00:00Man, what the hell is going on with my Mets.com?
00:03Go ahead and log in.
00:04I'm not trying to sound like no baseball caring or anything,
00:06but I'm pissed this team is in a slump right now.
00:09So let's go ahead and talk some Mets baseball with Tyler Ward,
00:12and hopefully my guy Wardy can give us some sort of hope
00:15that this team can turn things around ASAP.
00:19Wardy, appreciate you hopping on, man.
00:21Got the text.
00:22Yo, can we be on in 20 minutes?
00:25Absolutely.
00:26The Nationals?
00:28The Nationals?
00:29I'm from Virginia.
00:30No one roots for the Nationals,
00:32and they lost a series to this squad.
00:35Last place Nationals at that.
00:37They're on the verge of losing a playoff spot.
00:39So, Wardy, what's going on with my team, bro?
00:42And should Mets fans be upset or concerned
00:45with this recent slump of bad baseball?
00:49They should absolutely be upset and concerned.
00:52I've been upset.
00:53The fact that you started the opening monologue today
00:55by saying how pissed off you are.
00:56Brandon, I thought I was coming in with a high heat,
00:58but clearly I wasn't the only one.
01:00But in all seriousness, no.
01:01The boys have been playing some really bad baseball.
01:03And if we say recent slump, it's not just a recent slump
01:06where the Mets went on a stretch of losing 14 of 16 games
01:09pretty much from the start of August post-traded line,
01:12but it's also the fact that this Mets team,
01:14going back the past two-plus months now,
01:16has one of the worst records in all Major League Baseball.
01:19The only other teams that are in that regard
01:20are some bottom feeders in the game,
01:22like the Colorado Rockies,
01:23and even to a degree, the New York Yankees, crazy enough.
01:26It has not been good baseball in New York whatsoever,
01:29but for the Mets in particular,
01:30they have been continuing to flounder key opportunities
01:33every single day.
01:34And if you followed up by saying, you know,
01:36should fans be concerned and frustrated,
01:37I'd be shocked if there are no fans
01:39or if there are any fan that isn't concerned
01:41or frustrated with this club right now.
01:44I guess the question now is,
01:45and I'll relay this back to you, Brandon,
01:47what do you think on a scale of 1 to 10
01:49that concern level should be?
01:51Because for me personally right now,
01:52I think we are easily at a 7.5, if not an 8.
01:57I was going to say 9.
01:59I was going to go like 9.
02:00We're talking about one of the top two payrolls in baseball.
02:03Talk about the expectations we had on this team
02:06coming into the season and the fact that the Yankees
02:09are kind of going through their little slump right now.
02:11This was the chance, and we talked about this multiple times,
02:15this was the chance for the Mets
02:17to finally not be looked at as little bro
02:20when we talk about the five boroughs of baseball
02:23around this city.
02:24So mine is on a 9, especially, Wardy,
02:27because all the trash that I've been talking to Yankees fans,
02:31now it's just like I got to shut up and eat crow.
02:34But at the same time, I'm somewhat level-headed at times,
02:39so let's talk about the main problems.
02:42What exactly are the main problems that this team is dealing with?
02:46And since we're, what, 35 games away
02:50before the regular season ends,
02:52do you see or have you seen any signs
02:56of them potentially getting back on track
02:58and going on a run?
02:59Oh, I've definitely seen little flashes.
03:03I mean, the Mets went ahead
03:04and won three consecutive ballgames
03:06until their past series,
03:07and they hadn't done that in at least three weeks.
03:10Last time the Mets won three consecutive games
03:12is what we saw there back in San Fran
03:14against the Giants.
03:15But when you look at what the actual problem is
03:17for this team, it's a multitude of things.
03:19But let's start with what we see at face value
03:21and what the greater issue is.
03:23And what we see at face value
03:24is the lack of pitching stability.
03:26The Mets have a record going back all the way to 1901.
03:30Currently 61 games, if not 62 and counting consecutively
03:33of them pretty much getting no length
03:35from their starters whatsoever,
03:37not named David Pearson.
03:38This continues to be the massive thorn in this Mets side.
03:41Every single time that they try to find consistency
03:44over the past couple months,
03:45their rotation has not been able to provide length
03:47beyond say four or five innings on average.
03:50Pair that with the Mets offense
03:51that until this past week
03:53has been a bottom feeder continued
03:54with runners in scoring position,
03:56it's playing them all season long as well.
03:59Even with having Juan Soto, Pete Alonso,
04:00Francisco Lenore, Brandon MOU, you name it,
04:03it has only moved the needle
04:04so much for them offensively.
04:05And the big problem, the greater issue there,
04:08because those were the baseline issues,
04:10let's talk about the greater issue.
04:11And the greater issue has to do with this team identity.
04:13The great question now is, where is it, Brandon?
04:16I have yet to find it.
04:17I've covered this team every single day,
04:18all season long,
04:19and they have no backbone whatsoever.
04:21The 2024 Mets built themselves off the fact
04:24that everyone doubted him
04:25after being 11 games below 500.
04:27And they said, let's go out and prove them wrong.
04:29And they did exactly that.
04:30They chipped away day by day.
04:32Now you see this Mets team,
04:33even with Juan Soto,
04:34there is no clutch gene.
04:36There is no that never say die mentality.
04:38There is that,
04:39oh, I'm going to roll over and die
04:41every single time that we blow a lead,
04:43every single time that we enter the eighth
04:44and ninth inning down a run or so.
04:46We know that's a lock to just stop watching the game
04:48because they're not going to come back.
04:49The Mets have not done that once this year,
04:51entering the ninth inning,
04:52when trailing the ball game.
04:53Very contrary from what they've built
04:54over the past couple of years
04:55and kind of having that never say die mentality.
04:58And until they build any kind of identity in that realm,
05:01I have no clue how they're going to get themselves figured out.
05:03Yeah, this team definitely has a better star power
05:07than what the 2024 Mets had.
05:09But the 2024 Mets had a grasp on reality.
05:13And I feel like they had more of a sense of urgency,
05:17you know what I mean?
05:17Absolutely.
05:18To go on those runs.
05:19And you mentioned Juan Soto,
05:21my favorite player in the world.
05:24He got quoted last night,
05:26I guess talking to our Mike Puma or the media,
05:29saying like,
05:29it's not too early,
05:32but it's not too late or whatever.
05:34Whatever word salad that is.
05:36All right,
05:36let's talk big picture here
05:38because they start a big series against Atlanta.
05:41We talk about them being little bro to the Yankees,
05:44but they've also been little bro to the Braves
05:46when it comes to talking about the division.
05:49So who do you think needs to step up most for this Mets team this series?
05:53I think it absolutely starts with their unsung captain and Francisco Lindor, right?
05:59The Mets ride through Lindor.
06:01So when they're going right,
06:02it absolutely has to with him right in the heart of things.
06:05Goes without saying,
06:06but Lindor,
06:06who also has been very sporadic in his production on the road this year,
06:10in which the Mets have a horrendous road record,
06:1210 games below 500.
06:14The only way to get that right
06:15is to have the guy who's been leading the charge
06:17through the past couple of years
06:18to go ahead and lead the charge yet again.
06:20But it doesn't just stop there with Lindor.
06:22Juan Soto falls in this category as well
06:24because Brandon,
06:25as much as Juan Soto statistically,
06:27he's having a very strong preseason with the Mets.
06:29If you look at the numbers with scoring position,
06:31if you look at the lack of home runs,
06:34rerun home runs,
06:35grand slams,
06:35they're not existent for Juan this year.
06:37He just has not put up the power implementation
06:39that we've been wanting from a guy like him
06:41with guys on base.
06:43That too needs to change.
06:44And that's why I hope to see in this series
06:45pair that with a pitching staff
06:47that has been their biggest liability.
06:49You need to know McClain,
06:50as crazy as this is to say,
06:52to go out and ball out yet again.
06:54Already just one start into his MLB career
06:56and every Mets fan is firmly under the belief
06:59that McClain just might be the best starting option
07:01the Mets have,
07:02not named David Pierce.
07:03So to say the least,
07:05those three guys absolutely need to show up big time
07:07in this series.
07:0815 seconds.
07:09Yes,
07:09no,
07:09and why do the Mets make it to the postseason?
07:13Yes,
07:13they do make it to the postseason
07:14because while they have been playing
07:16some really bad baseball the past two months,
07:18this is still their spot to lose.
07:20I look at that Cincinnati Reds team
07:22and other teams in the wildcard
07:23and I know that this Mets team is better
07:25even with all the flaws that they've had this season.
07:27What they do after making playoffs
07:29is a completely different discussion,
07:31but I'm still under the belief
07:32as we talk right now,
07:33August 22nd at the Mets.
07:35Do you make playoffs a month or so?
07:36Warty,
07:37can't wait to get you in studio next week,
07:38man.
07:39Appreciate you hopping on with us.
07:41Likewise,
07:41Brandon.
07:41Thank you so much.
