00:00The shooting in Minneapolis is detonating a political fight in Washington,
00:06one that could shut down part of the federal government by the end of the week.
00:10Senate Democrats are drawing a hard line.
00:12They say they will not vote to fund the Department of Homeland Security after the ICE killing,
00:17and they're daring Republicans to strip DHS out of the broader spending deal.
00:22Minority Leader Chuck Schumer put it bluntly over the weekend,
00:24saying what's happening in Minnesota is appalling,
00:26and Democrats won't move forward if DHS stays in the package.
00:32Patty Murray, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee,
00:35flipped her position over the weekend.
00:37She had been trying to hold the deal together.
00:40Now, she said in a post she won't support the DHS bill as written,
00:44adding federal agents cannot murder people in broad daylight and face zero consequences.
00:49That puts a partial government shutdown back on the table, possibly as soon as Friday,
00:54because Republicans need Democratic votes to pass the remaining spending bills.
00:59Some Republicans are breaking from the White House's tone.
01:03Senator Bill Cassidy says on X,
01:05the credibility of ICE and DHS is at stake
01:08and is calling for a full joint federal and state investigation.
01:12But Senator Lindsey Graham is pushing the opposite direction,
01:16telling Democrats,
01:16now is not the time to defund one of our major national security priorities.
01:22And on CNN Sunday,
01:23Chris Murphy,
01:24the top Democrat on the subcommittee that oversees DHS funding,
01:28went even further.
01:29We cannot fund a Department of Homeland Security that is murdering American citizens,
01:34that is traumatizing little boys and girls all across the country in violation of the law.
01:39According to the AP, Democrats are now demanding changes to the DHS bill itself,
01:44including warrant requirements for ICE arrests,
01:47stronger training standards and limits on ICE operating inside U.S. cities.
01:52The problem?
01:53The House already passed all six remaining funding bills as one package.
01:58Pulling DHS out now is procedurally messy and time is short.
02:03Add to that,
02:04the Senate isn't even back until tomorrow because of the snowstorm,
02:07and the House is out all week.
02:09All right.
02:10All right.
