00:00Thoughts on the Yankees, John?
00:02Yeah, I mean, Ryan Cashman has said they're going to be all in.
00:05I was hearing out in the All-Star game that it feels like they're going to be doing something big.
00:10Then again, another general manager told me Cashman has never given up anybody good.
00:15I think that's probably an exaggeration, but he was praised for Cashman saying that he's very careful
00:20and does not take chances that end up bad.
00:23So I don't think they're going to give us.
00:26Now, Spencer Jones is killing it in the minor leagues right now,
00:28and they certainly could get a lot for him.
00:31There are a number of teams that could use somebody like that, and I do believe he will be a star.
00:37George Lombard Jr., not having a big year, but he is their number one prospect.
00:42I think they're going to hold on to those guys.
00:43I think he's going to figure it out some other way, whether it be with Schlittler,
00:47and that's a lot even for them.
00:49I do think, because he's come up and he's done pretty well to start,
00:53I do think that they would be willing to give up somebody of that ilk.
00:57I don't know about him particularly, but I do think that they need to be in it.
01:01They've got a lot of issues right now.
01:03Third base is an issue.
01:05Bullpen also an issue for them, particularly a left-hander, and they need another starter.
01:08I think that's clear.
01:10I don't think you can just hope that Heal was going to be great,
01:14and that Yarbrough was going to come back, and he's going to be as good as he was.
01:17I do think Freed's blister will be okay, but it's another bit of a concern.
01:21So I think they're going to figure it out to do something,
01:25because they're not going to get out of this deadline without getting a third baseman, right?
01:30It's basically a black hole at this point.
01:32I wonder if they need a shortstop.
01:35Well, based on their comments, they love the guy, right?
01:38I think they're sticking with that.
01:40But can they turn around after telling us how much they love him and say,
01:43yeah, we don't love him so much?
01:44Well, the question is, can they get somebody who has some shortstop skills and play him less?
01:49You know, like I'm throwing out a name you've mentioned a few times.
01:53I wouldn't put IKF back on the Yankee roster,
01:55and I wouldn't put him at shortstop if he was back on the Yankee roster,
01:58but I at least would give that overview.
02:01You know, John, he can play third, too.
02:02I mean, they might do like an IKF or a Renjifo as at least a placeholder at third,
02:07because I don't think you can go many weeks with guys hitting 149 at third base.
02:10You've got to, even if it's a placeholder,
02:12until you land Suarez or McMahon or Key Brian Hayes, I wouldn't be opposed.
02:18You just mentioned, so, like, I think they should do what they can to try to get Suarez.
02:23He so obviously fits their needs, et cetera.
02:26My fallback position is for Brian Hayes,
02:28and it's not because me and you are old enough that we covered his dad
02:31and enjoyed covering his dad.
02:33That's a piece of work.
02:34I ran out to win spring training, and he gave me an earful.
02:37About the Pirates, right?
02:38Like, the Pirates don't love having him around.
02:40It was kind of off the record, so I don't want to say it.
02:42Well, I think the Pirate people don't – like, it's an issue there.
02:45It's like – so let me just do my favorite, Charlie Hayes line.
02:49I think you were probably there.
02:50He was – the Yankees were having a spade of injuries his first time through,
02:53and Charlie was stout, right?
02:57And he's sitting with his shirt off in his locker.
03:00And if you go back and look, Charlie Hayes played 150 games a year,
03:03and somebody said, Charlie, how do you stay so healthy?
03:05And he grabbed his sides, and he goes, fat don't sprain.
03:08Exactly.
03:08So that was his line.
03:09Anyway, I love that line for Charlie.
03:10So I like Brian Hayes.
03:12I see a Scott Brocious there.
03:14First of all, I know I locked down the defense, right?
03:17I locked down the defense.
03:18He's as good a defensive third baseman as you will find.
03:21So I know I have that for a team that sometimes gets weird with the ball.
03:27And I just think, like, Brocious in Oakland, where it was like,
03:29oh, he was following the Bash brothers.
03:31He's going to be a middle-of-the-lineup kind of guy we need.
03:34And he failed, and it kind of got in his head and whatever.
03:36He needed to get out of a place and go back ninth on a good team.
03:40I think if Hayes moved to someplace else, you'd get more because you'd say,
03:45hey, hit 240 and play the hell out of defense.
03:48You know what 240 would be for the Yankees at third base right now?
03:51That would be a joke.
03:5290 points more than they got now.
03:52Yes, right?
03:53So I have my eye on him.
03:55He's had back issues, but I've talked to some people who know him over there.
03:59I guess he really dedicated himself in the offseason to a program
04:01that's keeping him on the field more this year.
04:04He's a player I have.
04:06The one thing I'll add about the Yankees is two quick thoughts.
04:12I said this, Ryan Sampson's sitting in here, one of our great producers
04:16who I do the Yankee webcast with, and I'm like, you know, three years ago,
04:20like if I mentioned to a friend of mine, Spencer Jones,
04:22he's like, you can't trade Spencer Jones.
04:23I said, you had that same reaction about Volpe three years ago,
04:26like when they could have gotten Luis Castillo
04:28and might have won the World Series if they had, right?
04:30Like there's these players you haven't seen.
04:33It's hard to play in the major leagues,
04:35and I know you want to take George Lombard and Spencer Jones off the chessboard,
04:39but should you?
04:39You're the Yankees.
04:40Like at some point, these guys come up, and you're like, oh, all right,
04:43they're okay, but maybe they should have traded them.
04:45The other thing is the Yankees are very good at indexing big arms
04:49that light up the imagination of other analytically bent teams.
04:54So guys like Schlittler, but also others,
04:56and their catching has done great in the major leagues when they've traded it.
05:00So a guy I would keep my eye on is Rafael Flores,
05:02who's catching for them at AA, who whenever I call somebody,
05:05they say, keep an eye on Rafael Flores.
05:07Yeah, I mentioned Cashman's never given up any good.
05:10Norvayas has actually played very well.
05:11And Josh Smith would be playing third base for the Yankees.
05:14But generally, the guys that he gives up,
05:16it was worth trading and getting bigger pieces for.
05:19He's generally done a good job trading.
05:22I'm with you on keep Brian Hayes.
05:23I think there's something there.
05:24Change of scenery will help him.
05:26Batting ninth, something like that for the Yankees.
05:29And if he hits 240, it's 91 points higher than they've got now, right?
05:32So I'll take that.
