00:41And in Argentina, the authorities have imposed an election ban on the eve of the legislative process.
00:50Hello and welcome to From the South. My name is Belen de los Santos.
00:53I'm from a tercer studio in Havana, Cuba.
00:55We'll begin with the news.
01:09We now begin with the information.
01:11The Regional Commanders of the Armed Forces of Venezuela reject the call for accoutre-tat
01:16and military intervention by the United States.
01:19The National Bolivarian Armed Forces condemned the recent statements made by the fugitive right-wing extremist
01:26Leopoldo López, who called for an invasion of the country.
01:30The Venezuelan military affirmed that promoting war and killing people
01:34is a despicable act that rejects one's own roots and people.
01:38The Strategic Defense Regents expressed the repudiation of the destabilizing right-wing
01:45that aspires to take power by force with the promotion of an intervention by foreign powers.
01:53And Venezuela's Minister of Defense, Vladimir Padrino López, urged Washington to present evidence
02:03showing the responsibility of the people murdered by the U.S. military in the Pacific.
02:09The United States of America wants to do it with bombs, with missiles, killing children,
02:18intimidating fishermen here in the Caribbean,
02:21extrajudicially murdering people in the Caribbean while they are working.
02:24Where is the evidence against these people who have been attacked?
02:32There are more than 30 people who have been announced by the spokespersons of the United States itself,
02:39who have died in the Caribbean Sea,
02:41and in the Pacific, as a result of missiles launched from drones, from boats,
02:49from ships deployed in the Caribbean Sea.
02:52That's nothing but warmongering.
02:53And in Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro thanked Colombia for its support
03:00in addressing U.S. imperialist aggressions against the country and the region.
03:04The president emphasized that while the U.S. military threat looms over the Caribbean,
03:09the country is well prepared to defend its territorial integrity, freedom and peace.
03:14President Maduro also highlighted the support that Venezuela has from all its brother countries,
03:20especially Colombia, which has neutralized the violent acts that have been attempted against Venezuela
03:26and insisted that imperialist and psychological warfare threats
03:31have been successfully countered with serenity and tranquility.
03:35On May 3rd, 2020, a group of mercenaries,
03:53Venezuelan mercenaries, and some U.S. mercenaries left from Colombia, supported by Duque,
04:00now the whole truth has come out because the organizer, John Woodrock, has confessed,
04:06everything they did, who financed it, who prepared it, who lead it, how did he order it, where did they train them,
04:14and he has said, everything about, even Duque, then president of Colombia,
04:21we also said it because we knew everything even Duque was doing, thanks to the fact that there are many patriots in the military forces,
04:29and in the intelligence forces of Colombia, and from here I thank you for all the support you have given us for many years,
04:36to all those who have supported the military and intelligence forces of Colombia,
04:41who have their hearts in Bolivar, and love us as the common homeland of Bolivar.
04:48U.S. President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of trade relations with Canada
05:02after accusing the country's authorities of manipulating a speech by former President Ronald Reagan.
05:07On his social media, Truth Social, Trump called a Canadian television advertisement false,
05:14claiming that it misquotes former President Reagan talking about tariff policies.
05:20The U.S. President accused the announcement issued by the province of Ontario of attempting to interfere
05:26with the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to raise tariffs on Canada.
05:30In this scenario, Trump announced that he would end all trade negotiations with Canada with immediate effect.
05:43And precisely in this regard, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his government's willingness
05:49to resume trade partnership with the U.S. to the benefit of workers in both countries.
05:54We can't control the trade policy of the United States.
05:57We recognize that that policy has fundamentally changed from the policy in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s.
06:07And it's a situation where the United States has tariffs against every one of their trading partners
06:13to different degrees.
06:15And it's in that context that our officials, my colleagues, have been working with their American colleagues
06:22on detailed, constructive negotiations, discussions on specific transactions, specific sectors,
06:32steel, aluminum, and energy.
06:35And a lot of progress has been made.
06:37And we stand ready to pick up on that progress and build on that progress
06:43when the Americans are ready to have those discussions
06:47because it will be for the benefit of workers in the United States,
06:52workers in Canada, and families in both of our countries.
06:56Moving on to other topics, tropical storm Melissa lives at least three dead and a dozen injured in Haiti
07:19during landslide in Fonta Mara, south of Port-au-Prince.
07:23Meteorological authorities issued an orange alert in the southeastern department of the country.
07:28The civil protection authorities warned of heavy rains
07:30and the risk of flooding in the coming hours in the several departments of the island region.
07:37They also reported that the St. Martin River overflowed,
07:40destroying the St. Suzanne Bridge in the west of the country,
07:43while several homes were affected in Port-au-Prince in the northeast.
07:49And the Mexican government reported that an oil spill in the state of Veracruz
08:01caused by heavy rains that hit the east of the country
08:04were there where at least 78 people dead
08:09and 23 people still missing was brought under control.
08:13The Secretary of the Navy issued a statement informing that this spill has been contained
08:19which occurred in a pipeline belonging to the state-owned company Petróleos Mexicanos Pemex.
08:25It specified that containment barriers were placed to prevent liquid from spreading
08:31into the Pantepec River with the support of local fishermen and the military.
08:36The agency reported that the pipeline is operating safely
08:39and that environmental cleanup work is continuing in the affected area.
08:45In Syria, authorities have reported several forced fires in the towns of Almutras and Basarsar
08:57in the municipality of Safita.
08:59The fire department reported that several firefighting teams were dispatched,
09:03including helicopters, to support the efforts to contain the flames.
09:08Civil defense stated that despite the progress made in some areas,
09:12the flames continue to be fueled by strong winds and dry vegetation,
09:16which is why they urged residents in the affected areas to evacuate
09:22and follow instructions to avoid injuries or fatalities.

09:42Welcome back to From the South. We continue with more information.
09:55In Argentina, the authorities have imposed an election ban on the eve of the legislative proceedings.
10:02The National Electoral Chamber has announced restrictions on campaign advertising events
10:08and support activities in order to guarantee the transparency of the electoral process
10:13and protect the will of the voters.
10:15The ban was put in place on Friday at 8 a.m. local time, as specified by the designated authority,
10:21and will remain in effect until the conclusion of the elections on Sunday, October 26th.
10:27Argentina will renew a total of 127 deputies and 24 national senators.
10:34Meanwhile, also in Argentina, the Fuerza Patria coalition denounced the negative impact
10:49of President Javier Mille's policies on the stability of the population during the closing of its electoral campaign.
10:56Governor of Buenos Aires, Axel Kisseloff, appeared in a photo of Unity to support his supporting the leading candidate, Jorge Tayana.
11:07The main objective is to replicate the result in the integration of future provincial legislative chambers,
11:14where with 19 votes of their own, they will be able to represent the province in the National Congress.
11:20This occurred in the context of the provincial legislative elections, to be held next Sunday, October 26th.
11:35The Electoral Service of Chile begins preparations for the November 16th presidential and parliamentary elections.
11:4215,070,000 voters are called to the polls as part of these preparations for the election process.
11:51The Cervelli Institute will publish on its website the list of the 203,646 poll workers this weekend.
12:01This method of publishing the names of the designated poll workers differs from the used in previous elections,
12:08where they were notified by registered letter or in the print media.
12:13Cervelli reported that a total of 3,498 polling stations will be open, of which 3,379 will be in the country and 119 abroad.
12:27On November 16th, Chileans will not only elect their next president,
12:32but also the 155 members of the Chamber of Deputies and 23 of the 50 senators.
12:47Meanwhile, also in Chile, high school students protested against interventionism promoted by far-right politicians
12:54regarding freedom of expression in the educational community,
12:58in addition to attempting to censor national historical facts for their own convenience.
13:04Students marched to the Superintendency of Education to reject and express their concern about the censorship
13:11that these right-wing sectors are trying to impose on educational content.
13:16They demanded an end to political repression against students and teachers.
13:21Through legal proceedings and summaries against them, suspension and loss of classes,
13:25the students denounced the action of a councillor who attempted to censor historical education
13:31about the juretat in Chile against President Salvador Allende,
13:36describing it as alleged indoctrination.
13:39A statement by a Republican councilwoman from the municipal council in which she claimed
13:49that our school and our principal were receiving threats from teachers
13:53and that there were ultra-left indoctrination
13:55and our school had been targeted for an activity to commemorate in the coup d'etat,
14:00a fact that was de coup d'etat and that led to a dictatorship in our country,
14:07and that is a reality, so it is not possible that the people who are supposed to be educating us,
14:12teaching us and training us are also denying things that actually happened in our country.
14:18And after overcoming a legal challenge from the far right,
14:23Brazil's first medical school course for agrarian reform settlement residents is underway.
14:29Our correspondent, Brian Mir, has more.
14:31In 1997, Brazil's social movements pressured the federal government
14:35to create university courses for youth in agrarian reform settlements and quilombolas,
14:41which are villages of descendants of people who escaped slavery.
14:44Since then, 190,000 people have gotten bachelor's degrees through the Pronera program.
14:51Now it's starting its first medical school course at Pernambuco Federal University.
14:56We believe that Brazil's public universities,
14:59especially the Federal University of Pernambuco,
15:03need to address the structural problems in our society.
15:08When we look at rural areas,
15:10we understand that there are populations which still face barriers
15:14in accessing both university education and quality health care.
15:19After 21 years, Pronera was cancelled by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro,
15:24but it was reinstated when Lula da Silva took office in 2023.
15:29When the government announced the new medical school program, however,
15:32a legal challenge was mounted to attempt to stop it from happening.
15:36It's important to say that we never had any legal problems
15:41with our courses in areas like education and geography.
15:44But now this medical course bothers Brazil's elites.
15:48Pedagogy, geografia,
15:50agora, quando assunto a medicina,
15:52aí incomodou a elite brasileira.
15:56This is why legal challenges are on the way,
16:00mainly from the right and the far right,
16:02who are attempting to cancel the medical school program.
16:06The first legal hurdle was overcome this month
16:08when a federal regional court ruled in favor of Pronera.
16:12The plaintiffs still have a right to appeal to the Supreme Court,
16:15but the judges ordered that the program be allowed to start immediately.
16:20The law in medical schools have always been occupied
16:23by the children of the rich in Brazil.
16:26This is why this bothers them.
16:27They don't want their children to study in the same spaces
16:32as the children of poor people.
16:35Brazil's first medical program for agrarian reform settlement
16:38and quilombola residents is scheduled to start by the end of the month.

19:06of alleged violation of its airspace by Russian fire jets.
19:10The Russian Ministry of Defense stated that on October 23rd,
19:16Su-30 fighter jets conducted scheduled training flights
19:21over the Kalingrad region in accordance with the rules
19:25for the use of airspace over the territory.
19:28The ministry specified that the aircraft did not deviate
19:31from their flight path or violate the borders of other states.
19:37In this scenario, the Russian government reported
