00:00all right we got our first breaking news coming out of the winter meetings edwin diaz mets closer
00:08heading to hollywood to the dodgers on a three-year 69 million dollar deal uh we've got our
00:15new york post mlb insider john hayman on with the deets on diaz uh john this is the breaking news a
00:22lot of people have been waiting for a lot of amazons are upset right now but a lot of people
00:27in la feeling amazing that they just landed diaz so can you give us all the deets you have
00:32on edwin diaz uh jumping ship and heading over to the west coast yeah you're right three years 69
00:39million that is a record deal on the average annual value average annual salary for a closer
00:45i went short term instead of the long term that's the way the dodgers do it i didn't feel like the
00:51mets really wanted to go long term either um you know i it's a blow for the mets i don't think you
00:57look at it any other way uh this guy was one of the best closers in the game if not the best closer
01:04in the game uh terrific fan favorite the timmy trumpet the whole thing terrific personality in
01:10that clubhouse obviously the mets have already signed uh devin williams so they did get a back
01:15end guy ahead of it but i mean he's not edwin diaz uh certainly uh obviously a spotty year last
01:21year in the bronx for devin williams uh edwin diaz was uh superb absolutely superb for the mets last
01:28year and overall as a met uh pitcher and certainly will be remembered fondly but you know the mets are
01:34going to have to act and do something uh now to beef up that bullpen and improve this team i mean
01:40you know they won 83 games they didn't make the playoffs they couldn't beat out the small market
01:45reds and they've got a ton of work to do right now how much of that devin williams deal of him
01:51coming to flushing how much of that do you think played a part into diaz uh leaving and going into
01:56la do you think that was kind of like the writing on the wall for him no i mean it's the mets make
02:03decisions on how to allocate money uh they obviously saw diaz as a pitcher below three or 69 million we
02:11don't have the details exactly what they offered but gotta figure it was below that at this point uh
02:17uh you know i i certainly they have the money uh it was just about the valuation that they felt and i
02:25don't devin williams wouldn't preclude edwin diaz they said they were still interested we believe they
02:30were still interested but they were interested at their price point and obviously it was not the
02:34winning price point and i think this is the mistake for the mets we saw that bullpen collapse time after
02:40time in the second half of the season last year okay you bring in devin williams but now what what's
02:45next for the bullpen and uh because david sterns has to be able to add uh some more arms in there
02:50well robert suarez is still out there and the blue jays and the mets appear to be at the forefront of
02:56those discussions i mean at this point i gotta think they better go hard for robert suarez uh he
03:02was an outstanding pitcher uh with the padres uh you know got a great fastball uh throws just as hard
03:10as diaz doesn't have the breaking pitch that diaz has uh does throw a lot of strikes uh so it's a
03:16strike throwing machine with a great fastball that to me is the guy you can say well now we've got
03:22uh williams and suarez you might not have to meet trumpet but you've got to two uh viable back end
03:28guys to me uh williams is a setup man only in in new york uh based on what happened last year uh so
03:35they do definitely need to get a closer there are other guys out there whether it be pete fairbanks
03:40kenley jansen uh kyle finnegan but to me suarez is the guy to go get for that bullpen right now
03:46some other breaking news that uh that broke for us cal schwarber goes back to the phillies
03:51he's heading back to the city of brotherly love five years 150 million dollar uh 150 million dollar
03:58deal they showed him love with that so there's the fact that schwarber going back to philly mean
04:04that david stearns and the mets have to lock up pete alonzo i i certainly would think so maybe they're
04:11so creative they got some other way to do it but to me they needed that slugger that extra slugger
04:16and certainly alonzo was the most logical guy he's been a an all-time met he's uh the met record holder
04:23for home runs he and soto a combination last year was maybe the best thing about a team that was
04:29obviously a very disappointing team overall but certainly he had an outstanding season another
04:34all-star season played 162 games again the fans love him there really is no reason not to go and
04:41get pete alonzo at this point obviously they have not uh come to a deal at this point i think he's
04:47got a lot of work to do it they're not close from my understanding at this moment but uh situation is
04:53always fluid uh they probably know that they need to get moving at this point because i'm not seeing
04:58another solution out there i mean someone might say kyle tucker well he's a right fielder uh they've
05:03got one soto and right field at 765 million dollars uh maybe cody bellinger but you know i think
05:09they need that slugger to combine with soto to really give them a great 3-4 combination uh so
05:16to me he's the guy to get maybe they'll think of something else maybe they're brilliant and creative
05:21i don't know but uh right now it feels like they need to go get pete alonzo all this breaking news to
05:26kick off the winter meetings never a dull day in the life of john hayman uh thanks for uh your time
05:31availability sir thank you brendan
05:34you
