00:00The NFL's new technology to officially determine where to spot the ball on the field is great and everything for the game, but only if there's going to be full transparency.
00:10I think there's still too much confusion on exactly what it's being used for.
00:14So let me explain exactly what it is and how they plan to use it before I give my two cents.
00:20The brand new technology that we all saw debut at the Hall of Fame game between the Chargers and Lions is being tested because instead of relying only on chains or the chain gang, the NFL wants to use what's called Hawkeye technology to measure the distance between the spotted ball and the line to gain.
00:39And then six 8K cameras determine where the ball is on the field.
00:44But here's what's confusing, to me at least.
00:47This new system only affects the efficiency of spotting a first down, not the accuracy.
00:53The change doesn't address the issue of referees incorrectly spotting the ball, which is something that we've seen as a problem over and over again, season after season.
01:04To that, the league said the chain gang would still be at games as a second line of defense.
01:09But referee Sean Smith told reporters that wasn't the case for Thursday night's game.
01:14If we're going to use technology, then it should be something used to dumb down the game.
01:21And in this case, how it's being officiated.
01:24The refs should be the second line of defense to the technology, not the chain gang.
01:28The chain gang should be the third line of defense.
01:31All in all, I love the idea and I love the fact that tech is being used in sports or football in this case.
01:38But don't officially make this a thing or a part of the game until it's able to be explained to a five-year-old.
01:45The KISS method, as they say.
01:47Keep it simple, stupid.
