00:00Following the deadly flooding in Texas, one woman is using her quilter's touch to help put the community back together, one stitch at a time.
00:11This is just so unbelievable of how much help everyone is giving for our poppy challenge.
00:18That's Connie Quartz. Connie is a quilter on a mission.
00:22That mission is to assemble poppy block quilts, which symbolize remembrance and peaceful sleep.
00:27Hundreds of those quilts are now headed to central Texas to bring comfort and warmth to families impacted by last month's deadly flooding.
00:36This is what quilters do. We love sewing. We may never have an intention for these quilts, but now this is an intention that those quilts were made for.
00:43With those admirable intentions, Connie just kept on sewing.
00:47Then she started asking friends to help, then strangers online.
00:50Within a month, quilters from all across the country had shipped in more than 175 quilts to her shop for those in need.
00:58This is just one way we can help, you know, and it truly makes you feel warm and fuzzy when you can help somebody.
01:09Also constantly arriving at the shop, poppy blocks.
01:13So she is now the chief poppy pedal officer. She's a CCPO.
01:17The poppy blocks are all squares and rectangles with 90 and 45 degree angles.
01:23One block requires stitching 15 different straight lines on a sewing machine.
01:28The center has to be the same, I think.
01:31Are you a quilter? Because you can help. Anyone can send in even just one block.
01:36Each poppy quilt consists of 35 of those blocks.
01:39And on August 30th, Quartz will host a 24-hour sew-along where people from all over the world can join in to sew as many poppy blocks as possible.
01:48We'll have them sitting around the table like this and they will have poppy blocks cut and see how many we can get made in 24 hours.
01:56People from all over the world coming together to help mend the tear in a local community.
02:00Some people can give money. Some people can donate time. Some people can rescue.
02:07Quilters are just going to quilt. It's what we do.
02:12So, you know, everybody helps in their own way.
