00:00Riding the rails just got faster. Amtrak is rolling out five new next-gen Acela trains today, each capable of hitting 160 miles an hour.
00:11The trains will run along Amtrak's busiest stretch, from Washington, D.C. to Boston.
00:17Acela first launched back in 2000, and since then, more than 69 million passengers have ridden.
00:23The new models can carry 27% more riders and feature upgrades like high-speed Wi-Fi, wider seats, and a smoother ride.
00:31For now, the old and new Acela will run side-by-side, adding more frequent trips along the Northeast Corridor.
00:38The rollout is three years behind schedule, but Amtrak says most parts were made in America, supporting about 1,200 jobs.
00:46The launch comes as Amtrak faces heavy financial pressure.
00:49It reported an operating loss of $705 million last year.
00:54Its CEO resigned under political pressure in March, after President Trump demanded changes.
01:00The company also cut 450 jobs.
01:02Congress has since approved $2.4 billion to keep Amtrak running.
01:07And by 2027, the railroad hopes to have all 28 next-gen Acelas on the tracks.
