00:00Rental car giant Hertz is joining forces with Amazon's automotive marketplace to sell used
00:05vehicles online. Customers who live within 75 miles of four U.S. cities, Dallas, Houston,
00:12Los Angeles, and Seattle, will have first dibs on cars and trucks retired from the Hertz rental
00:17fleet before the program expands to nearly 50 other cities. Amazon went into the car business
00:25in late 2024, selling only new vehicles through its automotive marketplace. Earlier this month,
00:31that business expanded to used cars, and now Hertz is Amazon's first fleet dealer. Hertz already sells
00:38hundreds of thousands of cars, trucks, and SUVs through its rent-to-buy program. Customers are
00:44allowed to rent a particular vehicle for three days before committing to buy it. The Amazon deal adds a
00:50new digital component. The partnership comes as Hertz works to complete a financial turnaround.
00:56The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic when the travel
01:01industry collapsed. Hertz emerged from bankruptcy in 2021 but reported a $2.9 billion loss in 2024,
01:10in part because of a failed push into the electric vehicle market. CEO Gil West recently said Hertz is
01:17now gaining some momentum in its rent-to-buy program, momentum that the Amazon partnership
01:22is designed to build on. For more unbiased updates, download the Straight Arrow News app or go to san.com.
