03:13You know, magicians are often compared to grifters, card sheets, and even the French.

03:46You know, it's very strange being a magician.

03:49No matter where you go, the country, or the currency, as soon as you tell people you're a magician,

03:56when you ask for money, they just give it to you.

04:08Now, allow me to indulge you in a bit of a story.

04:121852, the height of the California Gold Rush.

04:15We're only two places to go for entertainment, the casino and the brothel.

04:18Jim, you would have loved it.

04:19On an otherwise unremarkable day, there appeared a woman with dark hair and dark eyes who walked

04:26unaccompanied down the center of downtown into the largest casino and began dealing a game

04:32of blackjack.

04:33Now, this was remarkable for two reasons.

04:35One, at the time, women were not allowed in casinos.

04:38And two, this woman only spoke French.

04:42This is the true story of a woman named Eleanor Dumont.

04:44A card sheet, a gambler, and some suspect, a magician.

04:49That night, she won herself a small fortune.

04:52And she did that night after night until she earned enough money to open her own casino.

04:56The 21, 20 years in French.

04:58It was an establishment, upscale, gorgeous, that specialized in poker, blackjack, and roulette.

05:06The best account we have of her is from a young man, a reporter, who came to her table

05:11to try to turn his modest fortune into a respectable one.

05:15After three rounds, she had cleared him completely out.

05:18But Eleanor had this magical way of convincing you that you'd won even when you'd lost.

05:24So, he joined her at the show.

05:28And he was granted a glass of French champagne and enough money to get home.

05:34Jim, you look like a gambling man all too happy to be separated from your money, am I right?

05:40Yes.

05:41Clearly.

05:43Then why do you say you and I play a sexy little game, yes?

05:46Okay.

05:46It's a very easy game.

05:47All you have to do is guess which bag contains the bottle.

05:51Do you think you can do that?

05:53Yes.

05:54I know.

05:54It seems deceptively easy.

05:56Probably easier than you thought.

05:57Except for, it shall not be.

06:00Because I'll be employing the exact same techniques, confusion, and misdirection that were used

06:05those many years ago by the great Eleanor Dumont.

11:17Houdini gave it away a little bit, but who's the most famous magician in the world?

11:21Damn it.

11:23Why was Houdini famous?

11:25Not for magic.

11:26For escape.

11:27He could escape from any jail cell you locked him in.

11:29That's what he really became known for.

11:31How did Houdini do it?

11:32Y'all tell you one thing.

11:33When they locked him in a jail cell, they told him to take all his clothes off, wrap

11:37them in a little ball, put them in a box.

11:39They put him in a jail cell naked.

11:41And guess what?

11:42Every time he still escaped and made it to his theater for his show.

11:46Why did they make him take his clothes off?

11:48Because they thought he was going to smuggle in tools.

11:51How did he escape from jail?

11:53He smuggled in tools.

11:56He smuggled in one tool.

11:58He smuggled in a piece of steel this big.

12:01And instead of putting this piece of steel on him,

12:04he put it in him.

12:12Not what you think.

12:17He'd swallow it.

12:18And when the time came and they threw him in the jail cell,

12:20they searched him.

12:21Obviously, he was clean.

12:23And all of you would have to do is just get it to come out just the way it went down.

12:28Amazing, isn't it?

12:29And yeah, so tonight I'm going to demonstrate a technique that you've never seen before.

12:32The technique of swallowing a piece of steel like Houdini did it 100 years ago.

12:37You guys want to see that?

12:40I'm going to do it exactly how he did it.

12:48I'm going to do it more hip today.

12:52Instead of one piece of steel,

12:54we're going to do it with a couple of dozen pieces of steel.

12:57There's a yellow, a green, and a red.

12:59These are sewing pins.

13:01These are very sharp.

13:03And tailors use them to basically just mark your clothing when they want to sew them up.

13:07It's very, very real.

13:09I'm just going to quickly just have you just take them out and verify.

13:12Anyone?

13:12Okay, take the red needle.

13:14And how you're going to verify for everybody that it's real is jam hair in the leg with it.
