00:10Tuesday on two trans rights cases, and the court's decision will likely impact a total of 27 states
00:17that have similar laws banning trans athletes from girls sports. The nine justices heard the cases
00:22back to back over the span of more than three and a half hours. The conservative six justices on the
00:29court asked plenty of pointed questions to the attorneys arguing in favor of trans athletes.
00:35Here's Justice Samuel Alito. There are an awful lot of female athletes who are strongly opposed
00:43to participation by trans athletes in competitions with them. What what do you say about them? Are
00:53they are they bigots? Are they deluded in thinking that they are subjected to unfair competition?
00:59Court watchers were also keeping a close eye on conservative justice Neil Gorsuch. Five years
01:05ago, he shocked observers when he joined the liberal minority in a finding that allowed employees to
01:10sue for discrimination over sexual orientation and gender identity. He was very quiet during arguments
01:17back then. But that was not the case this time. Justice Gorsuch was very vocal and grilled both
01:23sides. Now, final decisions are expected by the end of June. The justices could address both cases in the
01:29same opinion or opt to take each one separately.
