00:38These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow News.
00:44Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:45This morning, President Trump is taking his fight over sweeping global tariffs to the U.S. Supreme Court.
00:51The president is asking the justices to quickly decide whether he has the power to impose tariffs
00:57under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
01:01A federal appeals court ruled on Friday that Trump overstepped his authority with those tariffs,
01:06though the court left them in place until at least October 14th to give the Justice Department time to appeal.
01:12If we didn't have tariffs, we would be a very poor nation and we would be taken advantage of by every other nation
01:20in the world, friend and foe. We're not going to let that happen. And we have a very, very big case
01:24in the Supreme Court. I can only say this.
01:29Our country has a chance to be unbelievably rich again, but it can also be unbelievably poor again.
01:36If we don't win that case, our country is going to suffer so greatly.
01:42Late last night, the DOJ filed its appeal with the high court, along with a motion to expedite,
01:48meaning the case could be heard as soon as early November.
01:51The justices will have to decide next week whether to take it up.
01:55A spokesperson for the Liberty Justice Center, representing businesses challenging the tariffs,
02:00says they've agreed to the expedited timeline.
02:02Still unknown is what would happen if the United States is forced to pay back billions of dollars
02:07in tariff revenue that has already come in from foreign countries and how that would work.
02:12This morning, Portugal is reeling after a deadly funicular crash in Lisbon.
02:18The government declared a national day of mourning today, calling it the city's worst accident in recent memory.
02:24The Elevador de Gloria, a popular tourist streetcar, derailed yesterday evening
02:28and slammed into a building. The aftermath right there.
02:31At least 17 people were killed and more than 20 injured, five critically.
02:36The iconic yellow tram has been climbing the city's hills since 1885,
02:41linking tourists to panoramic views in Lisbon's Bairu Altu district.
02:47It can carry more than 40 passengers and draws millions every year.
02:51Investigators are now looking into whether a snapped cable or faulty brakes cause the derailment.
02:56Meanwhile, the city has halted operations of three other funiculars for inspection.
03:02Survivors of Jeffrey Epstein stood together on Capitol Hill Wednesday,
03:06demanding Congress release files the Justice Department has so far withheld.
03:11They're pushing for transparency on who enabled the financier's sex trafficking network
03:16and calling on lawmakers to back a bipartisan bill to force disclosure.
03:20Many shared their stories and directly responded to President Trump,
03:24who has repeatedly dismissed the issue as a hoax.
03:28Mr. President Donald J. Trump, I am a registered Republican.
03:32Not that that matters because this is not political.
03:34However, I cordially invite you to the Capitol to meet me in person
03:38so you can understand this is not a hoax.
03:40We are real human beings. This is real trauma.
03:43When asked about the survivor's press conference, the president reiterated his position.
03:47So this is a Democrat hoax that never ends.
03:53You know, it reminds me a little of the Kennedy situation.
03:57We gave him everything over and over again, more and more and more.
04:00And nobody's ever satisfied.
04:02From what I understand, I could check.
04:04But from what I understand, thousands of pages of documents have been given.
04:09But it's really a Democrat hoax because they're trying to get people to talk about something
04:14that's totally irrelevant to the success that we've had as a nation since I've been president.
04:20Survivors now say they plan to compile their own list of names tied to Epstein's circle,
04:26independently of the government.
04:28Us Epstein survivors have been discussing creating our own list.
04:33We know the names.
04:35Many of us were abused by them.
04:37Now, together as survivors, we will confidentially compile the names we all know.
04:43At the same time, lawmakers are divided.
04:47Republican Thomas Massey and Democrat Ro Khanna are leading an effort to force a House vote to release the files.
04:53They need just a few more signatures to move it to the floor.
04:56For now, House leadership and the White House oppose the push,
05:00leaving the fight over the Epstein files very much unresolved.
05:04Three West Coast states are breaking away from the CDC on vaccine guidelines.
05:09Governors of California, Oregon, and Washington announced a new West Coast Health Alliance
05:15to coordinate public health policy on their own.
05:18In a statement, the governor said,
05:20The new alliance represents a unified regional response to the Trump administration's
05:25destruction of the CDC's credibility and scientific integrity.
05:29The move follows last week's shakeup at the CDC when Director Susan Menares was forced out
05:35after clashing with HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on vaccine policy.
05:41Four top officials resigned in solidarity with her.
05:44California Governor Gavin Newsom said the alliance will provide, quote,
05:48guidance grounded in science, not ideology.
05:51But Florida is taking a very different approach.
05:54The state announced Wednesday it is ending all vaccine mandates for children,
05:58a move endorsed by Governor Ron DeSantis.
06:01A spokesman for the Department of Health and Human Services told the New York Times
06:05in a statement that it will, quote,
06:07ensure policy is based on rigorous evidence and gold standard science,
06:11not the failed politics of the pandemic.
06:14The new alliance out West will issue its own guidance on childhood vaccines,
06:19flu and COVID shots in the coming weeks.
06:21A federal judge in Massachusetts has ordered the Trump administration to unfreeze
06:26more than $2 billion in grants for Harvard University,
06:29calling the administration's move a, quote,
06:32targeted ideologically motivated assault.
06:35Back in April, the White House put the money on hold after Harvard refused demands to scrap its
06:40DEI programs and to crack down on anti-Semitism after pro-Palestinian rallies on campus.
06:46Judge Allison Burroughs ruled the move punished Harvard for not complying,
06:50a direct violation of the university's First Amendment rights.
06:53She noted the funding freeze stalled key research projects
06:57and said the school's anti-Semitism problems were not legally tied to the federal funding.
07:02The White House plans to appeal.
07:04Finally this morning, the Powerball jackpot is looking less like a prize
07:08and more like a national budget.
07:10Isn't that the truth?
07:11After 41 straight drawings without a grand prize winner,
07:15the jackpot has ballooned to the third largest in history.
07:18Saturday's drawing is now worth an estimated $1.7 billion.
07:24Beat the odds, which, by the way, are 1 in 292 million,
07:27and you could walk away with a lump sum of $770 million.
07:31No one hit the big one last night, but four people are $2 million richer.
07:35Not bad.
07:36And 11 others have a cool million coming their way.
07:38Not a bad consolation prize, right?
07:40Lottery officials remind you the odds are long, but hey, somebody eventually wins.
07:44The next drawing is Saturday night, so if you've got a couple of extra bucks and a dream,
07:50well, good luck.
07:51And if you win, goodbye mortgage.
07:54Wouldn't that be nice?
07:55All right, before we head out, here's what we're tracking today.
07:57At 10, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. testifies on President Trump's
08:03health care agenda.
08:04Then at 1, First Lady Melania Trump leads a White House task force meeting
08:08on artificial intelligence in education.
08:10At 4, the National Capital Planning Commission takes up President Trump's proposed ballroom
08:16addition to the White House.
08:17Then tonight, Donald Trump hosts tech and business leaders in the first event at the White House's
08:23newly renovated Rose Garden.
08:24On the guest list, Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, and Bill Gates, to name a few.
08:29Who's not?
