00:36Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelli.
00:38We begin this morning in Michigan,
00:39where a former Marine turned a Sunday service into a scene of horror.
00:43Police say he rammed his pickup into a church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
00:48Opened fire, then set the building on fire about an hour northwest of Detroit.
00:52You see the smoke there.
00:53Officers shot and killed him, but not before four people were dead and at least eight others hurt.
00:59The gunman has been identified as 40-year-old Iraq War veteran Thomas Jacob Sanford.
01:05Police are still combing through the charred rubble this morning,
01:08searching for any additional victims.
01:10The Grand Blank Township police chief says some people are still unaccounted for.
01:15Investigators believe Sanford used an accelerant to ignite the blaze.
01:19The church this morning is a total loss.
01:21For this incident, the fire started basically as a suspect.
01:26All indications on this investigation are the suspect used an accelerant of some sort,
01:30we believe gasoline, and lit the church on fire.
01:34Was it an IED you may have used?
01:37At this point, I'm not going to comment on IEDs.
01:40There were, I will confirm that there were some suspected explosive devices that were located.
01:46But as far as using them to initiate the blaze, I can't say that.
01:50The FBI is leading the case, calling it an act of targeted violence, but a motive has not been confirmed.
01:57Michigan State Police say Sunday night brought even more fear.
02:01Additional bomb threats across the community.
02:04Some devices were found, but officials are not releasing details.
02:07President Trump responded on Truth Social, calling it yet another targeted attack on Christians in the United States.
02:14He said he has been briefed and declared this epidemic of violence must end immediately.
02:20President Trump will be crashing an extraordinary gathering of America's top leaders tomorrow.
02:25Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had ordered every one-star general and above to Quantico tomorrow
02:31for what was billed as a short speech on warrior ethos.
02:34Now the White House confirms the president himself will attend,
02:38a last-minute move that instantly overshadows Hegseth's role and adds a heavy layer of security.
02:44Trump told NBC News Sunday it's just a pep talk, quote, an esprit de corps moment,
02:49to celebrate how well the military is doing.
02:52But with hundreds of generals and admirals summoned from around the world,
02:56some flying in from the Middle East and the Pacific,
02:58critics say the cost, the risk of having so much brass in one place,
03:03and the timing just days before a possible government shutdown all raise serious concerns.
03:08President Trump says a government shutdown is now looking likely after tomorrow.
03:14In a phone interview with CBS News Sunday,
03:16the president said he does not see, quote,
03:18how we're going to solve this issue before Tuesday's deadline.
03:22Negotiations remain at a stalemate,
03:24with Democrats insisting on health care funding in the bill
03:27and Republicans refusing to budge.
03:29Trump is set to host top congressional leaders this afternoon,
03:32Schumer, Thune, Johnson and Jeffries, for one more round of talks.
03:36The House has already passed a stopgap bill to keep the government funded for seven weeks,
03:41while Congress hammers out long-term spending.
03:43But unless there's a breakthrough, a shutdown will hit at midnight Tuesday.
03:48New York City will have a new mayor come January 1st.
03:52Incumbent Eric Adams is dropping his re-election bid as an independent.
03:57Adams announced in a video posted on X that media speculation about his future
04:02and a finance board decision to withhold millions of dollars in public funds
04:06forced him to call it quits.
04:08So it's one term and out.
04:10Adams had been running fourth in the polls,
04:12far behind frontrunner Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist.
04:16Political experts say his exit could give a slight boost to Andrew Cuomo's comeback bid.
04:21There's also speculation Adams may join the Trump administration.
04:25Earlier this year, the Trump Justice Department dropped a federal probe into Adams
04:29as his popularity at City Hall plummeted amid scandals involving top aides.
04:34Now he's bowing out after just four years.
04:37To the tropics now, where two powerful storms are spinning side by side.
04:42You're about to see on satellite here Hurricane Umberto churning in the Atlantic.
04:47Still a dangerous Category 4 storm.
04:49Well, just to the left of it there, that's Tropical Storm Imelda.
04:52It has formed near the Bahamas.
04:54Imelda is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it tracks north
04:58before curving away from the U.S. East Coast by midweek.
05:01But in the Bahamas, the impact is already being felt.
05:05Streets in Nassau are flooding.
05:07Flights canceled and gusty winds are keeping boats docked and beaches empty.
05:12Forecasters warn parts of the island could see up to a foot of rain and dangerous storm surge.
05:17Umberto, meantime, is taking aim at Bermuda, where a tropical storm watch is in effect.
05:23The storm is not expected to make a U.S. landfall,
05:26but dangerous surf and rip currents will batter much of the East Coast this week.
05:30From San Juan to the Super Bowl,
05:33Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny is taking over the biggest stage in sports.
05:38The NFL made it official last night,
05:40announcing the three-time Grammy winner will headline the Super Bowl this February
05:44at Levi's Stadium in San Francisco.
05:47Bad Bunny calling it a, quote,
05:48touchdown for my people, my culture, and our history.
05:52His music has put Spanish language hits at the top of the global charts.
05:56The show will be produced by Jay-Z's Rock Nation in partnership with Apple Music.
06:01The Super Bowl halftime show is consistently the most watched performance of the year.
06:06Last year's halftime entertainment with Kendrick Lamar drew more than 130 million viewers.
06:12Finally this morning, a story that will have you smiling, laughing, and maybe even shedding a tear.
06:18A 95-year-old man from Omaha, Nebraska, often has one of these in hand.
06:24A fan with Taylor Swift's picture on it.
06:28In fact, he might be the oldest Taylor Swift fan in the entire country.
06:3595-year-old Frank Urias is a resident at Remington Heights Retirement Community,
06:40only about five miles from the Strait Aero News studios here in Nebraska.
06:43Over the last month or so, Frank started listening to Taylor Swift music and reading about the pop superstar.
06:50He was hooked and has now started a Taylor Swift fan club at the nursing home
06:54that involves dozens of his fellow residents.
06:57My goal is to make sure that we are bound together and love each other
07:04because we have such a short time ahead of us.
07:10They are sending a card to Taylor Swift and hoping one day she might walk through the doors of Remington Heights
07:16and pay them a visit.
07:17We love you, Taylor!
