the ancient peoples we thought it would be very nice tonight
39:40uh to offer something back to the ocean with a huge display of gratitude and thanks
39:46all right guys we're going to launch our raft of gratitude to the ocean
39:51there we go fantastic job
40:04just weird the dust settling on the whole experience and coming to the end and
40:08really excited about leaving but gonna really really miss this place
40:15last day on shorely island and i've been hit with an extreme sense of depression
40:21and it's mad because i'll be if i can't wait to speak to my girlfriend
40:25but it's hit me that we are leaving and it's making me sad
40:31i've got to turn my emails back on tomorrow and i don't want to do that
40:37and there's a big alarm bell going like that big flashy light
40:41then why don't you want to do that what is wrong what is wrong with life back home that makes you
40:46fear that side of it so much and that kind of what this island kept to understand but on the same time
41:05it helps you appreciate what you've got
41:17the best thing i'm looking forward to is um
41:22is seeing me mom and dad
41:29that's it
41:38i mean i've really missed them
41:47i'm sure we'll all agree this has been an amazing journey
41:51um 28 days and not one of us left
41:55we all came here at the same time we all went through the same things we argued we fell in love
42:01we fought we made up and on that note i have a little poem that i was using pretty much as a prayer
42:09for all the times i got really hard when it was really hard to pull through and it goes a little
42:14something like this
42:17out of the night that covers me black as the pit from pole to pole
42:22i think whatever gods may be for my unconquerable soul in the fell clutch of circumstance i have not
42:30cried nor winced aloud under the bludgeonings of chance my head is bloody but unbowed
42:36beyond this place of wrath and tears looms but the horror of the shade
42:42yet the menace of the years finds and shall finds me us
42:47unafraid it matters not how straight the gate how charged with punishments the scroll i am the
42:55master of my fate i am the captain of my soul
43:02i've said them over and over again a few days before they started on the island just remember
43:06the pain won't last forever but the end goal has now arrived and um we're going to take them out
43:13so i can see their fire there he is boys
43:28i'm getting excited man this is it we've done it all we've worked for has come down to this moment
43:43wow look at you guys hairier skinnier yep but hopefully smarter wow congratulations thank you
43:55before the men leave there's just one thing left for them to do after three let's say goodbye to camp
44:02basi one two three
44:08watch the steam watch the steam
44:15i think we live in such a fast and materialistic culture and i think what these guys have proved
44:20actually when you're stripped of all of that they're made of something decent and they've only
44:25proved that one way and that's through hardship it's going to be a wonderful thing now to leave with
44:30them and then reintroduce them to life and let's hope they they focus on the good side of things and
44:34leave behind the bad stuff some people may think well done to only other may think silly old bugger
44:47see you later surely oh surely they're all different 20s 30s 40s and 50s but there's still life at 70.
44:56the greatest thing about this experience i think was this amazing opportunity to really think in
45:03depth about who you are your life so i'm kind of looking at a new future and so it's been great
45:08having that time to really think about where i'm going what i'm going to do
45:13i've always seen myself as lazy here you can't really be lazy
45:18mine now is focused and sharp i've got a sense of ambition that i've never felt before which is going to
45:23change my life a happier one for me i really think that i have undergone quite a big change in my head
45:33i think having had everything just taken away and stripped to the absolute bare bones of nothing
45:39i feel like i'm going to appreciate just just everything so much more i really do
45:45i've still got a bucket list at my age and and i realized really that i've got to bloody get on with
45:54it and not spend the next 10 years just keeping up with emails
46:00i came on a boy almost didn't know where i wanted to go in life just plotting along just thinking yeah i got a job
46:09whatever and now it feels if i'm leaving like a man it doesn't matter what sort of person you are
46:17what sort of man you are you can do anything and achieve anything you want to
46:21fucking hell we did it we came we saw we conquered we did it
46:42wonder if you have what it takes to survive on the island go to channel4.com slash the island for
46:54information about the next series
47:00so it was the best of times it was the worst of times bear grills returns to see what the men
47:05really thought of the experience and was it all worth it surviving the island next on four
