00:33Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:35This morning, the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk is now facing seven felony charges.
00:42And prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty.
00:4522-year-old Tyler Robinson appeared in court by video Tuesday, saying little as a judge in Utah read the charges,
00:52including aggravated murder, witness tampering, and obstruction of justice.
00:56Prosecutors say Robinson fired a bolt-action rifle from a rooftop,
01:01striking Kirk in the neck as he spoke to students at Utah Valley University.
01:06They say DNA on the rifle trigger matches Robinson,
01:10and he left a chilling note under his keyboard that read, quote,
01:14I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I'm going to take it.
01:18According to court documents, Robinson and his roommate were in a romantic relationship.
01:22Now we're seeing their text exchange from the day of the shooting.
01:26Let's take a look together, and I'll narrate.
01:29Tyler texts, drop what you're doing.
01:31Look under my keyboard.
01:33What? You're joking, right?
01:34The roommate responded.
01:36Tyler said, I am still okay, my love, but I'm stuck in Orem for a little while longer yet.
01:41Shouldn't be long until I can come home, but I got to grab my rifle still.
01:45To be honest, I had hoped to keep this secret till I died of old age.
01:49I am sorry to involve you.
01:52The roommate asked, you weren't the one who did it, right?
01:55I am. I'm sorry, Robinson said.
01:58The roommate replied, I thought they caught the person.
02:01Robinson, no.
02:02They grabbed some crazy old dude, then interrogated someone in similar clothing.
02:07I had planned to grab my rifle from my drop point shortly after,
02:10but most of that side of town got locked down.
02:13It's quiet, almost enough to get out, but there's one vehicle lingering.
02:17Why? The roommate asked.
02:20Why did I do it?
02:22Yeah.
02:23Robinson then texted, I had enough of his hatred.
02:26Some hate can't be negotiated out.
02:29If I am able to grab my rifle unseen, I will have left no evidence.
02:33Going to attempt to retrieve it again.
02:35Hopefully they have moved on.
02:36I haven't seen anything about them finding it.
02:39Prosecutors say Robinson planned the attack for more than a week
02:42and urged his partner to delete their texts.
02:45He was arrested days later near his hometown of St. George, Utah.
02:49He stood back in court September 29th.
02:52In Washington, FBI Director Cash Patel is set to testify
02:56before the House Judiciary Committee this morning,
03:00facing questions about his handling of the Charlie Kirk assassination investigation
03:04and his overall leadership at the Bureau.
03:07It comes after a fiery four-and-a-half-hour Senate hearing yesterday
03:11where Patel clashed with Democrats repeatedly.
03:13In his opening statement, ranking member Dick Durbin condemned Patel
03:18for spreading, quote, mass confusion after he posted on X
03:21that Kirk's killer had been caught hours after the shooting,
03:25a claim that turned out to be false.
03:27Patel stood by the post.
03:30Could I have been more careful in my verbiage
03:32and included an A subject instead of subject?
03:35Sure, in the heat of the moment, but I was doing the best I could.
03:37You know, Kander, I don't quite get that,
03:39because if we have our man, that would suggest to the public
03:42that everybody can rest and relax
03:45and not then continue to provide information to the local law enforcement and to you.
03:50So that was a mistake.
03:52I don't see it as a mistake.
03:53I see it as something working with the public
03:55to identify that there was a subject in custody.
03:58Patel was also pressed on whether 22-year-old Tyler Robinson acted alone.
04:03He said the case is, quote, very much ongoing
04:05and that the FBI is investigating more than 20 Discord users
04:09from a chat room where Robinson allegedly took responsibility for the shooting.
04:14But Kirk's case was just one flashpoint.
04:17Patel faced heavy scrutiny over his handling of the Epstein files,
04:21including the decision to move Jelaine Maxwell
04:23to a minimum security prison in Texas after her interview
04:27with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.
04:29That's when tensions boiled over and insults flew.
04:33The Bureau of Prisons decided on their own,
04:36without any consultation with Blanche or anyone else,
04:40that they were going to suddenly, after this interview,
04:43completely unrelated to this interview,
04:46completely unrelated to anything she said,
04:49move her to a prison not suitable for a sex offender.
04:52Do you want the American people to believe that?
04:55Do you think they're stupid?
04:57No.
04:57I think the American people believe the truth,
05:00that I'm not in the weeds on the everyday movements of inmates.
05:02Oh, you're not in the weeds?
05:03What I am doing is protecting this country,
05:06providing historic reform,
05:08and combating the weaponization of intelligence by the likes of you.
05:13You are a political buffoon at best.
05:15Well, you can take an internet troll.
05:17Take it to the bank that the FBI is protecting this country
05:21and the state and citizens of the California.
05:23We have seen historic reform.
05:26We have seen nothing more than an internet point of order.
05:28Next, Patel got into a shouting match with Senator Cory Booker,
05:31who ripped him over the Kirk case,
05:34the Epstein files,
05:35and the removal of FBI agents.
05:37Watch.
05:37I think you're not going to be around long.
05:40I think this might be your last oversight hearing.
05:42Because as much as you supplicate yourself to the will of Donald Trump
05:45and not the Constitution of the United States of America,
05:49Donald Trump has shown us in his first term and in this term,
05:52he is not loyal to people like you.
05:55He will cut you loose.
05:57That rant of false information
06:00does not bring this country together.
06:03If you want to work on bringing this country,
06:05it's my time, not yours.
06:06My God, my God.
06:08If you want to talk about...
06:09If you want to talk about...
06:09...biding this country,
06:10I follow you on your social media posts
06:13that tear this country apart.
06:15It is my time to address your falsehoods.
06:17You can try all you want
06:19to not take responsibility for what you have said.
06:24Sir, you're making a mockery of this committee.
06:26Sir, you don't tell me my time is over.
06:28Today's hearing in the House begins at 10 a.m. Eastern.
06:31Senator Ted Cruz yesterday called the Senate session
06:33political theater.
06:35We'll see if today brings more of the same.
06:38The director who was ousted from the CDC
06:41just weeks after her Senate confirmation
06:43is set to testify this morning on Capitol Hill.
06:47CBS News has obtained the prepared testimony
06:49of Susan Minares.
06:51She's set to tell the Senate Health Committee today
06:53that she was fired after refusing to pre-approve
06:56vaccine recommendations regardless of scientific evidence
07:00and declining to fire career CDC scientists.
07:03One quote reads,
07:05Secretary Kennedy demanded two things of me
07:08that were inconsistent with my oath of office
07:11and the ethics required of a public official.
07:14He directed me to commit in advance
07:16to approving every ACIP recommendation
07:19regardless of the scientific evidence.
07:22He also directed me to dismiss career officials
07:25responsible for vaccine policy without cause.
07:28He said, if I was unwilling to do both,
07:31I should resign.
07:33Minares says she refused and was fired.
07:36HHS denies her claims, calling her insubordinate
07:39and accusing her of undermining
07:41the Trump administration's agenda.
07:43President Trump and First Lady Melania
07:46are in the UK this morning,
07:48welcomed Tuesday by dignitaries
07:50and members of the Royal Air Force
07:52as their state visit began.
07:54You see them there.
07:55Later today, they will be honored guests
07:57of King Charles and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle.
08:00The welcome ceremony includes a carriage procession,
08:03a military flyover,
08:05and a banquet at St. George's Hall,
08:07complete with speeches and toasts.
08:09The trip began with the major announcement,
08:11a new technology pact.
08:12Between the United States and Britain,
08:15big names like Google, Microsoft, and NVIDIA
08:17have committed tens of millions of dollars
08:19to develop AI, quantum computing,
08:22and nuclear energy.
08:24British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it
08:26a deal that will shape the future
08:28for millions on both sides of the Atlantic.
08:31But the visit to Windsor Castle
08:33took an unexpected turn Tuesday night.
08:36Police arrested four people
08:37after images of Trump and convicted sex trafficker
08:40Jeffrey Epstein were projected
08:42onto Windsor Castle.
08:44The projections included photos of Trump and Epstein together
08:47and a lewd birthday message
08:49Trump allegedly sent Epstein in 2003.
08:53TikTok may have just dodged another ban
08:56after a breakthrough deal
08:58between the United States and China.
09:00Treasury Secretary Scott Besson met face-to-face
09:02with Chinese officials in Madrid this week,
09:05finalizing what both sides are calling
09:07a framework agreement that would overhaul
09:09TikTok's U.S. operations.
09:12The Wall Street Journal reports that under the deal,
09:14TikTok's American business would shift
09:17to a new U.S.-based entity
09:19with a group of big-name investors,
09:21including Oracle, Silver Lake,
09:23and Andreessen Horowitz,
09:24owning 80% of the company.
09:27TikTok's algorithm, developed in China,
09:29would be licensed but run by U.S. engineers.
09:33Oracle would keep handling
09:34American's user data.
09:36President Trump announced the arrangement
09:38to reporters outside the White House on Tuesday.
09:40Well, we have a deal on TikTok.
09:42I've reached a deal with China.
09:43I'm going to speak to President Xi on Friday
09:46to confirm everything up.
09:48We made a very good trade deal
09:50and I hope good for both countries,
09:51but a very different deal
09:53than they've made in the past.
09:54We have a group of very big companies
09:56that want to buy it.
09:57And, you know, the kids wanted it so badly.
09:59I had parents calling me up.
10:01They don't want it for themselves.
10:02They want it for their kids.
10:03They say, if I don't get it done,
10:05they're in big trouble with their kids.
10:07Trump has pushed the official ban deadline
10:09to December 16th.
10:11If this deal holds,
10:12it could finally end the years-long battle over TikTok
10:15and keep the app online
10:16for its 170 million American users.
10:20Finally this morning,
10:21the next time you reach for that favorite tub
10:24of Ben and Jerry's,
10:25it'll be just Ben.
10:26Not officially, but for the first time,
10:28Jerry Greenfield is out.
10:30Jerry's departure was announced
10:32by Ben Cohen himself,
10:33who posted his longtime partner's
10:35resignation letter online.
10:37In it, Greenfield calls it
10:38one of the hardest decisions of his life,
10:41saying standing up for the values of justice,
10:44equity, and our shared humanity
10:45has never been more important.
10:48And yet Ben and Jerry's has been silenced,
10:50sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power.
10:53He's talking about a long-running feud
10:55with Unilever, the megacore,
10:57that brought back Ben and Jerry's in 2000.
10:59Ben and Jerry's built their brand
11:01on more than ice cream,
11:03taking stands on climate change,
11:05police reform, Trump policies,
11:07and most recently, Israel's war in Gaza.
11:10Greenfield says that social mission
11:12is now being muzzled,
11:13and the independent voice they were promised
11:15in the sale agreement has melted away.
11:18So what's Ben and Jerry's without Jerry?
11:20Well, hopefully tasty
11:21for its supporters and customers.
11:24By the way, in pre-reading the story,
11:25that reminded me,
11:25I never made it to DQ for ice cream this summer.
11:29I'm a big Dairy Queen fan,
11:30big presence here in Omaha, Nebraska.
11:32I usually like the large chocolate and vanilla
11:34mixed together with a cherry shell.
11:35I never stopped in.
11:37That bums me out.
11:39I guess, you know,
11:40trying to eliminate sweets and eat healthy,
11:42not all that fun sometimes.
11:44All right, before we head out,
11:45here's what we're tracking today.
11:47The former CDC director heads to the Hill this morning
11:49with Susan Menara set to testify
11:51after her controversial ouster over vaccine policy.
11:55Also at 10, President Trump
11:57and First Lady Melania Trump
11:59participate in a St. George's Chapel visit
12:01and wreath-laying at the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II.
12:05Then at 2.30, all eyes on the Fed
12:07with a rate cut likely
12:09as Jerome Powell gives a press conference.
12:11And at 4, Vice President J.D. Vance
12:14hits the trail again,
12:15visiting a Michigan manufacturer
12:17as he promotes President Trump's agenda.
