00:48This morning, investigators say they've arrested a man they believe started one of the three wildfires still burning in Spokane,
00:55Washington.
00:55Spokane County Sheriff's investigators arrested 37-year-old Aaron Farinacci Monday on suspicion of first-degree arson in connection with
01:04the Old Trails fire.
01:05He's being held on a $1 million bond.
01:08Investigators say a witness reported seeing Farinacci kneeling in the grass where the fire is believed to have started.
01:15The sheriff added Farinacci has a prior manslaughter conviction out of Arizona.
01:20And by the way, it is a continuing and ongoing investigation.
01:24We will be looking into any other crimes Mr. Farinacci may have committed in the past.
01:31We will also be looking into other charges that may come about as the facts and circumstances of the Old
01:40Trail fire come to light and come to be known.
01:43Just know that this charge is what we have probable cause for right now.
01:49Meanwhile, today, firefighters are racing to take advantage of their best weather condition in days before hotter, drier weather returns
01:57later this week.
01:58Fast-moving flames have destroyed more than 700 homes, businesses, and other buildings.
02:04Tens of thousands of people remain under evacuation orders.
02:08The fires are still uncontained, but lighter winds and cooler temperatures today are giving crews their first real opportunity to
02:16slow them down.
02:17The scenes across Spokane are staggering.
02:20Burned-out neighborhoods, twisted cars, and in some places, only chimneys left standing.
02:26Among those returning home, Lizzie Davis.
02:29She returned to see the house she grew up in relegated to just charred ruins.
02:34My dad had actually just finished paying off the house.
02:37Yeah.
02:38He worked really hard for that.
02:45And I'm really grateful for everything that he was able to provide for my family.
02:51It was a beautiful home.

02:56It's a very, very hard loss.
02:59Wow, just heartbreaking.
03:01Officials say they've received hundreds of reports of missing people, though most have now been accounted for.
03:07And so far, there have been no confirmed deaths or major injuries.
03:11Forecasters warn the break in the weather will be short-lived, with those hotter, drier conditions expected to return in
03:18days,
03:19threatening to reignite the firefighters' battle.
03:22Now to the war.
03:24President Trump says he's giving Iran one last chance to reach a deal with the United States.
03:29Iran, however, continues to insist it is not holding direct talks with Washington.
03:34Iran's foreign minister said he spoke late Monday with his counterparts in Oman and Pakistan,
03:40as Oman continues to serve as a go-between.
03:43But Trump told reporters Monday the two sides are talking,
03:47saying Iran requested the contacts with the backing of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar.
03:52We're not talking, when you ask me, no, we're not talking, I'll say it.
03:56But we are talking right now, we're talking.
03:58And we're talking at the request of Iran, backed by Saudi Arabia,
04:03backed by UAE, and backed by Qatar in particular, but others also.
04:09Many, many countries call.
04:10This is a last chance.
04:11This is not something that, if it doesn't happen,
04:15this is a last chance for them to sign a good document.
04:20Yeah, please.
04:21Trump said he expects talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz to begin within the next day or two,
04:27followed by negotiations over Iran's nuclear program.
04:31He said he believes an agreement is possible,
04:33but added that denuclearization will take a little while.
04:38President Trump is still publicly criticizing U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro
04:43after her office abruptly dropped the highest-profile case
04:47in the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool investigation.
04:50Last week, Pirro's office asked a judge to dismiss the felony case
04:54against former Olympian David Hearn,
04:57saying newly released evidence shows the widespread damage to the pool
05:01was largely caused by a flawed, rushed installation, not vandalism.
05:05Since then, prosecutors have also moved to drop three related misdemeanor cases.
05:11The filing directly contradicted months of claims from the Trump administration
05:15that vandals were responsible for the damage.
05:18On Monday, the president made it clear he vehemently disagrees with Pirro
05:22and publicly rebuked her.
05:24And I was disappointed with Jeanine Pirro, really disappointed with Jeanine Pirro.
05:29She folded like an umbrella, and people get away with things,
05:35and it's a disgrace.
05:36CNN reports Trump was blindsided by Pirro's decision
05:40and is now considering replacing her as Washington's top federal prosecutor.
05:45The judge has not yet ruled on the government's request
05:48to dismiss the case against Hearn.
05:50His attorneys say they are considering their next legal steps.
05:54Michigan Democrats vote today in a primary
05:57that could help decide more than who runs the U.S. Senate.
06:01It could determine which direction the party takes next.
06:05Progressive Abdul El-Sayed is trying to turn a string of left-wing primary wins
06:10into something bigger, a statewide victory in one of the country's most important battleground states.
06:16He's campaigned with Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez,

06:56with Democrats defending a must-hold Senate seat,
06:59and both wings of the party looking for a blueprint they can use this fall.
07:03That same divide is playing out in Detroit's 13th District,
07:07where progressive state Representative Donovan McKinney
07:09is trying to unseat Congressman Sri Tandadar,
07:12who has the backing of House Democratic leaders.
07:15Michigan is the main event,
07:17but voters also head to the polls today in Kansas, Missouri, and Washington State.
07:22Now to immigration enforcement.
07:25A federal judge has halted New York's new law,
07:28requiring federal agents to show their faces
07:30and wear visible identification during enforcement operations.
07:35Ruling stops the law from taking effect,
07:37while the legal challenge moves forward.
07:39It also follows a similar decision earlier this year,
07:43when a federal judge blocked California
07:45from enforcing nearly identical requirements.
07:47The laws were passed after the Trump administration
07:50expanded immigration enforcement,
07:53with supporters saying mass federal agents should be identifiable,
07:57and the administration arguing the requirements interfere
08:00with federal law enforcement.
