00:02Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a sweeping new law expanding the state's power to label groups as domestic terrorist
00:11organizations, and it's already drawing sharp blowback.
00:13DeSantis signed the bill Monday in Tampa, giving Florida new authority to designate both domestic and foreign groups as terrorist
00:21organizations.
00:22The law also bars courts from applying foreign or religious law, including Sharia law, and blocks public funding from going
00:30to any group labeled as a terrorist organization.
00:33It creates a process where state law enforcement can flag groups with final approval from the governor and cabinet.
00:40It also carries real consequences on college campuses.
00:44Students found to support designated groups can be expelled, and schools can lose funding tied to those organizations.
00:51DeSantis said the legislation is, quote, the strongest action Florida has ever taken to protect its people from this influence.
00:59What I see happening in Europe, I see a migration not to assimilate, but to displace the current cultures that
01:05are there.
01:06We obviously are not going to allow that to happen here in the state of Florida.
01:10Civil rights groups are pushing back.
01:13In a statement to CBS, CARE, Florida's executive director, said, quote,
01:17quote, this is not just about CARE, this expanded and deeply flawed framework can attack any organization that dares to
01:24dissent.
01:25The measure passed along party lines and is expected to face legal challenges before it takes effect July 1st.
