00:00there's no doubt that 21st century man has come a long way from our hunter-gatherer origins
00:12come on it's Ryan here calling today to book the annual service on the boiler in Britain today we
00:19take food shelter and warmth for granted come a cappuccino please and most of us consume rather
00:26than create I want to find out what happens if you strip man of all the luxuries and the conveniences
00:33of modern living and then force them to fight for their very existence 13 ordinary British men
00:44are about to be abandoned on the remote uninhabited Pacific Island with just a close to stand up in
00:51and a few basic tools keep eyes on it keep eyes on it it's a boa constrictor oh hello scorpion
01:01these guys are gonna be completely alone just seems like it's jungle forever filming everything
01:09themselves I'll pass the camera up to you as they struggle for fire is this extreme water salt no
01:19food yeah these dead I have no idea where the next meal is coming from and shelter have British men
01:27lost the practical skills that were once passed down from father to son when pushed to the extreme do
01:34they still have what it takes to survive we're all losing white paper on the edge be like collapse
01:40month tonight we feast like kings 30 people will not leave this island one wrong move and this place
01:54will take me down if I guarantee you anything it will be life-changing for these people
02:00it's hard to say if I'm a survivor or not because I've never had to survive
02:27it's a bit of the unknown ain't it I certainly don't underestimate what we're facing
02:35I've never done anything like this in my father I'm about to abandon these men on a
02:42remote Pacific Island to see if they can survive for a month they will be utterly alone my mother does
02:49pretty much everything for me so I think going to the island is gonna give me the opportunity to
02:56prove to myself that I can actually live I can survive these are ordinary guys with no previous
03:02experience of living in the wild I think I have a massive point to prove people might watch this
03:11and be like oh he's not going to survive he's gay so what what I'm the dark horse I'm gonna survive
03:17anything you follow me here we go boys for the next four weeks these men will have to survive entirely on
03:24their own wits they have no food and only enough drinking water for the first day really the idea
03:35behind this experiment is to find out whether modern man has lost that ability to look after themselves
03:40when they're stripped of everyday creature comfort without your smartphone without your computer can
03:46modern man still cut it I still believe that that spirit is still there within us all and it's not
03:53until kind of squeezed and put under pressure that we find that spirit that resource on this that
03:58courage again so okay who was expecting a white sandy beach take it out guys what is it it's a croc
04:11that that's not the way where there is right there I'm not I'd see whether it was over there to the left
04:21okay guys this is end of the road from here on in you're totally on your own I'm not going to sugarcoat
04:38this it's going to be a really hard experience let's see what British modern man is really made
04:45of cheers I suggest we get in a single file because where we're gonna go from here do we know the way
04:58exactly so it's pointless all wandering off in different directions the group has never met
05:05before what's your what's your name there will be completely alone and have had just a day of
05:14survival training straight ahead looks as if there's some land down through there from here on in everything
05:21you see will be filmed by the men themselves get in single file because if you wonder off you could
05:28drop down a goalie if you do single file what's your name my name is Tony all right if you get in
05:34single file fellas if one of you wanders off whenever you're going to go out I'll tell you single file
05:39okay oh god wow weird feeling suddenly just leaving them mainly because I know how harsh these sort of
05:56terrains can be these islands always look amazing if you get up close and dirty and you realize you know
06:04what stinky mangrove swamp bloody hot and full of one hell of a lot of nasties it's time for me and the
06:14crew to leave I won't be back until the end of the experiment the men's home for the next month is a
06:27remote uninhabited Pacific Island that's eight kilometers in circumference I've assured there's
06:34enough food and water here to keep them alive but only if they have the ingenuity to find it catch it
06:40and kill it the island has five beaches but the interior is unforgiving it's completely covered in
06:48thick jungle and mangrove swamp which is exactly where I've dropped them off do I say your hands do it
06:57nice one what's your name Joe yeah Matt Matt nice to meet you Matt good to see three of the men are
07:05trained as cameraman but they will be living under exactly the same conditions as everyone else in their
07:12bags are just camera kit and medical supplies stick it in the medical pack beyond that the men have no
07:19food one day's water supply and only a handful of tools you've got three machetes we've got two
07:26knives one smaller knife so we've got three knives three knives three machetes yeah that's it yeah man
07:33fucking hell fuck me it's been an unexpected start I've been fantasizing for a quite a long time now
07:43about a beautiful golden white sandy beach and the boat crunching softly up on the sand what's actually
07:49happened is that we've landed in the middle of an alien movie just have a look at the water look
07:57soup I mean it's coming up this is coming in so quick in this part of the Pacific extreme tides mean
08:04these mangroves will soon be under three meters of water yeah mate this tide is coming in quick
08:10right we've got to get I think we probably need to get away from here so it's not it's not the ideal
08:14place tide comes in where yeah it's gonna stop up there if we if we head head up that way whoa hang
08:19on a minute whoa whoa hang on let's discuss it let's discuss it all we want to do is just just get out of
08:24here that's what we're trying to do all right you want to go up and then I'll yeah so we can get
08:30ourselves up right here watch your ankles it's slippy come on listen in fellas yeah oh listen in you'll
08:38soon go over and you'll finish it with a bloody sprained ankle within an hour it's four hours till
08:43sundown the men now have two pressing priorities go on I've got you get a foot on to look for a safe
08:53place to spend the night and then find a source of drinkable water before their supply runs out you
08:59all right yeah yeah I'll pass the camera up to you are you coming up really yeah I just don't want to
09:04sniff you got it yeah I got it what you do for a living D I'm a hairdresser I'm a hairdresser and
09:15look what I'm doing now am I allowed to say that first 30 minutes was just fucking awful
09:22where are you from originally well I'm from London I was born there but I grew up in Ghana and Zimbabwe
09:30what about you Ryan where are you from I'm from Stockport near Manchester lived there all my life
09:35out of reach of the incoming tide the men can catch their breath for the first time
09:41what do you do I trim people out to use computers I'm an IT guy oh wow I would never have got that
09:48I would never have guessed that hey Sam no I'm a neurologist you're a neurologist what's that
09:52brain it's like brains yeah yeah well how about you Teddy what do you do I was a police officer for
09:5934 years now I still do security work wow so what Sam what does Ryan do yeah what do you do mate
10:07um I work in a call center at the moment customer service nothing glamorous nothing special and could
10:16you please just confirm to me the first line of the address and postcode I'm not where I'd like to be
10:22at this point in time and I feel like the chances to achieve things are running low I'd like to think
10:30that I could achieve something that's a bit tough the only other thing that I've done that is remotely
10:35like this is going going camping with my friends but that's just been one night on the park getting
10:42drunk having a party other than that nothing whoa that was close one almost had my kneecap then
10:52day one ah here we go yes this could be not a bad place if we had to the camp you know that I
11:01mean this is not a bad place to start thing is there could be scorpions all around this area
11:07business coach Chris is convinced that in the remaining three hours of daylight the group should
11:16find a beach to camp on away from the jungle critters it looks as if the island is almost like a u-shape and we
11:25came into the lagoon for me the best plan at the moment is to get back in the water yeah and walk
11:30along the mangrove so long we stay in the middle I strongly object to that my probably reasons are this
11:36we don't know what how deep that water is we don't know what the floor of the water is like we've
11:42no idea how far we're going to be wandering through three foot of water wait one at a time we've got
11:49it you know if we had to add a push we couldn't easily make camp here it'd be an all right place
11:54to stay if we had to it's better than the mangrove swamp there won't be any crocodiles up here yeah
11:59we're away from mosquitoes a little bit whoa guys oh shit look it's a boa constrictor
12:07they're fucking quick and good they're pretty vicious just shows we're not alone yeah great how
12:21exciting how'd you think that I just can't see myself being able to sleep here I just stay awake
12:27all night for all we know is I feel right there from what you've seen of the island so far how many
12:32fields have you seen I think I don't want to sleep here either but yeah don't think you can cope
12:41really yeah no way I'm not sleeping tonight I already know that from here on in you're totally on your
13:00road 13 British men have been abandoned on a remote Pacific Island with nothing but the clothes on their
13:06back and a few basic tools they now have less than a day's supply of water left oh god the men are
13:15utterly alone filming everything themselves hey good to meet you I want to find out what happens when you
13:24take away all the comforts of 21st century life whoa I think there's something primal and deep within
13:32us all that actually wants to know can we still cut it sometimes it takes a little bit of squeezing a
13:39little bit of pushing to find it in people guys come on yeah welcome to the jungle the men have chosen a
13:51clearing in the jungle to sleep in but with the remaining daylight they must find a source of
13:56drinking water as a supply will be gone by tomorrow one options keep thrashing up through this way the only
14:04the what we've got to consider there is that we could flash for an hour it's the top of the hill
14:08or something and it's bugger all there we haven't funny water inside anything so one plan would be
14:12some scouts go that way so the base stays here just be careful that the plants here are alive and they
14:17will get you while one group headed by retired policeman Tony stay behind to prepare the camp for the night
14:25don't forget this is your bed tonight the cleaner the better see you later cool center worker Ryan and
14:35the others head off to scout for water right left all right right on there this way that way this way
14:42let's go then the island is one square kilometer of mangrove swamps and thick jungle the men have no
14:51idea where to head to find water and currently is 30 degrees with almost 70% humidity I want to drink
15:01in this sort of heat when you're working really hard you can use up about a liter water an hour
15:08that's how unforgiving it is you take your off the ball for a second dehydration will get you and the
15:13number one priority for them is finding water without it the last probably about three days
15:19water we found Jackie stagnant water there's more over there yeah we found water boys
15:37salt no that is salt water fucking down cock bit scared that the island is just like this all the way
15:46really really yeah that's what it feels like at the moment to me I hope not I'm hoping there's some
15:51sort of open space where we can look at the stack the sky yeah well here we go again looking at hungry
16:02first stick it to be honest guys this almost looks like this looks like animal tracks isn't it this is a definite trail isn't it good trail
16:16mate it's the beach it's the beach guys I can hear it right there and you can see the water the sun glinting off it
16:26it's just beyond this prickly mass yeah palm trees oh yeah oh thank god
16:34yes yeah baby
16:37shazam oh my god look at this
16:42pelicans
16:54wow beautiful
16:58it's so beautiful compared to that mangrove swamp but it's just perfect isn't it this is
17:08ridiculously wonderful we can sleep tonight yeah no full well that we're going to come down here
17:13tomorrow for a dawn swim and it's all going to be beautiful although I'm well tempted to just have a
17:18quick well should we jump in I am tempted do you want should we jump let's have a go come on
17:22and one afternoon hell becomes paradise
17:41suddenly from a dank sweaty forest full of snakes and spiders and scorpions it's amazing
17:52how happy simple things like just finding this is life may not be so bad here
17:57sam's been stung on the face by a jellyfish they'll take the pain away go there piss in
18:05your hand rub it on your face and then wash your face can you see anything there are no
18:10things you can't pull them off anyway i mean try not to touch it you can piss in your hands rub it
18:15on your face and it'll stop the pain it's like right on my top lip and across my nose 33 year
18:23old bachelor sam nightingale works in london as a neurologist you know i'm the kind of person that
18:29sets myself a lot of challenges you know um i'm not kind of satisfied with where i'm at i you know
18:35once i've achieved something i kind of want to set the next goal you know maybe that's something
18:40that makes me turn me a bit restless but it's also something that makes me achieve lots of things
18:44and it's kind of got me to where i am in life actually that really actually really stings
18:48just do that i'm not i'm not pissing on my face let's do it you sure you don't want to piss on
18:53your own face on your face if you want will you uh kiff's preparing some now
18:57right you think we should start heading back to camp now before it gets dark
19:10thank you it's a shame we haven't got enough time tonight to move down here but i think it'd be silly
19:14the men have less than seven hours of drinking water left they urgently need to find a fresh source
19:22at the jungle camp dean and tony have cleared a spot to sleep for the night
19:29i was quite worried about doing this because i've only been out for a year
19:34so being from you say you came out a year ago yeah oh that was going to be one of the questions
19:41yeah yeah i came out a year ago because i'm from a romany gypsy background
19:44yeah it's like it's harder for me to come out because everyone there is married by the time
19:48they're 17. how are you accepted by them now absolutely fine like my dad like my dad i was
19:53most scared about telling my dad so it's like it is so nice it's so nice to just be able to be
19:58myself and like know who i am that's awesome mate i'm so just for you
20:03sam rupert and fletch continue to look for a drinking supply
20:10well what do you have mate amps i'm fucking out
20:13jeez bastards
20:15oh what we got here guys
20:22is that water
20:24no yes it's not the best color it isn't but it'll boil up we can filter it mate that's um
20:33should we just make sure we see if it's fresh yeah yeah yeah yeah
20:36how deep is that it's about a foot deep yeah all right that's a lot of water that's oh yeah
20:42that keep us going for a week yeah that's fucking that's a great find so rather than
20:46drinking it i might just have a little bath in it wash my balls off
20:49it's our only water supply at the moment yeah we should probably look after a little more
20:53yeah we should have a balls out balls out the drinking water
20:56if they want to drink this water they'll need to boil it first
21:03and that means they'll need to light a fire
21:06one of the problems of drinking stagnant water is that the animals also drink from it
21:12they do more than that though they also shit in it and where you get faeces you're also
21:16going to get waterborne parasites all manner of different infections so without fire really
21:21for them it's like a ticking clock exposing them to dehydration
21:25ah my boys are home you find anything yeah we did mate yeah fine some fresh water you
21:34found fresh water yeah yeah boys their supply of drinking water is dwindling fast they need
21:42to get a fire lit and quickly is that for the bojo fire joe yeah just a bit of string that we just
21:48found just as we came in near the swamp it's just about long you know 23 year old sheep farmer joe plans
21:56to create fire using a technique that dates back to the fourth century BC they'll spin two pieces of
22:02wood against each other using a bow but like all the men he's only had a day's survival training to
22:10you first we'll do it ever so slow ready oh yeah shitter fucking thing see what i'm starting to get my first hunger
22:20pains you're joking i'm just very very vaguely just little knocking in the distance little hunger pang
22:26he's only going to get bigger that is come on spin
22:32fucking thing
22:36everyone else wet yeah yeah wet through yeah i need to uh explain something to everybody go on
22:46half webbed feet hoofed feet worse worse i'm just trying to think of a way to explain it explain myself
22:54i've got i've got a tattoo that um it looks really bad it was a mistake getting it it doesn't mean what
23:04it looks like everybody knows what it looks like you don't even have to say it out loud it means peace
23:09love and uni uh i was just interested in that sort of subject but basically basically swastika yeah
23:16oh fuck it but i'm so embarrassed of it now i'm great come on don't worry about it you want to see it
23:22there it is
23:25that's what it is we're stupid but you know i was young
23:29it's just one of them things
23:32has anybody found any nuts anyway
23:35oh shit it is this fucking stream
23:43i don't even smoke yet
23:46looks like it might be a dark night tonight
23:49at night under the forest canopy
23:55it's now completely dark
23:57and the only way to film
23:59is using infrared lights
24:01now shit drill
24:07after three hours of failure
24:11the push to get the fire lit
24:13has now become an urgent group effort
24:15okay let's start speeding her up a little bit
24:17there we go
24:18that's good
24:19there we go
24:20aye shit house
24:21for me the big concern is everyone's hydration
24:26potential for people to get really sick
24:28if they're not drinking enough and we're so overexcited about being here
24:31and you know you could so quickly get dangerously dehydrated
24:35i think the main priority now now that we've found water
24:37um is getting the fire going
24:40and getting a system of getting water boiled and filtered and drinkable
24:43uh because that's absolutely critical
24:45okay let's stop there flet stop there stop there
24:49i am in the pitch black
24:53i am genuinely so scared
24:55oh grandpa he's gonna sleep
24:58oh is he he's snoring
24:59is he
25:00how do you manage that in this weather
25:03i don't know
25:03there's just the last chance
25:09if we don't get fire we go to bed
25:10we have failed
25:23at making a fire
25:24i really thought
25:27i just thought i thought we'd be able to do it
25:30and uh
25:32i don't know i feel
25:35i feel pissed off
25:37i feel really pissed off
25:38hopefully nothing's gonna crawl on me in the night but
25:42i'm gonna try and not think about it
25:45try and get some shot eye
25:46absolutely shattered to be honest here
25:51the men only have a few hours of water left
25:56if they can't light a fire in the morning
25:58their time on the island will be over
26:01what is that on my leg
26:02i am cacking myself
26:05oh fucking hell
26:07it was i've never slept on the floor that before
26:17it weren't nice
26:18it really weren't nice
26:19dawn
26:21the men's first morning on the island
26:23no that wasn't good
26:26i got an hour towards the end
26:28but yeah just couldn't sleep
26:31it was just so uncomfortable
26:32so that isn't a very good pillow
26:35wasn't quite
26:38tried to turn on his head for a while
26:41but it didn't really do it either
26:43i had a man's sandwich
26:46it was really nice
26:47i was the frankfurt and i had two rolls
26:49yesterday they found a stagnant pool of water
26:53but without fire
26:54they can't purify it
26:56this is all we've got left for our drinkable water
26:59for today
27:00the risk of dehydration is now critical
27:04let's have a bit of a meeting
27:06but i mean i think everyone agrees our priority is getting a fire
27:09because that leads to everything else
27:10water, food, you name it
27:11i think we just really just sort of break it down to real real basics here
27:16i think we've got to get stockpiled water
27:18we've got to filter it and get fire
27:20if we can get that happening today
27:22because if we don't sort those three things out
27:24filtering water and fire then
27:26we're looking and we're being troubled
27:29and today's going to go quick
27:30turn off the uh
27:32turn off the infrared
27:33there we go
27:34the men head to the beach
27:38to search for dry wood to make fire
27:40on the way
27:46joe hunts everywhere
27:48for the perfect fire making timber
27:50it's just wet
27:52it's too wet
27:53it's too wet
27:54it's too wet dan
27:54yeah
27:55fuck
27:56at home in the peak district
28:02joe works on his family's farm
28:04i know it sounds a bit extreme
28:07but i think i would
28:08i'd bring back national service
28:10because i think that young people should learn
28:13what our grandfathers used to do
28:15and people learn a lot more about respect
28:17and things like that
28:17there's a lot of respect missing
28:18with some youth people of today
28:22if we get fire that's it
28:26we can move on
28:26we can food
28:27purify water
28:28so it all comes back
28:30to fire
28:31so yeah
28:33there's a bit of pressure on today
28:34this is going to be the first time
28:40some of the guys have seen the sky
28:41since you got here
28:42oh man this is this is a drink
28:45oh look at this
29:03it's just like loads of containers
29:05this is just a council tip basically
29:08the amount of rubbish that is washed up on this beach
29:15is horrendous really
29:17but i suppose for us it's a blessing
29:19mate that's a find
29:21that's perfect
29:22now we need to find a hammock
29:24yep
29:25one thing that staggers me with these desert islands
29:30however remote they are
29:31is just the amount of trash you get washed up on the beaches
29:35but for these guys they really need to embrace the fact
29:39that one man's trash is another man's treasure
29:41the men are on the island with only the bare minimum
29:44this debris discarded by ships
29:47and washed up on the beach
29:48could be a lifeline for their survival
29:50can i just take the opportunity
29:54to introduce you to the 14th member
29:57of us
29:58he's our survivor
30:00give a big round of applause for percy the pig
30:03after a night in the sweaty jungle
30:08the beach is an ideal place to cool off
30:11yeah look at that
30:22that's the money shot
30:23the money shot's right now
30:24the men may be enjoying the sea water
30:37but the supply of drinking water
30:39has now finished
30:41so i've just been for wee
30:43first one in a long time
30:45and i've saved a little bit to share with you
30:49a few lucky things
30:50so
30:52not a healthy looking colour
30:56i'm sure you'll agree
30:57i think we've got an injury here
31:05it trainer mike fletcher
31:08is in trouble
31:09come up to the camp
31:12okay
31:14have you been poisoned or not
31:16yeah i don't know either mate
31:18this area of the pacific
31:19is notorious for deadly stonefish
31:22with skin piercing spines
31:24it's the most poisonous fish
31:26in the world
31:26it's more than just a rock
31:28shouldn't have hurt that much
31:33should it
31:34okay
31:35ah
31:36fucks
31:38it really hurts me
31:43it's more than it should
31:45sit down
31:46sit down
31:47do you know whether
31:48fletcher's stood on
31:50like a fish
31:52i really
31:53or whether
31:55it's a graze on a rock
31:56leakage engineer craig
32:01is also a part-time
32:03st john's ambulanceman
32:04can't see anything inside there
32:06just fresh blood coming out of it
32:08so i don't
32:09i don't think you've
32:10i think it's just a rock
32:12with a puncher wound
32:13you normally just get one point
32:15but this is quite spread across
32:17i think you might
32:18live to tell the tale anyway
32:20i'm guessing i'm not going to die
32:21that's my prognosis
32:22it's very tricky
32:27it lulls you into a
32:28false sense of security
32:29in this beach
32:30i think when you're in the jungle
32:32and um
32:33all the mangroves
32:34you're sort of
32:35you know you know you've got to crack on
32:38but you hit the beach
32:38and of course we're so used to hitting
32:40hitting beaches
32:40and just relaxing
32:42but actually if we don't get fire today
32:44people will start to ask the question
32:46can we ever get it going
32:47you know
32:47joe and dan have found some driftwood
32:51and the desperate quest for fire continues
32:54right let's just start and that's it
32:57start it like that
32:58oh yeah this rock's good
33:00is it
33:01yeah
33:02what compared to last night
33:03yeah
33:03oh
33:04keep going keep going
33:05getting tender
33:08put some in there
33:09through friction
33:14they need to heat the tip of the wood
33:16to create a smouldering ember
33:18hold it
33:21really slowly
33:22no there's no ember
33:27no
33:28motherfucker
33:29fuck
33:31it's very hot
33:41it's very hot
33:42isn't it
33:42so it's out of the sunshine now
33:44would you say stifling Tony
33:45sorry
33:46would you say it's stifling
33:47I've never known
33:48it like it
33:50the thing is this
33:54yes I've been as hot as this
33:55but this is
33:56constantly hot
33:58yeah
33:58it doesn't let up
33:59it doesn't let up
34:00here we go
34:05the drier harder wood
34:07should give them a better chance
34:09of starting the fire
34:10start nicer
34:12that's it
34:13let's just get it going up and down
34:14that's it like that
34:15in the midday sun
34:16the temperature is now hitting 35 degrees
34:20that's it
34:21stick it heavy
34:26have you
34:27oh I'm hot
34:29what's that
34:30I said god I'm hot
34:32energy levels are flagging
34:33are they
34:34I'm very hot
34:36are you finding your
34:38concentration a little bit
34:41weightless
34:42mind wanders a little bit
34:44I think my concentration
34:47will be a bit
34:47more focused
34:49when I'm happy
34:51that there's an unlimited supply of water
34:53yeah
34:54this temperature
34:58we need water quickly
34:59we've found the fresh water
35:01it's a stagnant pool
35:02we need to boil it
35:03it's a little bit desperate now
35:05they've been trying to get an ember
35:15for eight hours
35:16nice and long
35:18oh no no
35:22just put it away
35:24wait wait wait wait wait we've got one

35:32just stay there Joe
35:33stay there
35:33we've got time

35:42let's get some of this together
35:43okay guys
35:45just drop her in
35:49drop her in a slightly
35:50slowly slowly
35:51really gentle
35:52just get something
35:53just get the knife
35:54and just slowly
35:54drop her on
35:55there we go
35:56yep she's on
35:58she's on
35:58she's on
35:58she's on
36:26I need to sit down man
36:28I'm struggling a bit right now
36:30yeah
36:30I am not gonna lie
36:31I am
36:32I'm too hot and I want a drink
36:34yeah
36:35the lack of water
36:36is having an unusual effect on Rupert
36:39I think you're definitely dehydrated
36:41I'm fucking seriously
36:43my piss was a colour of um
36:44Guinness
36:45yeah
36:46which is not good
36:47and I've just pissed out so much liquid
36:49just walking up there
36:50so it's getting serious a little bit
36:53so we need to
36:53it is
36:54we need to sort of up the ante a little bit
36:56this is 24 hours in
37:01right now
37:03getting this fire going
37:05it's just crucial
37:08and if it doesn't happen today
37:10then I think we're really gonna start getting into trouble
37:13I am concerned now
37:16I am concerned
37:17I really think we need to pull our finger out
37:21finding the heat unbearable at the moment
37:37it's the first proper midday we've been in on the island
37:40we've experienced the heat without the water
37:44without any water
37:45halfway through the men's second day on the island
37:48and it's over 30 degrees in the shade
37:52come on lads
38:00that's it
38:02that's it
38:03that's it
38:04thanks
38:04for the past 12 hours
38:09Joe, Dan and Fletch
38:10have been struggling to light a fire
38:12this is it boys
38:13I can feel it
38:14big long strikes
38:15to you
38:15big long strikes
38:17the drinking supply they arrived with
38:18has now gone
38:20they urgently need to boil the stagnant water
38:23they've found
38:23to make it safe to drink
38:25fuck
38:28dehydration is taking its toll
38:33on 70-year-old Tony
38:34my mouth is very dry now
38:38my mum, Agnes, 91 years of age
38:43I'm 6,000 miles away from you, mum
38:46good well, mate
38:53I'm missing you
38:55yeah
38:55fuck
39:03husk's just not taking
39:06it all went there
39:08that should have gone
39:09Joe and Dan are trying to produce a smouldering ember
39:12using friction
39:13but everything has to be just right
39:16we realise now that the drill has to be the same width
39:19all the way down
39:19the stone's got to have the hole in exactly the right place
39:23the hearth's got to be dead flat
39:24and very, very close to the little V
39:26so it's like each one of those things
39:28has stitched us up
39:29a lot of ducks to be on a line
39:30yeah, along the way
39:31this is it
39:32okay, long
39:34big old long
39:35if they fail to get a fire lit today
39:38they will have no choice
39:39they will have to leave the island
39:41this kind of has to work
39:43because this is, there's no water
39:46okay, stop there
39:52fingers crossed
39:57fingers crossed
39:58fingers crossed
39:59fingers crossed
40:00okay, go on then
40:01drop a run
40:02gently like a butterfly

40:48thank you, Fletch
40:49that needed to happen today
40:50and I've been getting headaches this afternoon
40:52just from dehydration
40:54the team needed water
40:56well done, man
40:58well done, lads
40:59well done, boys
41:00well done, boys
41:01the pool of life
41:04the pool of life
41:06I certainly had kind of visions before we came of at least some kind of running water
41:12and some little pool where we could wash clothes and ourselves in fresh water
41:17as long as, like, no animal comes and dies in it
41:22should stay reasonably safe
41:24not quite heavy, Anne
41:28there we am
41:32this is the first go at boiling the dirty water
41:35the fact that it forms a head isn't very reassuring
41:39no
41:40Rupert and Sam are using the tins found washed up on the beach to boil and sterilise the water
41:46that's it
41:47done
41:48that's kind of got to be at least a litre and a half in there, maybe two
41:52yeah, it's only like 39 tins we have to boil in one day
41:56seriously
41:5739 tins a day
41:59there's a lot of tins every day
42:04ah, she's up
42:05rolling boil
42:06look at that
42:07we've got a rolling boil
42:08yeah, there's a lovely pot of hot water with scum all over the top of it
42:12and we can drink it
42:13it's brilliant
42:17smells like, like
42:18a fire
42:19a metal fire
42:20yeah
42:21go on then
42:22there's probably a bit of rust in there, but
42:23mate, get it down
42:24mate, get it down
42:25mate, you look the part with the charcoal in your face
42:34a bit like tin
42:35oh, do you know what, fine, fine
42:45it does the job, right
42:46gentlemen, we have water
42:47what do you reckon series actually?
42:49it's not bad
42:50it's alright
42:51it's just
42:52it's just
42:53it's not bad at all
42:54it's kind of like the weakest cup of tea you've ever had in your life
43:00tony
43:01brought you a brew
43:02it's a desert island version of Yorkshire tea
43:05please enjoy
43:06smells good
43:08looks good
43:10looks good
43:11you're a good elf gentleman
43:15happy?
43:18it's bloody delicious
43:25this is some of the finished product
43:29looks like piss
43:31tastes a lot worse
43:33mind keeps wandering
43:34I keep on thinking about
43:35bottles of ice cold water
43:37or
43:38a can of
43:39a can of
43:40cola
43:41ice cold
43:42straight out of the fridge
43:44and all's I got to drink is this
43:47bloody warm
43:49worse than piss water
43:57it may not taste great
43:58but the men now have a reliable source of water
44:02the next problem
44:03is where their first meal comes from
44:07I'm properly hungry
44:08I am
44:09I've got a knot right there
44:11I just want something to eat
44:13I'm starving
44:15we've been talking about water all morning
44:17and in ten minutes the conversation's just switched
44:24when you're deprived of food it literally becomes all consuming
44:28it's all you think about
44:29it's all that motivates and drives you
44:31I need something
44:33these guys have got thirteen mouths to feed
44:35they've got to be resourceful
44:37oh hello
44:38what is it?
44:40scorpion
44:41in the fire
44:42there he is
44:43there he is
44:44got him
44:45I've got him
44:46he's got small claws guys
44:47he's one of the bad ones
44:48he's aggressive
44:49he's aggressive
44:50Jesus
44:51don't kill it if you're not going to eat it
44:52yeah

44:56ok
44:57let's kill him because I don't feel bad
44:59oh yeah
45:00fucking hell
45:01oh god
45:02I can see his guts inside
45:03that's not going to be tasty guys

45:34oh mate
45:35how does that taste?
45:36oh it's food
45:39I'm proud of you sir
45:40that was amazing
45:45the other thing that hunger does
45:46it saps your morale
45:48you know it's easy to be positive
45:49and upbeat
45:50and enthusiastic
45:51and energetic
45:52when you've got lots of energy
45:53but when you're experiencing failures
45:55it becomes a kind of spiraling downward circle
45:57of lack of food
45:59lack of morale
46:00lack of energy
46:03we're finding little bits
46:04but what we could do with it
46:05is
46:06a good hearty meal
46:07we need something of some substance
46:10I think I'm hallucinating
46:11I'm so hungry
46:12oh really?
46:14we're 13
46:16strapping blokes
46:18so we're going to need a feed
46:20and at the moment
46:22wondering where that's going to come from
46:24next time on the island
46:27I've never been so hungry in my whole life
46:29the fight for food begins
46:31we're all losing weight
46:33people are on the edge
46:34the fucking pelicans hate to be eating more than I do
46:36chuck it, chuck it
46:37chuck it, chuck it

46:52it broke the spear
46:53I have no idea where the next meal is coming from
46:55if I'd have known
46:56this is absolutely fucking nuts
46:58that it was going to be like this
47:01you got it
47:02you got it mate
