00:00California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a controversial bill that may create a state

00:04department to regulate youth sports. It would be aimed at improving access for kids regardless of

00:10gender identity. Newsom took a lot of flack from Democrats this past spring when he had Charlie

00:15Kirk on his podcast and said he thought it was, quote, deeply unfair for biological males to

00:20compete in female sports. Now, this new bill potentially regains some of that lost favor

00:26within his party, but as you might imagine, it's not sitting well with state Republicans.

00:30The state's minority leader, Brian Jones, said, quote, if they were up front and put forth a

00:35straightforward bill allowing biological males to compete against young women and girls, it would

00:39be easily defeated. Now, the bill and potential commission it creates focuses on a lot more than

00:44just gender and sports. It would assure fairness regardless of race, income, and disability, as

00:49well as examine standards of coaching, health, and safety. Now, Newsom did not issue a statement when

00:54he approved the bill.
