00:19Tesla has unveiled the long-awaited updated Model Y Coupe on its Chinese website.
00:24This revised model not only brings visual changes, but also a longer range.
00:33The new Tesla Model Y is appearing at a time when Tesla is in dire need of a success and is facing strong competition worldwide.
00:44The updated version could help boost sales in 2025 and beyond.
00:48Deliveries of the new model will begin in China in March and will then be expanded to markets such as Australia, Thailand and Hong Kong.
01:01The revised model features a new front end with an angular light bar reminiscent of Tesla's Cybertruck pickup and the Cybercap Robotaxi introduced late last year.
01:09It also has a bulb light bar at the rear.
01:18Aside from that, the exterior design remains largely identical to the current Model Y much like the Model 3 Highland Refresh that launched in late 2023.
01:27The updated Model Y, internally known as the Juniper update, bears a similar side profile to its predecessor.
01:32Inside, the redesigned Coupe gets a major update that brings it in line with the recently updated Model 3 sedan.
01:45This includes an ambient lighting strip that runs through the cabin, as well as a rear seat screen.
01:52Unlike the Model 3, the new Model Y appears to have a conventional turn signal stop.
01:57Tesla's Chinese website states that the new Model Y has been optimized for better efficiency and features an updated suspension that provides a smoother ride.
02:11The latter, along with a new set of tires and wheels, could address one of the biggest gripes Model Y owners have, its overly stiff suspension and bumpy ride quality.
02:20The long-range all-wheel drive model has an estimated range of 719 km, up 4.5% from the previously stated 688 km, according to testing in China.
02:38Tesla claims a 0-100 km acceleration time of just 4.3 seconds.
02:43Tesla also offers a more affordable rear-wheel drive variant with an estimated range of 593 km, up 7% from the 554 km of the model available before the update.
03:02Prices for both models are slightly higher in China than their predecessors.
03:06The long-range all-wheel drive model costs around âŹ41,400, while the rear-wheel drive variant is available for around âŹ35,900.
03:17These price increases correspond to approximately 4% and 5% respectively.
03:24The new Model Y is significant because most automakers give their vehicles a visual makeover every few years, periodically giving them a complete redesign.
03:32Tesla, on the other hand, has not changed the appearance of the Model Y since its launch in 2020.
03:41Industry analysts say this decision, and Tesla's generally limited and stagnant model lineup,
03:47has reduced demand for Tesla's as competition in the electric vehicle space has intensified.
03:51The Cybertruck, which was Tesla's latest model to launch in late 2023,
03:59has so far proven too expensive and polarizing to drive demand significantly.
04:06The Model Y is now the world's best-selling electric vehicle, and also the best-selling vehicle of any powertrain.
04:15While this is great for Tesla, it also means that EV buyers may be looking for something new and different.
04:20Whether the upgraded Model Y will be new and different enough to support Tesla's growth ambitions remains to be seen.
04:31Experts also say that Tesla needs more models, especially lower-priced ones, if it wants to continue to grow its sales.
04:38The company has said it will launch a new car this year, but has not yet provided any specific pricing.
