00:00Are the Mets turning things around? That is the question. Big win for the Mets on Wednesday night, 7-3 over the Braves at Citi Field.
00:08We're going to talk some Mets baseball right now with the Mets beat writer for the New York Post.
00:13My guy Mike Puma joins me now. Mike, how are you doing?
00:16Dexter, how are you today?
00:17I'm doing good. I'm doing good. Mets fans, they haven't been doing so good.
00:21Mets have been struggling lately. They've lost 10 out of the last 12 games. They are at the halfway mark.
00:25So I wanted to take a look with you about where this team is, but let's start with Game 81, which was last night.
00:32They hit the big win, 7-3 over the Braves. Juan Soto hits two home runs.
00:37How big of a win was this for the Mets? I know they've been in a funk right now,
00:41but do you think this is the kind of win that can turn things around for them going forward?
00:47You'd like to think so, but they broke. They were in Philly.
00:51They had the seven-game losing streak, and they had the breakout game where they hit the seven home runs,
00:56and you thought maybe that was a turning point, and then they ended up coming back and losing three more in a row.
01:05So we'll see here. You want to beat the Braves in the finale of this series, at least get a split after getting swept in Atlanta last week,
01:16and then you get maybe a little bit of a break in the schedule here.
01:21Now, listen, if you're not playing well, there's no easy game, but the Pirates certainly are not a good team.
01:28You go to Pittsburgh for three games, maybe you get something going here if you win the series finale against the Braves
01:35and take two straight wins into Pittsburgh.
01:39That would be nice. Mets fans will at least take a split in the series.
01:43I haven't seen series wins lately.
01:45Got to talk about Juan Soto. Two homers last night.
01:48He's been red hot in the month of June.
01:52Looks like he's finally coming around.
01:54Do you think we can finally put some of the noise to rest about Juan Soto,
01:58the concerns that some fans and other people had?
02:01Do you think he's finally starting to look comfortable in a Mets uniform?
02:04Yeah, and I think that's been behind him for a couple of weeks now,
02:07and even when the numbers weren't there for him, he was still hitting the ball hard.
02:15He was getting on base, but now it's really coming together for him.
02:22He looks comfortable, and listen, the Mets have needed it.
02:26Pete Alonso's cooled off.
02:29Lynn Doerr's been spotty.
02:31The bottom of the lineup has been pretty much a black hole,
02:36so they've won these two games here out of the last 12,
02:42and Soto played an instrumental part last night,
02:46and he also had a big game when they won in Philly last Saturday.
02:51So he's been kind of the ringleader right now in the lineup
02:55at the time the Mets have needed it.
02:56Yeah, he's been huge this month.
03:00And look, the Mets, last thing for me, Mike, they are 47-34, right?
03:05They're a half game out of first place, despite having lost a 10 out of 12 games.
03:09But when you look at this team with the trade deadline upcoming,
03:13and you mentioned the bottom of the lineup being a black hole,
03:16which has not been good all season long.
03:18When you look at this team, and David Stearns just talked to the media the other day,
03:22what do you think the biggest need is for this team right now
03:25that they need to address at the upcoming trade deadline?
03:28I think they need to address a little bit of everything at this point,
03:32especially the Sean Minaya news yesterday is very troubling
03:39about him having a loose body in his elbow and discomfort and being pushed back.
03:45You know, this was a guy they thought was going to be pitching for him next week,
03:49and now that's on hold.
03:51And I know they're only saying he's shut down from throwing for a few days
03:54or what have you, but that's alarming, you know,
03:59and that makes me think they may have to go out and find more starting pitching.
04:05And, you know, the lineup certainly has been so inconsistent
04:08that you think they're going to need another bat,
04:10and we've seen the bullpen shuffle going on.
04:13So I don't know if there's one you can just say,
04:16all right, this is the one area they have to address.
04:18I think they may have to address everything here.
04:21Yeah, a lot of needs.
04:22Got to show up the defense.
04:24Got to show up the start in pitching.
04:26Do also have to show up the bullpen.
04:28But the Mets at the halfway mark, 47-34.
04:31They will look to try to get a series split
04:33with the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field tonight.
04:35That is Mike Puma, great beat reporter,
04:38covering the Mets for us here at the New York Post.
04:40Mike, always a pleasure.
04:41Talk to you soon.
04:43Thank you, Dexter.
