00:00Many Americans still love their morning cup of coffee, but that daily pick-me-up is costing more, a lot more.
00:09The Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates the cost of roasted coffee jumped by 21.7% in August from a year ago,
00:18and the cost of instant coffee soared by 20.1% over that same time period.
00:24That's the biggest increase since 1997.
00:26The main reason for the spike in the cost of coffee?
00:30The Trump administration's tariff on Brazil, a whopping 50%.
00:34Brazil is the largest producer of coffee in the world.
00:37Add to that, the United States is the biggest importer of coffee globally.
00:42The National Coffee Association indicates at least 99% of coffee consumed in the U.S. is imported.
00:49The cost increases are being passed down to consumers, from big-name brands to small coffee shops.
00:55Folgers, owner, smuckers, raised prices in May and August, and warned it will probably increase coffee prices again.
01:04CNN reports the French coffee truck in New Orleans is adding a 4% tariff surcharge on all orders.
01:11One big name resisting a price increase so far, though it's warning about economic headwinds in 2026, is Starbucks.
