00:00Well, we'll have to because our profit, our markup is very minimal, right?
00:07And we're trying to please the motor in public, you know, and with the foreign exchange you can't get, you know, and all these things.
00:18So it is very hard.
00:21Owner of Azad Tire Service, Azad Mohammed spoke to TV6 News at his tire shop in Canaan, Tobago.
00:28Finance Minister Davindranath Tanku announced a 30 percent increase in import duties on foreign used tires during his budget presentation.
00:39We are already paying $20 plus watt for used tire for environmental tax.
00:46We also pay the Bureau of Standard. The duty on a used tire and the duty on a new tire is same 30 percent plus watt plus other charges incur.
00:58And the average population, three-quarter of the population in Tobago, use foreign used tires.
01:06Mr. Mohammed said the increase is a hard pill to swallow.
01:10We observed customers visiting the popular outlet to have their tires checked and changed.
01:16The used tires are good because you pay the Bureau of Standard to check the tires.
01:20And to every tire, they check each and every one of the tires.
01:25And it is hard for the population, whoever it is, buy used tires because they don't, they can use that money in other avenues like to buy food or gas or everything like that.
01:38So they are already charging $20 plus watt already.
01:43We are asking them, Madam Prime Minister and Mr. Tanku, not to increase it, if they could waver it.
01:50Elizabeth Williams, TV6 News.
