00:00He's had a great season, and he's the forgotten man in the Juan Soto trade,
00:03and that is Trent Grisham.
00:05Guy's on pace for 30 home runs this year.
00:07He's been the leadoff guy for them mostly this season.
00:10Time and time again, whether it's a grand slam, it's a clutch home run,
00:15I don't know what it is, Joel.
00:16His approach looks better.
00:17He just looks like a completely different player in terms of the at-bats
00:21and plate appearances.
00:22From the field, you still get a little frustrated where he looks like he loafs
00:26in center field on some fly balls and balls that have high catch probability
00:30that he doesn't get to.
00:32But overall, for the player himself, he's been a very important piece
00:36for this Yankees team.
00:38I don't know, Joel.
00:39Do you have a comp for Trent Grisham?
00:41And the larger question is, what do the Yankees do with Trent Grisham
00:45because he is a free agent at the end of the year,
00:48and do they extend him the qualifying offer?
00:51Yeah, there's a lot there.
00:53So let's start with something that I think is important.
00:56The Yankees lost Juan Soto, and if they don't have a successful season this year,
01:02I don't think it's going to be about the loss of Juan Soto.
01:06Again, because I know what Yankee fans think, they're like,
01:12Cashman sucks at everything.
01:13Well, Cody Bellinger and Trent Grisham are on Cashman's ledger also, right?
01:20Like they were, Cashman got Grisham included in the trade,
01:25and there was a real tough decision, I think, for me in the offseason,
01:29whether they even tendered him a contract coming off a bad year,
01:31and they tendered him, and they got Bellinger.
01:33And those two guys together, and even independently,
01:37their numbers stand up.
01:38You know, it's like their numbers clearly stand up to Kyle Tucker,
01:41who would have cost them Luis Hill in a trade.
01:44So, like, all good for the Yankees there.
01:48Grisham is the kind of player, like, again, he's a Yankee in a lot of ways.
01:54He is really talented.
01:57He is really talented.
01:59There's a smoothness, obviously, to his game.
02:02He is not one of those guys who blinks under pressure.
02:05We saw that, right?
02:06He played great against the Mets as a padre in their playoff series a couple of years ago.
02:10He obviously has a bad moment in his history where he –
02:15Juan Soto's Nationals in 2019, one of the reasons they get through the Brewers
02:22is he – Grisham misplays a ball in right field.
02:25But, you know, that was not a really easy play.
02:30But, yeah, I think that the other part of it is all fascinating
02:36and is going to make all our offseason shows fascinating.
02:39Yeah.
02:40But, to me, it's like, if you know you're keeping Bellinger,
02:44you don't have to keep Grisham.
02:47If you don't know, do you have to keep Grisham?
02:49If you really believe in Spencer Jones, do you have to keep Grisham?
02:55So, I think that there's all of that.
02:59I think there's a media question.
03:03The qualifying offer will probably be about $22 million.
03:06I think if the Yankees put the qualifying offer –
03:10they can't put it on Bellinger, who's already had it, right?
03:13You can only have it once.
03:14I think if the Yankees put it on Bellinger – on Grisham.
03:18I think there's a fairly good chance he might take it.
03:21Because, like, let's play the game.
03:23Does he get three at 39, three at 42, three at 45?
03:30What's his number in the offseason?
03:32Two at 32?
03:34Like, off of this year, but, like, not a great body of work, not a great body.
03:41Like, you know, like, you've got to wonder how his body's going to age.
03:44Could you play the – this is that walk-year season that fools you?
03:51And he goes immediately back to being who he was the minute he signs a contract.
03:56I don't know.
03:58The sport is clamoring for guys who could hit.
04:00So, I think he's going to get a deal, and I think somebody will buckle and give him three.
04:05Let's say it's three at 45.
04:09Does he go for three at 45?
04:11And, again, remember, there'll be a little chilling of the market if the Yankees put the qualifying offer on him.
04:16Or is he better off doing one at 22?
04:19I think it's something he'd have to think about, worrying if he's even getting to three at 45 in this marketplace.
04:25But who knows?
04:26Maybe I'm wrong.
04:27Maybe he'll get three at 60.
04:28Maybe people will look at him and say, center fielder who hits home runs and draws walks.
04:32Shit, I'll give that a lot of money.
04:33I just – if I were guessing today, my guess would be three at 42.
04:38Like, that would probably be about the number for him.
04:41I've been right on some of these.
04:43I've been wildly wrong on some of these over the years.
04:46But you would think he has a market, though, right?
04:48He has a pretty good market, considering the guy almost hit – I mean, I understand maybe –
04:53I think he has a great market for one or two years when he'll absolutely want three, four, or five.
05:00Like, it's a little bit – like, if Pete Alonso puts himself out as a two-year player, he has a gigantic market.
05:06But if he puts himself out as a five-, six-, and seven-year player, he has a lot less a market.
05:12So, I think the question is, Grisham is – this is – he had the right year at the right time.
05:18He's 28 years old.
05:20Plays a position that is of great need.
05:23He's 28 years old.
05:25Body-wise, you think he's 28 years old?
05:28Like, would you bet on him to stay healthy?
05:31History would say he's not going to stay healthy.
05:33Right.
05:36And, you know, there are probably some guys, it seems, who will be like, I just can't have a player who moves like that in the field where –
05:44like, whatever the reality is, the body language is telling me something.
05:48–
05:58–
05:59–
