00:00The Mets drafted two players on the first day of the MLB draft.
00:03Mitch Voight and Antonio Jimenez both heard their names called.
00:07So let's break down these prospects with Mike Mayer,
00:10editor-in-chief at Mets Mirais and Mets Miners.
00:14Mike, thanks for hopping on with us.
00:16I read your newsletter this morning.
00:18You know all about these guys.
00:20So let's break it down for the amazons out there.
00:23They took Voight from Michigan with the 38th overall pick.
00:26He spent most of his time at Michigan playing second base this season,
00:31but he also has experience at other positions as well, as you know.
00:36The kid said he's a winner.
00:38I like the swagger.
00:39So what's your thoughts on the pick, and what do you like most about the kid?
00:44Yeah, I really like the pick.
00:45I mean, the Mets got a really good athlete,
00:47and that seems to be something they targeted last year
00:50and have this year with their two picks.
00:52I think one of the most exciting things is just to see
00:55how much his offense took off last year when he focused on only being a hitter.
01:02His K rate went down.
01:04His walk rate went up.
01:06He walked more than he struck out, showed off a ton of power,
01:09led the team in steals too.
01:11So he really improved once he was able to focus on just being a hitter,
01:16and that's something that it sounds like he's going to do with the Mets.
01:20He went viral back in March for acting like he was snorting coke during a celebration
01:27after a bases-clearing triple against USC.
01:31I'm not going to knock the kid for that.
01:33So you think that's just a kid being a kid, or do you think that's a red flag?
01:38No, I don't think it's a red flag at all.
01:40I think it's just a kid being a kid.
01:42He came out, apologized, did the right thing afterwards,
01:44and I think for the Mets to take him where they did,
01:47I don't think they're worried about it either.
01:50Yeah, we all laugh when we saw the article post on The Post this morning.
01:54But yeah, there's a lot of kids get drafted and have done worse out there.
01:59So let's go ahead and fast forward to the third round
02:01when they drafted Antonio Jimenez, shortstop from UCF.
02:06They got him with the 102nd pick.
02:09Mets director of amateur scouting, Drew Toussaint,
02:12said that the club believes that this kid has the chance to be an above-average defender
02:17and like what they saw from his bat this past season.
02:21So what sticks out to you when you're watching Jimenez play?
02:25I mean, for me, to be able to get that type of raw power
02:29and the combination of having a plus arm at shortstop with the 102nd pick,
02:34I think that's great value for the Mets.
02:37He's a guy that he could stick at short,
02:40and then even if he does have to move to third,
02:42they think he's going to develop the power that's needed for that position.
02:46So again, I think the Mets got another really good athlete that runs pretty well too.
02:52So I think they got a good overall player with some plus raw tools
02:55that could make him a starting shortstop in the big leagues.
02:59Real quick, 15 seconds, grade their day one.
03:03And why?
03:03I think it's going to be an A.
03:05I mean, obviously, they only had two picks,
03:08and it wasn't until 38th because of the rules.
03:12But that's a good – they targeted what they wanted in athletes,
03:17and that's what they got.
03:19Voight and Jimenez are both guys that are going to plug right into the system
03:22and immediately be performers
03:24and hopefully continue to go up the system that way.
03:27All right, Mike.
03:28Thanks for joining us, man.
03:30Absolutely.
03:30Thanks for having me.
03:33There we go.
03:35Thanks for having me.
