00:29Down to the wire.
00:30Michigan's Democratic Senate primary is still too close to call, with thousands of votes left to count.
00:36Plus, running low.
00:38New reports indicate the U.S. has depleted some of its most important missiles as the war with Iran stretches
00:44into its sixth month.
00:46And rip it up.
00:48President Trump orders a do-over on the new White House helipad, scrapping weeks of construction.
00:56The stories that matter, clear and credible, from across the country to around the world.
01:02These are your unbiased updates from Straight Arrow.
01:07Good morning, I'm Craig DeGrelly.
01:09We begin this morning in Michigan, where one of the nation's most closely watched primaries still has not been decided.
01:16The race for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate remains too close to call,
01:20with progressive Abdul El-Sayed holding a very narrow lead over moderate Congresswoman Haley Stevens.
01:27Elections officials are still counting ballots, and both campaigns say the process could continue throughout the day.
01:33One thing the candidates do agree on, whoever emerges will need to unite the party by November.
01:39Whatever happens tonight, we have a responsibility to assure that we unite to make sure that Mike Rogers never sees
01:50the inside of the U.S. Senate.
01:52We've got to wake up and be ready to go, because if we are going to win this thing, which
01:56we are,
01:59we are going to have to get ready and show Mike Rogers what a little stick-it-to-um looks
02:06like.
02:07Meanwhile, Sunrise Movement co-founder William Lawrence won the Democratic primary in Michigan's 7th Congressional District.
02:14He will face Republican incumbent Tom Barrett in one of the country's key House battlegrounds this fall.
02:20In the 4th District, Trump-backed Republican Bill Huizenga will face Democratic State Senator Sean McCann in November.
02:28And in the open 10th District, created by Republican John James' run for governor,
02:33Trump endorsed Army veteran Mike Bouchard will face Democrat Christina Hines, a former special victims prosecutor.
02:40James won the GOP nomination for governor, so he'll face off against Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
02:46Out West, two days before President Trump visited his Southern California golf club,
02:52authorities arrested an armed man they say had been watching security preparations.
02:57The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department identified the man as 38-year-old Janine John Talley of Downey, California.
03:04Deputies responded after plainclothes federal agents flagged his behavior at the Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes.
03:12Authorities say Talley was carrying a 16-round magazine loaded with hollow-point ammunition,
03:17and a search of his vehicle turned up a loaded pistol with a round in the chamber, along with a
03:22second loaded magazine.
03:24CBS News reports Talley told club employees he worked for the State Department and wanted to meet with Secretary of
03:29State Marco Rubio.
03:31Investigators say that claim was false.
03:33In a search of his home, investigators recovered body armor, high-capacity magazines, bulk ammunition, and two guns,
03:41including an illegally modified AR-style rifle and a 1911 .45 caliber pistol.
03:48Federal prosecutors have charged Talley with possession of an unregistered short-barreled rifle.
03:53He also faces a separate Los Angeles County case that includes a 2025 robbery charge,
03:59along with two weapons offenses stemming from this investigation.
04:03Investigators have not disclosed a motive.
04:05The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, the U.S. Secret Service, and local authorities continue to investigate.
04:11Trump visited the club on Tuesday for a Republican National Committee fundraiser.
04:16In Washington, the Senate is expected to take up Todd Blanche's nomination for attorney general sometime this week,
04:23after Republicans cleared the biggest hurdle to his confirmation on Tuesday.
04:27The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced President Trump's nomination on a party-line vote,
04:33after two Republican holdouts agreed to support him.
04:36The breakthrough came after Blanche formally rescinded the controversial $1.8 billion anti-weaponization fund
04:43and narrowed a separate tax immunity provision that had raised concerns among Republican Senators John Cornyn and Tom Tillis.
04:51Cornyn told members he voted for Blanche because, quote,
04:54the Department of Justice does not need a temporary, unconfirmed nominee as our nation's top law enforcement official.
05:01Trump needs someone in this role as well with a strong legal mind.
05:05Democrats argue those written assurances don't go far enough,
05:08saying a future Justice Department order could bring the fund back,
05:12and noting the government still has other ways to compensate people who claim they were targeted by the federal government.
05:18Senate Republicans again just rubber-stamped Trump's corruption
05:22with their vote to advance Todd Blanche from the Judiciary Committee.
05:27Make no mistake, Blanche has no intention of stopping Trump's corruption.
05:32He spent his whole career enabling it.
05:35Illinois Senator Dick Durbin told members, quote,
05:38the cop-beater's fund can easily be revived with a new order from the Department of Justice
05:4315 minutes after Mr. Blanche is confirmed as attorney general.
05:47With Republicans holding a 53-to-47-seat majority,
05:51Blanche appears to have a clear path to confirmation when the full Senate takes up his nomination.
05:56The United States is reportedly burning through some of its most advanced missiles
06:01faster than it can replace them as the war with Iran continues.
06:05According to multiple reports, the U.S. has used nearly its entire stockpile
06:10of some long-range precision missiles since Operation Epic Fury began on February 28th.
06:16Sources told CBS News the military has fired virtually all of its Army tactical missile systems,
06:22along with its newer precision strike missiles.
06:25Reuters reports the Pentagon's latest assessment also shows THAAD and Patriot air defense missiles
06:31are being used faster than can be replaced.
06:34The report says the U.S. has expended about 80 percent of its THAAD interceptors
06:39and roughly half of its Patriot missiles.
06:41However, the Pentagon is pushing back on any suggestion the military is running short.
06:46Chief Spokesman Sean Parnell told CBS News,
07:02President Trump is ordering a major do-over at the White House
07:06after deciding a new helipad under construction just didn't look right.
07:11The Washington Post was first to report that Trump told contractors to redo weeks of work
07:17after becoming frustrated with the project's appearance.
07:20According to the Post, the president wants the new helipad to appear level with the horizon,
07:25even though the South Lawn itself slopes downhill.
07:29Photos show crews have already removed part of a granite presidential seal
07:33that was being installed as they reworked the project.
07:36The helipad is part of a broader series of changes underway at the White House,
07:40where construction crews are also working on other renovation projects around the grounds.
07:45Last month, Trump told reporters it's time for a change.
07:49During my administration, they ordered brand-new helicopters, the big ones,
07:54the ones for president. It's called Marine One.
07:56And our other Marine Ones are about 40 years old.
07:59They're all like Air Force One. You know, it's time to make a change.
08:02And other presidents wouldn't do that because they think it's not good to make a change to luxury,
08:06but you've got to do it.
08:07Crews are building the new pad to accommodate the next generation of Marine One helicopters,
08:11which produce exhaust hot enough to damage the South Lawn.
08:16Lockheed Martin, which owns the company that makes the presidential helicopters,
08:19is paying for the project, estimated to cost more than $5 million.
08:24Finally this morning, Central America's most active volcano is erupting again.
08:29The Fuego Volcano in Guatemala has forced evacuations, shelter-in-place orders,
08:35and raised fears of dangerous mudslides.
08:38Incredible images are coming out of San Juan Alotenango with glowing volcanic rock,
08:44ash, and gas erupting from the crater overnight.
08:47Wow.
08:47Falling ash has made conditions dangerous,
08:50and so have mudflows stretching more than four miles down the mountain.
08:54About 30,000 people in communities below the volcano have been affected,
08:58with hundreds evacuated to emergency shelters.
09:01The eruption began Monday morning,
09:03prompting Guatemalan officials to raise the alert level to red
09:07and warn that the next 72 hours will be critical.
09:10Rain in the forecast could make the mudflows even more dangerous.
09:14Fuego, which translates to volcano of fire,
09:17is one of the most active volcanoes in the region.
09:20In 2018, a major eruption destroyed an entire village and killed hundreds of people.
